I cut those out all the time and solder in a new scroll compressor all the time. I ain't got any of those expensive fancy digital tools and equipment, but I have more work than I can possibly do in my short life because of "word of mouth" advertising. Thanks for the vids, the info, and the entertainment. God bless bro.
Trane has allot of issues with rotor[ ] locks here in Texas also. We would spray with galvanized gray. It did not help to repair leaky R/LK . I have used reducer coupling and cut them out of line weld direct with safety silver 45..
They are excellent gauges. I own them and love superheat and subcool measurements in real time. Don't recover with them. If you vac down a burnt out system, it won't be good for the internals of the 550s. Use an old set of analogs for that kind of work. And like other said. Analogs are always good for a backup.
I think that evaporator look good. Might be cheaper to get a new compressor which will come with poe oil. Then use r-407c instead of 22. I just bought 407c jug for $168. I have 407c in my house and no issues, and it's a 1990 payne tear drop unit with a bristol compressor. I did it as an experiment, added 20% poe oil on top of the mineral oil. Just curious how long it will hold together.
The exhaust from a 90 plus furnace should never be that close to your condensor .... One could make the case the problem is from 13 yrs of condensate / acid from the furnace flue pipe blowing on the ac ....
Also steve, they make a brownish-red corrosion inhibitor paint that can be applied on units. Get yourself a paint gun & offer to dis-assemble those heat pumps & condensing units to paint each part, then re-assemble them & install them. This extra service is laborsome, but it may make you so pretty good money on your installs.
I remember you had the exact same issue last year with one of your customers. The rotolocks were rotten on a compressor located near the ocean. Must be a common failure point on Trane units. If they had manufactured it better, it would have lasted longer. Good troubleshooting Steve!
Hey Steve my Ac is a 2-1 unit an when u flip the Ac on still blows heat out. I change the relays an check to see if it's gettin the correct volts an it's all ok an has gas in it I am stuck.
Nice catch on the leak, Steven. The salty water really claims the condensers and piping before their time. No fix & go on this one. Time for an upgrade.
Showtime The model # for condensing unit is 2A7A1060A1000AA. The 60 in that model # designates 60000 BTU's; at 12000 BTU's per ton that makes it a 5 ton unit.
Have you made a follow up to this and to find out what the out come was? Thank you for the great up loads. My daughter loves your dog. Keeps the up loads coming plz. 👍👍👍👍👍
Steven, and everyone else Trane has a galvanized paint for the roto locks that needs to be applied every 5 years that will stop that rusting. People need to know about it because the parts house won't tell you about it and yes it is expensive but so is everything else that Trane sales.
I wonder if cold galvanizing spray applied to the rotolocks would accomplish the same thing? Knowing Trane, they probably repackage a formula like cold galvanizing spray and charge twice as much for it!
That sounds like them all right. A good rattlecan of cold gal and some primer behind it will assure the owner the compressor will hold until the outside coils corrode out.
Steve, i deal with this daily.... I call them the "BIG ORANGE PUMPKINS"... Ain't worth a frig!!!! Every 9 out of 10 compressors i change are those BOP types.. I have only had to change (1) Goodman! It was 20+ years old though and a scroll went right back in it! I got a pic in my pile of a compressor that was 5 year old, BOP, Went bad.. I did 4 compressors in one week 3 weeks ago!!!! They just suck and the orange scrolls they went to ain't much better!!!
She's a leaker momma she's a leaker ! The trane has been stopped lol couldn't you replace the compressor/ rotor locks with one with POE oil in it and retrofit it to 407c I wouldn't be happy if I had to replace the whole system either cause that's a lot of money !
Great job and video like always ( Steven )

how do you like the smart tool?
And they say you can’t stop a trane bs
How about just trying to tighten the nut first before up selling the guy
U 1st
What are those gauges you use?
"The old mighty Trane jumped off the track, y'all!"
Trane has allot of issues with rotor[ ] locks here in Texas also. We would spray with galvanized gray. It did not help to repair leaky R/LK . I have used reducer coupling and cut them out of line weld direct with safety silver 45..
I am starting out in the havc field. I have my havc and plumbing liscense, my question is do you recommend the testo 550 gauges starting out?
Hvac ,got to hate spell check on iPhone
They are good guages. Its always good to have a set of analogs though. Never know when you are going to have problems.
+fastzombie1 thanks
no problem

did you replace the h10 with the fieldpiece?
All your videos are very informative. Keep it up. Learned more from you then some of my HVAC teachers. What's the iPad app tool you use?

What part of the country is that?
The ol' American Standard is about to set sail from the dock in southern Massachusetts!
The exhaust from a 90 plus furnace should never be that close to your condensor .... One could make the case the problem is from 13 yrs of condensate / acid from the furnace flue pipe blowing on the ac ....
A person with a IQ above 80 could see the ocean in the video. That was the cause of the failure.

was it the reversing valve?
rusto-locks ... poor old climaturd compressor ... nice work steve
Awesome work Steve. Thanks for posting.
. How much did you charge this guy to change it out?
Great Job Steve! Time for a new unit! Always enjoyable!
Why cant you just solider it
You can't solder rusted out threaded fittings, Einstein.
3/4" suction line will only drop capacity by 2-5%, depending on the length. But she's a leaker, momma.
Looks like it's time for an upgrade.

Even the fan motor was horribly rusted out.
How can you tell the tonage all I see is numbers, I guess that's why I am not a HVAC guy

Thanks I never knew that
Thanks Joseph, I always wanted to know how to find the tonnage. How do you find what the year of the unit is? In the same serial number?
I actually don't mind paying for repairs that are slam dunk obvious like that gas leak
Ol American Standard, don't much care for them to much like trane, expensive parts. Thanks for the video.
You can tell a Trane came thru, she left he tracks lol. Good video Steve
Have you made a follow up to this and to find out what the out come was? Thank you for the great up loads. My daughter loves your dog. Keeps the up loads coming plz. 👍👍👍👍👍
Good video Steve, I have a whole development full of American standard don't much care for them.
If it was my house i would rig up an automatic fresh water bath for that compressor, maybe 3 or 4 times every 24. May not help though.
great work!
Great job Steve
Steve's using the probe again, mama.

+Fireship1 you are probably right
That sounds like them all right. A good rattlecan of cold gal and some primer behind it will assure the owner the compressor will hold until the outside coils corrode out.
You say American standard? But looks like it has a orange trane/compressor in the condenser!??
Steve, i deal with this daily.... I call them the "BIG ORANGE PUMPKINS"... Ain't worth a frig!!!! Every 9 out of 10 compressors i change are those BOP types.. I have only had to change (1) Goodman! Yet parts are expensive for trane so I think it'd be better off in the scrap pile rather than being fixed and replaced with a 410A
Steve, have you considered selling suction line corrosion grenades for your customers on the coast?
It might be a money maker for you.
You can stick a fork in that one. Hope he upgrades. Take care, Brett
If you ain't cheating you ain't tryin
I'm guessing the guy said next year
Dean mclamb, the testos are great. BUT! Be sure you know the old school way 100% before you go high tech. Old school won't let you down.
you can't stop a Trane, but apparently you can stop an American Standard!🤣🤣🤣🤣
HeroCaleb.com
