Ok, I'm 18, but Donald O'Connor, Danny Kaye, and Bing Crosby are my favorite movie star/singers/dancers EVER! Forget Justin Bieber, Johnny Depp, Natalie Portman, and Lady Gaga--the old movie stars were the best!
I know that I must sound like an "old Fogey" ( well is AM 88 years of age) but there is no argument, these musicals were simply fantastic. We all knew the story, and that all would come right in the end, but they showed such fantastic talent, they could all act, dance, sing and were competant doing lots of other incidentals, which the so called "Stars" of today cannot begin to emulate. now it seems like we really do not need stars, as everything is computer generated. I thank God that I got to see some of these fantastic performers.
Well, Bing is at a disadvantage, cause everyone else is known as a dancer, and he is best known for singing, so while everyone else is dancing, he just stands there!
Very rare to look as beautiful as Mitzi Gaynor and have real talent, she want on to have a fabulous career on stage and tv, one of the greatest entertainers ever Triple Threat.
I totally agree with you, and if she had been given the roles and publicity of some of the other stars of that era, she would have appeared in so many more films as she was so versatile, not to mention her outstanding beauty.
Indeed I had wonderful time while watching these four exceptionally-talented movie legends doing delightedly and high-spiritedly their musical number of Mr Cole Porter's You're The Top.Their production number was well-executed,well-choreographed,and well-performed. In today's standard this film is simple and old-fashioned.But in my viewpoint it can still be described as classy, fabulous, momentous, and timeless in terms of its fine production values, its rousing highlights, and its brilliant stars.
It just doesn't get any better than this!! I love how Mitzi Gaynor so gracefully and cleverly seats herself at Bing's request. Insightful comments below, too!
I think that you got it a teeny weeny bit wrong there, what you should have said is that the Gil Elvgren pin up girls looked like Mitzi, `cos in my humble opinion she is simply the best ever.
Those two were the most versatile dancers I've ever seen...able to do multiple things (popping caps, bouncing balls, etc.) while performing a dance routine. I would also rank the Nicholas Brothers very high. Watch them in "Down Argentine Way" and also in "Stormy Weather", where they performed what even Fred Astaire called the greatest dance scene ever filmed!! In that scene, they tap dance on table tops, on a Baby Grand Piano, and do splits down a gigantic staircase!! A must watch for anyone who loved the Golden Age of Hollywood!! My rankings of the greatest ever are as follows: 1. Fred Astaire 2. Donald O'Connor 3. Nicholas Brothers 4. Ginger Rodgers 5.Gene Kelly 6. Gregory Hines 7. Baryshnikov 8. Gene Nelson (Tea for Two and Oklahoma)
You can see who worked so well together. Don and Zizi just clicked while you can see the Bing had to just follow some basic dance instruction to keep things going.
Yes there are 4 talentet dancers but sorry guys the two Ladys are dancing with 10 cm Highheels thats amazing. By the way i love this pice of amarican Musical Please forgive my spelling
I love the split screen! This is my first encounter w/ the blog.. will be back for more. Thanks for the many hours of compilation, distillation, now fascination...
They're interesting, but not out of the ordinary, the most recent version of Anything Goes from the 2011 revival has lyrics so far altered, there's very little of the original lyrics left in

It's a great song and Crosby and O'Connor are very good singers but the song just seems kind of flat when a character other than Reno Sweeney is the main singer. I guess I've been spoiled by the recent revival.
Because you're looking at this with a modern eye. She is really wearing a leotard with dance tights, and over those, the shirt that comes to the waist. You think she's dancing in just her tights, but you're just not seeing the leotard.
This film wasn't Anything Goes. It was a quick paycheck for some entertainers who decided to do songs from the real musical. I tied to watch it on TV years ago and wondered why it even went by the same title. It was crap.
Crosby was usually at his best with musical partners that could challenge him and keep him on his toes like Merman, Mary Martin, Sinatra, Louie Armstrong, and even Hope...There is no tension just TEDIUM...,
no because you're absolutely right. i can't stand it. mitzi looks goofy with an elderly crosby by her side, and donald and zizi are just bland in this. this was made for the 30s, not the 50s. why do they gotta ruin it

Donald O’Connor moves so smoothly. He looks like it’s natural for him

He’s still a great singer though
He does a little kinda dancing
Anything with Mitzi in it is fine by me 🥰🥰

Mitzi Gaynor looks like a Gil Elvgren pin up girl. Almost too perfect.

Bravo! Cole Porter being sang by a great cast including incomparable Crosby and O’Connell! 🙏
A very subtle touch to Crosby's rendition occurs at 1:45, when he sings the "April shower" line with a Jolson-like nuance.
ah, I used to be like that, up and down no problem!
I nearly choked when she did that growl XD
So glad to hear all the lyrics to this enchanting song performed on film. Thanks, Rebecca!

Beautiful women. And what voice of Bing! Donald: the representation of simpathy.
I just saw an interview where Mitzi said Donald was a better dancer than Gene Kelly, but Gene was a better partner.
You can see who worked so well together. Don and Zizi just clicked while you can see the Bing had to just follow some basic dance instruction to keep things going.

Very pleasant to watch poised people. :)
Why thank you, i share the credit with Donald as he has ended up dominating my channel
lovely!
RIP Zizi 17 Jul 2020
Haha that is true!!! :D
1:39 did Donald almost fall? His face is so cute! XD
2:58 - Nice (and funny) to hear after going with Orb yesterday in the Derby (he won).
In a very mediocre film, this was one of the highlights! Excellent all round,
I wonder why Mitzi didn't have a career in ballet. She's obviously ballet trained and such a beautiful dancer.
She Vogued!
These guys are really pervy in this video.
@faith4094 Of course! Anyone who doesn't has something wrong with them!
1:39
I think it's done much better in the movie night and day with carry grant. It's a quick tempo song.
I notice Donald at 1:39 trying to grab Zizi's zaza. ...
(O'Connell, that is.)
O’Connor that is
If you are so determined to find fault with this superb dancing, at the very least get the bloody name right.
Note the altered lyrics...

Johann Strauss didn't write any symphonies.
There was more than one composer named Strauss. The one who wrote symphonies was Richard Strauss

Why is the girl with the blue top on not wearing any pants or a skirt?
She is just weraing tights.

Pretty hard to take. Too slow, and no pizzazz at all.
Your name matches your understanding of musical numbers like this.
Cole Porter was gay and in gay lingo "top" and "bottom" have a different meaning. I won't say how. This is a family website.
George Strum this was the thirties when he wrote it

What a dark, dirty mind you have. Writing this was just a bit of fun. What anyone does behind closed doors is none of our business.
Gay meant a different thing in the 30s too.
