She was and still is beautiful. If she were just a regular dancer in the troupe they would put her in front anyway. She's just a great dancer. Probably why she is still with us, thankfully.
We in South America spent many an evening at the movies watching these marvelous musicals... I am 78 now and I do remember those American productions....
I loved her when I was a small kid and did an impersonation of her singing "a person in pants"! In English English this means underpants, in American English trousers. Unfortunately in this travesty what were clever words are upstaged by the rubbishy arrangement and the over busy dance. The best recording is conducted by John McGlinn with reconstructions of the original band-parts & explanations of the topical references., I played the Purser at the Guildford School of Acting in an excellent number sung by girls called "Where are the Men?" A girl took me in a tango hold, dropped me and all of them walked over me. It brought the house down. I'll look for more of Mitzi on RUclips. She was in a good film with Yul Brynner.
Well never see this kind of talent again unless hollyweird is gutted Nd cleaned up. So sad to me, the entire family could watch this and enjoy it eating popcorn and sing along…..Thank you for this wonderful clip!!
I saw Mitzi Gaynor's stage show in person back in the late 1970s, and man was she HOT!!! There was not a sexier woman on t.v. and movies back then than Mitzi Gaynor! I loved Joey Heatherton too, but even she had to take a back seat to Mitzi in her prime. As late actor Ray Walston once said: "Mitzi brings out an animal magnetism in him like no other woman can."
I’m so glad that I got to see her introduce South Pacific at the 2013 TCM Festival. Her co-star, Francine Nyugen, was also there. They both expressed sorrow over the recent passing of their co-star, John Kerr, whom they admired deeply. And Mitzi appeared with The Beatles in their second appearance on The Es Sullivan Show. RIP, Mitzi.
Got to meet her twice in person during the revival tour in the 90's through my ex who was in the show. Stunning performer and very kind! Actually remembered my name after only meeting me one over a month before. And man! She wore Bob Mackie well!
I think Miss Gaynor a wonderful dancer and the spirit and joy of this number is a pleasure to see. Also great orchestation..very 50,s style!!. it,s a great example of those great musical numbers, great songs, dresses...etc. I love this number and Miss Gaynor sings really nice, she seems very happy here. GREAT. Carlos
Mitzi is great in this number. She said she was never good in movies except Les Girls and South Pacific , but she is fantastic here. I wonder why she didn't see it that way.
i can't believe someone on here is stating that marilyn monroe and jane russell were dancers, yeah of course they were?? they wiggled pouted and posed, Mitzi was a trained dancer of the highest degree, like cyd charisse, vera ellen, ann miller, gwen verdon and a few others
This was a remake of the 30s film which had also starred Bing Crosby. When Paramount redid this though it was a different story, and the lyrics had been adjusted for the song due to censorship reasons.
This is my absolute favorite performance of all time! She just has a fantastic vibe! Love everything about her and her talent! Not like the hacks if today!
I really cannot understand why Mitzi Gaynor was not the biggest star in Hollywood, she had everything, she could sing, dance (equal tp ANY of the stars of that era) she could act, and on top of all that she was absolutely stunningly beautiful, she has been my all time favourite for seventy years, and I still , at the age of 86, watch her films on the web. She is my absolute favourite of all the stars.....and there were PLENTY of stars way back then. They will never be able to better those stars with the current obsession with CGI
@@warnegoodman Sorry Warne, but I have to disagree with your assessment on the singing of Mitzi Gaynor. I worked for the largest privately owned clothing company in the USA. I was NY based, but when she was appearing at the top spot in Vegas I rang to book a table for her show......The waiting list was SIX months, only Sinatra had a longer waiting list at that time. So to say that her singing was weak means either you have never seen (or heard) her live shows, or you are tone deaf.
This is lovely! It's a pity that people have to find something negative in everything, instead of just enjoying the good! This video deserves only positive comments.Being that analytical will ruin anything! Thanks for uploading! :)
RUclips critics! Aaaaagggghhhhh! Name a star today that has the combination of looks, dance, acting and singing ON STAGE that Mitzi Gaynor had and has!
I always liked this song and think it shows off Mitzi Gaynor's many talents. I know the lyrics have been modified over the years but wonder why they changed the lyric "authors use four letter words" to use three words." Four letter words "has much more impact and reflects what this song is all about.
I wonder what value people who post these “comparison “ comments” have …. I just enjoy the fact we have the ability to watch such great talents with individual brilliance .
Listening to this I thought I had misremembered what a great singer she was and then I realised the sound track is full of wow. Nevertheless you can see what great dancer she was; especially at 1:32 where she kicks higher than any of the other girls in the troup.
Try to get a high def copy of her film with George Gobel and David Niven, The Birds And The Bees. Only a 350 rez copy is on youtube, and Mitzi is really bringing it. A fun film.
Mitzi Gaynor came into the limelight in the early 50's. In films, she was first spotted in the Betty Grable-Dan Dailey starrer "My Blue Heaven". I vaguely recall that she played Betty's understudy and flirted outrageously with Dan, which causes a crack in their marriage. Yes, Mitzi was cute with her pug nose and petite form. But, she was first and foremost a fantastic dancer with lovely legs and calves that showcased her terpsichorean prowess. 20th Century Fox, under which studio she was a contract player went into publicity overdrive by planting all Mitzi's high-kicking poses in movie magazines. This helped as even those who didn't have the time to go to the movies still got to know who Mitzi Gaynor was. She was wise in that she obeyed studio protocol and played even in a Western: 3 for Texas. But, the studio realized that dancing was her forte and gave her a string of starring roles in musicals. She displayed her dramatic flair in "The Joker is wild" with Frank Sinatra and won the audience's sympathy for her loyalty to a bum, who gave her nothing but heartache. A high spot in her career was the stage hit "South Pacific"; another great outing was 'Les Girls" with Gene Kelly where she captivated audiences with her exquisite dancing. Yes, Mitzi Gaynor, was greatly loved by audiences back in the 50's and 60's and its great to know she is still going strong.
The fact that they cleaned up the lyrics amuses me considerably. "We've often rewound the clock/since the puritans got a shock/when they landed on Plymouth Rock..."
I totally agree with people who compliment Mitzi on her dancing prowess. You still have to wonder how far she would have gone if she had the dancing skills, but lacked those sexy legs.
@pambazo55 This song was written by Cole Porter for the musical titled the same way in 1934 - you may want to take a look and search about this guy - he wrote a lot of aswesome songs that's been sung by the greatest performers. I've got you under my skin, ring a bell?
She can Dress like that, Dance like that and Look like that and the censors changed the line from "use only 4 letter words" to "3 letter words" (at 0:15) Ha! Because 4 letter words were only dirty!?! What fun!
Ohhh I see =) Thanks. And yes it is strange but things happen that way. If you consider the mid 18th century in France or England raunchy shows and literature were a lot more accepted than at the end of the century and in the victorian period.
You're right, it was "4 letter words". I can only assume that "standards and practices" in Hollywood found that "4 letter words" was too much for the ladies in Ohio to hear at the matinee in 1956. Fight censorship! LOL
They changed the original thirties lyrics ("four-letter words"), which implied cusswords and was too suggestive for the repressive fifties. The "three-letter words" reference was an attempt I think, to change the meaning from "cuss words" to simplistic, or stupid words. It's weird that the earlier twenties and thirties were in so many ways more progressive than the later decade of the fifties.
Not weird. Everyone used to know that conservatism and liberalism swung each way like a pendulum. It wasn't one long march from one to the other into infinity.
What if Mitzi had met Bob Fosse? I think Mitzi would have done just fine with his choreography. She's got the precision, wit, humor, grace and ballet discipline needed for Fosse.
Someone commented she missed or messed up the lyrics. She didn't miss a thing; they changed all the lyrics b/c of Hayes Code! Her voice however...if ever there was a case for dubbing. (Professional singer and vocal coach here.)
Mitzi Gaynor was good but for a really stunning performance of this number please check out the rehearsal performance of Sutton Foster for the recent Broadway revival of Anything Goes. It's here on RUclips.
Without a doubt one of most talented stars of her generation. Very underappreciated.
She was and still is beautiful. If she were just a regular dancer in the troupe they would put her in front anyway. She's just a great dancer. Probably why she is still with us, thankfully.
Mitzi Gaynor is simply timeless - with an awesome talent in so many area.
Excellent version of the Cole Porter classic By the beautiful and talented Mitzi Gaynor. I remember her TV specials in the 60s very fondly.
Mitzi is 90 now. Hard to believe! She did fantastic musical numbers.
Mitzi is sosososososos beautiful! She's a goddess!! She looks amazing, there just aren't performers with class like her nowadays!!
Can't sing.........
We in South America spent many an evening at the movies watching these marvelous musicals... I am 78 now and I do remember those American productions....
Mitzi Gaynor was the most beautiful woman to ever grace the silver screen. And she could dance like crazy, sing and act too.
MItzi's singing voice isn't much to write home about.
@@jackanthony976
But at least she did her own singing.
Stogie Chomper that really isn't true. Not sure why you would say that. She is just a very good dancer.
Hardly. Vivien Leigh, Grace Kelly
Sad to hear the Mitzi is no longer with us. She was such a joy in everything that she did. RIP dear Lady.....

This is probably the best number from this movie- it's funny how they censored the lyrics- but no one can censor the sensational Miss Gaynor's dancing
Funny I didn’t recognize these lyrics and can’t find them anywhere only the more common rendition
Lovely and talented Mitzi...
maybe the lyrics were toned down, but pretty rad to have guys dancing together in the 50's, even for a few seconds. I LOVE Mitzi!!
loved her in South Pacific
Mitzi Gaynor is a FANTASTIC dancer. She's so inspirational :)

I think the only real sex symbol who could dance was rita.
Sorry but nobody is on the same level as Vera Ellen.
Agreed Liza. She was beautiful with legs up to the sky, and she floated like air.

Try this version: In Rehearsal: Sutton Foster Sings "Anything Goes"
The actual release date of this motion picture was April 1956. It was Bing Crosby's last picture for Paramount.

You can thank the Hayes Code for the censorship.
The point was it had to be safe for the smallest tots to watch, as if they would want to watch this.
54 years ago and she's still entertaining.
As great as M.G. is here (and she IS great, of course!), those male dancers are absolutely fantastic as well !

There's a line in that song that says, "when wrestlers go to drama classes to learn how to please the masses". I'd love to wrestle Mitzi ! ! !
Mitzi is great. Vera Ellen is #1 in my book!

More than that was changed by this time. The song had virtually been rewritten by then!
