There were so many truly great dancers who did comedy. ,drama, that unfortunately the younger generations have never seen...we watched so many films that were already old when I was a kid.....the magic is they all are still alive ...thanks to those who started preserving their films....back then you better a dancer, singer,a comic, do drama ect ect...I'm thankful that my childred and grandkids who have seen many of these old films enjoys them also. MY ELDEST SON has went to see just about everyone of them that One Theater in larger city shows about three or four times a year...He Reserved tickets... He wanted to see them like they were first shown...White Christmas was. The 1st one since then he has probably saw about 20 from 40s and 59s ..He even went to see iorginal 1932 king king with Faye Wray and Bruce Cabot...My youngest son (Now in his thirties and having son ) came home when he was in 5th grade and I had a Harold Lloyd , Ect.week he sat down and wanted to k ow what I was watching I told him ...turned out a majority of kids at school had got hook because they saw them at school...during break time. He said all the kids liked the old movies...I really appreciated his teachers... Laurel and Hardy ..still lives...of course we all grew up watching the masters Moe, Larry, Shimp,And Curly...and Littles Rascals ect.... I keep up with their kids and grandkids...There are two of them that look so much like "Curly" it's great to know how much their fathers are still loved .

Mitzi Gaynor was multi talented, she could sing, dance and act as good as anyone. I think that she was very much underused in the film industry, she would have been unequaled as a female lead if she had been given more and better exposure. I was lucky enough to go to one of her live shows in Las Vegas and it was one of the best nights of my life, I remember it as if it were yesterday.

Little girls back then couldn't wait to wear heels. When we were given hand me downs, we were always given a few pairs of dated or worn out heels to play in. As children, we were also encouraged to walk up on our toes for fun. When I got my first pair of heels in grade school, they were no trouble at all. I could easily walk around balancing on the spike alone. Females have a difference knee structure that allows them to do this.😅

She was right about herself. Hard worker, charming and eager to please but never able to grab a film by the scruff of the neck and make it hers alone- like June Haver or June Powell, and unlike Charisse or Grable.
'South Pacific' was her best chance, and she is at least OK, but her Lt Forbush could and should have been a Streisand/Funny Girl moment.
By all accounts Mitzi, like Fanny Brice, Mary Martin and Ethel Merman, went over much bigger with live audiences. Some performers need that continuous feedback to encourage them. Being directed by Joshua Logan, who never knew how to make movies out of shows, was no substitute.

Too true. No sleaze. No foul language, and NO CGI, it was all achieved by the talent of the stars. @iworby It is so nice to find some people still have respect for pure talent.

Wow. Mitzi Gaynor. The reason women should return to wearing dresses. I think I'm in love.

yes... they are very special entertainers - so joyous and heart warming. Did I say highly talented too? - I use the present tense because i feel they are still very much alive now...!!!

This dance routine works ridiculously well, and technically there are very few places where they can cut and move the camera,,, but it plays just as if its an extended one-shot, beautifully worked out. Mitzi Gaynor siding down 30 degree inclines, climbing ladders, and dancing on a thin rail... in heels. Had to be a lot of tough days, but they had plenty of makeup to cover the bruises.

Two things: 1. I love movies where tap shoes suddenly appear on people's feet!
    2. Aren't there people under those windows, Mitzi? They're getting an eyeful!

Swamface.....It`s a movie, it is not real life. They are made to entertain, not depict everyday life.

I love how the deck chairs have CGT on them, from the famous shipping line Compagnie Generale Transatlantique which pioneered art deco design and streamlined modernism to the high seas in pure elegance, having liners such as the Normandie, Ile de France, De Grasse, L'atlantique and Liberte.

Yes, it IS crazy, and no bloody CGI, it`s all down to their talent. But I am almost ninety years of age, and I can remember queueing at the "Majestic" a cinema in Leeds, for two solid hours to watch this movie when it was first released, and the wait was worth every second of discomfort just to witness such perfection.

Oldkiesel: Absolutely right. I've mentioned him to people, and they respond with 'who?' And if I mention Fred Astaire, or Bing Crosby, or Sinatra or Kelly, they instantly recognize them. It's frustrating, seeing as he's one of my favorites.
