I’m so happy we’re giving O’Conner the Recognition he deserves, he doesn’t have “the look” for the lead man, but his talent for dancing is virtually toe-to-to with Kelly.

I always considered Donald O'Conner a cross between Kelly and Astaire. He had Kelly's energy and athleticism combined with Astaire's grace. Danny Kaye is another dancer that combines both.

There's something about his dance that other very skilled dancers never had. He makes it seem easy and more than anything, fun. The way he smiles and makes it look effortless even though it's not... That's Gene Kelly.

That’s the mark of any great dancer, singer and instrumentalist. The technique has to be just a tool for expression! Once it becomes about “oh, look how high, or oh my god, how difficult!” it’s no longer art, it’s circus!

It's an interesting comparison, but of course, Kelly wins hands down, not taking anything away from Mr. O'Connor.(Who was a chain smoker, so you have to admire his stamina.) It's similar to comparing Gene to Fred. Fred was lighter on his feet being slight of build, as was Donald compared to Gene, but what Kelly had over both of them was the muscularity, especially in his legs, perhaps with credit to his early days in sports like baseball and especially hockey. That's why Kelly was known as the "working man's dancer" or, "man's man dancer". Fred was elegant and debonair, Donald was cute and light and fleet of foot, but Gene was handsome, solid, muscular, and talented in every aspect of dancing, merely lacking in ballroom. But, who would want to try to match Fred on that one?

When I first went to Hollywood to work in the film industry in the 1970's, I went to what were called "Revival" theaters, like the NuArt on Santa Monica Blvd and others scattered around LA. I met an old foley artist there who explained to me that "all those taps you're hearing... aren't from the dancer. They're from me." In other words, the "taps" were added to the soundtrack, often to enhance a dancer's abilities. So all of those syncopated taps you hear are from a foley artist in sound room watching the film and matching their taps to the dancer's feet. True.

I just watched a recent documentary (Merely Marvelous: The Dancing Genius of Gwen Verdon) where Gwen tells Dick Cavett that she provided the final tap sounds for the "Singing in the Rain" dance number. She had to dance in pans of water to get the right sounds. I have no reason to not believe her, but I prefer to think that Gene did it all himself, or at least dubbed himself.

I love the types of movies he made. There's been a few attempts in these recent years to kinda capture their magic and magnificence, "La La Land" and "The Greatest Showman" and shit like that, but the performers just aren't capable of the things these people could do. Lucky we have access to these old works, people like Fred and Judy, Ginger and Danny, Gene and Bing and Eleanor. Don't know where I'd be without 'em.

Equally impressive in all these sequences is the camerawork. Those big cameras weren’t autofocus and they were heavy, making them difficult to move. The focus-pullers and grips had a very hard job to get the movements made so precisely. Lots of rehearsal involved. Mr. Kelly had to hit his marks exactly, too, in order for him to be framed correctly as he and the camera moved together.
