He was 22. This was 1989 during his run as Billy Crocker at Prince Edward Theater. 22 years old and his first professional theater credit is the male lead on the West End. With Elaine Paige no less.
At words poetic, I'm so pathetic That I always have found it best, Instead of getting 'em off my chest, To let 'em rest unexpressed. I hate parading my serenading As I'll probably miss a bar, But if this ditty is not so pretty, At least it'll tell you how great you are. You're the top! You're the Colosseum, You're the top! You're the Louvre Museum, You're a melody from a symphony by Strauss, You're a Bendel bonnet, a Shakespeart sonnet, You're Mickey Mouse. You're the Nile, You're the Tow'r of Pisa, You're the smile on the Mona Lisa. I'm a worthless check, a total wreck, a flop, But if, Baby, I'm the bottom, You're the top! Your words poetic are not pathetic On the other hand, boy, you shine And I can feel after every line A thrill divine down my spine. Now gifted humans like Vincent Youmans Might think that your song is bad, You're the top! You're Mahatma Ghandi. You're the top! You're Napolean brandy. You're the purple light of a summer night in Spain, You're the National Gall'ry, You're Garbo's sal'ry, You're cellophane. You're sublime, You're a turkey dinner. You're the time of the Derby winner. I'm a toy balloon that is fated soon to pop. But if, Baby, I'm the bottom, You're the top! You're the top! You're an Arrow collar. You're the top! You're a Coolidge dollar. You're the nimble tread of the feet of Fred Astaire, You're an O'Neill drama, You're Whistler's mama, You're Camembert. You're a rose, You're Inferno's Dante, You're the nost of the great Durante. I'm just in the way, as the French would say "De trop, " But if, Baby, I'm the bottom, You're the top. You're the top! You're a dance in Bali. You're the top! You're a hot tamale. You're an angel, you simply too, too, too divine, You're a Botticelli, You're Keats, You're Shelley, You're Ovaltine. You're a boon, You're the dam at Boulder, You're the moon over Mae West's shoulder. I'm a nominee of the G.O.P. or GOP, But if, Baby, I'm the bottom, You're the top! You're the top! You're a Waldorf salad. You're the top! You're a Berlin ballad. You're a baby grand of a lady and a gent. You're an old dutch master, You're Mrs. Aster, You're Pepsodent. You're romance, You're the steppes of Russia, You're the pants on a Roxy usher
If you want to se something cool: watch this, then watch his 2003 version right after. It is fasinating to see how much more comfortable and confidant he is. The growth as a performer is wonderful.
@@bigred8432 Are you a professional dancer or a singer? Because I was for 30 years and it doesn't make me right, necessarily, but I stand by my opinion.
I am indeed. There is hardly any choreography in this staging. It’s fabulous and both of them are wonderful here but to say that there is a lot of choreography is untrue, a lot of the time they are stood still. This kind of staging is a walk in the park for a trained musical theatre performer.
@Hannah Shoshana - 1989 ? Think that's when I saw them ! Prince Edward Theatre sounds right - must have been shortly after Elaine was at the same theatre in Chess - saw that twice ! Bernard Cribbins was in "Anything Goes", too, if I remember rightly.
All very well saying he is a star.......mediocre at best.....where is he now.? Cheap parts in panto..and couldnt even keep a hold of them due to his bad behaviour. Just google it and find out. I will never understand why people get so taken in with this garbage
Ehhhh. I hate this musical. So damn corny... Why couldn't my school do Les Miserables, for which we won a Kenny Award, like last year? Or Sweeney Todd? Or Woman in White? Or Chess, goddamnit?!
A true "STAR" was clearly born... (Thanks Elaine for elevating him!!)
He was 22. This was 1989 during his run as Billy Crocker at Prince Edward Theater. 22 years old and his first professional theater credit is the male lead on the West End. With Elaine Paige no less.
And she was nearly 20 years older.
God he's gorgeous…my eyes are literally hearts when I watch him. Elaine of course is amazing as well, as she always is!
You ain't kidding. Tall, talented, and gorgeous.
Cole, the greatest, wittiest most elegant "list maker " ever.
John was born for this. just look at him, this is his first lead in a West End show!
Judy is BEAUTIFUL here and the entire film. At 4’11” she had the best legs in Hollywood.❤️
They look like they are having a great time! She sounds so good! He is so handsome and sings fantastic! Love them both!
What a voice she has!
This was wonderful! Those two were perfect together. What fun. Thank you!
Colin Donnel has also played Billy Crocker. To any Arrow fans, anyone else think it's awesome that Malcolm Merlyn and Tommy have both played this? =P
Ya
Ikr
JB is amazing! and this video just proves it!
They are sooo good together, how come I have never seen this?
this is the best performance of you're the top.
memorizing the lyrics requires a good memory.
Saw him in London in anything goes twice it was so fabulous
A new side of "Captain Jack";-)
Somehow I have never seen this version.. it was excellent! I think this is my favorite one.
Elaine SANGS this song. I really love her as Reno.
JOHN BARROWMAN YAAAASSS
Something so funny about John playing Billy is that on Arrow, Colin Donnell who played his son was the same part in anything goes with Sutton Foster
This recording has to be from 1989-90! 25 years old in 2015!
John was born in 11 March 1967 in Glasgow
John is so young!!! Love it thanks!!
I'm the Nominee of the GOP!!
Thank you soo much for posting this!! It's fantastic, and John is so adorable!
Brilliantly done, a great tribute to a classic song
Perfection.
You are welcome!))) Young John the most handsome. There are very few videos with him from those years.

Very good, but Ethel Merman’s passion is missing!
When that's cheered up 4 months ( third one) in lockdown. x
I thought i had seen every version of this song. How did I miss the one with John Barrowman in it!!?
How was this his first lead! God what a start!
It is kind of good she is a really good singer
If you want to se something cool: watch this, then watch his 2003 version right after. It is fasinating to see how much more comfortable and confidant he is. The growth as a performer is wonderful.
john is so adorable!!!
She is one of my favorite Renos
Thank you sooo much - EP is wonderful!!
wow - what a performance!
This is great! John looks so young, but he still so talented. What year is this from? Thanks for posting.
He's so pretty! Awesome duet. It's the FIRST role of John! I adore it =)
Incredible number; a lot of choreography in there to be singing with.
Hardly.

I didn't realise how small Elaine Paige was!
4 foot 11+Inches
A petite stick of dynamite.
Awesome!
"Театральный" Джон особенно мне нравится вот как раз в эти времена. Побольше бы таких номеров! :)
I dare you to try not to smile while watching this.
BARROWMAN!
Did she just say "You're a waldorf salad" at 3:28?
LOL
simhopp well Waldorf salad is pretty good.
+simhopp And cellophane...well to keep it all fresh.
And don't forget the broccoli! x')
No
Yes, Waldorf salad was new and pretty hot at the time Porter wrote the song.

Captain Jack can sing!!!!!
Its Captain Jack from Doctor Who xD
@canton3731 Woulda been 1990
I think Jon Barrowman replaced Howard McGillin who was horrible to work with. I remember the cast being happy he left and Jon assumed that role.
Masters of sex
Thought she was Amy Poehler
Well not bad. At least she’s better than Beryl Reed!
