  • In a reverse of what happened with "Evita," Elaine Paige took the role created by Patti LuPone when the hit 1987 Lincoln Center Theater production of "Anything Goes" traveled to London in 1989. Paige took along LuPone's NY leading man, Howard McGillin, with McGillin eventually replaced by John Barrowman. Here are just about all of Elaine Paige's vocals from the London '89 "Anything Goes," the five big numbers assembled here in show order from various telecasts: "I Get a Kick Out of You"; "You're the Top" (with John Barrowman); "Friendship" (with Bernard Cribbins); "Anything Goes"; "Blow, Gabriel, Blow." I saw Elaine Paige in Sunset Blvd in New York in about 1995. I sat in the Orchestra section, and I swear when Norma loses her mind she looked straight at me and I thought I was gonna die. She was wonderful and terrifying.

      I was fortunate enough to see Elaine in Sunset Blvd in London and, in my opinion, she was the definitive Norma ... nobody else can touch her performance. She even look eerily like Gloria Swanson.

    She is perfection. I saw her in this show 4 times. I recently saw Sutton Foster. I will not compare. That's for idiots. Instead I celebrate I was there to witness two tour de force performances. But Elaine as an actress and singer in this and her other roles demonstrates she is one of THE greatest if not THE greatest musical actresses we have ever had to grace the West End. Her range and variety of part is incredible

    • @auroraspiderwoman5886
      @auroraspiderwoman5886  2 года назад +8

      Not comparing is the smartest and most admirable thing to do--Elaine, Patti, and Sutton were all wonderful Renos. But I agree that Elaine is the absolute tops in the UK, the most elegant singer with the most thrilling voice and tons of stage presence. Those in the US often think of Patti as the only Evita, or Betty as Grizabella, but Elaine created those roles and the others followed.

    PBS and Yorkshire TV wanted to tape this production with Page and Barrowman for Great Performances. I worked to try to secure the rights from the owners, but they weren't serious about negotiating, thinking that their future stage rights would be limited by a television production that could be available on home video. In retrospect, they were absurd. It's for that reason that a commercial record of this terrific production does not exiost.

      That is fascinating---had no idea that attempt was made. According to the latest word/rumor, they're going to preserve for telecast the current London "Anything Goes" with Sutton Foster, Robert Lindsay, Felicity Kendall, etc.

    I saw Anything Goes while on vacation in London back in the 80's because I was a fan of Elaine Paige and how could you not love Cole Porter? She was amazing and was surprised at how many well-known songs were in the show. It was also my first introduction to John Barrowman (pre Captain Jack) and loved his voice.

    There's always the comparisons as to who is the better Reno in Anything Goes. Some say it's Merman, some say LuPone, some say Paige, some say Foster. Every one of these talented actresses have done a great job, based on the director's vision of the show. The one point, however, that makes Foster stand out, in my mind however, is that, of all the clips I've seen here on YT, she's the ONLY professional actress that has danced ALL THE WAY THROUGH the big numbers and still has the lungs to belt out the final chorus. Mad props to her for her triple-threat skills.
