The first showreel by Giovanni Bocchi contained copyright claimed music so I'm afraid I had to replace it. I did my best to capture the vibe with what I had. Please watch the original in all it's glory here: vimeo.com/385007593 It really takes it to another level. Sorry, Giovanni.
I love how you don’t sugar coat your advice. You want to help animators and you give straight honest advice how to improve. Love the content keep it up
Great work Giovanni, Kuba, and Aimee. I think it was Chris Do in his SoM podcast interview that said by 10-15 seconds he already knows if he's going to call you or not. Also, Aimee, for whatever it's worth, I thought the shot at 9:02 that Ben suggested to remove might attract certain corporate clients. I hope we keep seeing reel reviews like this, very helpful.
I definitely agree about the first 10 seconds, gotta make that opening strong for that reason. Good point about that one shot. It definitely depends on what work you want to get out of your reel. :D Thanks for the awesome comment my man
I kind of want you to review some really shocking bad reels so I have more relevant advice for how to revamp mine 🤣 But it is awesome to see people's amazing work too and your feedback on all these awesome artists!
Wow, another great portfolio review! I think after watching a lot of these I feel that i'm starting to take note of what's important and what's weakest so I can self-edit a bit before I post. It takes a lot of guts to put your stuff out there and I love how you're both honest and gentle about it so we can all grow together.
Really enjoying this series. Would be nice to see some less jaw-dropping reels too, which is why I've submitted mine and every time excited to see if it made it or not, haha.
8:13 I was curious what you were going to say about Jack Stauber because I'm not sure what the professional opinion is of using copyright music in a reel. I've heard varying opinions. Is it okay? Would you avoid it?
Maybe try something analog if there's no other way just now. Something like flipbooks, sketching, comics, what ever. If you find something you like ,you might find that it helps your designs once you have a pc
Hi Ben I really like your work. I just graduated and feel in love with motion design recently. Could you maybe make videos explaining where to start, how to get good at it at professional level or maybe share your story? I see a lot of great work and only wish to get this good at one point but not sure how lol Thank you :)]
I looove this kind of content Ben, Keep it going. I didn't Study graphic design or animation but I am trying to learn on my own. Could you please make a video with advice for people like me who are self-taught and don't really have a clue on how to proceed? what to learn? Good courses to take? Thanks! Ps. I really admire your work. Much love from Colombia :)
Hello Ben :D some of my works are in vertical format, mostly for instagram stories. Do I need to rework it into horizontal format? Or put some explanation text to fill the blank space? Or the text will be distracting? I have been searching for some showreel that has vertical works, but never finds it haha. Do you have any advice? Thank youu 😀😀😀
Jesus was this a reel or short film? All went well together. Fair to say it’s a Cinema4D reel?! Ok so now back to the drawing board. Mine looks nothing like this and is all in AE... sigh
The content itself was good, but the presentation was boring. It looks like there was no thought given to the editing. A great demo reel will not only show you stunning work, but it should also lead you on a path visually with the connection between chosen shots. That aspect was non-existent.

...I think I actually like the replacement music you chose better than the original, great work.
detore same
wow.... it REALLY takes it to another level, glad i watched it
Damn that was whole vibe. Just saw it. Its amazing

I bet they all named their layers in each project
If I find out otherwise there's going to be hell to pay...
Uh oh..

Haha, I might have to do a special call-out for "send me your first reel" I don't want to be too mean.
Thank you for taking the time to review these works!

The first one (the best) and third one were so fun to watch, the second was just annoying, couldn't wait for it to end
terrific stuff
Damn motion graphics is cool and i really want to try to do some but unfortunately i don't have pc or laptop
That sucks my friend, hopefully you can find a way to mograph soon :)
@@BenMarriott yeah man i really hope so, mograph is one of my favorite things other than graphics design 😂
I got a laptop last year and I need the skills. Giovanni bocchi really shook me.

I am working on creating my first, and proudly produced, showreel. IDK how long it will take... so time to work more!
in comparison it's not as difficult to execute yeah, but I feel all shots on this first reel are essential, I love the lighthouse one.

Ben Marriott no problem. I really enjoy your after effects tutorials

Hi Ben! I have already sent my reel in the firsts reviews, I need to send again or their still count?
Exuse me but what amazing in this reel? Nothing fancy!
Very helpfull tips here thank you.
Are willing to do any similaire review on small projects, so we can learn from our mistakes?
Ayyyyy Ben!!!!! How are you doing? lol
I'm doing pretty well all things considered. How are you? :)
@@BenMarriott Thats great to hear!!! I love how you reply to many comments! And I'm doing quite swell bro haha
I already submitted my reel last time. Do I need to resubmit? Enjoying this a lot😁
p.s. reel is uploaded on my youtube too.
I wanna start motion graphic but dont know where to start
Open up After Effects and just start clicking until something starts moving! The best way to learn is by doing and failing... a lot
@@BenMarriott I started by learning to create vectors on illustration maybe next step will be to animate them on after effects

Yes it's mostly Cinema 4D and Redshift. All the post-production is done in AE
"Brutal"
Does anyone know the name of the song in Aimee’s reel? It sounded like a Jack Stauber tune and I love it.
Found it, it’s called Cheeseburger Family.
4:10 IS THIS POLAND REFERENCE??????????
It sure is!

Your thumbnail looks like the creepy guy from Vivarium
Am I the only one thinking he has rly white teeth? Idk mine are yel
Please increase the mic, it's low and compared to the intro music, which just deafened me, also low
Most VFX Houses turn the music off when reviewing work
Sorta early squad hahah
Too late buddy, get outta here!
Don't know if you ever get suggested reels for this section of your channel, but here is one that was cool: vimeo.com/464754898
How dare you deslike this video?!
Woo one of the first here!

Very pretentious to comment and critic better people than you!! And I mean better by far
lol, you’re so dumb
