That first reel is stunning! But the third one was about 60% from school of motion design motion beast course
And learn squared course
Been a huge follower/pupil of your work, Ben! Love this new concept you're bringing to the channel of reel critiques, too. You're not only helping these individuals with their own reels but helping all of us out with knowing what sticks out and what slows us down. You've truly made me a better MoGFX designer since I started following you and I look forward to hearing more of your perspective on our industry :')
You have my vote for more of these reel reviews!
-Regretting not submitting before watching
-Glad I did not submit after watching first one
Ha! my thoughts exactly! Ben do you do private reviews? - joking I'm sure you're too busy, I'm too scared to share mine now.
SO SCARED LOL
Thank you for your great content and advices about these showreels!
You helped me to look at my showreel from different angle and I'm going to improve my next one!
You're so welcome! Your reel was great. I had a lot of fun watching and critiquing it. Keep up the awesome work! :D
Oh god people are so talended !!! I feel bad, I submited my work but it's nowhere good as that. Thank you for making that !
Don't feel bad at all, we're all at different stages of our journey. :) Thanks for watching
Dont be dissuaded by amazing reels... A lot of the time it is a team effort... When I was first starting out I used to look at peoples reels who only had a few years experience and it really made me feel like i wasnt learning fast enough... then I discovered that even if you partake in a small fraction of a huge project is it acceptable to post the best parts of that project... I personally would not do that but I see some of the best reels usually the designer did not do all of the work alone... but that is just the nature of this business when sometimes a 30 second TV spot can take over a week or more to create alone.... Either way dont let amazing reels get you down...
Woowwhh that feels so good,i wanna be this awesome in mograph....
Please check out and giv some valid review

Ben u hv been doin great work by the way
It is very exciting to see those showreels and what different highlights you nitpick from them! Must admit I am also intimidated as I sent you a showreel far underneath that level but hey..! I already learned something from this review!!
Hi, love this! I love the concept of giving feedback on subscribers work, It's every motion designers dream come true :) You're being very respectful and helpful. Great work :)
You rock man, your videos had been of su much help to improve my work. Keep on! Thx
i think i can watch such video all my life because u , ur views and they way u critic is very inspirational
These people are incredible!!! So much talent in one video.
Dope video as always. I feel very lucky to have found your channel. Wish you nothing but success and thank you for all the content you provide!
The participants are very talented and promising!!! *You Go, Guys!!!*
This was good Ben. More please!!
Great video man as always! please more Reel critiques, this format is very helpful
That thumbnail!!! LMAO - Love these Ben - #3 felt like a 'reel' by proxy...#4 was my fav and the intro was badass!! All great animators regardless. Thanks for sharing
Awesome thank you! Glad you like it!! :)
Just found this series and I love it. Just started motion design myself and these videos help so much in regards to building a portfolio out. I want more!!!!
This was very interesting, I think sits well with the 20 tips for reels video as well. I vote: CARRY on up the CRITIQUING!
love the reel review portion. I see some of my own mistakes in the work you talk about so I found it helpful. Also it's just fun.
Yesss please continue this saga! :D
I've never done any kind of animation but these are so exciting to watch! Maybe I should take an animation course next semester :D
Yes, please do more!
Such awesome content. I really like your style and always get so much inspiration from your methods. It's nice to see such great feedback on portfolios since the market is being filled up with so many great artists.
Unfortunately I know that portfolio 3 is mostly from the Motion Design Beastmode course. Still well executed.
Got the notifications! looking forward to how this one goes
Havent even finished it yet, but yes please! I'd love to see more of these critiques and feedbacks!
Fantastic Ben. Not harsh at all (responding to your comment on IG). I was part of a hiring team at my last job and I absolutely loved looking at reels and seeing new work, being inspired, and of course judging them all! Haha! So I would absolutely watch more in this format. In fact, as I was watching these, I started typing my own thoughts/comments. Almost like an exercise of recording first impressions - comparing and sharing a lot of your thoughts too. Think there's any value in posting my comments here? I gotta a good paragraph for each artist, and it's certainly a public forum, but I don't wanna muddle the thoughts from you. Lookin' forward to more reels!!
more of this please loving peoples work so inspiring
These critique vids are great, Ben!
Great video! Finally got the push to update my way too old showreel.
God I laughed at the cover pic for this, good stuff mate
Usually I just watch your videos a few days after they come out, but this one I watched first thing in the morning, as soon as I could. I am reel obsessed, I update my reel at least twice a month, so a pro analyzing reels is meth to me. the "little moments to breathe" was a great tip. I would definitely watch more user-generated content from you. Maybe after corona you could invite a motion design friend over and have an in-depth debate about your recommendations?
This is really helpful please make more of these!!
I will always watch these types of video from you.
I got a lot out of watching this video and hope you keep doing it. I like that you show the reel and then go back and make your comments. This gave me a chance to make my own evaluations and then see how they matched up with yours. If this is enjoyable and efficient content for you to create, I suspect your audience would gladly watch this series on a weekly basis.
Like 272 other people, I hope you pick mine for next time.
Thanks so much! :D That's amazing to read, I really (reely? heh) appreciate it. Glad that format works, I wasn't sure whether I should jump straight in. Thanks for the support!
@@BenMarriott The format is solid IMO. I think the one point of confusion for me was whether or not I needed to resubmit my reel via the form to be considered for the potential next video.
One other idea I wanted to suggest that would grow the community on this channel and cost you very little effort is a weekly or monthly community project or assignment similar to Peter McKinnon's PM Photo assignments that he does each Tuesday. You would give a theme and/or parameters and we make an animation based it. Submissions could be via Instagram # so your brand would grow there at the same time. The effort from you could be as minimal as resharing a few of the submissions or even as much as a roundup video highlighting some nice pieces and then announcing the next theme.
For me, it can be difficult to keep motivation up creating practice projects for myself that don't have a purpose, and this sort of community participation project would be motivating. Just a thought. I realize you've only got so many hours in the day.
@@BenMarriott thumbs up for the inside joke :)
I really appreciate this type of video. I found you a couple of weeks ago and have been binge-watching some of your tutorials (and I've seen some improvement :) thank you! ). I'll soon graduate from Motion Graphics, and I'm currently working on picking my best work to soon build my showreel. Watching your critique really helps me know what to do, and grow as an artist :) Thanks Ben, you're awesome! 💜
Glad you like them! Thank you so much for the amazing comment! :)
Wow regardless though everyones work looks awesome, inspiring goodies! Lmao and that thumbnail caught my eye 😂
Damn.... im finishing mine right now, it’s quite interesting to hear your tips. Will send a link when it’s finished!!
I love to see more .. !! 😍
Yes, yes, yes!! More of this!
I feel like these reviews should be a weekly thing, just like your tutorials :)
Solid format! I really like this kind of video, so as far as I'm concerned I'd love if you kept making them lol
I love it, got me putting together my own showreel, will send it to you when its done
Love the format, now I want a new reel :O
Keep doing them!!!
I would love to see more!!
The first reel was our favourite
I'm a character animator, but I'm learning a lot from this motion graphics critique. Might try some more motion graphic-y stuff just for fun. Even if I never build this type of reel, it never hurts to have a broad range of techniques, experiences, and inspirations in the back pocket.
Love your thoughts/review. Makes me see thru new eyes. More please....;.]
Love this
Haha, you're so kind, I literally thought you'd be as mean as the thumbnail photo :)
I making my first video showw reel. I following your tricks. Thank you so mutch Ben ♥
i noticed an intro for a Persian BBC show in the first reel. now i know who's making those that i see every day on tv
Reels are fun and a worthwhile exercise, but to be honest, a portfolio to me is better. I want to see the completed projects you've done. It's easy to cut something slick together using the best few seconds from several projects. What's much more telling, is how you handle a full project and keep it visually interesting the whole length of the video. If you can show me that, I'm much more interested in hiring you than just what you put on your polished reel. I still like these break downs though!
Excellent tips man... I´ve got some editing to do. Cheers.
go on king
This is such a great resource 👏🏼👏🏼
Also, you are such a great resource!!
Great thumbnail haha 😄 I can tell you're about to crack up
Haha, you know it :)
Very useful to see.
Now I know how to create showreel properly!!
More of this!!
Andre Baptista, representando o Brasil 👏👏👏👏
YEEESSS!!!!!!!! PLS!!!!
Hi Ben, this is a great video. Can you create a video about how to make a reel? Such as how to decide which part of a video should be included in a reel, how to decide what kind of editing would suit a reel best. A reel consists of different projects and bad editing would make the end product all over the place. Thank you! :)
They're great, tho the first one looks like a compilation of tutorials we found cool back in 2010
With reels the hardest part I find is a lot of reels show work that has been done in teams... Sometimes large teams... Does that justify say if I was a colorist on a huge Disney project should I post the most amazing clip in a show reel from the film? I almost feel that is deceitful slightly but I guess most resumes are usually "fluffed" anyway... That has always been my issues when hiring from show reels... Usually some of the best reels are usually team and/or studio based... but I have also seen reels where they state the sections they have been part of specifically... I feel that should be a prerequisite when distributing a reel...
Professionals Specify what they have worked on exactly, that's the ethical thing to do at least.
Wonderful videos! would you consider doing 360 detailed character turns??? and detailed face rigs! that'd be so awesome!!!
so many talented person. ;)
Please review showreel every week
almost 200k ben!
Thanks for the support man! :)
@@BenMarriott no prob. I wish one day I will be better at motion design
chulada!!!
ben you are my fav person on the internet.
I did multimedia tech at uni but I basically ended up completely abandoning it and I’m now working in a pharmacy. Only now at 30 I’m thinking of getting back into it but I’ve forgotten so much 🙁
I am an architect and I only know how to use AI buuut I love watching your videos, I learn a lot from your videos keep doing them pleaaase
Awesome content, these showreels were so good! If you review some less strong videos you'll be able to give a bit more advice and that would be even greater ;)
Wow O:
I am following you from Egypt
Same here😂👌
where are you from
Oh, I still didn't watch the video, but I must say, your hair looks nice, I would like to touch it, it looks smooth 🧴
gaaayyyy.... sorry couldn't help it!
Haha, why thank you so much. But to prepare you for it... I'm getting it cut as soon as I have a chance XD
Being 32, the first one made me seriously consider my chances in the industry…that’s some scary level skill, really need to do my homework..
Hello Ben, could you please tell who drew the picture at 7:55 on the left (three-story arch with women in pink and green)? It's beautiful
That's Sean Morris, an incredible Australian artist. I love that print
Fun fact, the Gloria in this video also made the Lofi girl suicide video
The third one was very cool, it's a shame most things come from courses
I would love to get a chance to have my work reviewed! Should we send you vimeo links? And would you review a few more reels??
😁
até Brasileiro mandou pra ele, foda demais!
Is that a young Earl Grey Print in the background ?
Yes! :D Rhea's my friend & a crazy talented artist. I wish I could draw expressive humans and clothing as well as she can.
Which after effects plug-ins are free?
The dude at 6:41 ripped off my illustration haha, no worries, but it’s a bummer because he didn’t do a very good job. Would have been cool to see it done well!
10:29 It's not a Scool of Motion fundamentals.
It's Motion Design School's free "Fundamentals on After Effects course": motiondesign.school/products/fundamentals-course-on-after-effects
Also this reel is 80% of Motion Design School designs (Motion Beast course).
P.S. Javier, you did a really cool animation job!
if that first reel is cut into 30 seconds, itll be way too sick
Ben: I watch a lot of RUclips tutorials and know what's out there
Anatoly Anfilatov: 11:21
Ben (and everyone): *man! does this guy have a RUclips channel?!*
can you teach Us how to make Geometrix?. i love your Motion Graphics Style. can you make arabic geometrix with your style? for basic & easy tutorial. because i am Noob 😢
These are so good they're discouraging. Well, I guess motion graphics was not meant for me... time to take on something else ☹
Such a shame that none of these designers took on your advice. 3 left their exactly the same and one just deleted the video. Hopefully in later reviews people actually take on your feedback.
I also don't like when people put stuff from tutorials in their reel, it's so boring and uniteresting. the first and the last one where the best for sure, I could see genuine talent and original ideas
Im shit compared toh this man 😂😂😂
I never seen you look so mean before In the thumbnail 🤐
Nice critiques. Too soft on the 3rd dude though.
It's supposed to be "between you and *ME*" at 5:58 Please pay attention to grammar when working or else your work might not be seen as professional
Hello from Ukraine, lt’s patty that your videos haven’t Russian subtitles
I did my first Motion Graphics Reel, can you maybe check it out?
