this is awesome. made me think of another challenge in the same vein of kerbals being scared: no manned vehicles as soon as possible/outside of the ksc. vessels can be sent anywhere, as long as they're unmanned. manned vessels and kerbals are only allowed on the ksc
This is actually my very favorite way to play KSP! I like how each mission requires planning ahead so that communications do not break down between probes and kerbin. The jool missions I did were pretty awesome because I would send carrier-ships to go deliver comms probes to all the moons and setup a network so that I didn't lose control of the craft part way through.
The Space Kraken is indeed real and the chances to encounter it are directly linked to the amound of parts you used in your vessel in combination with the amount of speed-up you use *g*
How to science: a guide for every sentient species in this universe: Step 1: Build a spaceport (this task is left as an exercise to the reader) Step 2: Investigate every detail about the spaceport you just built and its surroundings Congratulations. You now have science.
I just built my first ever mobile lab and with my crewed minimal minmus run (of like 3 or 4 biomes) after about 5 years of researching I've maxed out the tech tree for the first time
Interesting that you can upload the data in flight and then process on the ground without penalty. I did a build where a solar-powered (prop) plane did an equatorial solar-synchronous flight, i.e. flew around Kerbin at the same speed Kerbin rotated, so it stayed in the sun and powered. It required ~180 m/s at ~10km from only an electric rotor. It would be interesting to see if such a plane could be built with a science lab onboard, for a permanent aerial research station.
There's a better alternative to the tumble dryer, once you get the steerable landing gear. If you make a craft with a steerable landing gear and a pod at the front, and 2 fixed landing gear and your science things at the back, you can build up some decent speed using only the reaction wheels by wiggling it back and fourth like a rip stick, and it's WAY easier to steer. The fixed landing gear need to be significantly further from the command pod than the the steerable one is, though. When I'm being lazy and cheesing the KSC science to get a bit further before I start actually launching rockets, that's my preferred craft until I get rover wheels.
this seems quite accurate to real life, back in 1967 my uncle worked for Nasa, and he told me that Werner von Braun was rolling around in some mud one day, and suddenly just knew how to build a Saturn V! Ig you call me a liar your cyber bullying me.
Now do it again but with a bunch of mods like KSP interstellar and the community tech tree :D Technically going to warp from the surface of kerbin isn't going to space since you're taking the "surface reality" with you until you go out of warp
Considering that I got like 2000 science just from driving around the KSC, space isn't even necessary. But yes, the high altitude surveys are annoying even when you can go to space. Building something that can maneuver in atmosphere but also reach those >16k altitude but also reach the other side of the planet without running out of fuel.
Yeah, i agree. Space can be very dangerous. Like today, when i did a very long, but BADASS Duna mission. Here’s what happened: It all strated when me, in a carreer save, wanted to go to Eve, since every contract said that i should. However, i didn’t have the Vector engine yet, which is VERY useful when taking off from Eve. So, i decided that i would send Jeb to Duna to get some science points. So, we departed. On the way, i noticed that I was going to encounter Ike while passing through Duna’s SOI. I figured, eh, i have a lot of delta V, might as well land. So, i made a quick pit stop. Then landed on Duna, planted a (Hungarian) flag, did some 🧫 science, but when I got into orbit, i saw that i only had approx. 700 m/s of delta V left. I consulted the in-game maneuver generator, set Kerbin as a target, got a 600 m/s burn, 3 YEARS from then. So, i had to make Jeb wait for 3 years, TWICE, since i made a mistake on the first attempt, then did the Duna-Kerbin transfer. But, the next problem was not only that i used all my parachutes on the Duna landing, but i has about 24 000 km away on periapsis. So, that’s how a small pit stop to Ike resulted in me having to sen up ANOTHER ROCKET, with Valentina literally having to catch the ship as it flew by Kerbin, make a high-speed rendezvous on an escape trajectory, transfer Jeb over from the original ship, along with all the data, and, after all that, I somehow STILL managed to land less than 100 km away from the space center. But, everything turned out great at the end, Jeb was able to make it back home from his 4year+ journey, i got all the science points, managed to unlock the Vector engine, and i think we can all agree, that THAT was FRICKING BADASS.
This video was amazing. Thank you for sharing it. You've earned yourself a brand spanking new, shiny subscribe from me. Hope to see what else you make in the future.
You could actually steer The Tumble Dryer™by lowering the torque limit / authority of the command pod on the side you want to steer to, resulting in a higher speed of the other side. Basically like the differential in a FWD car works, just the other way around.
It does kinda feel like the science lab was designed for a KSP with a much larger tech tree. In stock it feels quite overpowered, but personally, playing with a few mods, one of which being Interstellar Extended, it felt a bit more balanced because even with the science lab, i was only able to unlock ~3 tech nodes per Jool mission. (Though I did prohibit myself from biome-hopping)
Hey really nice video and challenge ! I took the same one some months ago on my (french) yt channel in science mode. A pretty cool one. I just didn't think about flying the damn lab, so i took the 90% penalty on the process of science .... Really clever to fly the lab btw.
A wheesley-powerred plane can get above 20k weasily. you can also decline contracts to cycle thorough unwanted ones. Edit: I see that you have lot's of external stuff on planes - try to put as much as possible into service bay and don't use parts you don't need. Also try to stick to circular intakes(small and large). 3 wheesly engines would be enough for a 12t craft to get to 20k altitude in a proper climb.
