I love Jordan Peterson. He says the things I think constantly. That part where he discusses dealing with an alcoholic brother was a play by play of my life. My brother was a dangerous drug abuser through his teens. I could list the hundred stories. It was all a downward spiral, tearing my family apart. We tried everything too. Eventually, we all had enough. Atleast I did. I was leaving for college in about two weeks and he had what alcoholics call a "moment of clarity". We spent that day painting a canoe and I straight up told him that I wasn't going to let him drag me down anymore. I figured once I left he would either go to prison or die. He checked himself into rehab later that month. Going on 5 years sober now, god bless.
It may have been Jocko who said it, I love him too. This conversation was awesome and way too short.

Obviously I found this video a tad late and am just learning about these men. When Mr. Peterson said "be the most reliable person at your fathers funeral" that hit me hard as hell. My father passed this last year and it is true everyone was a blubbering mess and I felt it was my job to make sure things went smoothly. I grieved in silence in my own time, and it really meant a lot to hear someone respect that moment in my life.
I’ve always had the same role. I’ve always been the one others have leaned on, when they couldn’t stand alone. Maybe that’s why I am who I am, where I am, and when I am.
One little bit of advice. Find a time and place to let your own grief out. If you don’t, it’s coming anyway. But, it’ll come at a time and place of its own. Most times it’ll be inconvenient as hell.

I think it's important to also point out that each of us leaned on someone else at many moments throughout our lives.
From conception, through childhood, adulthood and if you become old and grey. Even castaways use what other human beings have taught and left behind to keep living.
None of us exist without someone else, or else we wouldn't have been born.
Human beings are meant to receive love and to share love.
If not cared for humans would never be able to make it to an age where they could stand.
For instance, babies who are killed before birth do not ever get to stand on earth like we do.
No love. No life.
At one point we cried uncontrollably and slobbered on ourselves, unable to even clean our own rear ends.
People like to forget that and it instills arrogance.
Each of us are as delicate as snow flakes. One or two degrees and it's all gone.
God upholds everything that lives, even the wicked.
The wicked do not inwardly acknowledge these things, that's how they can bring so much harm without an inch of self restraint or second thought.
They don't believe in a higher authority and they do not believe the things they even say they believe.
They don't believe they will be accountable.
God has comforted me through plenty of pain and death. When I say comfort, in my situation I became well aware that God keeps us alive even when our hearts want to stop beating.
Gods comfort keeps us alive when even our bodies should have failed.
Grief has physical properties because it happens beyond the quantum level in the "Spirit".
Information never actually "breaks down".
The body may turn to dust, but the information never actually dissappears.
Human bodies are mortal, but the spirit of a person isn't destroyed. Like everything else it just experiences a "phase change". Boiling water doesn't dissappear, it changes and it moves.
Consciousness is the same way.
Spirits are immortal.
Destruction in the spirit is "eternal hell" but preservation in the spiritual realm is eternal life or "heaven".
Death is something everyone has in common, but people don't confront it until it spits in their face.
God taught me that goodbye isn't forever as far as death goes.
Having the knowledge that there is a God and that there is more to the universe was essential to my personal survival.
Wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him.
Not that I am special, but I am blessed to have been made aware of it.
Jesus was our example of how to face death. He beat it.
He was proof that death is a force that is subject to God. Death doesn't reign.
Death is not the final say. Nor is it a true authority.
We thought gravity was in authority, birds knew long before rockets that this was not true.
I suppose it's good to hang your head and sit in the dark sometimes.
We gain knowledge and perseverance by it.
But always take your inner light with you if you have one. If one doesn't have the light of truth in them, that's all they'll see in those moments is darkness.

45:00 when I was about 9 years old, my nearly 80-year-old great uncle once caught me looking at the down cards in a solitaire game.

Anyone else notice how quickly Jocko adopts the speech patterns of whoever he’s talking to? The speed, the word choice, the individual habits of people. He never interrupts anyone unless the person talking to him does the same. That is good communication. That’s part of what makes him successful!

This is the best Jordan Peterson video I've ever seen. This is a true and concise distillation of the essence of his beliefs. Not only that, but Jocko's questions are thoughtful and provocative in just the right ways, and yet he knows exactly when to back out and let Jordan say what he needs to say without interruption. THIS is a world-class interview, in my opinion.

His story about waiting for a comrade comming home reminds me of 2003. I was at home because I broke my hand in an accident short before deployment. Took training a bit to serious. I was sitting in my living room watching TV. The barbacue was heating up. I went inside because it was fucking hot outside. My splinting was annoying me hard. I had a beer in my healthy hand. Then it comes on TV. A convoy was hit by an IED. 4 dead, 23 injured. I knew from the size of the unit given in the news within a second: This was my batallion.
Back than I wasn't very experienced. Saw some small scale action later. But I never came in a situation again in my life that I hated more than this. Sitting on your ass, with a beer half around the world while your friends are lying in their own blood. Only thing that came close to it was seeing my grandma (which I really loved) suffering from dementia more and more over the years and not beeing able to do shit about it.
This feeling of beeing unable to take action when the stakes are that high is the worst shit ever.

Jordan Peterson is at an interesting point right now... he has this extended metaphor he uses to describe outstanding performance... he talks about the figure skater who's about to compete, and the skater's opponent goes out and just crushes it right before the skater is up... and he asks, what do you do if you're the skater at this point... and he says that all the skater can do is go out and skate on the absolute threshold of chaos, pushing himself to the brink of totally falling apart... that's brilliance, that's breaking what was previously understood as the limit... and he says we know this when we see it because we get chills watching stuff like this, watching someone operating at their absolute maximum, just a slip away from chaos.
And I think that's where Jordan Peterson is right now and he knows it... he's attained this unexpected, rather unprecedented level of notoriety just by speaking his truth as he has come to understand it after decades of thinking about the human state. I've heard him say in a number of recent interviews that he worries about saying something offensive, something that will bring it all to an end... just the way the figure skater is a mere slip up away from collapsing. I actually believe Peterson thinks something like this is bound to happen... and I bet anyone thrust into the limelight would feel the same way. Peterson is doing everything he possibly can and he's reaching new heights in the process... but he believes himself to be in the place of the figure skater.
And I think as a result of that he wants to shout his message as succinctly and loudly as possible to all who will listen while he has the forum... I think that's why he approached this podcast with the aim of hammering home the book again and again. He knows Jocko's podcast is a forum where he's not going to get questions about the alt-right, etc., so he used the podcast to get his core points out there uninterrupted as best he could.
I support him in what I believe he's trying to do. But I believe he should be careful to not oversimplify as he strives to reach a mass audience while he has this moment. Jordan Peterson's brilliance does not reduce to "clean your room," as significant as that refrain is to his message.

I agree with what you're saying here, and 2 years later it's still the same thing. I think that he was pushed into the limelight because the world around him needs this voice, a voice of clarity and truth with no propaganda, but hey his propaganda might be just that, also to show people, to tell people that you can practice becoming the best version of yourself despite the underlying "chaos and malevolence"-J.P, that others have played a role in causing. It seems like it's only now that people like Jordan Peterson, David Goggins, Jocko Willink, Ben Shapiro and for some including me Joe Rogan are successfully putting their word out there, a time where people know they need to hear unrelenting truth, yet some have trouble knowing that's what they're feeling. One by one, people are saying "fuck it, I'm gonna 'Get after it' and get my head screwed on straight. These men that i listed are the men that would've stayed silent, only if the world around them sufficed, and trying hard (and succeeding) to get people to wake their ass up.
With how things are in society with emotional wrecks putting on a proud face to share their feelings, Jordan points out that even though these feelings are destructive not just to the individual but onlookers as well, they are also warranted and still hold value, for me what i think about the radical movements like the feminazis we all see is that, they demonstrate that they can have immense passion for something they believe in and these people are just one step away from learning to get a grip on reality.

Having listened to 12 Rules for Life, read by Peterson himself, and this is no disrespect to Jocko, I have to disagree. Hearing the emotion in his voice, there was no doubt in my mind that what he wrote was honest and from the heart. Nothing like the manufactured self-help bullshit you find everywhere else. There were moments where it sounded like if you could see him reading it, there might be tears running down his cheeks. It was humbling.

I immensely enjoy when Dr. Peterson is discussing his one client that was trying to improve his salary by x3. As someone who is a educated public health professional, I had to apply for 185 jobs (with years of experience in the field), and I interviewed at only 6 organizations. I obtained one offer out of 185 jobs. It only takes one. Move forward :)

Just finished the book couple hours ago, been sitting here with my flawed self after reading such a powerful book, asking myself questions and getting answers I don't like or want to hear let alone now dealing with. Peterson has definitely helped me steer my direction in life towards heaven (metaphorically). Its so fucking brutal being honest with yourself and sifting through all the bullshit you surrounded and comforted yourself in for what now seems too long.

12 Rules For Life is the most influential books I've ever read. JBP and Jocko are both responsible for me being the person I am today, the strongest, happiest and most sophisticated I've ever been.
Part of it might be that I'm getting older and life is becoming easier, but I feel like because of those guys, it became a lot easier to focus and formulate plans, in order to make life so much better.
Strength of body meets strength of mind, sharing strength of character. Great talk.

Jocko and Jordan are so good together. They must realize that their world views are fundamentally the same. Jocko encourages change at the operational/tactical level and gives tools to help. Peterson provides assistance at the strategic/psychological/metaphysical level. Listen to these guys, incorporate their ideas, and watch the improvement in your life. These are basic, uncomplicated ideas that can help anyone.
I wish I could tell a story like Jocko, but I thank God and people like Jocko that I don’t have his stories to tell.
