Laurel & Hardy: Music Box Steps Filming Location

- Perhaps the most legendary of all L&H locations, the stairs from "The Music Box" can still be found in good shape on Vendôme Street, just south of Sunset Blvd. There is even a plaque commemorating the Oscar-winning movie from 1932.
We visited the steps about 3-4 years ago. Walked up and down the steps, remembering the wonderful film and 2 of my favorite comic actors from my childhood. Sadly, the plaque had been vandalized, but still legible. It was a nice morning outing. There's even a small park across the street where we had a little picnic. Highly recommended for serious Laurel and Hardy fans.
My good friend Chuck McCann was the driving force that got the plaque installed. Stan Laurel was his mentor!

Excellent to see these steps.
Once a year in October there is a Laurel and Hardy festival across the street from the base of the steps in a little park called Laurel and Hardy Park.
Actually(I double checked this) the Stooges filmed two miles northeast of here. It is listed in the 98th Stooges journal and the official filmography(I don't have a reason to doubt that). I must say that look almost like them though and I did question wether or not they were. The most important item to note is these stairs begin with a cul-de-sac. Yet, the use of this location strongly suggests the influence Hal Roach must have had on the Moe, Larry, & Curly.
@brianwells, Your are 100% correct. I watched Isn't life Terrible at the same staircase is used. Back then, no house existed on either side on this staircase. Very interesting !! Thank you.

I walked those same steps. Was like going back in time.
This area is certainly not "run down" as some have said. Its a suburb of LA called Loz Feliz. Its quite a shabby chic and quiet neighborhood.

I used to enjoy spotting places where The Three Stooges lived and worked in Brooklyn, New York. Some of the places are still there!
1:17 it looks far nicer there in 1932 than it does now

This is really brillant finding out the excact film locations of the Laurel and Hardy films. A lot of film companys would not do this at all.
That book in question was published in 1982 or '83, and it was written by a former LAPD detective-turned-private detective, who was approached by L&H fans about where certain L&H film locations where. You can find it in used book shops, if you're lucky in finding it, that is. =)

Thanks for posting this. I had assumed the location was bulldozed over decades ago to build a strip mall or something. Funny how a lot of these locations (especially the Little Rascals ones) had a "out in the sticks" look to them when filmed, but the locations today are in a downtown area.

Theres a book i wish i`d gotten back in the 90`s showing the filming locations for the L&H movies. They would show a still shot from one of their films on one page and a "now" shot of the area on the opposite page. Very interesting book.

It's in the "Silverlake" district in Los Angeles, it SUCKS, now.....
I believe the house where James Finlayson lived in the L&H short where they are Christmas tree salesmen is still standing.
If you click on ''Isn`t Life Terrible" here on RUclips,you can see these same steps at 6:14 and then you can see an 18 year old Fay Wray at 7:09.This 1925 Hal Roach movie,starring Charley Chase,also features Babe Hardy(sans mustache).

Anyone know if these are the same steps that The Three Stooges carried ice up in the episode where they're delivering ice? I always wondered if they were filmed at the same place.
It IS an interesting book - although perhaps journal would be a better word. It's called PRATFALL presents Laurel & Hardywood vol. 2 Numbers 6,7,8 & 9 (18,19,20 & 21). Inside it says "published by the Way Out West Tent of Sons of the Desert. PO Box 8341P, Universal City, CA 91608. @ Lori S. Jones" - Hope this helps.

There's a Ray Bradbury story set on those steps, called "Another Fine Mess."

not only laurel & hardy but keystone cops and the 3stooges and of course Charles chaplain were all filmed in the Echo Park area.
