God, I loved living in LA - for 30 years. I moved because so many of my closest friends either moved or died and my neighborhood was beginning to be a sad place for me, and plus traffic became unbearable, my neighborhood ion Hollywood got crazy crowded with giant new buildings and no space around them, and it just got so expensive. So, I bought a house in an adjacent state and pay less mortgage than I paid rent in my small Hollywood apartment. Speaking of Nobody' Walks in LA... a song sung by Dale Bozzio (Missing Persons)- She was standing in front of me in line to pay for groceries at "Rock N Roll Ralph's" at Sunset & Poinsettia Place (my street) in the late 80's or early 90's.
being born and raised in Los Angeles, I have encountered many different hidden stairscases like these in Lincoln Heights, Highland Park, Montecito Heights, El Sereno, City Terrace, Mt.Washington, Mt. Hermon, Eagle Rock, Glassell Park, Atwater Etc. There are so many of them in Los Angeles and L.A.County. My parent's house is near one of these old staircases. We use to have to climb up and down them to get to and from school.
I used to live in Echo Park and was a member of the Historical Society there. As I recall, city planning followed a grid pattern in the 1880s, when EP's streets were laid out. Due to the steep angle of the hills, staircases were used where roads could not run. I climbed several of the ones still around, living a block from the Kite Hill stairs. In contrast, Silverlake was laid out in the 1890s when the grid pattern gave way to following the contours of the geography. That is why EP has straight, steep roads while Silverlake has roads that wind their way around and why stairs are more numerous in EP than in S-lake.
very interesting revelation. Edendale was what I think atleast the Echo Park main area was referred to as back then, and maybe even included some of what's Silverlake today.
I have live in Echo Park , Anglino heights, La vetta terrace all my life I remember renting paddle boots in Echo park. I've explored the tunnels under Los Angeles the stairs there are some many hidden secret in La. I love living here. could not ever think of living any where else.
I went to the tunnels under the LA City buildings downtown. I would love to explore the tunnels you found under LA stairs. Want to swap location info? I have gone to many off-beaten path places, go to my channels "Mike Khuu", let me know if you any of those location information.
The Three Stooges Went On these Stairs in AN ACHE IN EVERY STAKE in 1941. 9 Years After Laurel and Hardy Went On These Stairs in THE MUSIC BOX in 1932.
These staircases are nice. When I lived in Echo Park, I used to go up the Clinton Street Stairway off Glendale Blvd, the Grafton/ Lucretia Stairs off Echo Park and Delta St, and Alvarado/Ewing Stairs off Lake Shore and Ewing St. Does anyone know those stairwells?
My first home was in Echo Park, corner Robinson and Ellesmere. On the latter street across from our quadplex was the only russian orthodox church in L.A. at the time.. When Rimsky-Korsokoff died he was there until his remains were shipped to NYC. I was an infant so couldn't pay my respects.
There is a cool staircase in W. LA by my old place in Palms. Close to the 10 freeway and Overland. If you are at the intersection of Overland and Woodbine, head West 4 blocks or so. Then, go North about 4 or 5 blocks until you run into the hill. Steps are in that area, taking you up into the more expensive neighborhood above. I used to wake up from weed naps and walk up the stairs and the above neighborhood in a haze to sober up.. Ahhhhh, memories. ✌❤🌴
The Baxter street stairs in Echo Park are a great compliment to the historic streets' record steep inclines and declines. Great workout walking up the stairs and/or street.
may be beautiful but not for the weak or dissabled...at night may be a little vulnerable for anybody and a dreamworld for muggers....plenty of places to escape and hide,,,
I am appalled at how the newer land barons (Owners) don’t take care in keeping the old city planning. Destroyed are Streetcar right of ways and other transportation via’s. Causing traffic jams and tie-ups. Railroads for freight were dismantled. Allowing trucks to take-over delivery services are becoming slower, unreliable, more expensive than railroads. Private manufacturers have sold their properties due to city taxes and excise tax charges. Making it harder for these businesses to continue. Politics became more prevalent to control some aspects of privatized small Community based and supportive businesses. (Usually the price of rent, local taxes, utilities) Small businesses are an important part of the community. They employ people and donate to local causes. A lot of cities seem to weed out small local manufacturing businesses. Because of their lack of interest in keeping them viable. More interests in dealings with China. A subject too immense to comment. Focuses now is on the housing market. It is commonplace to see cubical shops at street level and residences above. Affordable housing to become unaffordable. Driving renter’s to pay outlandish amounts. (Higher than most people’s jobs pay their employees) What happened to Los Angeles?
This is what I call my sacred place, cause I come out here when I feel like being by myself. I used to come here with Karen Cross, she's kinda like my girlfriend, or used to be. We used to come out here and hold hands and talk and read books to each other with a flashlight. She don't wanna have nothing to do with me in front of people cause I don't have any money.
How about for the 10th anniversary of this upload, Alexa does a review from the holy grail of all LA's hidden staircases of all time known as Cardiac Hill at Cal State LA. I counted it, and it's 135 steps.
Hills... she says. More like mountains, but take a trek to cities like Chattanooga, Pittsburgh and other locations built alongside high-terrain, and you'll find stairs, or switchback roads that allow a rigorous workout and seclusion.
We mexicans walk since the aztec empire when California was México.I walked the streets of L.A. myself and used public transportstion to get from downtown to north hollywood all the time.walking for me is getting the excercise that sometimes i don't have time to do because busy in work and college.yes i sweat in my clean clothes alot but at least i get my dose of exercise and i can hit 2 or 3 birds with one shot.Get my work done, college and excercise.nothing new, that's how we mexicans hit the streets if you don't have a personal car at the moment.
Really?!? 10-minutes covering the Little Known Hidden Staircases of Los Angeles, but upon viewing the video one doesn't gain any further knowledge (on the topic) that isn't already stated in the title, i.e., there are Little Known Hidden Staircases in Los Angeles; Good-luck finding them.
I need to tell the homeless people about these hidden things if they don't know about them yet. There are some spectacular spots to pitch a tent in this video.
Gawd, what an annoying reporter. I like how she asks, "why were the staircases built in the first place?" (Seriously??) Sanchez was probably thinking, "well, Einstein, it's usually like this: people build staircases so they can go up and down the a hill..."
@maitrejim Yes the piano crate scooted & bumped down the many flights of steps dragging poor Oliver Hardy all the way to the bottom. One of the funniest comedy bits in history!
That was a contradiction That girls house without a drive way said she had privacy and then she said she agreed that she has people peaking through her gate door

Not the best video to show intelligent life in LA. Listen, these staircases and secret gardens are all over San Francisco. All for a very good reason. Boring vid. sorry.

That's a song that goes through my mind every time I drive through that town :-) Thank you for the memories!

I have the funniest/fondest childhood memories of renting paddle boats in Echo Park! LOLOLOLOLOL! Thanks for the memories!

The narrator names the Kite Hills stairs as the Baxter Stairs at 8:30 - I forgot about the name for them.
very interesting revelation. Edendale was what I think atleast the Echo Park main area was referred to as back then, and maybe even included some of what's Silverlake today.
I did them all and shortcuts thru private yards as UPS driver then.. great therapy
Great piece.... I've done the Music Box steps many times, great workout!
Walking those trails and staircases was a daily task for me. 1970s
Very good. Interesting. What a way to stay in shape. Walk, ladies?
Great video Alexa. Very interesting to see those stairways. Brings back memory's of Laurel and Hardy.
My girlfriends & I used to walk those stairs all of the time when we lived in Silver Lake, especially walking home!

Ya the car which made Southern California what it is
I find the narrow, windy and practically hidden staircases of the Hollywood Hills much more interesting.
I love the hills Echo Park, it's one of the few neighborhoods that's fun to walk around.
Except at night.
“And she’s buying the stairway to HEAVEN “

may be beautiful but not for the weak or dissabled...at night may be a little vulnerable for anybody and a dreamworld for muggers....plenty of places to escape and hide,,,
The Little Rascals episode’s were also filmed there.

People lived closer to the things they needed. Cars didn’t ruin that people did
How many hidden staircases actually exist?
I'm only 11 years late to the party but, is there a map?
When I saw "staircases" I thought it referred to interior stairs. Strange to use the term to refer to an outdoor flight of stairs.
Let the,search begin! :D,
Damn this was nice....
My friend Stanley found the devils hole in Echo Park.
the lyric is "only A NOBODY walks in L.A." not "nobody walks in L.A."
it means only poor people walked in L.A.
Who sang it?
