    Thank you so much for this video. I have made several mixes over the last 5 months and had troubles with them all. One batch even burned the underarms and the skin peeled! Now I see what was wrong. It is the baking soda. Whew I am so happy to find out why I was having all these troubles. You are so smart for doing all that research. I am greatful to have benifitted from your knowledge. Great video. :)

  • @squeakieism
    @squeakieism 10 лет назад +1

    Wow, your video is amazing. Nice to see that someone actually pays attention to checking PH levels on projects they are doing. SUPER JOB!!!! Quick note.....you can also use Essential Oils such as Rosewood or Litsea which have natural deodorizing properties in them (they are the ones I use in almost the same recipe). Also, you can get aluminum free baking soda from Bob's Red Mill at most health food stores (it's the aluminum in over the counter deodorants that cause most people problems). Thank you for posting your videos, they're great and very informative.

    • @duchessgabrielle
      @duchessgabrielle  10 лет назад +3

      Your insight is superb. I have not heard of Litsea but I will definitely look it up. I can't imagine any baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) having aluminum in it because it's intended for ingestion. At high levels aluminum (metal) interferes with neuron transmission in the brain resulting in brain disorders and not to mention known toxicity to the lungs, kidneys and red blood cells.
      One of the ways we are exposed to higher levels of aluminum is via the deodorants. Have you seen a baking soda brand with aluminum in it? That would be grounds for a massive class action suit.

    Thank you, soooooo much! Thank you for caring about my skin & acidity/ph levels! I've tried several baking soda deodorant recipes and they've all burned my underarm, to the point where I developed a cyst-like bump, and the protection lasted but the odor it left wasn't pleasant but at least it wasn't body odor. Your recipe is AWESOME! I didn't use Neem or ilipe because I didn't have it. Although mine didn't hold the shape due to a little melt, I don't mind using my fingers because I can also check for lumps or unusual underarm growth. Not only does it smell good enough to eat, I also tested and it will last for two days without reapplying. No more burning, either. Just as gentle as a lamb! I'm going to recommend the blogger Jillee have your video added to her blog. I tell everyone, now, about you! May God continue to bless you. You could have kept this to yourself but you didn't. Altovise Wright Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe cutting the baking soda in half again? You probably have very sensitive skin. I'm changed to an aluminium free baking soda, I like it much better now.

    • @jbudney2000
      @jbudney2000 9 лет назад +1

      Altovise Wright You can leave the baking soda out completely. Baking soda is in a lot of natural deodorant recipes but there are ones without it. It has an abrasive quality (which is why people can brush their teeth with baking soda) and I suspect that might add to the irritation. I use a very similar recipe to this video but I did add some natural beeswax into the oils and bentonite clay instead of baking soda. The wax helps the bar to stay hard in the cupboard and doesn't make it too hard to put into a tube (I used recycle deodorant tubes and they all work perfectly well). Hope it works for you. Thank you for the video Duchess.

    As always...thanks for sharing this....Have you considered recipes using bentonite clay? If so what made you not include it? Also...can you share the approx volume of oil you used ( either solid or melted). I know you said a 2:1 ratio but I was curious as to the amounts....Thanks as always for sharing your wisdom with us.

    • @duchessgabrielle
      @duchessgabrielle  10 лет назад +5

      That's a great question. I don't know much about bentonite clay as a deodorizer so I chose not to use it. Sweat is a combination of protein residue along with sodium, calcium, potassium, urea and ammonia. Sweat alone has no scent but once on the skin's surface it reacts with bacteria resulting in body odor. My goal is not to eliminate sweat (I would be very wary of any product that does because sweating is the body's temperature regulatory and detox system,) but inhibit (by causing a different reaction) the reaction that follows (this causes some moisture loss as well). I'm not sure what bentonite clay would bring to the table except it's ability to absorb moisture.It's not strong enough to prevent sweat from reacting with bacteria. It can absorb some of the resulting salt residue but I can't find any other logic around it.
      If you look closely, the scale shows how much of each oil I used - 1.8 ounces of coconut vs. 1 ounce of ilipe. I didn't check the amount once melted but that shouldn't matter too much. Hope this helps :-)

    • @kcbombay1179
      @kcbombay1179 10 лет назад

      So 1.8 ounces, approximately 2 ounces = 4 tablespoon

    • @duchessgabrielle
      @duchessgabrielle  10 лет назад +1

      KC Bombay You are moving from weight to volume. The measurement won't be accurate. Also, the butters are measured in solid form by volume. The weight of each butter when liquid will be different. ounces=weight/volume but 4 tablespoon is a unit of volume.

    Have you thought of adding a clay along with the starches? And i've heard alot i f people adding beeswax to help antibacterial and keep solid in the heat, what do you think? I really love your videos, you really know how to do everything! Thanks for sharing your recipes.

      @duchessgabrielle  10 лет назад

      heidigib01 I have heard about the clays but I can find no justification for it. I'll look into it. I can see how beeswax would be very helpful especially if the butter used is only coconut. I think that if you use one of the hard butters like cocoa it will serve the same purpose. Thanks so much for the feedback.

    I love this, thank you for the explanation about the alkalinity and the acidity bit. I've been wrestling with these recipes for a bit. I did the half and half at first and then decided the baking soda was a bit much so I took it down a notch. Now that I see this it makes me feel a bit better that I didn't mess it up. I just wish that now I could find a glass container for my deodorant stick!! I've been having to spread mine on with my hand, bit messy but it does the trick lol. I've been having trouble with mine clumping too, any thoughts or suggestions for my next batch? I thought about using less powder and more of the coconut oil instead?

    • @duchessgabrielle
      @duchessgabrielle  10 лет назад +1

      I bought a glass jar in a container store but changed my mind because I felt the mix was too exposed each time I opened the jar and repeatedly dipping my fingers was a gateway for introducing all sorts of other elements. I switched to an old deodorant tub and couldn't be happier. I think you are right as far as clumping. Too little oil would leave parts of the powder without lubrication which would result in clumping so it makes sense. Yep, I would add a little bit more oil at a time and test it. This way you don't to go far and make it overly oily.

    Hello Gabrielle,
    First of all, I would like to that you for your great video. I loved it !!! :) I will definitely try it.
    Could you please tell me the name of the product you use to harden the deodorant? I know that one of the 2 is coconut oil but I don’t know the other one.
    Thank you in advance.
    Silvie

      @duchessgabrielle  10 лет назад

      Thanks Silvie for watching and a wonderful comment :-) The other ingredient is Illipe. It's a harder butter that won't melt as easily especially in the summer hear. You can substitute it with Cocoa butter, they are very similar.

      she said the container was recycled and absolutely do NOT substitute the starch w/baking soda, baking soda is way to alkaline to be used in that preportion.

    why do you want the baking soda to react? Wouldn't that change the property of baking soda making not work as an odour reducer?

  • @lublubjubran3682
    @lublubjubran3682 7 лет назад

    @duchessgabrielle thank you for such a through video. I really like that you explained the PH of baking soda. so a couple of things... I added 2tbs instead of one, just because I wanted to ensure the odor blocking. so far so good with no irritation. :) instead of elepe I used cocoa butter and instead I of neem I used bentonite clay... all in the same measurements. so I have 2 questions.. 1. I reused old cleaned deodorant containers and keep them in the fridge, I seem to have no luck with pushing up the deodorant... in both containers that I used. it's like the deodorant is too solid... any suggestions? because I can't keep it out because the temp in my house is 77 which melts the coconut oil. 2. I used organic coconut oil, which smells great, but the E.O. mixture didn't mask the smell, so I walk around all day smelling like I been cooking with coconut oil. do you think adding a lot more E.O. will change the smell, or is the oil just too pungent to be covered. Thanks for your input!!!

    I would love to make this however id like to know if it feels "sticky"?
    The one thing I haste about gel-type deodorants is that they are always making my arm pits stick to the rest of my body so I avoid them.
    Have always used a "deodorant/anti perspirant so within a few seconds of applying it, it sort of dries & I don't get that tacky or stickiness.
    That's what I want from a deodorant.
    How does this feel once it's been on for a few minutes?
    Thank you for all the great information Duchess Gabrielle.

    Did you ever test the pH of the finished product? I'm curious as to how close it is to the natural pH of the skin. I have a similar recipe that I have tweaked to have more oil and starch than baking soda as it was irritating to my skin.

      +Luca Chami I have never had one go bad on me but usually I'll just toss it out if it's not used up in two months. As long as there is no water, it could last at least two years before the butters go rancid

    never heard of illipe butter! seems similar to cocoa butter or shea butter right? also how did this deodorant work for you?

    • @duchessgabrielle
      @duchessgabrielle  9 лет назад +1

      altertheskyy1 I didn't know about Ilipe either until I started looking into natural fats. The deodorant is perfect. I made another batch using baking soda that does not contain aluminum. It does not stop me from sweating (that's a critical cooling and toxin removal mechanism that I don't want to interfere with). It's primary job is to deodorize sweat. And for that it's perfect.

  • @naturallylockednlovely654
    @naturallylockednlovely654 10 лет назад

    Good day, can you tell me if this recipe really works? I currently use an all natural body deodorant spray, which looks like water, called African Pure and Natural and it works very well. I also use TAWAS powder from the Philippines which also works very very well. Usually in the summer months I will use both forms of deodorants together. The TAWAS is a bit abrasive so you only need very little like a dab. I have tried in the past making my own batch of deodorant, it didn't last long under the arm.

    • @duchessgabrielle
      @duchessgabrielle  10 лет назад

      I am not sure what you mean by works. If you mean does it stop me from sweating the answer is no. This is a deodorant that meant to prevent body odor (even though it will eliminate a little moisture) so it will not interfere with the sweating process. Only an antiperspirant can literally stop the halt the body's natural cooling mechanism of sweat. From the description I figure you are thinking more of an antiperspirant rather than deodorant. The product here meant to work with the body, not against it. I hope that makes sense.

    • @naturallylockednlovely654

      Hello and thanks for your response. I was referring to the ability of your deodorant to eliminate odor. I apologize for the confusion.
