My recruiter said that position is not available at the moment. Should I just be placed on a waiting list? Because it’s either 11b or nothing to be honest I won’t be happy doing anything else. • @taemien9219
    @taemien9219 3 года назад +1

    Are you treated different in Basic at a higher rank? Yes, for about twenty minutes. If you're a PFC (E3) or SPC (E4) you will likely be placed in a squad leader or platoon guide role. Reason I say for about twenty minutes is you will have such responsibility removed the first time you screw up.
    These positions rotate around during red phase (first 3 weeks) before settling down on a few people. In which case the rank doesn't matter. Its unlikely but not impossible to see one of the first chosen to remain. Had this happen in our platoon in Basic back in 2006. Our specialist was squad lead on the first day, and remained squad leader all the way to graduation. He was also the soldier of the cycle. Just generally pretty squared away.
    In AIT it was kinda the same thing. PFCs and SPCs were generally fireteam and squad leads. These positions were semi-permanent. Usually lasting till they got an Article 15 (in which case they lost rank) or graduated, or in some cases changed shifts. But this was in the 15th Signal Brigade at Ft Gordon, so other AIT's might be different. Also these positions went to Phase 5/5+, so cable dogs almost never got it, and only 25 S/N/Q/B and other longer school'd MOS's.
    When I did the final field exercise, I was squad lead as a PFC, I actually was in charge of Both MOS-I (guys learning their first MOS) and MOS-T (not initial trainees, reclassers) Specialists and Sergeants. I actually had two NCO's I was in charge of as a private. Uncommon, but not unheard of. They didn't mind me getting the experience. Since my entire squad was all 25S's, I had us do QRF every night. Made the Drill Sergeants think we were hardcore, but in reality, we were getting our sleep during validation. Instead of taking tests, our instructors at Vincent Hall passed us and told us to go to sleep during the days we were there for testing. So we slept all day, and beat the tar out of Op-For at night (who were tired from testing all day). It was a ton of fun. And that is why Satcom is the best MOS, accept no subsitute.

    I’m shipping Oct 21st to ft Benning as a cavalry scout. I not only worry about basic itself, but the stationary life of a cav scout in general and what that’s gonna be like. I also hear it can be a dangerous job, so with my ship date being fairly soon, I’m rather nervous. I just completed meps yesterday. I should also mention they extended OSUT another 8 weeks for cav scout and an extra 10 for infantry. So 22 weeks of training for Cav scouts and 24 for infantry.

    Korea has units on Rotation now of about 6 months. And Units deploy there for training exercises and Show of Force missions. And then there are those stationed there for an OCONUS Duty Station. Most of those wait Mid-Tour to take leave because: Even with MAC Flights, it's still an expensive trip back to the State's, and even if you don't take a MAC Flight (Military Air), and take Commercial, it's still going to take a minimum of 2.5 days of travel time one way, unless you're from PR, The Caribbean, Hawaii, or the West Coast. Because the Flights are lonnnnng!!!

    NO, you will be treated as a private. Having rank in BCT doesn't mean you are special. Sometime you will be chosen to be in a leadership position in BCT or someone with a lower rank will be in charge of you. No matter what, you all are trainee. For those that are enlisting with ranks, don't be that guy/girl that think they know everything or try to pull ranks on the lower guys in BCT. I promise you, you will not enjoy BCT at all. I enlisted as an E-4 (4 year degree) three years ago and currently an E-5.

    We had a guy who was an E-5 in the Navy come into basic as an E-4. I don't remember if he had college or not. Not that it mattered. He left as an E-1 for going AWOL.
    We also had a couple people come in as E-3 because they finished college and they were going to OCS. After basic their orders said they were promoted to E-5, not just receive E-5 pay. They reported to OCS as Sergeants and wearing Sergeant rank. Of course they instantly went from Sergeant to Officer Candidate so it didn't make much difference but for a brief time they were NCOs.
    As for the guy in Korea you probably misinterpreted him. I don't think you can be stationed there for less than a year. He was probably asking if you can take leave if you've been in country at least 4 months. The answer is yes, you can take a mid-tour leave of up to 2 weeks between your 4th and 8th month provided you have enough leave saved up - although some commanders will let you take leave you haven't earned yet if you will be in the Army long enough to earn it eventually. You can take leave in-country, and some soldiers did this if they had family in country or if they wanted the time off to study for a promotion board or something, but the most common option was to go stateside at their expense or take leave when their tour was up.

If you’re an E-4 due to prior service than yes, you will probably be treated different, not that you won’t get smoked with the rest of the platoon but more like the cadre will treat you with more respect. • @mikevanroy9356
      @mikevanroy9356 3 года назад +1

      Rule of thumb is with some college (at least a year) you go in as E-2 but if you have a 4-year degree you go as an E-3. You can also take 4 semesters of JROTC in high school and go as E-2 or 6 semesters and go as E-3. Prior service can also get you E-2 to E-4 depending on what your previous rank was and how long you have been out.

      @@mikevanroy9356 " but if you have a 4-year degree you go as an E-3." That's Air Force. A four year degree gets you an E4 in the Army. One of the very few things the Army has better over the Air Force, though not really saying much. An associates degree gets you an E3 in the Army, which was my experience.

    • @golfery5119
      @golfery5119 2 года назад

      @@SourStrawberrys don't know. Maybe (and I'm just guessing) that the army probably has a lower rate of enlistees with college than Air Force does, so maybe the army wanted to give people enlisting with four year degrees an extra incentive.
      Of course if you have a four year degree and you want to join the army it might be a better idea to either come in as an officer if possible or make sure you pick a mos that has less nonsense in it (and arguably closer to the air force) than others. A decent example is quite a few medical (not combat medic) mos.
      Especially given the fact that even if you enlist as an E4 you will still have to wait quite some time, maybe around 3 years or so, before you can be looked at for promotion to sergeant e5.
      Certain mos and units (which you have no control over but in part depended on your mos) will most likely consider an E4 specialist as not much better than an e1-e3 Private.
      That means you'd still be treated like a little kid plus have to deal with even more nonsense, like complete bullshit pt, fucking around the motor pool, scrubbing out toilets and just sitting around bored out of your scull waiting for dismissal (it's even more boring than I'm describing). Infantry kids may also be put to labor like mowing lawns.
      And still were not looking at the fact that if you are unmarried and trying to enlist, someone in the air force is allowed to move out of the barracks when they reach the rank of E4, whereas someone in the army is not allowed to move out of the barracks until they reach the rank of E6 (even enlisting as an E4 in the army, you'd still have to wait probably 7 or 8 years to get to e6 just like an E1 private in army would have to wait. Somebody enlisting in air force as e3 would have to wait at max maybe two years before they reach E4 and are allowed to move out).
      Not to say air force doesn't have any of this, but arguably less of it than army does.
      So if you had a bachelor's degree and you were enlisting you'd probably be more likely to want to join air force instead of army (air force overall is more booksmart than physical labor like army is), so that's probably why army has the E4 thing as an incentive.

    • @SourStrawberrys
      @SourStrawberrys 2 года назад

      @@golfery5119 People always suggest people with degree go in as an officer, but realistically the chances are slim to none right now due to retention rate. The last 3 boards got canceled for all branches. The only one that was still open was space force so applied to that after they canceled air force one. Then when we got the result turns out they only chose 9 people total and 5 of them were already enlisted. Meaning they only chose 4 civilians out of the thousands that applied. I have a feeling the next boards in Dec will also be canceled as I don't see the retention rate and job availability changing. So I'm just going to see if I can enlist as an e3. I already wasted time. I should have just enlisted a year ago when I tried going officer route. I had a feeling the retention rate was going to be high in 2020 due to job market anyways.
