My recruiter took my ASVAB results and just showed me my options and the pros and cons of each
Yea... better than what I got. ''You qualified for these two jobs... here, look them over.'' Twenty minutes later, ''Why are you taking so long to decide???'' Turns out, I could definitely have gone the Intelligence route, but nope, just offered me two jobs that needed to be filled.

Oh, tell me about it. He knew I had college credits and ROTC from High School, but said nothing. I even offered to do the test to promote to E3 before Boot Camp... yet his response was "Nah, dont worry about that, just refer people and I'll promote you."
Then I get to Boot Camp and Im one of two E1s there. The other one was a bit of a jerk off, so that made sense in his case. Whereas upon asking how other guys were E2s and 3s, I heard that they did the test, or had less college credits than me, or did ROTC in high school. The worst answer was "I dont know... I guess my recruiter was cool and he just hooked me up."
Got to my secondary school after Boot Camp, I was the only E1 in my class. Got to my duly station after that, again, only E1, out of like 100 E3 and belows. What's funny is that between my school and Suty Station, I had Leave where I went home (One of two times I took any) and that guy actually wanted me to work for him, so as to keep the days of Leave. I took the hit in Leave days, rather than do that. That said, I made E5 within my first four years, so I guess there was a happy ending... though it would have been nice to have been paid as an E5 for those 18 months he screwed me out of.
Seriously? I just typed all that out, only for RUclips to tank it???
My recruiter has actually been very honest with me and hasn’t tried pushing anything or any job on me. I feel very lucky. I’m going into the national guard here soon and he’s only been good help.
I’ve got a recruiter like that. I enlisted in the NG like a week ago. 74D. Good luck 👍
I think National Guard Recruiters are just chiller than normal recruiters.
National Guard has major issues. They pencil whip most of their stuff.
midnyteblues tell me about it.... i’ve had nothing but issues! I enlisted about a year ago and there’s still issues.
@@poiuytrewq11422 Absolutely not, NG recruiters are known for their ability to lie and play kids.
Adding on to what Matt said, do you due diligence to research certain jobs each branch offers! A job you may enjoy might not be in Army, but may be in the Navy, Marines, or Air Force. I can tell you from experience that it is okay to be confused on what you want to do, but it is A LOT better to just do some personal research before talking to a recruiter.
In terms of commissioning, besides ROTC and OCS/OTS, you can also apply to any of the military service academies. The top academies are US Military Academy (Army), US Naval Academy, US Merchant Marines Academy, US Coast Guard Academy, and the US Air Force Academy. Cadets get PAID while they earn their bachelor's at these schools. I am a 2016 US Air Force Academy grad. I also make videos geared towards the Air Force and being an officer. Check them out!
So if you graduated with a B.S in eng then you have to go to OCS/OTS? Can’t join the academies?

Its funny to me that he says “don’t just say I wanna shoot guns” because my mom was in the army and she chose her mos by them recommending a job and she asked “do I get to jump out of helicopters”.
The answer would've been no. Because she's a woman.
Recruitment for MOS's like Military Police has probably taken a hit since the US government ended the women in combat ban. MOS's like that is where the wannabe infantrywomen would go.
My first recruiter was great (when I was looking at reserves) , he took my interests and what not and chatted with me alot on was able to give me really good job suggestions.
Leaving February 19th to Fort Jackson, your videos answered a lot of my questions. Thanks Matt!
The other thing to keep in mind is be willing to fight for what you want. When I enlisted the first time, I took everything at face value and missed out on a bunch of things I could have gotten. When I went back in after a break in service, I sat with my recruiter and spelled out everything thing I wanted for coming back in. I recommend before sitting down with a recruiter, talk to a vet or current enlisted and find out what options are available and how to negotiate for them (kind of goes with the whole "do your research" thing). At the end of the day, your recruiters job is to get you to enlist- they are not in the business of career counseling. If you are willing to enlist for less than what you COULD have gotten out of the deal, then that is on you. :)
Recruiter: So you don’t know what you want to do, huh? Grab em and hold ‘em
I was definitely the guy who didn’t know what he wanted to do. Recommend following his advice, but my recruiter was a family friend and he helped me find out some cool MOS’s and I became a 12-Bravo with a nice bonus
A intro with no self promotion just straight getting into it?? YOUR A LEGEND
Told recruiter about a history of mental illness and drug abuse was no longer a problem in my life but I still have it as part of my medical history... recruiter told me to not disclose any of that to meps and to essentially lie to meps ... decided I wanted to be honest ended up recruiter shopping looking for a recruiter who might help me get waivers so that I could be honest about my past as I felt honesty was a core part of integrity and as such I did not want to start a military career in a dishonest manner ... after talking to 4 different recruiters who all told me to lie to meps u found one who believed thoroughly in being honest turns out my medical history is non-waiverable by dod standards and that even though the medical past is not currently an issue there was no way for me to enlist without lying about my medical history as such I eventually gave up .... my suggestion if you are desperate to get in the military and your recruiter tells you essentially to lie to meps listen to your recruiter because it's likely your history is automatically a disqualifier and non-waiverable and once you start shopping around for recruiters you have already disclosed certain information over email or on paper more than likely and HIPPA cant protect you as you've already willingly discussed your medical history
Unfortunately, current mental illness or a history of mental illness is one of the biggest factors that DQ's most of the public from serving. If you ever went to a doctor for depression, anxiety, ADHD etc. etc. it's going to be nearly impossible to enlist. I think it's noble and admirable that you were firm in your stance of being honest about your past. I wish you luck in finding success in the civilian world, and sorry the military didn't work out in the end.
Thank you for your service

I know this channel is for future soldiers but as a mother of an only child that has decided to join. I need to know how I’m supposed to help him when I’m having a hard time knowing he is leaving soon and he has never been away from me! (My fault because his older brother died at age of 11. So as a over protective mother I have held him close to me.) I just don’t want to upset him by showing my feelings in my letters to him when he is at boot camp! I just don’t want to cause him more problems. Thank you for all the videos it has helped me to sorta understand what he might go through. I just want to be his biggest fan and support but I don’t want him to worry about me worrying about him. And when I write I tend to put my feelings out there. Don’t get me wrong I want him to be the man God created him to be and I know he is very devoted to what he has chosen to do! He has wanted this ever since he was 5 years old! He hasn’t changed He has always told me this is what he wanted to do. He will leave in August. Thank you for all the helpful videos it’s a blessing thank you
I would say theres nothing wrong with putting your feelings in your letters. My advice is to keep the feelings positive. So talk about how proud you are of him and what he's doing. And things of that nature. I'd avoid saying you miss him or anything that can make him miss home or miss out on what's going on outside of his military training. He needs to remain focused while at basic training. So try to keep that in mind. I hope this helps :)
The pride that you will provide to him during training via correspondence and final graduation will help carry him through his first term in the military. Keep him focused, and NOT distracted on things like "missing home". This is critical. The US Army will either keep him motivated, and succeed, or he will wash out. Based on his personal goals it seems more likely his own goals will carry forward the day. I speak from experience not only as a retired officer and former NCO, but I served as a basic training and advanced individual training company commander whom as part of one of my commands trained recruits from their arrival into the US Army.
What's his mos?
I know my mom was worried when I joined and I heard her cry a lot once I had a phone call with her in between my basic training. I did not even get to say good-bye to my parents as I entered basic. Weird situation, but it happens.
As I graduated and went across the world for my first station, she cried again. I was the first in my entire family to do anything like this. After five years of me being away, she got used to it. What really comforted her is that I told her that I was just going to do a job at a different country.
It is going to take a LONG time to get used to it, but I think it is something you as a parent need to accept. I think a lot of people would agree that is just part of being a parent. In order for your child to be the best person he/she can be, the parent needs to let go. Not doing anything is actually doing something. Your son will miss home and miss you as well. He knows that you are worried and concern already so you do not need to always remind him.
Stop coddling him and let him become a man. That's it. Get a dog or a hobby.

Infantry is great, but the smart move is to think about what you want to do after the military. What's a grunt going to do in civ. Life?...
You can probably earn a lot more if you learn a job. Think someting like mechanic, medic etc.
What other mos would you recommend? Having trouble picking one.
I'm sorry, that is such a personal thing, you can't expect a stranger to answer that for you.
If you couldn't join the military, what kind of job or career would you choose? If you can figure that out, (or at least a general idea), then think about what job in the military would best prepare you for that.
Bonus points if you can find a career in something that will still be possible with a busted knee or back just in case.

But like stated it’s not what I wanted. And in 2017 there was a high demand for us so the agenda was to get as many and I was suckered in. Do I regret it, never, is it what I want to do forever no.
@@upscaleriotsofficial2166 How do you feel about non-engineers going through sapper school and calling themselves sappers? TBH I think its fucking disgusting.
@@Smellynyx I mean, if they go through the school for it and qualify I'd say they have every right to say they are sappers. Get your arrogant head out of your ass.
Matt, What I really like about your channel is that you've discovered your strong knowledge base and share what you know, becoming a subject matter expert in your videos. Well done.
My basic training was in 1989. Your videos have brought back many memories of that time - mostly good memories, though I'm sure I didn't think that at the time. One thing I came away with was that drill sergeants are a special kind of people.
I enjoy what you're doing - keep it up.
Thank you I really appreciate you saying that!!

Thanks Matt! I'm constantly changing my MOS choices, and military branches. Even when I'm sticking to the Army, I went from 11B, 25B, and all that. I'm gonna stick with 31B Police Corps for now.
Please tell me you went 11B.
My recruiter listened to me and really took time with me to find the MOS that would fit me. I went in with a idea but I stayed open to knew ideas and did my research. Also I asked questions to people with the MOS I was looking at.
What mos you decide on?
Meg Knutson it seems you’re not marine material what so ever. In a war situation I can picture you crying over and over. The us military is filled with people like that , that it is embarrassing! Went to a recruiters office, needed an outlet on life, and biggest mistake I may regret is not knowing what mos I wanted to do. Scores very well on asvab and had plenty of choices. Do know what you want to do so it’s not a 2 hour long process of you guys reading off mos list of what’s available.
I am actually glad I didn't join when the army recruiter contacted me, because I had no idea what I wanted to do. Luckily I figured it out for when the marines contacted me
I'm the same way, I have tons of choices but no idea what I want to do yet. I've been taking my time to decide what I want to do and have an idea at least now.
What mos did you guys choose? I'm still having trouble picking
What is mos? I’m new :/

So I am a recruiter now. We don’t sign anyone up for jobs the applicant picks the jobs and it depend on their lines scores for the ASVAB I’ve seen people want infantry and it’s not showing in the system. Everyone picks there own job on the army. And bottom line I tell everyone is if there isn’t a job showing you want then you don’t have to join. You pick a job before signing a contract unlike the other branches that you need to sign a contract before you see what jobs you can do.
Thanks for all the advice Matt, I watched your videos before and during my enlistment process. I got exactly what I wanted, 35m option 40 contract. I ship to fort Jackson on Monday for BCT. Super excited and a little nervous, but I know I'm mentally more prepared because of your videos. (PS: I know you aren't supposed to post ship dates, but this isn't my real name or main account so I figured it's all good)
I wanted to go for Infantry but my recruiter stopped me, as a female I couldn’t have anyway in PA. But, he was right and now I’m going for Military Police after I graduate college this May! Definitely do research, great video Matt!!
Infantry doesn’t even translate into anything in the civilian world anyway.
@@Raccoon_Chic you forgot you can easily go up in rank, and you can easily become an officer when you come out. You also can always get your degree as well while in there

Do recruiters flat out ask people if they have social media accounts? If one does, what if you said No, to avoid some of the creepy stuff I just read in these comments.
Or…are you required to tell them your social media IDs?
My recruiter didn’t mention anything about social media or anything, you’ll be good. Honestly most recruiters just want you to get through meps with no issues and aren’t afraid to lie on paperwork. My recruiter actually had another recruiter call me the night before I went to meps the first time to give me questions any one would ask at meps and make sure I didn’t fumble.
One thing I talked over with my recruiter when we first met was, in regards to MEPS, that confidentiality laws are your friend. Injuries and illnesses you had over 7 years ago are redacted from your existing records. If there is no record of it, it never happened, so you don't say a damn word of it to anyone.
That still apply in 2022?
@@FrauWilhelmKlink still should yeah.
@@mattwolfen Thanks!
My recruiter was pretty Straight forward with me. I shouldn’t have said most things that were clearly not documented but he did tell me as long as they weren’t documented then I’ll be fine. I’m worried cuz he hasn’t contacted me back
Like everything else in life, never put your well-being or future in somebody else's hands. Your goal in life should be to make yourself as independent as possible, and put yourself in charge. Knowledge and skills are more valuable than gold. That's what your young life is for, accumulating knowledge and skills that can be used to help you be free and secure for the rest of your life. Hi Matt. I’ve been watching your videos and your tips/info that’s about the Army is very helpful because I’m building my knowledge so I know what it’ll be like in the Army after I get enlisted and so forth. I’ve been getting myself prepared to join the Army by losing weight and get fit so I’ll be ready. Thank you for your service Matt 🇺🇸
Gonna walk in and straight up be like.. "Infantry." and that's it. Because that's what i want.
Well, if you went through with it, i bet they appreciated the brevity.
Saying you don't know what MOS you want is like asking the server at a restaurant to surprise you with your order.
No matter what you choose when joining....be in shape. And as for today's military, do your research on what you want to be or do, like he said. But fitness is a big plus. Can't say it enough! Everybody gets smoked, the difference is being in shape or not, while being smoked!
My daughter had a great recruiter. He was vary patient. She had a degree in mathematics. She did not know what she wanted to do. He told her to start researching the jobs and just checked in on her every few days. After a few weeks she made her decision. 35N and she is in basic right now. While he could not help her decide, he was very kind and patient.
MC-130J Loadmaster here. If you have your heart set on a specific job, be willing to wait until they have an opening. It's a common tactic recruiters use. They'll say "Oh you want [specific job code]? You'll have to wait a month or two for that to open up."
If you want the job, tell them you'll wait for it. More often than not, you won't be waiting nearly that long.
Can you make a video about families.... Like can our family travel with us to our deployment and what jobs give out bonuses
To a deployment? Ummmm what? No, man, your family can't come with you to Kabul.
I had a recruiter call my phone a couple years ago when I was in HS and to this day I have no clue how he got my number, but we met for about a month and I took some tests and everything looked good, but I decided in the end not to join
"Ooo, a Sergeant! Well, I'm not much for formality, and we've got a lot of waivers to push through, so let's get down to business, Carl..."
"I want to kill. I want to kill! I want to see Blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth! Eat dead, burnt bodies! I Mean Kill. Kill!" And I started jumping' up and down, yelling' "KILL! Kill!" and he started jumping' up and down with me, and we was both jumping' up and down, yelling "Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill!" and the sergeant came over, pinned a medal on me, sent me down the hall, said "You're our boy" Happy Thanksgiving everyone

She wants to make people think she is not psychologically normal. I also said this is going to keep her in a facility you don't want to be in and she could be in a world of hurt! Airborne school is easy. And stupid. You'll know what I mean. TRADOC ruins everything good.
Whenever I planned on enlisting I did research and infantry was what I really wanted since airborne is a huge goal of mine and I figured infantry is my best bet to actually be able to do jumps after the school/training. My recruiters kept throwing out different jobs for me to consider like tank crewman, cav scout, and some other stuff and I think it was cool for them to try to help open up my mind but I did put in hours and hours of research on various jobs so not all recruiters are bad, don't be afraid to talk to them just follow Matt's advice and so research first and prepare some questions.
You can be an airborne tanker or an airborne cook if you want you can get the school in your contract just talk to your recruter
Well done because at the end of the day you're the one that's gonna suffer from getting the wrong mos not the recruiter stick to your plan

My dad retired a master chief. My brother pretty much had no choice but to join the Navy after being expelled from college not even getting through his first semester. After his visit to the recruiter and signing the papers, he found out he was going to be peeling potatoes at some Naval depot in Bumfuck, Godknowswhere. My dad put in a few calls and got him into a career track as an aviation technician, believe it or not. Actually I'm kidding, he was going to be a rescue diver because he had been on the dive team in high school but he had been signed to some non-career track, my dad made the call and got him into the AWS/AWR career track. Otherwise he would have been out after his 4 years.
