@@rithe07 so a little background. I had a tattoo wavier I needed approval before I selected my mos. Once approved I went back to my recruiter's office prepared to select my mos. The only thing available was 68w which I didn't want to do. So I left without signing. Monday morning I get a call saying there is one slot for 68c which was my number one job, for a 6 year contract. I decided I didn't mind doing the extra two years due to getting my number one job. So at that time there was only 1 slot for 68c and only a 6 year contract available. I was in your position too but you should calculate what your planning on getting out of it. For me it was a no brainer to commit the extra two years.

One of the differences between the Army Reserve and the Army Guard (and Air Guard) is that in many states, national guardsmen are eligible for either free tuition or reduced tuition at the soldier's/airman's respective state colleges and universities.
Not exactly. Enlisting/ Commissioning in the state of Texas gives you a 150 credit allowance to any public school apart from what Federal gives you. Active/ Reserve/ NG
One question: if you sign up for 4 years and you re-enlist for another 4 years would you get the same benefits as if you were to have signed up for 8 years in the beginning?
You don't get extra benefits for re-enlisting. But as I say in the video you have a chance at a re-enlistment bonus if you re-enlist as well as having that make your first contract a little shorter too, which is good. So you don't get more "benefits" but you can possible get a lot more money.
@@MattWard89 I've been told that if you receive your bonus while overseas it doesn't get taxed, but if you get it while in the US it will be. I was told that by a SGT at an rsp site.
Bax xtab That would only be true if you were deployed in a combat zone for money received during that deployment. Being stationed in Germany or Japan is not going to waive your income tax obligation.
sign the shortest contract you can get, that way if you dont like it you can get out, and if you do like it you get more bargaining power every time you reup.
Abbie Frankell As yamaha 1996 said, if you are active duty,"sign the shortest contract you can get" Please listen. *DO NOT* sign a long contract (5-6 years) *regardless of how much extra bonus money* they might offer you to. Not only would you have to stay in the military and Army for all that time (the military is a hard life especially for active duty, but most people in the Army have an even harder life for no reason than most people in other branches), *but if you get a MOS that sucks, you are forced to remain in the MOS for all that time until you are a year away from your contract (if you want to reenlist for more time). You CAN'T change your MOS* So please listen when you are told to sign the shortest contract possible, say 3, or even if available, 2 years.
To go along with 1:36 : as a 68W I had the option of a 2, 3, and 4 year contract. I chose the 4 year, but I've worked with a few guys that got the 2 year. Not sure if any other MOS's got those options in the recent year though.
I was originally looking at a 4 year contract which offered a 20k sign on bonus, the 6 year however offered a 40k sign on. I would like to stay in longer than 6 years anyways so the extra 20k for 2 extra years seemed like a no-brainer.
Seeing most of the people leaving soon. im here taking every tips and advice. leaving in 3 months.. Army reserve 92Y Unit Supply Specialist. Great Vids!!
Don’t sign for a 6 year contract; no matter how sweet the bonus is. It will screw you in the long run. I was at Bragg for my first 3 years and liked it there, but you are at the mercy of HRC after you hit two years on station. If a place is low on manning which is 90% of the time Korea...guess where you are going. Loved Korea but I’m currently stuck at Campbell in my re enlistment windows and can’t re enlist for what I want, only can re up for Campbell. Long story short, enlist for 3-4 years at minimum so if you decide you want to re enlist, you can get what you want. Your experience will differ, but just my two cents.
I just signed a 3 year contract with a $5,000 bonus. You sure you got your facts straight Matt? No shame on your channel tho, you’ve helped me so much with questions. I’m leaving on the 19 of August.
I honestly never spoke to my recruiter about enlistment time, I wanted 68W, got 68W w/ Airborne, and now I leave Aug. 5th to Fort Jackson, 4 year contract. It works for me.
Air Force re enlistment bonus is your latest rank’s base salary x with length of your new contract but cannot be go over 90k. Unlike army, Air Force get 3 stars hotel like single room dorms and better chow hall.
If you are just looking for the benefits, the NG offers a 1 year try-before-you-buy contract. In states like Jersey you get unlimited full ride through state colleges as NG after GI bill is expended. You don't get GI bill through 1 year I think, but I think you still get the state benefits.
68w leaving Aug. 6th for Ft.Sill didn't get any bonuses but thank you for the information so I have a heads up for next time. GL out there everyone else.
If you decide to take the 2 year contract for Active Duty it’s two years + training time (basic training and AIT) followed by two years in the Reserve or Guard Component. The last four years of your 8-year obligation are spent in the IRR which is if they ever need you they call you back to service. For example, my contract for active duty is 2 years and 22 weeks. The 22 weeks was spent in Basic Training, AIT, and then inprocessing for my first duty station & my first unit of assignment.
Took the ASVAB and got a 92, having to getting a waiver but also getting cold feet about joining the NG. Just really want to join for the college benefits but I already have an associates so two more years of bachelors degree work I could easily pay out of pocket for, don’t know if I should join or not honestly. Idk.
My husband's recruited messed up big time. He didnt get a bonus at all because every single day they're asking for paper works even after they were already given so my husband didn't get a sign up bonus because his recruited didn't stay organized.... He left very stressed with no bonus at all and they tricked him into a combat related MOS but they told him his MOS won't deploy. So thats that... I just wish all recruiters were honest... 😔
Not a recruiter but I do know that those who currently go Infantry before September 30th if you go for a 72 month contract you get a 40k sign on bonus which you'll get after basic. But that's what I was told by my recruiter. Other information for lower amount of years or so is something they'd have to look.
I have a 2 year and half contract Active Duty but have to serve 2 more years as a Reserve or National guard or stay active but I don’t get my full GI Bill only 90% unless I stay active I need 3 years
Matt you went through the Solider of thew Year process can you explain it in depth in a video? I know that many of my fellow service members are considering trying out for it when we finish basic and AIT. Thanks for all your information and support.
From my understanding is that, the longer your AIT the longer the contract. If your AIT is 10 weeks than the minimum contract will be a minimum of 2 years. If your AIT is anywhere from half a year to a year than the minimum contract will be 4-6 years. The Army will not pay to train you for a year than expected you to do a 2 years contract. My MOS is 15C which is about 35 weeks in AIT and it came with a minimum 6 year contract.
I've always advised people enlisting to take the shortest contract possible for two main reasons: 1. In case you don't like military life and 2. To be able to get a re-enlistment bonus for the extra years if you choose to stay longer.
@@xxsilver_gamingxx389 Yes, also your Basic Training and your AIT time will add some months to the 2 year contact and not all military occupations or Military branches will offer 2 year deals. Why sign for 4 years if say can do a 2 year contact and then reenlist for another 1 or 2 years with a signing bonus.
Advice that I was given by both my Dad and Recruiter (Dad’s been in for 25 years now.) Take the shorter contract. I had an option for 25P at 4 years with $25,000 or 6 years with 40,000. I knew I wanted to make the military my career. So I was all set for the 6, and make that extra cash. At least one immediate family member ancestor has served. My family has participated in EVERY conflict since the Revolutionary War. Before that my family is Scottish (Clan Shaw). So fightings in my blood. But my Dad and Recruiter both said “just because it’s in your blood doesn’t mean you’re gonna like it. Take the 4, if you like it you can re up with another bonus, different job, or some hooah hooah schools. Best decision I ever made. Because at this point, I’m on the fence of re uping. Some days I love it and I can’t imagine doing anything else. Other days your CSP paperwork gets messed up for a second time, and you’re going on 14 months without living with your wife and you’re ready to rage. My advice. Take the shorter one, even if it’s a little less money. You can make it up with future bonuses, and if you hate it, you don’t have to wait that extra two years.
The Coast Guard gets picked on a LOT, but they have a system I find pretty cool. I think the Navy does it as well: a "Non-Rate". That means that they get to see what other MOSs do before they choose. Which is great. But it wouldn't work in the Army, which is larger than the Navy. The Army has more MOSs as well. Probably because you are specialized unlike other Services. Except the Marines. They have Specialized MOSs to. It's better to do something you love. I am reminded of that One NCO who had FOUR MOSs during his career. He didn't like one, he tried something different. I know Grunts and Engineers who became MPs. MPs who went into Aviation, Transportation, Infantry. I knew an ADA guy who became a PAC Clerk. So get the smallest contract possible. But do whatever you think is right. This is just my opinion.
I’m in the Guard with a 8 year contract. Six years active drilling and two years doing IRR. I also get a 20k bonus, Montgomery GI Bill and the monthly kicker on top of college tuition assistants. I leave for basic in two weeks
I signed a 2 year contract - total term 2 years and 22 weeks (BCT and AIT included) after 2 years of Active Duty I must serve for 2 years in the Reserves or National Guard.
@@mrs.nesbitt5301 2 years active duty - the training time that it takes to complete basic training and AIT is not included in the 2 year contract meaning your two years on active duty shows on your initial contract at MEPS as 2 years and “whatever number” of weeks. My contract is 2 years and 22 weeks for active duty. Keep in mind that the 22 weeks is just for my contract and that’s MOS dependent. It could be less or more for you depending on the job you choose in the Army. It could be the same if you took the same MOS as I did or an MOS with the same training length. If I make the decision to ETS (get out) I must serve two years in either the Army Reserves or National Guard. The last four years out of the 8 year obligation I must fulfill are spent in the Inactive Reserve (IRR). The IRR requires no drilling it’s just there so if they need you they can call you back in
Don’t forget you need 3 years of active duty time (training not included) to qualify for the college dollars. I have a buddy that did 6 years reserve as a Medic then became an LPN. He got out and was told when he went to apply for the funds he did not qualify as he did not have the time. My son is 19d and he got 3 years plus osut time. He gets the gi bill. His roommate is on a 2 year enlistment. No gi bill. The devil is in the details... especially for the reserves.

Exactly… but i will take the 4 year rout bc idk if imma like the army or not but either way after my 4 year contract I wanna leave the military to become a sheriff deputy
Also reenlistment is one of the few times you hold any control in the army, as long as you arent a shitbag you can get schools, mos change, duty station of choice, etc. Guranteed in your contract. Also ALOT of people are super hooah when they first join alot of people often change their mind
Also if you hate your base when you re-enlist you have a change to PCS somewhere else. My husband did that when he re-enlisted, we got to choose our base and he also got a bonus. I do know you can’t always get both, he almost didn’t. He’s in a medical MOS
Daaaaamn. . . I already signed my 6 year active duty contract. I should’ve watched this first, but hey mayyyybe I’ll want to re-enlist after and potentially have another opportunity to get the bonus.
So I joined a little over a year ago and they do have 2 year Active Duty contracts and I had 6 months with basic and AIT. No bonus at 2 or 4 years so I chose the shorter one for reenlistment bonuses i.e military schools or money. You have the chance to re-enlist within 15 months of the end of your contract.

and thats why it's so important to sign up for the shortest contract possible, 3 or if available, 2 years. Unfortunately, that is not always emphasized to people, so they might wind up signing for longer contracts especially if the longer contract in a MOS offers extra bonus money.
I'm a 68c (practical nursing specialist) and signed a 6 year contract due to the intense ait schooling. I leave in 21 days XD. Wish me luck! Hooahhhhhhhh
6 years was the only option? I'm asking because I want to do 68k and I know the ait is 1 year but I would like to enlist for 4 years instead of 6.

I’ve never heard of a two year contract since the US Army is always a three year at a minimum for MOS 11B.
If you are just looking for the benefits, the NG offers a 1 year try-before-you-buy contract. In states like Jersey you get unlimited full ride through state colleges as NG after GI bill is expended. You don't get GI bill through 1 year I think, but I think you still get the state benefits.

Does it work for 3 years as well? Training+ 3 year active duty??

I see, if that’s the case, I would assume 42a can be a 2 year contract? Something I’m interested in.
I've always advised people enlisting to take the shortest contract possible for two main reasons: 1. In case you don't like military life and 2. To be able to get a re-enlistment bonus for the extra years if you choose to stay longer.
I’m about to get out of High school soon so do I do a 2 year contract and later on if i like it I can sign a longer one ?
@@xxsilver_gamingxx389 Yes, also your Basic Training and your AIT time will add some months to the 2 year contact and not all military occupations or Military branches will offer 2 year deals. Advice that I was given by both my Dad and Recruiter (Dad’s been in for 25 years now.)
Take the shorter contract.
Only option for my mos was 6 years, 15T. Shipping out in 1 year to Fort Jackson.

I just enlisted my MOS 25B active Duty required a 5&1/2 year contract.
Aye, congrats 25B is a tough school but just study in CCNA 1 CCNA 2 and Security and you will be fine.

@Jesus Chavando Yeah
I’m interested in doing the same
@@mrs.nesbitt5301 Go for it. I’m sure the Army is still offering 2 year contracts as we speak.
Im feeling like this now but i haven't sworn in or signed any contracts yet...
When they get you in shape just continue to exercise don't stop some people get fat after they leave the military because they stop exercising
@Bible and Politics this is exactly my train of thought. i don’t mind the low pay or being away from home. i just can’t do these normal ass jobs
Sign the shortest contract possible that still includes a signing bonus. If you actually like it and want to reup, chances are there will be another signing bonus when you extend or re-sign.

Also reenlistment is one of the few times you hold any control in the army, as long as you arent a shitbag you can get schools, mos change, duty station of choice, etc. Guranteed in your contract. Also ALOT of people are super hooah when they first join alot of people often change their mind
