- Here is a quick glance at the complicated process for soldiers to be promoted.
NOTE: Once you want to become an NCO (E-5+) one must build a promotion packet to submit. Therefore, it is on the individual to ensure their smooth and fast promotions.

My father actually had to request, be approved to attend, and complete an entirely different MOS school as an E-6 because his position (Senior Medic) was changed from an E-7 slot to an E-6 slot. In order to be promoted from E-6 to E-7, he actually had to change MOS, so he went to school to be a Forward Observer. Of course, it helped that he was a Marine Infantryman before he was an Army Medic & O.R. Tech.

As for E7 to E9. There is a TIG requirement. If your accepted into the 2nd zone you can be promoted in 2 years. Otherwise its 3 before they add you to the list of promotions.
My 18 yr cousin just graduated from bootcamp and will be leaving for the marines in 2 days. He is one of the strongest people in his division and I hope he will be promoted soon!🥳

This would be an awesome series to start actually.
That's Interesting. My reserve center promotes based on time in service. Maybe every unit is different. I put my Sargent packet in today. Fingers crossed. I'm ready to lead soldiers. Oh and if your reading this and you want to join. Don't listen to the people that complain. It has it's ups and downs like everything else. Do it! Hooah! great job Ward I used to watch you before I joined. Congratulations SIR!
When my grandpa was in the Army in WW2 if a higher ranking soldier got killed in youre platoon the. The most qualified would get promoted to that rank
thats in time of total war, there is no time to do all that process to get promote
It should still be a meritocracy honestly
@@ayoutubecommenter1827 It technically is.
The *best* gets promoted.
Maybe not as perfect as in other times but it counts as a meritocracy.
@TheChelus they wouldn't do all the paperwork to promote you but you would legally be prompted due to the situation
This is why becoming an army officer is the best thing for your military career. Within 4 years of academic studies you get to become a leader at such a young age, that's what i'm currently doing with mine i'd highly encourage you to do the same!
I’m not so sure, depending on the goal of your career. Officers have outstanding leadership abilities sure, and? As far as I’ve been able to discern, commissioned officers specifically are not very technically inclined usually. Is that true for your case as well, or are you knowledgeable in any specific skillset other than leadership?
As for me, I’m looking to make a beeline for WOCS as soon as I enlist after completing my 4 year degree, because I’m after a skillset above all else.
Im enlisting bc im poor but im gonna be taking advantage of the green to gold program to get a degree and comission up asap.
In terms of money, A fresh faced butter bar iirc makes roughly the same as like a Sergent with 8 years of service.
I went in as an E3 because I had two years of college. I made corporal as a 19G in 11 months. I went to combat learship course and made E5 Sargent in 23 months. Yes, this was back in the old days.
Thanks a lot Matt, your video have helped me so much! I'm on my way to get promoted to E-2 before I leave to basic on the first of July to Fort Benning.

Wanna make it above e-5/6? Go to a combat mos. You get promoted. The only MOS that get low enough points to promote.
Wow. 9 weeks and 4 days later it's weird to comment again. I can finally say that I'm an American soldier. Fort Jackson Delta 334 dragons was my home. Fort Lee here I come. All your vids helped me prepare. I graduated today and left POV it's so weird being outside alone with no BB around. Well best of luck to you and the future soldiers reading this. "Reign fire". Btw we got honor company!!!
Zeph Belk how was your experience at basic training and how is AIT school?
If you're thinking about joining. Just know that reception Is a week and basic is 9 weeks and 4 days. Reception was the absolute worst in my opinion compared to actual basic training. If you dont mind getting yelled at and being told what to do and when to do it and are able to hold your tongue then basic will be a breeze for you. But just because you can do the right thing dosent mean others can, police your battle buddies and get a system going and hold meetings with your platoon in order to improve. Teamwork is the DreamWorks in basic. If you work well with others basic is only going to be as hard as you make it. I'm currently in AIT ft. Lee atm, it's like college here. They still have drill Sgt buuuut....they are way more relaxed and some I can talk to like a friend but that's situational. Trust me the grass is greener on the other side. If you haven't picked your mos yet pick one that'll benefit you outside the military because once you go to AIT you gain college credits towards any college you apply to after you get to your duty station!!! So choose wisely. Oh and the scariest thing for me was that I was afraid to fail, here's a friendly tip....everything in the army is an open note test including basic and ait. So keep that in mind while you join.
Hey Matt, just wanted to say I watched a lot of your videos prior to shipping out to bct last year, I graduated back in August. But your videos have helped me out a lot!!
I joined the Marine Corps and I’ll ship out to Parris Island on June 13th, 2022. I get he hottest months 🥲 I guess we will ship out in the same month.
Long hair enlisted in 71 after getting my draft invitation. Was offered officer school opportunity in basic but said hell no. After less than five years with every school, correspondence course, tactical training , and NCO school taken, and a time in grade wavier I was promoted to Army SSG E-6. That’s even with a MP MOS! Never consciously kissed ass and never was an a-hole to my fellow soldiers and buddies. I just worked hard and stayed out of trouble. ETS after 6 years. It can be done and had a good time doing it for the most part.
just got outta BCT at Ft. Jackson, i’m at Ft. Leonard wood now for my AIT as a 88M, thank you so much for all the infos & tips. keep it up Sir!
Isaac Duduline
Was it hard? I'm shipping out there in August. How many people didn't make it and got dropped out? And what was the hardest thing?
Luke NoFluke I went last year in August to November. My company started with about 150-160 troops ended up graduating with only 120-130. It wasn’t really hard it’s just depends on how mature your company is. Mine was the opposite so we always got smoked. Wasn’t too bad tho, the hardest thing we had to do for us at least was the last graduation requirement and that’s the forge. It’s 3-4 days long I don’t remember but it’s physically demanding but as long as you keep that positive mindset you can do it bro. Don’t sweat it. Hooah!
@@lukenofluke9687 its all based on your drill seargents on how hard it is just before you go every day do push up sit up drills so 1 set of 2 min situps then 2 min push ups then 1min 30 second pu/su the 1 min then 30sec then 10sec also do a 2 mile run daily you do all of this you should be fine come basic

hi Matt, I was in long ago and it looks like they haven't changed much. In my mos they froze the rank and put the number at 997. That was a bummer, but I did manage to get 887 points and was still working on things when the dropped the cut of points to 850, did get promoted, nice. You do a good job in helping these soldiers look at things in a positive way, thanks sir
My son went into basic as E1. Graduation day got promoted to E2. After AIT went to his unit and 2 months in promoted to E3. But the E3 promotion on the paper work but not finalized yet. Along the way to E3 He has have gotton some awards. You move up ranks pretty quickly if you work hard. Also I notice with my boy that if you stay close to the sgt or the commander and let them take you under their wing, you can rank up quicker but moves you up in line to get deployed...
It depends on his MOS/ job some are easier to move up in the ranks and others take forever.
@@simply_bree9363 that's after you get to e4
@Quantumfied yes, I myself came in as an e3 because I had an associates. what some people may not realize about coming in as e3 is what you said about "E-4 is also automatic but takes a substantial amount of time to get it because it requires a certain amount of time in the army to make."
Someone who comes in as e3 won't make e4 any faster than someone who came in basic with them as an e1 (though I did get promoted before several people I knew from basic whom I've kept in contact with), and when that e3 gets to their unit, the e2's there will make e4 before they do because they've been in longer.
When I made e4 I had a bunch of others tell me "it's about time, you've been PFC forever" because I came in as e3 so I stayed there for well over a year.
mac burger yeah but I’m not talking about the e1-e3 stage. Some jobs have faster promotions is what dad and Recuiter told me one of the recruiters at my station is a cook so he was able to move up faster. While someone was a 91 C who took forever to become a e5. The points is what takes forever
@@simply_bree9363 yes, the points for each MOS will vary from time to time too, a few months ago (I don't know about right now), cook (92G which is my MOS and a MOS I would very strongly advise against) had like 698 points whereas it's often times like 40 points.
Before going to basic I used to watch your videos, they were a huge help, specially the Land Nav one. I'm currently in AIT as a 35F. Huge props for your videos and how informative they are.
Moises Villanueva I leave next week for 35F! How is Fort Huachuca treating you?
@@YoungBUG716 I'll be honest. Its dry as hell, and running kills you. When you get here start running everyday whenever given the chance. That's the biggest struggle. Apart from that, is very chill and relax. My AIT specifically is very relax. P.T. is much better compare to basic. And being given the chance to go to the gym is a big plus. It's not bad and it offers a lot of entertainment. If you're into hicking, this place is amazing for that.
Here’s a simpler breakdown of how to get promoted in the army if you don’t wanna watch the whole thing.
1. Kiss a lot of ass.
2. Run fast.
3. Learn to screw over your battle buddies and strive ahead.
Done.
Dam that's easy!!
if you watch your own ass and do what is right and good you won't have to worry about anyone selling you out cause there is nothing of merit...

I think all soldiers(especially active duty) should start going to school as soon as they get to their unit. Especially because there's no longer a 1 year wait to use your TA. Start stacking up those promotion points early ESPECIALLY if you know your MOS has high points!! Good look trying to scrape up 700 points in 2 years TIG as a SPC/CPL when you probably are a team leader and have soldiers to manage or other responsibilities. Play smarter not harder!

My wife's uncle served 24 years in the Mariners. He retired an E8. He was so close to an E9, but he was going to have to wait quite a while for someone to retire.
Negative, there is a time in grade and time in service requirements from E1-E4 across all 3 Army components. However, you can get a waiver for promotion in all 3 components
You can make E-6, staff Sergeant by doing the following showing up on time in the right uniform in the right place and having an excellent PT score. E7 through E9 is purely political.
Remember guys. A 21 yr old can get his cdl and make $2400.00 a week. You see ALL of the US in 5 yrs. ALL of it. A passport costs $125.00

I was in the 82nd from 89 to 92. Became a Spec4 and went to PLDC. Got out before promotion and went into the National Guard. I was a two time combat vet at that point, with combat jump wings (Operation Just Cause/Operation Desert Storm). I was passed over for E5 because the dude that got the spot was always National Guard and was able to finish his associates degree and almost his bachelor's when I was just starting college. His college outweighed my rack.. Smh. I decided then I was not staying and got out, even though I made E5 a few months later.
Smarter not stronger. Sucks that you might have been busy with your deployments to go to school but degrees hold alot of weight. Especially over deployments to e5
This is an out of date look, around 92....I have been in since 94 (with a six year break in service) but the promotion system has drastically changed since the 90s. Now the NCOER plays a huge role in promotions and deployments are given more weight mainly because the Guard and Reserve have played a larger role in the fight with deployments. College degrees are still significant but don't necessarily get you ahead. There was a lot more of the buddy system 90s which could hold up a good Soldier. Not nearly as much now with the current system.
It definitely sucks that happened to you and soured you on the Guard and service. Hopefully you capitalized on your military training and made you successful in the civilian world.!
@@waynebrewington4141 yeah well that's bs. That's what I told the retention NCO. I said I have no confidence in the abilities of this light infantry unit if we deploy. I will die with these soup sammies.. Guess the 82nd spoiled me even though it was a constant pain in my ass. But there is a reason we trained so damn hard, because we had to be ready. We went first.
@@caseyvallett8953 I served from 89-97. 8 total years. Yes, civilian world I am making 6 figures a few times over now but I had to earn that over many years. During my guard time, Clinton was Riffing the military, and the guard wasn't quite rolling with the army standard promotion point system. I came to my unit with pldc completed but that didn't matter. Sure they slid me into a team leader slot and laterally moved me to corporal. But that's extra responsibility, without the pay. I was salty, for sure. I was one of two in my guard unit that had a combat patch and the only one with combat jump wings. Permenant Valorous unit citation, and four rows of fruit salad. Expert qualification and PT score was in top 5 percen(not hard to get in a guard unit, some disgusting fat bodies reside there....) . To be clear, anyone can take their Junior Leaders Course. It’s usually a pathway to a promotion tho: points!
To take Senior Leaders, you must be an NCOminimul, corporal or master corporal: take the SLC and get promoted to Sgt. from there it’s Master Sargeant (I don’t think that exists anymore however) on to Warrant Officer 2nd, then 1st then Sgt Major. From there it’s officer . Second Leftenant, 1st, and so on
My grandpa has some of his ribbons, medals, and championship badges framed on the wall- I saw his retirement certificate. 80% C fund, 10% S fund, 10% I fund.
You can custom tailor between those 3 funds or go 100% C fund if you want, but I wouldn't go below 70% on C fund.
The C fund is essentially an S&P 500 index fund. The S&P 500 index fund is the top 500 US companies spread throughout the whole fund with a heavy portion of it on the top growth stocks like Amazon, Google, Apple, etc.
Just park the money into there. Also make it a Roth contribution. Roth contributions are after tax versus traditional which is before taxes. Just means with a Roth you have already been taxed on that money. With traditional that money isn't taxed until you pull it out and it will be taxed at the income rate of that year in your retirement. You don't know if we will be seeing 50% income tax rates in the next 30+ years so better to just make it a Roth contribution and know when you pull 500 dollars out of the account in retirement that it is going to be straight 500 bucks tax free.
Also, if you can contribute something like 200 bucks a month for the next 40 years into an S&P500 index fund it should result in having well over a million dollars in retirement.
Can you elaborate on your commander giving you points? I’ve been in over 5 years and I’m a SGT.. I’ve never heard of anything like that nor have I found that in any AR/ADRPS!
Anyone that joins the army now automatically achieved Caption dip$hit ranking in my book.
