- Today, December 8, 2020, it is exactly 40 years ago that the world was shocked by the death of John Lennon.
In honour of John Lennon, who never attended the Toppop studio, we hereby publish the only Toppop performance of his son Julian in the Toppop studio on 11 February 1985.
John Charles Julian Lennon (born 8 April 1963) is an English singer, musician, photographer and philanthropist. He is the founder of the White Feather Foundation.
He is the son of the Beatles member John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia, and was the direct inspiration for three Beatles' songs: "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (1967), "Hey Jude" (1968), and "Good Night" (1968). His parents divorced in 1968.
He has produced a number of albums, beginning with Valotte (1984). He has also held exhibitions of his photography.
In 2006, Lennon produced the environmental documentary film WhaleDreamers, and in 2020, Lennon also worked on the documentary film Women of the White Buffalo, as one of the executive producers.
Valotte reached #9 in the US charts and #55 in the UK charts.

I remember hearing this and thinking it was John. I was totally blown away when saw the video and realised it was Julian. He's an amazing artist. He proved that John's genes are deeply embedded within him and he is not just the son of John Lennon, he is Julian Lennon, his talent is crystal clear to all who have eyes to see or ears to hear.

I love this song, both the tune and the unique lyrics. It reminds me of the mid 1980s and my bittersweet adolescent years. Julian is very talented and a wonderful person.

What a terrific single and debut album from Julian. The only question I have is how a talent like he does not go onto superstardom in pop music? Having caught a few recent interviews of him, he clearly has his head screwed on right; a very likable fella.
I saw him answer your question in an interview once; said he couldn't stand the people in the business, not so much the musicians he played with, but on a executive /mgmt level. There's alot of narcissism, backstabbing, ego, greed, corruption, and even occasionally murder in that business. He took the Divine route (commentor above said he "looked like an angel " ???)

This song/performance is one of the things that I recall upon my move from the East Coast for all of my life in New England and New York I’m starting a job in Salt Lake City Utah
I felt very strange, among the typography and
people of the far western United States were new to me. This song reminds me that it was playing all the time every time I was listening to a radio. Julian’s song made me feel more at home than I would’ve been out in the west of Utah in Salt Lake City in a new job.

It was released in October 1984 on Charisma and Atlantic. The album was first certified gold in the United States, in the new year, then shortly afterwards being certified platinum. From the album, four singles were released, each with a music video, charting at various positions on the singles charts in both the United Kingdom and US. "Too Late for Goodbyes", the second US single, and "Valotte", the first US single, were both US Billboard Top 10 hits, the former reaching No. 5 and the latter reaching No. 9. The album peaked at No. 17 in the US and No. 20 in the UK. Lennon toured the US, Australia, and Japan in March-June 1985.”
