Songfacts: Lennon wrote this in 1983 at a French chateau called the Manor de Valotte, which is how the song got its title (the word "Valotte" does not appear in the lyrics). In our interview with Julian, he told the story: "The place where that was written, which was actually a beautiful little run-down chateau in the middle of France, which is where the label at the time decided was a good place to send their artists to work out their writing skills. I know that Thomas Dolby had been down there and a few other high-end acts at that point in time. It was just a really tranquil, beautiful spot in the middle of nowhere, where one could get a little lonely, I guess. The song initially came from that idea of just being in this beautiful landscape and dreaming of the idea that if you found that love of your life, this is something that you'd aspire to. It's as simple as that, really."
Was at least partially written on the Tennessee River where it was recorded, at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, in Sheffield, AL. This record astounded me from when I first heard it - and it just keeps sounding better. Lost nothing after over 35 years. The voice is hauntingly like his fathers, but the talent is all his own. Very out of place in the 1980s or really any period, it rises above it all. No one can touch this today or should even try.
When I first heard it, I had no idea of Julian. I thought it might be something recorded during the "Double Fantasy" sessions that they were just releasing. Shocked when I heard it was John's son.
When I first heard this song on the radio, I thought it was an unreleased John Lennon song he had recorded after Double Fantasy, presumably for another album. I had no idea John's son was even a musician.
why shouldn't anyone try to "touch this"? isn't that how all great music comes to be, through admiring and learning from other's music through imitation and innovation?
First time I heard this song- I thought it was John Lennon - then I learn- amazingly beautiful, listening to the words gives massive chills- I million times love his work. He’s a man of his own💕
Absolutely. Julian looks just like John and has his voice. He deserved so much more from John. His son with Yoko was clearly his favorite. He picked wrong.
Fun fact: his full name at the time was “John Charles Julian Lennon” (he later changed it so Julian would be his legal first name) so technically it *was* John Lennon, just a different one 😂
John gets so much love for his love of Yoko but he treated Julian and his mother like crap. John Lennon was POS when it got down to it regarding his personal life.
The most talented Beatle kid by far! This song's success had nothing to do with the fact that he was John's son. I was an 18yr old kid when I first heard this song in 1984. It sounded great back then, but now it just sounds so beautiful that has gotten better with time like fine wine.
I was 17 in 1984 and I remember when this kid came out with Much too late for goodbyes. Has the talent voice and looks of his dad, but without his help. God bless Julian. May you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved !
+Thundergod129 Seems more sensitive and dreamy more like Paul, but in his own right and similarities in his voice to John but again with soft fullness like Paul.
A short story. When I was a kid, I would hear this song on the radio here and there at the grocery store or wherever. I kept this song in my mind for the last 30 yrs or so, wondering what it was called, or who sang it. Well, fast forward to today, one of my friends on fb was wondering about a song and a friend of theirs said you know you can even hum a tune on Google to find a song (as opposed to just letting Google hear a song to identify it for you) I NEVER thought to do it. Well, I did just that this morning, and after over 3 decades, my humming for 5 seconds found me the song I wondered about all my life!
Haven’t heard this in years . Such a beautiful tribute to his Father . We all miss John. Julian , Not sure where you are these days but peace be with you . ❤
Remember being around 13 in 1984 when I watched this on the MTV Top 20 video countdown. Even back then I knew it was great. Awesome song by Julian Lennon.
This song takes me back to the times I’d hear it when riding in the car with my mom and dad. They both liked it so much and would usually turn it up to listen. It was one of the few pop songs that connected with them, I guess. I can never hear it without mourning their passing, while at the same time appreciating what a beautiful and meaningful song it turned out to be for me. Thanks, Julian.
I wish John had been here to listen to this song. Julian and John's voices blend as you can distinctly hear that in this song. It is one of the best written songs about life love ,loss and looking upward to the future. My heart hurts for Julian. He really loved his father very much.
I remember when Julian came out with this album Everyone (including my music teacher ) remarked how much he looked and sounded like his father, John . I was in grade school, but I knew who the Beatles and John Lennon were, and once I heard this song I agreed . This song sounded exactly like something John would have done. Julian may not have gotten everything from John that he should have, but he did get the gift of his fathers talent.
Julian is better than John. At least Julian had more sense than coming up with a song like Imagine which is an abomination to this earth. And what SHOULD he have got from his father/ Julian is his own person and John is John.
@@cilliansands6166 Julian should have gotten time, attention and more of a relationship with his father. Then there is his inheritance from his father's estate that he had to fight for. Sadly it was by John's own choices he didn't get much of any of those things.
"Julian may not have gotten everything from John that he should have, but he did get the gift of his fathers talent." So typically, callously HUMAN. We give NO ONE their due. Is as if you are saying that Julian is not his own person, his talent is just an extension of John's. RUBBISH!

lucy bond I can't help but think that John (had he lived longer) would have began to realize what a gem he gave birth to. Guess we will never know. But just look at the class of Julian...it is contagious.
+lucy bond There is evidence that isn't exactly true. Many people , including Julian himself, blame Yoko for John not having more contact with Julian. The most obvious clue that this was indeed the case is that John started seeing and being more involved with Julian at the request of his then girlfriend, May Pang during his brief separation from Yoko in the early 70's. From then on Julian began visiting his father regularly, even after John and Yoko reconciled. By the mid 70's John and Julian started becoming closer, and John had began encouraging Julian's interest in music. John got Julian a Gibson Les Paul guitar and a drum machine for Christmas 1973, and had started showing him some chords. The evidence says John would have been proud of Julian's musical ability and would have continued to encourage it had he lived
+MIKECNW We certainly CAN blame Yoko (and John) for that. Yoko insisted that since she was without her daughter Kyoko (whom she abandoned to pursue married father John Lennon) and never had real custody of Kyoko again, that John should also not have his firstborn son Julian in his life, because it made her miss her own missing (deserted) child more, and that just "hurt her so much"! And John accepted Yoko's bullshit logic!

For those asking where is Julian Now. Try doing a search and you will find he is still making great music. That you can buy. Also so is Dhani Harrison. Just look into it. You will see. The wonderful, fantastic Beatles passed on some wonderful DNA. Not only is Julian and Dhani famous in their own right but Zak Starkey the son of Ringo, drummer for Oasis and also now The Who. Very appropriate being drummer for the who since having Ringo as his Dad and Keith Moon as his God Father. As for Dhani, George was teaching him as soon as he could hold a guitar in his hand. As for Julian he had to do all the hard work on his own. Natural talent. You've got 3 very successful musicians there. I would suggest someone check them out before saying where are they and what have they been doing. You might find some music you will be extremely happy to listen to. By the way this is only my opinion. I love the Beatles and I do not agree that anyone should try to recreate them. As for their Kids they have their own music careers and should be respected for their hard work and talent.

One of the most underrated songs of all time. Julian is clearly singing about the pain he feels about his father that forgot about him. I really commend Julian for his honesty and strength. When I heard this song for the first time, I was stunned. He sounded so much like his father. Then I saw the video, and was blown away by how much Julian looked like John.
Seeing Julian in interviews over the years, you can tell he was raised by a sweet, kind Mum.
One of the greatest songs of all time! Brings back great childhood memories
Yes I agree a awesome song and juilan Lennon a awesome singer and song writer
The most talented Beatle kid by far! This song's success had nothing to do with the fact that he was John's son. I was an 18yr old kid when I first heard this song in 1984. It sounded great back then, but now it just sounds so beautiful that has gotten better with time like fine wine.
Me too!
Am 57 now and still one of my go to songs
I was 17 in 1984 and I remember when this kid came out with Much too late for goodbyes. Has the talent voice and looks of his dad, but without his help. God bless Julian. May you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved !
Really eerie how much he sounds like his dad. John's spirit lives on....
+Thundergod129 true, always thought this as well
He looks a lot like John, too. He has the nose, I think.
he has his eyes and face shape
+Thundergod129 Seems more sensitive and dreamy more like Paul, but in his own right and similarities in his voice to John but again with soft fullness like Paul.
+11WaterSkier11 Nothing about Julian reminds me of Paul....
This, along with Too Late For Goodbyes, was the very last piece of film directed by the great Sam Peckinpah. This song is, by far, Julian’s finest.
Just came here from "Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia".....talk about a change of mood...
I had wall to wall posters of Julian, he was my first 80s crush
Me too.as a matter of fact,i suggested the name Julian to my sister who is actually conceiving when this video was shown in mv2.
One of my first concerts as a teen
If John Lennon were still with us,he'd be extremely proud of Julian-This is a fantastic song!
not sure he would. He hated Julian, and traumatized him as a child
Yes indeed
The truth is not quite as rosy as you’re portraying it. John Lennon treated Julian like crap and caused him all kinds of issues
@@jalsbrook4475and Yoko actually treated him better than John. That’s crazy because she’s not exactly warm. 🤣
@@jalsbrook4475 To be fair there was a time where John and Julian were on good terms in the mid 70s.

I was born in 72 and remember when this song came out on MTV too!!!
@@justinelmusico3370 yup me too. 72 baby here. This song and Julian's voice made quite an impression on me.
JRFrancisco20088 I love this song so much!! He does not get the recognition he deserves & never will (unfortunately). Love him anyway.

This song is a masterpiece. ♥️
No matter how much time goes by this song still has the same magic. You are a beautiful talent.
I wish John had been here to listen to this song. Julian and John's voices blend as you can distinctly hear that in this song. It is one of the best written songs about life love ,loss and looking upward to the future. My heart hurts for Julian. He really loved his father very much.
GOD. We need this now. The Beatles and Julian. I so wanna go back!
This was the first record I ever bought when I was a kid. I listened to it over and over.
I am 60 and listen to it over and over, so beautiful.🥰
This song is gorgeous, I’ve treasured it for many years ❤️
I remember when Julian came out with this album Everyone (including my music teacher ) remarked how much he looked and sounded like his father, John . I was in grade school, but I knew who the Beatles and John Lennon were, and once I heard this song I agreed . This song sounded exactly like something John would have done. Julian may not have gotten everything from John that he should have, but he did get the gift of his fathers talent.
This album is surely Julian's talent, but we can surely count it as John's missing album as well.
"Julian may not have gotten everything from John that he should have, but he did get the gift of his fathers talent."
So typically, callously HUMAN. We give NO ONE their due. Is as if you are saying that Julian is not his own person, his talent is just an extension of John's. RUBBISH!
@ Tuff Bud. We are both. We are our own person, but we are also an extension of those from who we came, for better or worse. Like it or not. Who's to say what we inherit from our parents, or not?
I think this is Julian's best song!!

R.I.P. Julian's Mum Cynthia.
yes, I feel like she helped him with the disaster once he got old enough to understand that it was a split family (Yoko) Julian has the "John genes". Its as simple as that, he has his dads voice and talent.
Cyn was a total class act. Julian looks so much like his Dad because Cynthia looked like John in a lot of ways. She was treated like dirt by John. I love Lennon's music but in many ways he was an asshole. He also had a kind side ,too but----.
Its hard to put into words how great this song is.
10 x the talent of his father and yet so under rated. This man is a legend. And beautiful

I heard it when I was 11 in '84.
I loved this song back in 1984 when I was a boy of 9. - Just as super great today - If not even better,as it was then - Since the very first time I heard it at age 9,Over all those many years ago it holds a special place in my heart and mind dearly beloved❤.
Julian is the best....he is adorable...great singer, musician and now a photographer, plus a humanitarian. Wow, I loved himsince the 80's,,,wish I could meet him. My name is Jude. "Hey Jude".. Love ya Jules!
John would be very proud of Julian. Great song
lucy bond I meant that this music is good probably by even John Lennon's standards.
lucy bond I can't help but think that John (had he lived longer) would have began to realize what a gem he gave birth to.
+cisio64123 Can't blame Yoko for that.
+MIKECNW
We certainly CAN blame Yoko (and John) for that.
Just brilliant so unfair that John never gave him the time as a father , an undeniable talent

I think Julian Lennon's arrival on the pop scene made people who love John Lennon smile again, knowing that John's talents (& looks) passed down to his children, that although John Lennon can never physically return, his legacy lives in 2 of his talented children. Julian came at the right time & he's still with us, like his father, singer, songwriter, humanitarian, artist, filmmaker, etc.

The LP was recorded in 4 studios between February and August 1984 at: Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama; Bear Tracks Recording Studio, Suffern, New York; A & R Recording Studios; Clinton Recording Studios; and The Hit Factory, the latter three located in New York City.

Julian's voice sounds just his father. Incredible.
One of the most underrated songs of all time. Julian is clearly singing about the pain he feels about his father that forgot about him. I really commend Julian for his honesty and strength. I wish John, Julian and Sean got a chance to know and spend time with one another. When I hear the line ‘thinking of a reason when it’s really not very hard’ I hear his pain. Personally, I think Sean looks a bit more like John than Julian does. They both resemble him, just in different ways. Julian's singing is better though.
Sean is a freak. Julian is a great dude and got royally screwed by Yoko and John.
... du'h. seriously? Who cares? Only for a "short" mind it would matter. ;)
When I heard this song for the first time, I was stunned. He sounded so much like his father. Then I saw the video, and was blown away by how much Julian looked like John. But, being JL's son has never been easy. There are the inevitable comparisons, the time of Beatlemania when John was physically and emotionally absent, and the many years the two were estranged. Julian has had to endure a lot of rejection and abandonment throughout his life. I hope he finds peace and satisfaction through his career and philanthropy. Good wishes to you, Julian!
