  • The Overture from The Phantom of the Opera London on June 27, 2023. I was given the chance to watch this performance with James Gant/Paige Blankson and even the next day with James Gant/Holly-Anne Hull (super strict about video the 2nd day). For this performance, there were a couple of folks next to me that talked through lengthy parts of the Overture (even if they were recording too). Unfortunately, the mic picked them up. My seating was nowhere near as good either day as when I was in Broadway but the video is a good peek into the physical set changes that they made in London (and perhaps for Broadway someday). Enjoy!

this recording is very well done, thank you very much for sharing this! however, i can't help but sigh. what was once the greatest overture of all time feels so hollow in this production. the "reveal" of this proscenium feels sort of pointless, as there is only a few drapes covering very little of it. when maria bjornson's original, gorgeous proscenium was revealed, the awe of seeing it for the first time as the chandelier rose was incredible and a feeling you just couldn't get at any other show. for the entire overture, you WERE witnessing the palais garnier being restored to its original splendor. all gone now. :(

      I absolutely agree.
As time has gone by having seen both broadway and london this year it’s really grown on me.
The majestic was unbelievably beautiful but everything was really showing its age and I feel other than the proscenium and orchestra, the new London production really brings it into the 21st century!

whats even more sad about it, they dont even play the overture. The start of the overture leading into the key change (2:41) at they dont play at all. Quite sad to see

Seem different after the pandemic. I like it better when it was HER Majesty's Theatre...

It’s because the OG production was replaced by the World Tour version which is a modified version of the “brilliant original”, which is what I prefer over this watered down version to save money.

Very different vibe, I agree. Phantom will always be Phantom, but I think a lot of the eloquence of the original production has been lost.

It’s 2023. For the love of God, stop shooting videos in portrait mode.
