What Makes This Singer Great? Milijenko Matijevic
Miljenko Matijevic literally reached another stratosphere when singing in his multi-octave range and today we'll look at what he did when singing that made him great.
Born in Croatia, Miljenko (also known as Michael), moved to the US with his family when he was six. 3 years later he began singing in church choir and at age eleven he was introduced to Led Zeppelin which started him on his musical journey.
He knew from his early teens he wanted to be a rockstar and in the late 80s he joined a band called Red Alert which later changed their name to Steelheart.
As the frontman to Steelheart the band enjoyed commercial success right away with their debut album selling 33,000 copies on its first day in Japan alone.
The album went on to reach platinum and its power ballad, "She's Gone," hit #1 on the international charts, staying there 17 weeks. Their second single, "I'll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)" reached #14 on the Billboard charts.
Miljenko continues to perform and in 2016 he performed the Dream Concert in Korea where he became the only foreign artist to ever perform a concert to an audience of 60,000 people.
Today we'll be looking at a couple of live performances from Matijevic and I'll explain the technique he's using to get that range. I'd love to hear what stands out about him for you so please be sure to let me know in the comments!

Come on. This guy is clearly one of the best rock vocalists that has ever lived. super underrated and undiscovered. Most unfortunate about his stage accident. Simply a vocal God
Rock on.
@@kentamplintoo many underrated great Rock vocalists. Jeff Scott Soto and Hugo Valenti and quite a few others come to mind
AGREED 👍 🔥🔥💯
I believe Micheal voice is one of the best I have eve rd heard, in my opinion, way better than Axle Rose!!!
I agree completely, my era , his voice is amazing! My ex wrote all of Europe’s songs, but his voice is better than that! ❤
He gives goosebumps all over my body. He's voice is beautiful he's a beautiful man.
That guy can belt it like no other. Was and still a monster. Lost a lot of range now but still a better singer than 80% of mainstream artists nowadays.
Rock on!
His range and singing always blew me away. Never thought he and the band got the recognition the deserved.
Rock on!
This guy is a vocal God! One of the most natural gifted singers out there! So under rated
He's doing that sh*t live...LIVE! No filter, no auto-tune, no whatever other effects they use these days. Just a microphone and that dude's kick ass vocal talent. I think this guy is incredibly underrated in the rock singer lexicon. If he had been in a bigger band, we might put him up there with Coverdale, Dickinson or some of the other greats. Not Freddie though, there's only one Freddie lol
Rock on, Mark!
Dickinson, great idea. Would love to see Ken do one of these for Bruce
Facts
Beyond underrated. He should have been our metal IDOL and is non the less, the best human voice I have ever heard in my 62 years.... ever!!!!
No one on this planet can sing as like him. He is really genius.
Thanks for watching, Yithachu!
@@kentamplin Ken, you are one amazing singer. Really can't tell you that enough! I am so proud of for recognizing this mans insane vocal range and have the balls to just be a humble human and a fan. Kudos to you!!!!!!! You have earned some serious street cred ! Thank you.
Wrong, Tommy Johansson can
He's so flawless it seems every time ..truly gifted .. even still today ..just stunning beautiful..I can never take my ears or eyes off him whenever I see a video ...
This Guy was Always an Amazing
Vocalist, I don't care what anybody says, way Underrated, but way Amazing, Thank You Ken Tamplin

For me, he's is the best. My favorite singer of all time. The tone, the range, the pitch and the interpretation of this guy are just amazing. He inpires me to learn more and more about vocal. He's just the number one for me.
One of if not THE best voice in rock/hard rock ever.
Milli and Sebastian Bach in their primes still giving me goosebumbs whenever I listen to their songs
His voice is a gift to all of us.
Yes for sure always loved his voice in the 80s great show in concert and still good til this day WOW never can get enough listening to him sing he's smiling
My mom was a opera singer ,I inherited some of her beautiful talent Ability but unfortunately my autoimmune diseases have wrecked havoc on my bones & even my jaw bones so I have to get dentures, I'm so afraid I won't be able to sing anymore 😔
Mili is a amazing talented singer with a voice of a angel ,one of my Favorite Singers by far & in the early 90's he had a stage accident & even broke his jaw in the accident & came back stronger than ever & his voice still sounds awesome today & is still hits all those high notes ,he takes care of himself & does daily vocal exercises, thank you for sharing this video i enjoyed it !! 🙏💖😍🤘🥰 🎶🎤 🎼🎵
I kept waiting for one of those high notes to go flat or for him to bail and go low instead, but he nailed it every time. I found myself holding my breath through the entire note. Mikey is definitely one of the greatest talents to come out of the 80s hairband era.
This guy had a voice that was unmatched in the day.
I’m 57. Loved music since nine yr old was always mostly amazed of very talented vocalist more so than the guitar or drums bass player ect , the vocalists is the soul spirit of any band
Seriously one of the greatest..
Indeed!
I agree he is awesome love him
Matijevic (ma-ti-yea-veetch) is one of the greatest voices to come out of the Balkans.
They have a great musical tradition in that part of the world.
Wonderful!
Miljenko Matijevic - Mili, Mladen Vojijich-Tifa and Toshe Proeski... the power house trio from Balkans.

Hes still a wonderful singer love listening to him sing
So do I.
@@kentamplin I still get goose bumps listening to this amazing singer. He is such a beautiful man and an angelic singer. What a waste for our generation to have missed out on this absolute amazing and once in a life time voice.
Love his voice! Would love to be able to see him perform live. He is iconic with his vocal range.
Wow! Why hasn’t this guy been more acknowledged than he has? He has the pipes!
He's always been one of my favorite singers of all times his voice is one of a kind great job buddy
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
My all time favorite band and still listen to miljenko💜the mans voice, in my opinion, is the best, EVER, every time I hear him I get chill bumps💜
Grew up on hair bands. This is the best male singer I have ever seen. He is the Whitney of men.
👍👍👍
What about Geoff Tate of Queensryce ? Octave 8 in his prime
With the exception of Geoff Tate or RJD of course.
Cornell is better..this guybhas high range butvcouldnt sing bluesy. Cornell has both
Emotion unlimited and the lyrics ...and he pour out his emotions and super ranges and placement ...great mvoice....
Indeed!
i HAVE SO MUCH RESPECT FOR this true talent vocalist ...over the years i have developed the most admiration for real vocalists that can perform live and still sound as well or better than their album recordings ... those are the real ones to me ...thanks for posting this ...love your technical review of it too ...new subscriber
I remember when their 1st song came out. He's been my favorite vocalist since. '88 or '89. Miss the old MTV.
He’s Awesome! Second favorite band. I’ve never heard anyone hit the notes like he does. He’s still pretty good. I love hearing others cover She’s Gone just to see how they match up. Thanks for bringing out his power voice❤️🔥💫💫💫🔥🎤🎸🇺🇸
She's gone is one of my all time favourite songs.I love the way he uses his mixed voice and I love your version of she's gone.
May God bless you, Ken
Such a great song!
One of my favorites. Chris Risola is so underrated on guitar. He's incredible. The first two Steelheart records are fantastic.
I'd like to see you do one on Kip Winger. Love his range, throaty screams, and songwriting. He sounds amazing live too.
Mili has the most incredible amzing voice. And so georgeous. Always be my favorite rockstar of all time. I wish him good health and more years to llive.
One of the best of all time. I've always loved him since I heard of him.
He's great!
I agreee that Milijenko is clearly one of the best vocalists I have ever heard
i remember seeing steal heart in the mid 80's, our band was at the show and when he hit those notes our mouths just dropped, freakn' crazy pipes. It's easy to scream that high but to sing that high, not in a million years.
Rock on!
he has a very beautiful and powerful voice, perhaps one of the most powerful that I have heard that still manages well today... of course he also has his secrets, but for the kind of music they made he was suitable... I don't understand why he doesn't sing anymore... the transition between bass is high and scary..
Never in the mainstream but always in my opinion one of the very few awesome singers. Not hitting that range nowadays but still very very good voice even in the lower register.
Rock on! 👍
They were a guilty pleasure when they came out. I was too metal at the time to admit, but that first album still sounds solid when I listen today! Thanks for showcasing him!
Rock on!
Amazing and he still is today
Thank You Ken Tamplin for discussing Malijinko Matijevic,

Thanks For Talking About This,
Mr.Ken Tamplin, this Vocalist is Way Underrated
And Way Amazing Voice
Thanks Again Ken Tamplin
Vocal Academy,
The Proof is in the Singing
This guyzz every emotion when i saw her face lovely face ever Milijenko Metijevic very good singer very powerful voice
Also Templin made an example Matijevic is naturally a high tenor . If you're a low baritone it will be more difficult to train your voice to reach these highs . One thing I would respectfully point out is now that Matijevic is older he has actually become more technically proficient now . More so than the clips used here ( all from the early 90s ) . How else would he be able to still hack it ?! Great analysis sir !
Unbelievably fantastic singer!!! I wonder if he can still hit this high notes?
AmAZing Singer!. , he is like thee Voice., * melting when I hear him, Good band and song too! *
He is amazing.
STEELHEART one of those late to the party bands. their 1st lp came out in 1990 that is way late for this type of music. Hairbands were dropping like flies at this time. Michael is an amazing singer. If this band would have come out 5 yrs prior they would have been huge. The whole band as a whole was amazing, no slouches in this band. Michael was one of the best at this type of singing you can tell he spent a lot of time developing his voice to pull off this range live and he made it look pretty easy also. He did not start out strong in his songs but it sounded like it. He was a master at knowing how to mix his head and chest voice to where you had a hard time telling one from the other. That takes a lot of practice and dedication I know that as fact. I do know he has lost some of his range I have seen more recent footage that shows it looks a lot more difficult now than it did in years prior. Ken, you are awesome at breaking things down and explaining Technic. That's why you're the master. Your course is, unlike anything I have ever seen. I have been singing my whole life and never knew the technical terms of what was going on. I am learning sir what it all means. I would have never guessed it was so complex. Singing is one thing singing correctly is a whole other ballgame.
Bill Wren 👍
Hair bands weren't really dropping like flies in 1990, that was still a big year for hair metal in fact, it came mostly in the latter half of 1991 and even in 1991 there were still major high charting "hair metal" albums that were released that year.
The year that hair metal really got murdered was 1992.
Even in 1992, Firehouse's second album managed to chart and reach gold.
Def Leppard's adrenalize went #1.
Steelhearts debut went platinum so it didn't do badly at all. Their second album didn't perform very well though.
What really sucked about the 90s is not only that glam or hair metal died but metal in general kinda did.
Thrash metal, traditional heavy metal etc... all went away in the 90s at about the same time as hair metal.
@@lrn_news9171 --- I agree that hair metal was still alive in 1990 (ie, Queensryche's "Empire") but by 1992 it was pretty much dead ---- I think Steelheart would've had a big a career as Motley or Bon Jovi if their debut album came out in 1984 and they had a good producer to make catchy songs
its true... They should of happened much sooner than 1990
Handsome man, long beautiful hair, high range, great singer, great guitar player.
Hmmm....
Sounds like someone else I know by the name of Ken Tamplin!
My GOD…. THIS GUY, is drop DEAD GORGEOUS, AND, that VOICE‼️😍😍😍…… NO ONE LIKE HIM…. Good Lord…. ❤️❤️❤️
In his day he was the hottest thing I've ever laid eyes on! He's still no slouch. Seems like a really good dude too.
Got to see them live in late 1992 when they first hit. Absolutely amazing in person. My second favorite band with my first favorite lead vocalist.
Wow! Loving the build!!!! Awesome!🌟🤩💓
Glad you like it!
Sir, I really enjoy watching your stuff which is convincing & professional since you demonstrate instantly after you deliver those techniques to us! There're some big names that I'd like to watch you analyzing (even briefly) their voices since they're all legends:
Females - Lisa Fischer, Barbra Streisand, Rochelle Ferrell, Minnie Riperton, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Céline Dion, SoHyang, Patti LaBelle
Males - Dimash, Vitas, Milijenko Matijevic (as you did here)
There's a male Taiwanese pop vocalist, Tom Chang, who passed away in 1997, leaving some live vocal showcase videos & causal vocals that can be found here on RUclips. He had a very similar timbre as Milijenko Matijevic's (I meant that classic "metallic" feeling). The host of those shows said he could be classified as a "sopranist" or "countertenor" with mixed voice at G5 (not sure if this is exaggerated but I've listened to some of his vocals with stamina in A5, phrasing in G5 & pure head voice up to D6). Really wish someone will conduct a professional analysis on his vocals.
Pardon me if this comment looks greedy! I've just started learning vocal music but with great passion to know more academically, especially on those legendary figures.
Thanks for the suggestions, Voyager Fest!
I love Mili's voice! I love Steeelheart too. He has one of the highest range in rock also, I like the way he controls his voice. Most singers, sometimes, fail or slip on sharp notes, however, Mili does not. Great voice control. His brain and voice are always in the same place. Btw he made a few songs for Rockstar movie like "We all die young".
Stalin Cruz 👍
He is one of the greatest singers in rock. It is very difficult to try doing the same he does. I have tried to sing She's gone, and it is hard to nail those high notes. I just uploaded a piece of my Steelheart's vocal cover to youtube, so you can check it if you want. Thanks @Ken Tamplin for sharing this! 🤟
My pleasure!
Keep rocking man! 🤘 greetings from Nicaragua!
Too good to be true... always a pleasure to hear you Ken defining technicalities. Will be great to see you cover Steve Marriott sometime assessing his singing prowess. Thanks & God bless
Mili is incomparable.. Theres a lot of great rockers..but for me.. Mili is on the top. In case of vocal range and control.
👍💜😀
Mili is one of a kind. Ken said it best .5 of the all time best. I’ve watched recent RUclips where is speaks about the accident and his struggle to recover. I really admire his persistent spirit. Would love to hear your analysis of “My Love Is Gone.”
Mili is amazing!
I had a chance to see Steelheart opening for Lynch Mob in the early 90s. Miljenko had broken his leg a day or 2 before and still hit everything from a stool. I still remember it to this day even after a ton of shows since.
Awesome!
They were OPENING for Lynch Mob? Damn I'd think Lynch Mob was even less popular than steelheart at the time
I saw them open up for LynchMob at the Ranch Bowl in Omaha, Ne. Great show! It was also a great little music venue back in the day.! I believe a documentary is being made about it. Anyway, Steel Heart and especially Mike M were great in their day.
Milijenko is a legend, and Tamplin is not bad at all, hahahahaha, you guys totally rocks, hail from south of Brazil 🇧🇷
Rock on!
thanks Ken. I enjoy following your channel and your love affair with Milli. I think he has one of the best vocals ever and wish they would have had their day during this era, because they came on in the end of the hair band days and then his accident that set him back a while. He also often has gum in his mouth and still sings like that.
Thank you.
Still relevant :) Miss you guys every day!!!!!
YES!! Finally... Been thinking when you're gonna talk about Mili 😁
Thanks Ken. 🥰
My pleasure!!
What a legend singer tunder voice ken you are very good man
His song Sticky Side Up is another one of my favorites, have always loved him and he's a great guy. Best vocals of any long haired singer of the era!!♥️
😀👍
I completely agree!!’
I saw Steelheart live in June ‘91.
Absolutely amazing and totally live.
Great live band.
He is amazing ... 😁👍
For sure!
He is amazing...love it!❤️
Hi Ken!
I like to hear you explain and take it down how they sing. thanks for that and I like following you on RUclips.
He has a voice from up above somewhere, that’s for shore...
I would like to hear you talk about kizz singer (both Of them).
One of my favourite singers from my youth is Eric from Mr Big. Why not check him out 😉
Thanks for the suggestion, Sofia!
Love that Mili has gotten so much additional love and exposure via various ‘reaction’ vids. There was a time (at least around people I know) where I was the only one who had heard of him/SteelHeart.
Ken - be great to see a video on Meat Loaf (not just in why he’s great but also his 70’a/90’s heydays vs more recently - as his pushing chest and timing has changed a lot)
😀👍
This reaction it's all the money.....Steelheart were great and Mili... god.....this voice is gift from heaven... ❤❤❤ thanks ❤❤❤
Still sounds like this live today!
Love him....He makes me blush
Holy cow, his hair is almost as big as that voice! Great breakdown!
Glad you liked it, Jessica!
That’s what’s giving him the power of his voice.
@@fridz66 Like Samson.
i could never pronounce his name but god dam he got a hell of a voice
Absolutely!
thank you ken this is my request 😁and mili is my favorite singer and thank you for explaining the technique he used👍🏻👍🏻🤘
My pleasure!!
Once again, a great analysis of a great singer. Amazing he can still hit a lot of those notes today, just not sustaining them as long.
I could be wrong, but I always thought his surname was pronounced with the same soft "j" sound as his first name, Mat-i-yay-vich.
Please consider doing a What Makes This Singer Great episode on the late Midnight from Crimson Glory. Thanks!
Thank you.
Miljenko is great singer...until now the voice is getting more gorgeous. Amazing voice and handsome Miljenko Matijivec 🤟
Precela Palaganas 👍
Been singing for over 30 years
I called it ironing out the speed hump when I was young 🤩
Thank-you for this indeed always appreciate your kindness and skill
I wonder how long it took him to develop his voice. He's obviously gifted, a 1%er that worked very hard to achieve his potential. Would also be interested to see if he did lessons or learned as he went. Teaching can help or hurt at times depending on the person..gotta research his history more..thanks for doing these Ken!
👍😀
Thanks so much sir Ken tamplin
Wonderful 🥰
My Favorite Music this Voice is very Powerful Wonderful.🥰💜💜💜🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I appreciate him so much more since watching your videos.
Glad to hear that, Gina!
Love watching you Ken, by watching your reactions I can tell you truly love music!! Mili makes you feel the emotion and the music just delivers it right to the heart! ❤️ love for you to react to White Lion, Night Ranger and Dokken. 🤗❤️
Versatile vocally and great song writer and musician
Dude rocks!!! Seen them many times always on spot.
Great to hear!
i love steelheart a lot i saw them and met them lovely men
Nice!
@@kentamplin i love monsters of rock cruise a lot
Excellent analysis as always.
Mili hits notes that only dogs can hear
vvv
You are so true with your analysis, Sir. 👍 I guess, you had worked a lot with this kind of Performers that had blewn the roofs with their megapowerful voices.
Without a doubt one of the greatest lead singer with a very gifted voice as you have said. And not only him, but all of the Steelheart's members made a great combination back then with the arrangements, lyrics and production of each song. Something very hard to find in nowadays.
Thanks for the thoughts, Lorena!
@@kentamplin Good evening. I don't know if you have ever talked about Faith No More, specially Mike Patton singing style because I think that his voice register in songs like FNM smash hit Epic, and in the whole album Welcome to the Real Thing but in the followed ones like Angel Dust or Midlife Crisis or in songs like Ashes to Ashes is something amazing and I have understood that is one of the best singer in the rock era.
Amazing voice
Seriously don't have words. This guy is just unreal.
Would be awesome if you did Tony Harnell from TNT. In his prime (80's and early 90's) he was incredible. One of my favorite singers ever!
Thanks for the suggestion.
Now that would be awesome. Anything off of "Intuition" would ROCK !!
He's still delivering the goods, too: ruclips.net/video/OUq3LtAzeUA/видео.html
Not to mention: ruclips.net/video/SviX-0XOe9Q/видео.html
Now this gets really interesting. 😁😁😁 Wow harnell on his works in tell no tales, intuition, and realized fantasies is really good. A really really good singer too.
I think of Steel Dragon from Rock Star and Steel Heart when I think of Milijenko! I'm glad you didn't showcase "We All Die Young" as that song (which is amazing) doesn't show his entire range as well as these other songs! Well done Ken!!!
Rock on!
Man that range is awesome.Never heard him before until your video.I swear to God never heard him before.Thank you for making a video on him thank you so much.
I'm glad I got to introduce you to him, Monjoy Mandal!
Thank you so much sir.❤❤❤
Even if technically Mike doesn’t know the theory of how he is singing, between head and diaphragm, that makes him even better because he is doing it organically, live, on the spot.. pretty damn good if you ask me!
Thank you Sir for great post shared appreciated..
My pleasure!
In my opinion there is something so worm in his voice ''color'' , don't know how to describe that, It so faking good for my ears :). even when he's high he's still so so so good and he's perfectly controling those high ''flat' tones and vibrato - he is not like a sheep at the endings. So if he could reach those notes at live sets that means that he could do everything he wants in studio (30 years ago). I found Steelhearth month ago and i have to say that i ve never heard something like that in my life and i cant belive that I didn't find them before. Probbly there are some guys with technicly bigger ranges, but in my opinion, this combination with his natural lovely color and lovely highs and vibrato is insane ,he is NR1 for me. Unlucky accident ruined everything.... Cheers Ken
He has been one of my favorites for years along with Geoff tate
You are the one n only legit vocal coach ken thanks a lot for guiding us to how to become a great singer your voice is awesome iam doing what you have taught in your lessons its just great👍thanks a lot😊
