    How To Sing Like Milijenko Matijevic - Steelheart - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
    As many of you know Steelheart has always been one of my favorite bands led by Miljenko Matijevic's phenomenal vocals.
    Though my voice is vastly different from Miljenko, as a baritone I'm still able to get up into his high tenor range and today I'm going to show you how I do it.
    As he mainly sings in the alto contralto and even soprano range, I'm able to use the same technique I teach you, which has given me the mechanics to get up into his range and sing in that registration.
    I'll be sharing a version I did of "She's Gone" where I demonstrate how you can actually set your voice up to be able to sing in a whole other registration.
    As I teach you how I transition seamlessly from chest to head voice, I'll also look at another example of KTVA student Kati Cher as she is able to belt from her chest register to take on "I'll Never Let You Go".
    I hope you all enjoy our versions of these Steelheart tunes and that you find the tutorial helpful. Please make sure to let me know what you thought in the comments!

    Wow such good info. I notice that I am getting better at overlapping head and chest although for now I really concentrate on using and growing my chest and I am! But these videos help reiterate everything and illustrate the perfection of it so thanks. What is the greatest part is when it happens to you. I mean I can do stuff just four months after starting your program (I do the workouts about 6 days a week tho) that I never would have thought possible.

    Ken this is amazing. I love the fact that you point out every little change and we actually hear it. I will never listen to a song the same ever again. As far as Kati, she is a star. She reminds me of a cross between Lita Ford and Pat Benatar. This is a true testament to what you can do in your course. I have seen Kati come very far. What a great teaching video. You are the real deal dude. Great job!

    I totally agree with Ken when he says there is hope for baritones. I've practiced singing with almost no help from outside from the beginning of the '90s. As a baritone I had a dilemma from the very beginning since it was clear I liked heavy metal and wanted to sing it, it obviously was beyond my range. Now I can sing A5 (or A5#) well and I am getting better and better all the time. Last autumn I noticed there was A-ha's Take On Me on a karaokelist of my favorite bar. Now I think I can do it in karaoke where it is not so horrible if something goes wrong. Even E5 sounds quite good. And the quality of my singing for this particular song went up in just a few days. But what I want to say is that if I had known from the beginning that it is possible to gain such improvements to one's singing I would have taken it much more seriously. If someone wants to sing it is better to train with the help of e.g. Ken cause I'm already over 50 years old now and it is quite impossible to do any career as a singer any more. Younger people have their lives ahead and crucial information should be available to them. All a singer needs is some musical ability and a lot of enthusiasm to sing. BYW another reason why I would not have aimed to have a career in music is that I'm not capable to compose music myself and I do not have absolutely no ability to produce texts for songs. Quite important abilities for a singing musician don't you think?

    Very interesting analysis and tips that hardly no vocal coach talks about! The "slider" in the Steelheart song seems to be G4 - B4 - D5 - G5. I am a tenor and most comfortable is to connect into head on the 3rd note, just like you pointed out!

    I've always thought Mili is one of the most underrated singers from the 80s. I also think he is one singer who almost sounds exactly live like they do on their recordings. EVEN TODAY 30+ YEARS LATER IT'S ALMOST THE SAME LIVE! Do yourself a favor and discover Mili and Steelheart. Mili is also an excellent acapella singer!

    • @dougcm98
      @dougcm98 Год назад +1

      Little correction: he wasn't in the scene in the 80s. Steelheart is an early 90s band. They were a bit late. The metal scene shrunk a lot in that decade.
      ...and that explains why he's "underrated".

    • @tjskutube
      @tjskutube Год назад

      He had an accident that kept him out of the music scene for a few years. When he recovered, grunge had taken over the music scene and Hair Metal was dead. He is still one of the greatest voices ever in music history. It's the 2020's and he is still out there singing, like he did in the 80s and 90s, which no one from that time can do.

    Here's where everyone can dust off and use their tired "Cool story Bro!" comment. Steelheart were playing in a club not far from us '92-93-ish. We went to see the show with the "He's gonna not be able to hit that last note of Never Let You Go live" attitude. The band as a whole SLAM live-great energetic show! Vocals spot on-no lyrics missed like some 80's-90's rock lead vocalists did/do live. Our first shock was seeing him smoke cigarettes onstage. Which I do not condone at ALL. That he was/is a smoker would have been an interesting caveat to mention in this video. I don't know if he still does it now. But what a way to waste your talent. I really enjoyed his contribution to the Rock Star soundtrack. Any way-he not only nailed the last note-he held it longer than the studio release!! Talent is talent. Regardless of time, trend or genre!!

    My issue is the part in Never Let You Go is never the height I can do that pretty well as the sliders it’s the in between parts where his register is high through the two verses. I feel like I can’t get enough power for those parts. And I’m doing the breathing thing like you said too but I think it’s like you just said knowing and preparing for the register keeping my cords relaxed until the time to really project. I’m watching every video u have on this btw

    Definitely one of the toughest songs to sing and why you don’t hear anybody try to cover it very often. This is one in my arsenal that I pull out every once in a while to wow people. But I don’t know if it’s something that I would do on a nightly basis unless I knew where my voice was completely every night. Which I generally don’t know until halfway through the night anyways. LOL. Great stuff, my friend.

    When I stub my toe...👣
    I hit those high notes with ease.
    That's how figured out how to do it.
    I walk barefoot alot...and im blind and clumsy.
    And because I'm trying not to use bad words...these days.
    I control the pain in an interesting way to take my mind off the fact I just messed up my foot....again.
    So I borrow the high lyrics off of this song.

    I recall vividly 20 years ago when I began taking lessons and having natural bass ( voice ) . It took so much just to get up in the tenor range . Now doing extreme Heavy Metal / Hardcore style type songs / bands . I use mostly mixed voice in that tenor voice and pure falsetto for high screams . All this to say the techniques Mr . Tamplin in speaking of apply to all style of vocals . That goes for Death Metal as well believe it or not .

    As is true in bodybuilding, you really need to have a solid, natural base already in place to build upon. If you are a naturally thin person, no amount of weightlifting will turn you into a wide-shouldered, broad-chested beast. The same is true of singing. You need a good voice to begin with. A million lessons from an accomplished vocal coach would *_never_* turn me into a good singer! Lol

    Totally incredible! I swear on the Blessed name of Dio that she has got to be one of your best students ever. There was also another girl that you had on a while back who had a voice very similar to Alannah Myles. I would love to hear more videos with her. For some reason, her name eludes me at the moment. Maybe I need more coffee....
