What Makes This Singer Great? Ann Wilson - Heart
Ann Wilson is surely one of the most influential female rock vocalists of all time and today I'll be sharing with you what I think makes her great.
Fronting the band Heart, her career was defined over two eras and Ann's smooth vocals delivered a range of great tunes that remain timeless.
Growing up Wilson had a rather shy personality which was partially due to the fact that she used to stutter. Aside from that, Wilson had a problem with being overweight and she was often bullied about it, which didn't help the way she felt about herself.
In order to deal with her low self-esteem, she took up singing, first performing in bars in Seattle where she managed to find fulfillment in performing onstage.
As she overcame her personal challenges, Ann's career blossomed and she developed into the talented singer and songwriter that we all know.
I'll be taking a look at a performance featuring a cool, acoustic rendition of "Alone". I hope you all enjoy the video and make sure to share your comments on what you thought made Ann great!

Beth Hart sang Changes in front of Black Sabbath, sang Jimi Hendrix songs with the Hendrix family, sang Soulshine with Gov't Mule which is a side project of the Allman Brothers and also sang I'd Rather Go Blind at the same Kennedy Honors event. The performances of Heart and Beth Hart were considered by the Kennedy Center Honors to be in the top five performances the that Honors have had.
Ann is defiantly the bar on what makes a great all around singer.

The radio was alive with the sounds of life in the Seventies and there was an endless stream of great music and Heart was one of those groups--Crazy on You and Magic Man were enough to cement their place on the Mountain of Rock. And on the radio or the Midnight Special, it was Ann that made those songs hot to the touch. She soared and wailed and smoked and emoted.

Something grand happens when Ann lets her soul fly; she has a voice for generations. I found her around 1990 when I was ten and I've since come to realise that she's probably the best rock belter ever. Warmth, tone, effortlessness bordering on ridiculousness and just being right there in every moment.
All that said, my favourite moment in the Heart catalogue is probably Dog and Butterfly. Such an organic piece with everything just affirming life.

@@kentamplin Oh wow! Thanks for replying, Ken! I keep watching your videos, you're amazing! I used to be a singer myself. I have a Michael Bublé kind of voice, not by choice. I have never been able to develop my mixed voice. For me, it's either full voice or falsetto. I bought a bunch of techniques but nothing works. I know the theory, I know how it should feel, I know I should not increase the volume when I go up but in spite of all the practice, it doesn't work. It's like my voice can't do what you do, and I so wish it could. Appreciate your gift, it's very precious.

Ann Wilson has been my female vocal hero since 1977❤
When I think of Ann, and what makes her the master at her craft is her raw power and her never compromising demeanor in a Male driven world.
She is not what she used to be since the early 90s, but she never disappoints with her limited range and shortness of breath in 2020!!

Crazy On You was one of the first songs I had to learn. I thought my band was crazy to give me that song right of the bat. But I listened to opera since young cause my mom was an opera singer so that helped me out. I achieved singing lots of heart by listening to her over and over. The mind will learn to mimic. I think Mistral Wind and other slow ones from same album are tougher.

I grew up in the 70's, and female. What I remember about Heart are many things. They were the first rock and roll band, fronted by women, that I knew of, I did follow The Runaways for a bit, but Heart was my favorite. But finding a rock and roll band fronted by women??? Come on, how huge is that? Love Ann's voice. Loved her and Nancy's harmonies. And I love, Dog and the Butterfly.

How do you achieve such ease in your lower register? Ann Wilson sure can reach high notes, but how did she build such steadiness and expressivity in her lower register? Impressive

I love Ann’s voice! I’m going to see her and Pat Benatar in August and I’m so excited, I just can’t hide it. As a 22 year old, I normally get some “is that kid really playing this.” kinda looks from other people when I’m jamming out to 70s-80s rock in my car.

I was 14 in Hollywood in 1974 and my mom was an apartment manager and right next door to our complex was a half way home for celebrities relatives that had issues. I played guitar for a little benefit they had and I heard these two young women at that thing that were amazing they sat in a room with me for about 20 minutes encouraging me as a future entertainer telling me to never give up this was 2 years before Dreamboat Annie came out so that was my first introduction to Heart

A beautiful voice, of course. I love how she gives every song her all, even those 80s songs she didn't write or particularly like. She SOLD the hell out of them. You can tell she wants to be loved by the audience. And they do love her.

Most driving rock woman vocalist that can never be replaced. Perfect pitch and dynamic range. Powerful stage presence. She could really bring it. He and Nancy harmonies are just hard to beat. They truly were head above all.

As a little girl i one recorded myself on a tape singing to Alone at 12 years old i forgot about it and my step dad found it in his stuff and played it back to me when i was 17..it was awful but i heard a dreamer trying so hard with all of her heart! Nobody can hold a torch to her..I learned to be myself because everyone else is taken😍🎼💥💃

She totally delivers! What I think makes her great is she has a very strong almost masculine energy yet it is very feminine also. The best of both really. I grew up with her music and loved Magic Man and Barracuda so much. Her music can be quite sensuous and I love to sing along because I really get what she is saying and can feel the lyrics. I just wish I could hit all the notes. LOL
