Saw Whitesnake last year in Buffalo, and I think it was the last show on the tour..Although David's voice was a little tired the show was the tighest I've seen by any band in a long time..He commands the stage like no one else and knew when to ease up on certain notes that might have been tough that night...The consumate professional...Reb and the band was spot on!

davids a true pro. He's lost much of his vocals over the last couple years, but the man is STILL doing it. That says alot. He must love the fans and his music. He still oozes that it factor that makes him who he is on stage. That cannot be coached or taught. Kudos and thanks for sharing this Ken.

Imaging how great a singer you are if Jimmy Page can't get Plant back but still wants to tour with Zeppelin songs, so he calls you up. Haha! That's a big endorsement. Another great video! "In the Still of the Night" is always a favorite to try and sing loudly!

I first took notice of David Coverdale's voice in 1987 when my local radio station started play the original studio version of Here I Go Again, and I was still in middle school at time. Things that come to mind for me are his killer high baritone (or tenor according to some people who disagree with me), the Led Zeppelin influence in his singing, and of course Tawny's appearances in Whitesnake's videos in the late 80s.

Ken, I feel like I almost owe you an apology. Even though I have been into Hard rock and Christian Rock all my life, I even play guitar and sing, been subscribed to your channel for at least 5 years, I had never heard any of your music. My loss. The Story of Love, Living for my Lord, amazing songs. Those riffs, OMG ! Not only do you sing like a beast but your guitar playing is a giant killer! I don't like long comments so I'll end it by saying I am now and will always be a fan of your music.

I heard Coverdale speak in an interview from the 70s on radio (back then) and was amazed how deep his speaking voice was. I was a DP mk3 fan through Burn before I got into the mk 2 gear like In rock, Fireball and Machine Head (always been huge fan of the Gillan era). I really liked DC's bluesy crooning type approach before he lets loose. I found a similar voice 20 years later '92 in Cornell with Sound Garden. Cornell's voice quality had a similar sound to my ears, from a similar musical inheritance. I have been hooked ever since. Not many come close to these two awesome singers.

I really admired is top notes ( I can't hit them) and in my covers I had to go to falsetto to hit them. (I'm more of a bass/baritone). Thank you Ken Tamplin for bringing me back this legend and all the memories that are related.

That woukd have been awesome. I really hope he can recover and come back next year for a summer tour. I was so excited to see Whitesnake on tour this summer but the damn flu froze everything in time. What an unfortunate event. Hopefully all the bs ends soon and we can all go back to enjoying rock concerts. I really, really hope so. I would love to see Whitesnake again. I love their music. I would say you covered the majority about David Coverdale in such a good way,
    I enjoy your videos.
I would say also that David conveys feelings and sensations in a really good way and the content of his songs also talk about love,
the great difficulty in love, pain and more...
So he is in addition to being such a diverse singer also a soul singer.
He is also one of favorite rock singers...
I think he has a special combination in his voice ... it's like hearing Robert Planet and Ronny James Dio in one voice.
If I could offer a song to sing... I would love to hear you sing "standing in the shadows of love" or "Aint gonna cry no more today".
also maybe one of the songs of survivor band like: "Burning heart" or "The eye of the tiger" :)
    Thank u for sharing :)

RUclips actually recommended one of your videos while listening to David's music, and that's how I rediscovered this channel. It amazes me how he has that deep, gritty, bluesy tone, and then he can just go up and reach those really high notes. It sounds like two totally different voices to me, but they come out of the same person. I also think he and Robert Plant sound really similar in the higher register, but they sound nothing alike in the lower register (David's voice is noticeably deeper), which I find interesting. He is certainly in the top tier of rock and metal singers all time. I think if I could have anyone else's singing voice, it would be his.

  • @ShayFeral

I've got a great story for you!
As a kid, and into my teens, I really wasn't much into music at all. I had songs I liked, but I didn't connect with them in the same way that I do now. It was all pretty much superficial, never really cared to listen to the lyrics; just rocked out, ya know? Hell, my favorite song at the time was Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' With Disaster" and I didn't know what the song was about; it was the intro song for NASCAR 98 for the Playstation and it just sounded fricken cool!
All this changed in 2004, I was 17 years old when I discovered Whitesnake. Although, it's kind of a half-truth; because I've heard them before on the radio, but before then it just didn't stick with me. The day music changed for me was when my then girlfriend broke up with me, I was heart broken. As the day progressed I developed an ear worm, the lyrics and tune "Here I go again on my own" got stuck in my head, and that's all that would just loop in my head over and over.
I got frustrated, I couldn't for the life of me figure out who it was, I didn't have a computer at the time so I hopped in my truck and drove to the library in town to look this up. It didn't take too long for me to find what I was looking for. After listening to the song a time or two I left the library and started walking back to my truck, now equipped with this knowledge. As I'm walking by my truck I pass by a thrift store and on whim I check it out. Immediately to my right was a rack of cassettes, I take a gander and it was like the music gods shined a light; because the very first cassette on the rack, very top left where I would begin my search; was the 1987 album.
Once I popped that into my truck's cassette player (I had an old '76 Chevy pickup) I was hooked and have been a big Whitesnake fan ever since.
In time I managed to work my way through their catalogue, from the Snakebite EP all the way to (at the time) Live in the still of the night! Although my introduction to Whitesnake was the "hair metal" era of Whitesnake, I've found myself connecting better with mostly pre-Slide it in tracks; Like "Walking in the Shadow of the Blues" being my favorite, and "Child of Babylon" and "Ain't Gonna Cry No More".
I love it all! The Restless Heart record, love it; David's solo albums from before Whitesnake, and Into The Light. His work in Deep Purple and with Jimmy page. Got it!
But it doesn't end there, Whitesnake opened me up to the blues in general. Hound Dog Taylor, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters.... lol You could say Whitesnake was my gateway drug!

Great stuff man!! PLEASE cover John Sykes. Both DC and Sykes really committed to not just great tone and phrasing but also to the emotional content and the passion of the piece. Great chops is always fun to listen to, but for me as a fan of these iconic artists, I believe that they perform from the gut and execute with conviction. I'll take passion over perfection all day, but these guys cover all the bases. As an example of Sykes really committing, Valley of the Kings and Jelly Roll off the first Blue Murder record are some of my favourites. I still have the urge to close the windows and crank these joints and bellow my brains out at fairly regular intervals. Thanks for the great content KT, and stay safe! :)

I have huge respect for you, Ken. I try to watch every video you post and I enjoy them a lot. Now... David Coverdale. He is my all-time favorite singer but only until 1984. After that he lost a lot of his bluesiness and individuality by losing his lower register and trying to copy Plant way too much. His voice until 1984 was amazing. Unfortunately, in my opinion his voice has been shot since 2002/2003. On the 2003 live DVD it is shocking to hear that his vocals are not live. I last saw him in 2008 and... let's say thanks to Timothy Drury ;-) He has been posting a lot of acoustic stuff on his FB page lately and it really hurts to listen to him. His pitch is all over the place. Still, I listen to everything he's done until 1984 almost religiously, in particular "NOrthwinds" and "Come And Get It".

BTW, DIO sing backing vocals on Gimme Kindness. Lovehunter is another underrated pearl. And Please, do Steve Marriot. The live version of Black Coffee.

When David was younger. Sorry, that’s what I think about, because his voice did change. Some singers are gifted with their voices staying forever young, sadly others keep singing but not as beautiful as when in their prime. Look at 70 year old John B. Who sang in Australia it sounded wonderful or Styx, Aerosmith, that scream is as fresh as when I was 18. 🤩I just heard the Backstreet Boys on the Jimmy Fallen show, each and every one of them sounded so fresh, their voices right on point. But I got to say David was one of my favorite singers, I still have his songs.

Loved it again Ken. Man, this guys tone is insanely good. He makes women want to be with him and guys want to be him. I wish I had an ounce of that tone. Seems like a bit of gent too.
    Awesome Ken, thanks.

Oh where do I start DC has been my all time favorite singer but when I hear him not only I loved the Deep Purple times but it was really when Saints & Sinners came out when I was hooked. Definitely the rock blues feel with the catchy beat and he has one of my best drummers in the world Mr. Tommy Aldridge I also love the feel of when he does a acoustic style Soldier of Fortune.

Thanks for this one, Ken. So David C is one of my vocal GODS. It's obvious that you're a trained singer. It's really cool how you tell us how David C does what he does. What I'm wondering is, does he know what he's doing, or does he just do it? You hear stories about legendary guitarists who "never had a lesson," so I'm wondering if a guy like David was trained, or if he just was born with that voice.
Thanks and have a great night

Love his old stuff too, love ain't no stranger and slide it in. I used to sing that with my old band. A voice you should profile is Ray Gillen he was singer of Badlands he passed away from Aids many years ago. Great powerfull voice similar to David Coverdale.

Sweet! Thanks again, Ken. David is one of my favorites of the 70's-80's era. I think the people that consider him a Plant knockoff have only heard a couple of his tunes, because he's no more so than anybody of the era. It was nice hearing a rich baritone voice in a time of high tenors. Like Dio, it set him apart.

Wahoo baby I've been waiting for this one. Have you checked out his videos that he does every single day over on Facebook? As much as he doesn't feel well because he needs surgery he is giving so much to his fans right now. That's why he's having a tough time singing because he needs that hernia operation.

Would love to hear you do a video on Michael Bolton. I know he's not a hard rock singer, but there's no denying his vocal capabilities. I've heard you talk a lot about "shedding the weight" as we navigate through the passagio; but in Bolton's case, he always seems to have that very heavy/thick sound up into his mix and head voice. Anyway, wonderful videos as always!

I appreciate how you included Lou Gramm as one of your all time favorites. Coverdale was hard for me like just because he replaced Gillan but his grittiness then ability to soar is really phenomenal therefore he has become a favorite of mine as well. Great guitarists, like you said, gravitate toward awesome singers because being born with those physical vocal characteristics is rare whereas being born with a musical ear and talent to learn an instrument is more common. Coverdale reminds me a lot of Cory Wells from Three Dog Night; I am sure Coverdale was a fan as well. To me, a singer's greatest attribute is his/her ability to hear melodies within the framework of a riff which is another reason, I would wager, Coverdale was able to surround himself with great players. A band is a team, after all. I'm sure Coverdale just started to sing after Blackmore played the first few bars of Soldier of Fortune, for example. Your nod to diaphragm support is another reason why I think David Byron should be on this series. Circle of Hands from Live 73 comes to mind as I type this but are so many others.

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Yessir! Another sample of her range would be a song called Jillian. I think that would be both amazing to see as well as get a lot of views for you. Amy Lee could be an obvious choice, but you’ll be surprised, I think when you check them out. Best wishes & stay healthy! Keep rockin’!
