David Coverdale has never gotten the credit he deserves as a song writer or a vocalists, seen him with Great White as there opening band, definitely the best overall show I've ever seen and having Steve Vai in the line up was awesome and so was Tommy Aldridge, the entire lineup was just incredible and professional, it was an absolutely amazing show, both bands came up for the enchore .
David Coverdale is my all time favourite singer too. The thing that attracts me most is his vocal style , he adds a bluesyness to his vocal licks and runs which sounds very sexy.
David coverdale is one of the best rock singers of all time definitely one of the best one of my favs Ken back then he had that awesome growling in his voice and those high screams he hits they rock he had such a awesome rock voice back then as he has gotten older he has lost it he can sing like he used to even though he has had voice problems and issues and has lost a lot he will always still be the best one of the best he still nailing those high screams as he has gotten older he nailed it what a voice David coverdale rocks and is awesome love him Ken 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Take this One down slow n easy Cousin.....this Man has special Rock n Roll Powers.....Vocal Power, Sweet High notes, n Grit in yer face!....DAVID...is this Love??......Another great Before and After....Thanks Ken
David is a God. I wasn’t a diehard fan when I was younger, but later I listened properly his music, and man, he’s a killer. What a class, what a tone, what an artist, and what a performer. Thank you again for your videos, a big hug from Spain.
I've always thought that David 's voice was amazing -especially on the legendary '87 album and Slip of the tongue. His singing voice however has deteriorated over the years - one must give him credit though as he's been at it for so long. One facet of David's that is *still* such a pleasure to listen to is his *speaking voice* - His ,timbre ,diction ,accent and mellifluous tone are wonderful. I'm sure he'd make a small fortune touring on a spoken voice circuit with an 'Audience with David Coverdale ' - he must've got hours worth of anecdotes !
David Coverdale vocally was at his peak around 1980/1981 Ready an’ Willing and Come an’ Get It...rich deep bluesy tone with a lot of soul....that’s why I love the classic snakes lineup of Coverdale/Marsden//moody/Murray and Paice....
So great to hear you speak the truth Ken, but alwyas in such an respectful and dignified way. David Coverdale could really go back in the day, i am a huge fan of that rock scream, it never gets old in my opinion. :)
I love watching Ken Tamplin videos he seems such a lovely man and one of the greatest singers ever, incredibly talented man . I showed my wife his videos and she is following him as well.
Glenn Hughes poped up in my mind when you talked about training your vocie. He really fits in on what your talking about in the begining. I saw him live in 2016 and 2018, and he really pulls it off great nowdays
Was never convinced by Coverdale's reinvention as a metal screamer. For me the real juice in in his tonal mid range. "Ain't no love,' We Wish you Well'.. Child of Babylon' .. peerless,.
Also just heard that he is doing his last tour & then retiring. He definitely had an amazing run! Some of the best rock vocal’s and some of the greatest rock song’s of all time!
David is one of the BEST singers EVER! I have the soft spot for him. He's got a fabulously amazing voice, and the lyrics of his songs are stunning! He's above praise, I lost my words! Ken, thnx a lot for the video! It is thorough and delicious as always!💕🤗🤗😘😘🎵🎸🤘😍
I too would like a Glenn Hughes then and now, as the man blows my socks off. Great insight and video on David Coverdale. I agree with you and everyone else that he had a great voice.
Yeah man! I love me some David Coverdale! I've always loved that husky, sexy rasp in his voice! He's got a bluesy kinda vibe & has voiced things in a beautifully soulful way. Excellent video, Ken & I'm learning the penultimate truth of how vital it is to take care of our vocal instrument!
Whitesnake is one of my favorite bands, loved them and David’s voice forever. On one of the many occasions that I got to see them, around 2004 or 05, he came out on stage with a cup of tea! After the second song he said, “So sorry, boys and girls, but I have a bit of a cold this evening.” He did the whole set and if anyone cared that he missed a few notes, I couldn’t tell from the audience reaction.
Ken you are right about David being inconsistent live on certain parts of songs. However folks have to keep in mind how hard some of this material is to sing. Very few people can sing this material well, especially live. Also adding the distortion...and soul that he has. And as you have said David is one of the all time greats!! This is a great video..really enjoyed your analysis. :)
Ken you are very knowable! Saw WS in 88 opened for Motley Cure on 4th of July and when WS played and was done it was MC turn to go ,it took about 3 songs before I could get into MC both were at there prime and on MTV often WS was on FIRE !! One if not the greatest open acts of all the shows I've been to.
David does not get NEARLY enough respect and praise on the mainstream! Hrs very underrated I feel. One of the best imo. Could you do one on SAMMY HAGAR Plz
Gosh, I keep forgetting he used to sing with Deep Purple back in the day. DP was the first real 'rock band' I recall seeing back in 1986. Unfortunately, David wasn't with them for that one. But I did get to see him with Whitesnake a few years later. He could really sing well back then. Obviously now it would be a different story, as your video here clearly shows. But who knows, maybe you could offer him some lessons before he goes on tour again for one last time. Great video though!
I like the second outtake better of the first set. On the second song comparison, hard to tell, although I like his tone more. On the third one,I'm hearing a good run in the closer to now one.. Oh I'm glad you brought up his 70's Deep Purple range vs. his 80's range. Yes I agree his range and control increased greatly. There are two factors going on behind the reason. One is that DP has spoken about wanting more of his steady baritone and the second reason I would only guess was as you've mentioned is that he consciously expanded his range considerably because he wanted a more dynamic fresh sound to his voice for the newer Whitesnake albums. And yes it is strikingly obvious compared to his 1970's vocals. Great episode!!
I love Coverdale. I remember getting the "Slide it In" album on cassette and driving to the beach rocking out to it. The power and range of his voice was inspiring to me, and then my singing journey started which eventually led me to Ken Tamplin. I've got a long ways to go, but I can tell a huge difference now from a couple months ago, and I'm slowly getting closer to doing the legends, like Coverdale, justice!
OK Ken. you do a great job with your program. After watching your bit on Dio I played some on my radio show. I love to hear a great rock voice. Keep up the good work. By the way I'm 78 and still singing.
That was great. I love David's voice. One of the legendary rock and metal vocalists. My suggestion... Graham Bonnet. Just heard one of his new tracks, and he's still an absolute powerhouse. Sounds like he has taken care of his voice.
David Coverdale is an amazing singer he is in one of my top 5 favs of all time. I know this may be out of your wheelhouse but I would like to see a then and now of Russel Hitchcock of air supply.
A lot of those vocals where DC doesn’t sing it’s the band (have seen the snakes many times live). As the years go by the band have been utilised a lot more - Reb is a good singer as heard on the Purple album. Still a legend and such an inspiration.
D.C. has such long singer career an all the time his voice sounds like baritone and tenor. Colour and power in it was really intensive and never lose his remarkable signs beside years, suffering and lose of optimum range in later years.
That whitesnake dvd (concert) from 2004 is one of the best "live" concerts I've seen on DVD or Video. Great capture of the band ...Tommy Aldridge is hands down my favorite rock drummer ! But Coverdale delivers on this concert one of the best captured whitesnake shows, if not the best! Yes im sure vocals are fixed in spots, but production wise its amazing !
Great comparison! I've always felt David is best when singing in his buttery smooth lower register, as opposed to trying to hit those Robert Plant highs. Definitely a force into the '80s. Great story I've heard Joe Elliott tell... While he was blowing his voice out during the PYROMANIA sessions, Coverdale was knocking out one-take vocals in the booth next door.
Coverdale had an amazing/epic voice. He really should have done some voice acting… can you imagine him singing/acting as a lion in The Lion King? It would be one for the ages. Another sing with a great voice for a character would be John Schlitt he has a very interesting voice. Of course Steven Tyler as well.
All you need to do is listen to any early Shout stuff particularly Borderline or Magdallan Big Bang. And then listen to the recent videos on this. Here is is a recent release of "Borderline" ruclips.net/video/eCLZdfsWxco/видео.html And here is the original album version. ruclips.net/video/Z5xXCkvcHZo/видео.html Here is a recent release of "Big Bang" ruclips.net/video/e8_iGB13ndw/видео.html and here is the album version ruclips.net/video/GAUZGWloGtw/видео.html (start at 35:02)
Awesome band ALDRICH of course but what about that Aldridge beast in drums !! So powerful. 🥁🥁🥁 Damn Ken, you nailed those notes.🤩 Talking about aging singers that still nails it, what about Huges. Still pretty good (teaming with Aldrich also)
Dave would be my choice for hard rock front man…hands down!!! Great vid Ken! How about Robin McAuley? Talk about someone who still brings it and is almost 70!!!
I think Steve Perry and Steven Tyler would be perfect for one of these even though wouldn't have much live stuff to go off of recently for Perry but defiantly newer studio recordings for him. Love these Ken, keep up the great stuff you are doing sir.
Loving this series, Ken, and your choices of who to cover has hit so many of my favorites, Coverdale and Dio being two who I’ve admired for decades now. Hmmm….what would be the possibility of seeing Michael Sweet in this series at some point? Keep rockin’ it, Ken!!!
I know you have a preference for heavy metal singers, but it would be interesting to analyze the then and now of Paul McCartney. And when I say "now", I mean the period from 2018 to 2022, because even in 2010-2015 he could sing the Beatles songs in the same key as the originals, with some changes in the color and brightness of his voice, but still sounded pretty good. In the latest years his voice lost its range dramatically. I remember reading a comment saying that "he lost his voice because he gave it all to his fans"... a sweet comment indeed, but I think Paul doesn't really care about the decline of his vocal quality. And like you say, it has nothing to do with aging. I know singers in their 80s, like Tom Jones, who still kick ass. In the case of Paul, I think it would be interesting to compare the evolution of his voice from The Beatles in the mid '60s and Wings in the mid '70s (there was a big change in that period, especially in his live performances), to nowadays in 2020s. I know that it would be a longer video, but it's a six-decade career. By the way... Paul is hitting the road back again this year!
Seems like in the last five years he's had some real issues. Do you think he could rehab his voice and get some of that killer tone back? A Glenn Hughes STAN would be fun! (Aldrich is a beast!)
Whitesnake keyboard player(Michelle Luppi) is a freaking amazing singer you should check him. For this series i would recomend to do Luis Miguel, there is a lot of footage and gonna get you some good views from latin america. Have a nice day Ken.
A real then and now would have painted a completely different picture of his vocal abilities (like you mentioned). The "now" clips from 2005 or so (?) are still really great, but I think about ten years ago he completely lost it. His singing nowadays is really hard to endure, it‘s more of a hoarse croaking. Don‘t want to talk bad things about David as he is one of my alltime favorite singers (he was incredible in his prime, that blues and soul in his voice, wow!), but his voice is completely shot nowadays. Sad but true.
Where the proof is in the singing. LOVE . you. .. True Gladiators n nights..amen3 9 22. Watching now. ;)blessings x10 singing family. Ps. Still of the night. David. Great notes n great ups n downs. LOVE the Aldridge
Ken, I would absolutely love for you to feature Tommy Shaw. His voice has really held up, however I value your opinion and would love to hear your thoughts. 💕
Whitesnake´s 1989 album Slip Of The Tongue was produced by Mike Clink and Keith Olsen. In Martin Popoff´s Whitesnake biography, Sail Away, one of the producers mentions that he used to record Coverdale early in the morning, because his voice would thin out during the day. If they recorded vocals during the afternoon, he would ask Coverdale to take a nap and then come straight back in to record his vocals, because that was when his voice sounded the fullest. Even his speaking voice has sounded quite thin in recent years, especially during laughter.
When Doug Aldrich joined Whitesnake around 2007-8, I think he rejuvenated David. On Good to be Bad & Forever More, David sounded great. Maybe the songs were written and structured for his vocal range at that time.
When David was on form, he was brilliant. I never really rated his big high notes though, I always thought he sounded best when he was hitting that absolute filth with his blues-rock voice. I would've loved to have seen him in his prime, saw WS in 2019 and the band carried him hard on the vocals as he was clearly struggling. Great performer, though, we won't see another one quite like him! I think with Doug in the band it'd date the footage to between 2006-14, would've loved to have seen that!
so tragic - David suffered a vocal chord edema back in 2009 and he never really recovered - a classic case of pushing your voice too hard without the necessary support, something Ken is always warning us against
Haha! Yeah it's funny. They hired a couple models to come and stand together and be in the camera shot. It's funny because in the old days I always thought it was true. You see an old rock video and there's no one in the audience but female models. When I listen to that '87 album, SOTT or anything earlier than that I just feel like he had to have sung it at least once for the recording. Also when I saw them live his voice sounded really cool. Even his speaking voice. So I'm a big fan. Love Whitesnake. I always will.
Actually, if I may… those latter day Whitesnake clips were from the 2006 live dvd which was a show recorded in 2004… so a bit more “recent” and in my estimation makes it more impressive. Comparatively, you were referring clips from the ‘95 Page and Plant tour for Robert Plant… who incidentally only sang Black Dog in entire high pitch in in I believe the first live performance of it, ‘71 maybe? He was ducking those same notes even back when he was singing in that upper register. So kudos to Coverdale… I believe he injured his voice and just really hasn’t rehabilitated it appropriately since. So if you haven’t done so already, would love you to STAN these guys: Burton Cummings, Lou Gramm, Roger Hodgeson, Mickey Thomas, and Steve Perry! Thank you as always, Ken!
David is in my opinion the definition of a Rockstar.
One of my all time fave rock voices of the 80s.
DAVID COVERDALE IS THE BEST VOCAL IN ROCK OF ALL TIMES! AND A GREAT SONGWRITER AND FRONTMAN! SECOND TO NONE!
Love his voice. High notes without losing that masculine character and great bluesy tone, a voice I'd love to emulate and endless respect for.
Unbelievable vocalist. He never had the best technique, but his power and vocal tone was out of this world!! 👌
Take this One down slow n easy Cousin.....this Man has special Rock n Roll Powers.....Vocal Power, Sweet High notes, n Grit in yer face!....DAVID...is this Love??......Another great Before and After....Thanks Ken
Love daves voice. Age hasn't slowed him down! Had a great bluesy sound.
By far!
Coverdale is one of the best rock vocals, hands down. I have enjoyed listening to him over the years.
David is a God. I wasn’t a diehard fan when I was younger, but later I listened properly his music, and man, he’s a killer. What a class, what a tone, what an artist, and what a performer.

Yay!! Awesome. Thank you for posting. Amazing singer still.

Agreed. His best album is Northwinds imo.
Also just heard that he is doing his last tour & then retiring.
He definitely had an amazing run!
Some of the best rock vocal’s and some of the greatest rock song’s of all time!
Ken always has the best insights
Love David then and now. He is really a rock star.
Thanks Ken!!
Long live rock and roll ✌️❤️🎼
Nice work Ken. David Coverdale is a giant in the singing world. Top 5 for sure!
Ken you are adorably nice! Not cynical or world weary. You have a true love of music!💋
I too would like a Glenn Hughes then and now, as the man blows my socks off. Great insight and video on David Coverdale. I agree with you and everyone else that he had a great voice.
David Coverdale is absolutely outstanding!!!!! Such an inspiration for me!!!!!
I saw Whitesnake live in 2005 and they were incredible! 🤘🤘
David Coverdale was awesome in Deep Purple. Love the Mk III and Mk IV lineups.
Excellent job on this vid, Mr. Tamplin! Can't wait to see a Glenn Hughes 'Then and Now'. ☺️
David is one of the best blues rock singers ever. I always felt he got slighted with the comparisons to Plant.
Great vid.No word, Dave was such an amazing singer back then.
Ken you are right about David being inconsistent live on certain parts of songs. However folks have to keep in mind how hard some of this material is to sing. well thats pretty good. TY Ken

Your spot on Ken in regards to his Purple Era and Whitesnake 80s! To very different sounds vocally and I'm much more a fan of the 80s whitesnake.
Loving the "STAN" video series 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Would love to see Eric Martin of Mr. Big.

Great episode!!

I was never a fan of his, but I do learn from your Then and Now's. Thanks for doing these.
David Coverdale always sounded like he had just finished a pack of Marlboros before recording his parts 😂
OK Ken. you do a great job with your program. After watching your bit on Dio I played some on my radio show.
I love to hear a great rock voice. Keep up the good work. By the way I'm 78 and still singing.
Don Dokken would be a good subject for this series, always loved his voice.
Hello, David Coverdale!! Te admiro y me encantas por tu linda voz tu rock tan maravilloso..!! Muchos cariños !!!

I appreciate that!
I like Davids vocals , has a bluesy feel to them , love to see vids of Paul Staley and Jack Russell
SO SHWEEEETTT...much love Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO.[the music worldwide}
and ooo the DAVE!!!...great job!
Hey Ken, good to see you brother. I love watching these videos. I definitely can't sing and don't even try even when I'm alone lol.
D.C. has such long singer career an all the time his voice sounds like baritone and tenor.
Saw White Snake in the late 1980’s in Irvine California. They were absolutely killing it.
Ни фига не понимаю по английски, но все равно большое спасибо❤️Обожаю Дэвида Ковердейла, он мой любимый рок вокалист❤️😊
Йес Итыз!)

Quick comment.. burn .. David , Glenn ... One of my favs.. thanks Ken !
Mine too!
This is one I’ve had on my mental list for you.
"Because I know how to do it!" Just a classic line there Ken, made me really laugh!
Coverdale had an amazing/epic voice. He really should have done some voice acting… can you imagine him singing/acting as a lion in The Lion King? It would be one for the ages. Tommy Shaw of Styx would be great to see then vs now
David rocked his butt off!
Can we see a Ken Tamplin then and now. I think that would be cool. Maybe just a little throwback during one of your videos.

Love the affect on your voice Ken!
Absolutely love DC.....my request would be if you could make a Chris Cornell (R.I.P) Then and now.
Love your vids man.
Outstanding!
Awesome band ALDRICH of course but what about that Aldridge beast in drums !! So powerful. 🥁🥁🥁
Damn Ken, you nailed those notes.🤩

I know that it would be a longer video, but it's a six-decade career. By the way... Paul is hitting the road back again this year!
Love Dave Coverdale😎🌟❤️🎼🎼👍
Seems like in the last five years he's had some real issues.
Do you think he could rehab his voice and get some of that killer tone back?
A Glenn Hughes STAN would be fun! (Aldrich is a beast!)
If he rest yes.
If he reintroduce the 1978-1983 material , yes.
If i judge the acoustic version he did on Blindman in Quarantine , i would say yes .
the song burn "now" was around mid 2000's 2010 in London..
I never knew he sang for deep purple at the start of his career. Incredible coming from them going into Whitesnake.
You should fast track one of these for the Tears for Fears guys as they their voices have aged spectacular
Whitesnake keyboard player(Michelle Luppi) is a freaking amazing singer you should check him. For this series i would recomend to do Luis Miguel, there is a lot of footage and gonna get you some good views from latin america. Have a nice day Ken.
Awesome series. Being half as good as these singers you illustrate would be satisfying for me. Looking forward to your take on James Taylor.
You seem to have some echo on your sound Ken…..but great video again, love David, he’s THE singer as far as I’m concerned!
It happens.
Ken you’re the best!
Did you like saints & sinners which had a blues feel. Hear I to again , crying in the rain
He’s from the next village to me. Often seen visiting 😊♥️
Great video as usual Ken!
so tragic - David suffered a vocal chord edema back in 2009 and he never really recovered - a classic case of pushing your voice too hard without the necessary support, something Ken is always warning us against
I'm wating to see the analysis of Ian Gillan \o/ since his voice changed so much as he got old
PROOF 🙏 KEN 😍👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️ FANTASTIC 👌🙋🎤🎸
🎸🎤😍
David Coverdale and Paul Rogers are from the same town in England... called Middlesbrough. Produce great singers.
