What Makes This Singer Great? Ian GIllan - Deep Purple
Ian Gillan's music was for me, truly the cornerstone of rock and roll.
His style was both legendary and innovative and he pioneered the use of low, growly vocals paired with super high range screams.
Originally influenced by Elvis Presley, Ian fronted multiple bands before eventually joining on with Deep Purple.
He enjoyed a lot of commercial success with the band before deciding to branch off on his own and do some solo projects and a stint with Black Sabbath.
Eventually he would rejoin Deep Purple for two more albums before leaving again in 1989. 4 years later he returned to the band and has remained the frontman ever since.
In addition to his music, Ian also took on the role of Jesus in the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar and his performance of "Gethsemane" is one of my favorites.
For today's video I'll be looking at a series of epic performances of some of his classics. I hope you enjoy it and please make sure to share what you thought made Ian great!

I love that theatrical quality to Gillan's vocals. You can tell just how influential he was to the evolution of heavy metal music. I think he's a good singer to show people who may not "get" heavy metal music or think it's all senseless noise, because I'd consider him one of the founding fathers of the heavy metal sound and his skill is absolutely undeniable.

Ian Gillan is my favorite singer, period. (Plus he's HOT!). He can sing everything- of course, he's the best in classic rock, but, like you said, he's amazing in JCSS- not only the rock, but the ballads. He really gets the energy of the song across. Multifaceted, supremely talented, just exquisite. No one can compare.

For Me Deep Purple is like My blood, My family. When i'm know that somebody likes deep purple I instantly develope a simpathy for that person. That is why I like You Ken. Even though You clearly prefer Coverdale than Ian Gillan, wich for me (let me tell you) is almost a blasphemy. But we Will forgive You. I think there is one thing which is quite understated. IG simply is NOT and never was about screaming. I mean - it was one of his trademark, but the main quality of his voice was and still is beautiful tone of voice. You have to go before Purple and Jesus Christ Superstar and listen tracks done with Episode Six. Then go to When A Blind Man Cries…. and listen to more mellow stuff he has done with his voice. I just guess how many Purple fans heard If I Sing Softly or his live take of Sitting In A Dream (when he performed on Butterfly Ball show instead RJD). From later period - who heard Over & Over or If This Aint Blues from Hoochie Coochie Men album with Jon Lord - both are absolute vocal masterpieces from 2007....

I believe Ian Gillan is the greatest rock singer of all time! The one thing he has that stands above the rest... and yes I love Dio, Mercury, Hughes, Coverdale and a lot more .... is his versatility! With that I mean, his was able to sing many different genres. From Jesus Christ Superstar to Born Again, Black Sabbath and anything in between. He absolutely had a go at everything. I can give you many examples but this comment would go on forever. There is prob one singer that can still sing the same now at the age of 68 than when he was young and that is Mr Glenn Hughes. However as far as tone, phrasing, timing, nuances, range, emotivity, versatility, Mr Ian Gillan takes the cake. He covered genres like, hardrock, rock and roll, blues, blues rock, metal, heavy metal, crooning (ala Bublé, Sinatra), jazz fusion, even had a go at opera. I prob missed a couple. Absolutely underrated singer. On top of that he is an amazing songwriter and lyricist. There you are. You can agree or not.

  • @ronricherson6685

Ian was and is his own man with his own style and he just went for it every time. I saw him years ago in Denver and he was sick with a bad cold, turning away from the mic to cough and such, without complaining or so much as a comment. Remarkable. I was actually at the California Jam in '74 when Coverdale and Hughes were the new guys. As famous as that gig was and as good as the new guys were for Deep Purple, the crowd was really not into them as much without Ian Gillan. Ian Gillan took Deep Purple from being a band searching for a sound and identity to an international phenomenon. Without him, DP would have been (nearly) forgotten. I say "nearly" because of "Hush."

  • @terrydickinson3296
    @terrydickinson3296 4 года назад +11

Ian Gillan very rarely left anything in the dressing room, good night or bad a very honest performer . In his second purple period 1984 onwards I think he would have benefited from backing singers to help him breath after the difficult bits . He did a lot more singing 84 onwards , the shows were longer and the instrumental passages shorter. I think he has said he wasn't happy with his mid range until he reached his 50s.

One thing I really appreciate about Gillan, is his ability to sing lightly so well in full voice that sounds falsetto but it's not. He did that often in JCS, his version of Sitting in a Dream (Butterfly Ball), and especially in IGB and Gillan. He is my favorite rock singer. No one could have done Digital Bitch better, for example. I still beseech you to do a David Byron analysis. Cheers!

I have always loved Ian's voice. His vocals on Black Sabbath Born Again were pushed to the limit, to the point of almost being painful to hear at times. I think he had a somewhat nasal quality to his singing, especially the 80's and 90's, but it gave him identity and seemed to work well. His modern approach is more toned down, but he still maintains character and sounds quite distinguished.

I’m sure Blackmore was a huge influence on most guitar players. I know Paice was one of mine on the kit. 40 years later and I still can’t keep up to his stamina. Sorry but I’ve mostly ignored a lot of vocals, I listen more to band behind them.😜

He had his golden voice when he left deep purple the first time. I am sorry to say that somewhere between Igb (Ian Gillan band) and black Sabbath and before his return to purple, with the Perfect Strangers album, he must have injured his voice. He had lost his range in perfect strangers and he had a raspiness to his voice that he never had before. Good album, but to my ear he had lost that incredible range and tone that made him the best male singer I have ever heard.

"He set this trend" - KT Absolutely, while many imitate those before them or their peers, Gillan imitates no one, a true original rock legend. His lyrics are funny as hell too. Listen to No One Came from Fireball, or Ted the Mechanic, great lyrics.

I spent a lot of time trying to copy him live and did a fair impression and believe me it paled into insignificance against this tremendous vocalist and entertainer. His version of Gethsemene is phenomenal. In his earlier days he was an Elvis/Gene Vincent inspired rock N roller and pop singer
On a personal note I've had the odd brief backstage moment around Purple and have a high regard for Ian as a person..Never afraid to publicly admit he made mistakes in his professional and business life too. I thank him on behalf of Rock fans and music lovers generally for all he has brought to the scene

Hey look it's Keningham Rex Maximum Vocalus!!
Bro, my late brother Jim saw Gillan live years back in Toronto, and he said he could see Gillan going back stage from his perspective, and he was taking oxygen between songs (not between each song) Have you heard this ?
My vocal style (not sound) is very similar to this, and RJ Dio employed the same technique. I just love the atmosphere these great singers brought ti each and every last song!
You just don't see male vocalists who can bring that kind of power, the drama and ability to captivate every single bum warming every single seat on every song!
Even the best bands have songs which just fall flat, and a lot of the time it's on the vocalist, he has no vocal charisma (as opposed to physical, Elvis type charisma)
At the beginning of my career the biggest problem I had when I was transitioning from covers to originals was the band's inability to comprehend they had to write for the vocalist! Guitar players are the worst blockheads for this. They all want to be superheroes and it's speed, no discernible melody and volume.
I got so disgusted with this that I started bring Sabbath Dio and old Rainbow cassettes (yes folks, the horrifying truth is out I am an old sumbitch at fiddy seven) I had to make them put their effing guitars down, and if you ask me, guitar players look at their guitars as an extension of their tiny Joe Johnson...it's pure penis envy!
When you hear "metal" a lot of people think of speed, smoking finger boards and outrageous ear drum shattering volume.
But when forced to listen to the GODZILLAS of hard rock (told you I'm old!) such as Iomi, Blackamoor, Viv Campbell, Goldie, Slash etc look, Iomi created metal, sophisticated metal. These giants wrote for their vocalist they left riffs out of vocal parts and inserted them in and out and through the choruses when appropriate.
You can have the very best musicians and vocalist and your band can be complete crap, because singers cannot compete with amps on the 11 settings! Vocals are destroyed like that.
So singers, if you're dealing with blockheads suffering with penis envy find another band because they can replace broken string, they can get new guitars, they can swap pickups YOU HAVE ONE VOCAL CHORD AND ONCE IT'S DAMAGED IT'S OVER!
Love to get Ken's perspective. Take care brother!

Remember the 70s my brother an me were sitting in front of his record player in his child's room and listened to this number. We had the "Made in Japan" and couldn't believe what these guys were doing. My cousins came to my confirmation in Germany when I was 13, and we turned up the speaker full volume and listened to Deep Purple. No other band has changed our musical live in such a way than Purple. I wanted to play absolutely Organ in a band because of John Lord. And Ian Gillan inspired all of us. Also Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice. My mother was shocked when I had my first electric guitar with 14, cause the first thing I bought from confirmation money was a big amplifier and electric guitar. We started a band project in school and were stars at our school, cause we covered a lot of Purple, Stones, The Who and Beatles. This were really good times. Hot girls and a lot of fun. And I think, we have had a lot of luck, that we were allowed to see such big bands in the 70s. Young people today cannot imagine that all these big bands (Led Zeppelin, Boston, Kansas, Eagles, Manfred Man, Whitesnake a.s.o.) brought a completely new style into music. Thank you Ken for honoring Ian!
