3.0L Diesel FIX - Radiator Fan Stuck On High? Used Block Heater? 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Duramax

  • I wanted to create this video as I struggled with this issue for a couple days... basically, i plugged in the engine block heater on my Sierra 3.0 Diesel Duramax and it caused the ECU to flip a code, or made the ECU think the truck was in danger of overheating and basically the radiator fan went on full blast, every time i started the truck and wouldn't stop. So the fan was stuck on high and wouldn't turn off unless I turned off the truck... frustrating. My truck didn't pop an actual code or pop the check engine light, but some reported that it did, so in your case, if you did pop a code, be sure to clear it prior to disconnecting battery. Or you can try clearing it and then let the truck sit overnight, though I don't know if that will work.
This bug caused my truck not to get up to temperature and I had no heat in the truck so it wasn't fun. If you want to avoid this issue, don't use your engine block heater unless it is below zero while plugged in and started. I figured out how to fix it after trying a few things (disconnect the battery for a little while) but here is the permanent fix for those who are going to get service from GM soon:
    gm-techlink.com/?p=12389
Here is what GMC has to say about it and the permanent fix:
Some 2020 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 models equipped with the 3.0L diesel engine (RPO LM2) (Fig. 12) may have the engine cooling fans running continuously for an extended period of time. The Check Engine MIL also may be illuminated.
Currently, an engine calibration in the Engine Control Module (ECM) will falsely set DTC P0111 (Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 1 Performance), which occurs when the engine block heater is used in ambient temperatures above 0°F/-18°C. As a result, the cooling system will go into remedial action and turn on the cooling fans at 100%. The remedial action will continue until the engine goes through a six hour cold soak.
If this condition is found, clear the DTC and return the vehicle to the customer. Do not perform any further diagnosis or replace any related components. An updated calibration will be available shortly.
Also inform the customer to avoid engine block heater use in temperatures above 0°F/-18°C. While the owner’s manual states an engine block heater should be used in temperatures less than 0°F/-18°C, it isn’t vital until much lower temperatures of less than -13°F/-25°C.

I don’t use a block heater on mine and my truck started doing this a few months ago. Just disconnected the negative side for 15-20 and it worked! Engine light off now and the fan isn’t going at light speed anymore! Thanks! Hopefully it stays this way and I don’t have to do this constantly lol

@@BustMonk I wish I could say it lasted lol it made it half the day before it all started doing the same shit again 🤦‍♂️ then randomly this week, check engine light goes away and the fans are normal for 2 days. Now it’s back to being the most annoying thing ever lol

I have 2023 gmc Sierra 1500 with same engine, today my fan have same issue, working non stop with 25 degree outside. Drove it dealerships and no appointment’s one week in advance, they don’t have loaner car me and don’t even know if I can drive home like that. Paying $1500 monthly and not even deserve drive loaner car😢😢. Decide drive one hour home like that and was very disappointed with this car which is not even two months old and have this issue. Arrived home and checked google what guys say’s about this type of issue and found your video, honestly not been sure if it’s will work for me but decided to try, why not? Disconnected negative wire like you said and left it about 45 min and miracle happened it working properly. Thank you so much for posting it.

2023 Silverado RST with the 3.0 LZO durmax. Plugged the truck in overnight when the weather said it would be 3° next morning started it and the fan turned on full blast and ran everytime the truck was on. Driving or not. Disconnecting the battery for 20 mins solved this issue. I won't be plugging the truck in until its like -10° or so. Thanks for the information. You earned a like and subscribe.

Great fix man! I had a P2CBB show up in my ‘21 Sierra Duramax yesterday and it gave me the countdown of miles before it limited my speed. DEF was full but I did notice the radiator fan was roaring. I disco’d the battery and walla fixed. Great advice.

According to GM, you really don’t need to plug it in until -13°F even though the manual says 0°F and below. Good to know. Glad I saw your video before our Yukon w/ 3.0 Dmax comes in. Fortunately The weather usually doesn’t go below 0°F where I live.

Thanks man, sucks that we even need to do this on a new vehicle, but my 2021's fan is back to normal after disconnecting and re-connecting. Mine really doesn't like cold weather..only issues I've had pop up are when we hit lower than -25 celcius up here in the great white north. Cheers and thanks again for the info!

I have a 23 with 1100 miles on it and the fan started running non stop this morning. It's at the dealer now. I had no engine light on but dealer stated a code was stored for EGT sensor. Curious, did your issue come back in time after the fix of disconnecting the neg. terminal?

I’ve had this happening on and off for about 6 months. They just found that the Coolant Control Valve needs replaced and should be available by June.. Today my truck just started leaking coolant (crack in the radiator on a seam). Also back ordered.
