2020 Silverado 1500 Duramax - 1st Check Engine Light!!! (Part 1)

  • 2020 Chevrolet Silverado with 3.0l Duramax Diesel threw it's first check engine light this a couple of days ago and I have been looking into what the fault is and showing what you might see if you get a similar "Service Emissions System" fault....
    I show what the driver information screen shows when the fault occurs and since this is a little bit intermittent at the moment I have video of when it clears up and then the next morning it's back again. I do clear the code and take a look at the data coming from the system via my EFILive unit just to see if I can capture the true fault. P20BB is the registered, now historical fault and I'm going to see how quickly the dealership can get me in since the fault could limit my speed to 65mph in only 175 miles....

    My brand new 2023 suburban with the 3.0 Duramax has given me this code 4 times and cost me so much time off work taking it into the dealer it's ridiculous. I promised my wife this is the last time. If it comes back again I'm calling a lawyer. Same issues. Error, no remote start, emission issue error. Maybe 500 miles total in the 2 month old vehicle and so much headaches I swear. Regret trading in the 4Runner to get this POS.

      Sorry to hear about your issue. Do you know what emissions code you are getting? I might be able to help in getting to the root cause of the issue even though you shouldn't need too...

    I had this code last year in Feb. The heating element in the DEF tank fails and every time the truck cycles to start up, it sees that issue and even though DEF may not be frozen, it still will put the truck in limp mode. I learned this because I was 500mi from home on a trip (truck had 1200mi on it), so I asked them if they could just bypass the issue so I could continue to drive, it will go deeper into limp mode is what I was told. Eventually you’d be at about 30mph.
    There were no parts available in Canada at the time, my truck was stranded at a dealership for almost 10 days waiting to be completed.
    If you want more info, let me know.

      Thank you for the details and sorry to hear about your troubles. I'm working on part 2 this evening and it will be for sure at least 3 or 4 parts by the time it gets resolved. After clearing my code it went away, even the history one is now gone. I expect it to come back so I'm logging data to see when/why it fails and I'm going to try and figure out how I can make it home from a long trip before stopping at a dealership. That is now my goal... I hate the thought of getting stranded for 10 days somewhere, maybe our warranty should include travel insurance too?? I will keep everyone posted and maybe if I do have a total failure it would be good to compare notes. Thanks for watching.

      @@CJIEngineering I had taken a church youth group on a retreat, and the dealership had no loaners for me. It was a smaller city we were in, and a Saturday morning, all car rental places were closed. I spent multiple hours in the phone with GM and finally got a rental through them... only catch was that it was an hour drive away.so I had to pay for a cab out of my own pocket to get there. GM has an odd rental policy too. They’ll only cover the cost of a rental if it’s a GM product, so you could get stuck in other cities that don’t have. GM product available.

    Def doesn’t freeze until -11c so I don’t understand why the heater comes on so soon.
    I been thinking about issues like this also as I like to pull my travel trailer during the summer.
    And I don’t want to have my truck stuck at a dealership for days or weeks on end.
    The horror stories of dealers not able to repair the issue in a timely way is all over the internet.
    So being able to continue driving is very important.......
    8 or 9 amps is normal for a heater running at 12 volts.

    • @CJIEngineering
      @CJIEngineering  3 года назад

      I really don't understand it either but the DEF does warm up to 2-3C and then the heater shuts off. I'm thinking that is where they think there is no chance that the DEF will freeze in the lines going up to the injector. I was also able to capture the pump running in reverse pulling the DEF back into the tank once the truck was shut down so the lines are empty when it is close to freezing out. Still has not come back so I'm continuing to test....

Do it a couple times. I have not had a problem again. I also have high idle switch it does not work to blow out the def. I have a couple of questions for you. 1. Do you know what code you received? 2. Have you had all of the over the air updates done on your truck? You have the LZ0 engine in your truck and during the break in period you might get emissions performance low codes. There is a break in period for the catalyst that does seem to fix itself but there was also supposed to be an update to make it happen less often/hopefully never. I would be more than happy to look into it if you have a few more details you can share.

    Just an FYI I've had multiple newer vehicles where they disable the remote start when you have an engine code, so it's not just this truck, or the fact that it is a diesel. I've also lost cruise control in a BMW when the low tire pressure light had come on. I can appreciate the cars being intelligent and trying to prevent you from doing something dangerous or detrimental to the health of the vehicle, but I really think it's a bit much in some cases. I discovered that my Denali has the fan issue when the block heater gets plugged in. I thought they had fixed this issue, but I guess either that is not the case, or mine wasn't quite new enough. I cleared it with my code reader and will mention it on the next oil change.

    Watching your truck's issue closely, my truck has had DEF related emissions CEL since new (first time during test drive @ 55 miles before delivery) , in fact the same messages as your having now, twice in the last 1000 miles and my truck only has ~4.000 miles on it!
    I'm currently waiting on parts from my dealer again and can share RO's when I get it repaired, I love my LM2 but this has been my 5th CEL in 4,000 miles and BTW... I noticed as you did that my remote start won't work when my emission related CEL is lit, but the the cruise control did work. One more observation my highway MPG did drop 10-15% when I get the CEL message after the dealer reset my CEL the last time my MPG returned to 30 MPG highway for the first road trip of 100 miles or so? I think it's all related to the DEF system and hope the dealer can find the correct solution soon before i go on any long road trips this Summer! Thanks again for posting it may help many other owners and encourage GM Engineering to focus on this issue which plaques some LM2 engines.

    Great video. I've been watching as I was considering bying one. Unfortunately this is now what we all face as diesel owners, unless you want to chance and delete. I currently own a 2017 F-250 diesel and worry about similar problems. I use the best oil, filters, fuels additives, get fuel from same high turn over station etc. I ALWAYS drive the entire regeneration cycles, monitor dpf percentage of fullness (by 2 monitors), so I can plan ahead. I always idle down, truck never shut off until exhaust temps are under 375...and still, using your scenario, you could be stuck on the road with camper in tow. As a guys who always had diesels and love them, I have decided to go to a gas powered truck just to avoid these potential emissions issues. I tow 10K or less, so gas will be ok. I will very much miss the power, mileage, smell, the feel, the sound etc. But not all the garbage that comes with owning a modern diesel. I wish you luck

    That is disappointing. I can relate with the long distance travel with few dealerships along the route. I travel nearly 2500 miles one way on a recreation trip I take annually. The route is very rural, no dealerships for half that distance. I've been thinking of the 3.0L diesel, the benefit of fuel economy but I'd be stuck getting the truck serviced along the way if something should occur that needed immediate repair. Most of my trips are during winter months, very cold temps and that also would cause even more anxiety. I will stick with my 6.2L for now. My issue with the 6.2L is the lack of availability of premium fuel for a thousand miles and few communities on my travels. Btw, I'm towing then as well. I appreciate the video.

      Thank you for commenting. I'm really hoping I can find a way to clear these types of messages to get you through a trip. It would be nice if you could buy emissions credits in a pinch to get you through. Maybe someone a the EPA is going to read this and help us out. Electric trucks I'm sure are the future but I'm pretty sure both of us would be totally screwed trying to go and see stuff, maybe that is the goal????? It still blows my mind that every other gasoline engine can run for it's entire life with that little light on but I can't go 175 miles. Sorry to rant but I wish we could find a solution.

    This Check Engine light just came on a few days ago! “Service Emission System... 175 mi Until…” I've had my 2020 3.0l Duramax since February 2020 and I have about 27K miles on it. I immediately started investigating it and I found this channel. I live in Texas and it’s currently in the mid to upper 90’s here. My DEF tank is about 85% full and it’s definitely not cold outside so I can automatically have to rule out that it’s not the DEF heat pump. I was due for an oil change, was at 14% left, so I took it to the dealership the following morning. I told them this issue. They plugged in their eAdvisor gizmo and the DTCs read “B101D - Electronic Control Unit Hardware” and “P20BB - Reductant Heater “A” Control Circuit Low”. They could not fix the issue because “I needed to make an appointment for this service”. I get it and understand that, but at the same time they probably wouldn’t have the parts to fix it and they truck would still be at the dealership. As of right now, the truck is running as it should but the remote start has been disengaged. Assuming from the previous comments and threads, it’s supposed to deactivate if there’s a code/check engine light on. I’m scheduling an appointment for this Friday. Has anyone else experienced this issue yet? Stay tuned...

    This stinks. I had an error code (P26C0) that showed up for about an hour in October. I pulled immediately over and hit the OnStar button. They told me the code and said that it was safe to drive (because the check engine light was solid and not blinking) and that I should take it to a dealer ASAP. It went away within an hour and never returned. I took it to the dealer and they said that they couldn't do anything with a code. It's been several month and a few thousand miles since without any issues. I pray I don't see any more codes on this thing. On a side note, are we getting that engineer video anytime soon? • @CJIEngineering
      @CJIEngineering  2 года назад

      Well kind of... I was reading, if the DEF tank is low, this particular error could be thrown by the reductant (DEF) controller. I'm able to read the current on both of the elements and after I filled the tank I haven't had the problem. It also will be thrown if the temperature is under 45F, above that these heaters don't run so the error will never pop. I'm hoping it doesn't happen this winter but if it does I'll make sure I post another "fix" video. Thanks for asking.

    • @CJIEngineering
      @CJIEngineering  2 года назад +1

      So any emission related fault will cause the fans to go full speed and get at a minimum a check engine light and sometimes the DEF light. I have had one other check engine light that caused this to happen. I'm hoping to catch what is causing it so I can get if fixed. The dealership needs to reproduce the error and they were not able to last week. I'm hoping it was a fluke but in the next few days I'll find out after the next Regen.

    • @CJIEngineering
      @CJIEngineering  3 года назад +1

      DEF does not freeze till 12F so I'm not sure why they are heating it around 25F maybe a precaution. The DEF does get pulled back into the tank when temperatures are low and the truck is shut off. It will thaw it out and then pump it up front to be injected. Plugging it in does not warm that tank, only the block has a heater. Still more tests to run to get the process mapped out. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Chad quick question. I’m new to diesels (LM2)and recently received my banks 1.8 super gauge. In your opinion what should I be monitoring on my daily drive as far as parameters? And when I’m towing my travel trailer what are some parameters to be keeping an eye on? This banks 1.8 gauge looks awesome and kinda overwhelming as far as what you can monitor. Coming from a gas Tacoma and not hauling or towing anything I could give two craps about what was going on as long as the gas was good. Any helps much appreciated

    • @CJIEngineering
      @CJIEngineering  3 года назад

      Thanks for the question. So the most important thing to watch all the time is the Regen State. I don't have a Banks Super Gauge or Data Monster yet :) so I'm not sure what parameters they can really show. Regen is important for the fact that the EGT2 will be high and EGT1 would be elevated while the truck is cleaning the Diesel Particulate Filter and I always let mine cool down before shutting it off. EGT1 should be under 500F, others may say higher or lower but that's a nice round number. I also like to look at the Boost all the time but Banks has a better universal value MAD, Manifold Absolute Density, this is a combination of air temperature, boost, and ambient pressure. It will give you a relative value for how much power you can make with the motor. If you tow in the mountains it would be cool to see how much you really loose. Other things that I like to see are the DEF consumption to see how long you can expect to go between fill ups. The built in gauge sucks to be kind. More on that in another video that I'm still producing. So probably: MAD, Boost, EGT1, Load would be nice to see all the time. Thanks for the question and keep me posted on how you like the gauge :)

    you good sir have my attention imma go dig in some GM data bout the def tank heater and parts out of curiosity...
    but honestly reading the code what tells you is basically the module sees an open circuit or high resistance in the heater activation circuit, given it can pull its 9 amps comfortably im left thinking what control method it uses: is it a external relay or a transistor/internal relay switching inside the module?
    -> given its a external relay you just need to look for the 85-86 pin on the relay and check the contacts as one may had come loose or have crud packed in it, maybe even the relay couldve gone bad.
    -> if its the transistor/internal relay then it may very well be a cracked solder joint inside the module thats giving you a hard time or a faulty transistor/relay... OR a loose connector somewhere around the def tank...
    if my brain works right and what i learned in all these years in electricity and automotive electronics in school isnt lies i shouldnt be far off the truth... i think.. maybe its just a programming issue affecting cold climates only and they just oversighted the chance of the activation circuit taking longer than a second in due instances...
