I always wondered why the designers didn’t put Dany in red more often; considering the Targaryen banner is a red dragon on a black field.
In my opinion It was all apart of making her seem different from Targaryens that came before. Not everything was “fire and blood” despite her having to use that as a threat when need be. She used her dragons to free slaves unlike her ancestors which were known for enslavement.
Once we see Daenerys in Westeros and she’s not embraced with love she resorts to her house words “fire and blood”. Now Daenerys is wearing costumes that reflect her taking a darker turn. We see a lot of charcoal, black and some red.
It’s a very harsh and sudden display. In Essos she’s wearing these blues, light pinks and whites. Then all of a sudden she’s in these dark colours. Another reason why so many fans found the plot turn so jarring. From her music, clothing, constant praise everything pointed at her character being an angelic goddess.
I guess what I’m trying to say is she dressed differently because she had a different upbringing from her ancestors. She didn’t know there style, she had no access to house Targaryens wardrobe and they’re trying to show that.
Probably because dany the whole show was supposed to divert the targaryen path
Blue was the colour of Drogo's horde!
Black is also the color of the targaryen,in HOTD some targaryens will be called "the blacks".
Seeing the costumes from the later season in decent lighting is so refreshing. So much of the detail and care was lost because of how dark 7 and especially 8 were. I think Dany's costumes are some of the greatest tv costuming work I've ever seen. They're not just beautiful but also show so much character
How on earth could you talk about that amazing winter coat for so long and never show or comment on the back?!? That certainly was a “moment” when she turns around with the reveal to mount her dragon. ❤️

I just love how they can display her story through her clothing. From the Dothraki earth colours that bring out her more gritty/do anything to survive personality. To her being at the top of the pyramid in these whites and various shades of blue. The darker colours while on Dragonstone to reflect her darker choices. Then the return of the white when she’s around Jon in the north to represent her innocence and trust. Then the black leather is almost used to simulate armour and her becoming one with her dragon.
Side not, I cannot wait to see Rhaenys costumes incorporate armour. Daenerys and Drogon both Should have had some. Of course it’ll be nothing too bulky as she cannot wield a sword nor does she fight on the ground but she’s got some to deflect arrows when flying in battle!! Tbf I’m looking forward to all the costumes and the story they will tell.

I really liked the dress you have as number one as well I think the blue is striking and looks great with her white blonde hair and it is what she wears when she comes into her own and takes command of the unsullied. The cape that has blue on the edges is just so cool too!!

I have started my coverage on the new show. I am mostly happy with what I see. There are some fit issues (I just did a video on it) but the fabrics, jewelry and trimmings are gorgeous. We will see it it rises to the level of Michele Clapton's work.

I notice the Quarth dress (no7) remind me of Lyanna´s wedding dress. And also the arrival at Dragonstone costume has embroidery details on the shoulder parts that remind me of older Rhaenyra´s gown in the throne room, the black with red lining one.
Ah the white fur coat! Recreating it in 1:4 scale...I swallowed so much of that fur hair. But it was worth it.

Okay trying to catch up on comments. So rewatch time. I had totally forgotten about the ring so thanks for pointing it out and the significance of it later. One thing that really comes to front with this compilation of yours, is that Dany's costumes really are the height of an aesthetic that appeals to me most of the time: Deceptively 'simple'. There's a lot of texture in pieces that aren't elaborate at first glance. I love that. I can appreciate really intricate and obviously ornate work , I even really love it. But there's something about being brave enough to try to create something more 'classic'/'plain'/unpretentious or even reusing basic designs and still being unique that I adore.

I have to admit I really really love the slave dress. I've always loved that type of look.
Also I SO appreciate the artistic comparisons as well as your usual previous/historical design inspirations you provide. It goes to show inspiration can come from many places.
To be honest I can appreciate but I've never really taken to Dany's white northern coat. I always thought well, it's functional for the area.
Oh WOW I have never noticed the sort of red wash/fade on that leather look. I /adore/ it when things like that are pulled in. It 'mixes up' a look in a material that can seem generic.
I think I just take to Dany in white in general it seems. But maybe it's because a lot of those fall into that first rant.
You know there mightbe “so little ' of that one dress but it highlights something I've not noticed before. Even if it has traces of the Dothraki styles... there's something about the braiding/weaving in those looks that at times can also sort of look like they're mimicking scales.
Yeah the Grecian gown is waaay up there for me. Again, simple but elegant. I also love how this shows off the different ways to utilize cloaks. As we all know, Cloaks are love.

I am impressed with this video. Although I stopped watching every episode after the Blood Wedding, most of the costumes were seen through youtube summaries. I liked the explanation. If I had a bigger TV the close up pictures would be even more marvelous.

Thank you so much for this video. I really appreciate learning the terminology! I had a blouse years ago that had an amazing stand-up collar. Without having the proper terminology it has been difficult searching for a replacement. So now, I think if I search the word “cobra collar”, maybe I will be able to find another blouse!

@@Costume_CO Seeing this video reminded me of the changes in style each main lady went through, and how Dany had the biggest changes. Cersei stayed relatively the same post S1 until season 7. Sansa did something of an O, starting from Winterfell to King's Landing fashion to back to Winterfell only modified. Margeary kept the sexy in her fashion until the arrest. Daenerys had the biggest change in fashion just by virus of all the countries she'd been to.

Okay but why? Considering they were away from their family since they were children their costuming is more influenced by the cultures of Essos and their romanticized memories. I wouldn't expect it to match what we see in the new show so your preface that this is to review before House of Dragons doesn't make sense.

The series will play off of established themes of the original series and Danys interruptions of her ancestral symbolism’s and styles definitely will be carried over to the prequel. Meaning they will be showing what Dany was influenced by. Also next time form ur half assed contrarian/ troll views can U at the very least do so in a comprehensible fashion
Maybe cus it makes sense to look at what Dany wore so you can see connections with what the og targaryans are wearing? Or for, ya know, fun?
