this is so cool! it's always amazing how in depth you go. would love to see you do some tutorials on any of the techniques you talk about in your reviews!
Robert Furlong Thanks Robert. I'm not a cutter/stitcher by profession - I was a wardrobe head. I will see if I can solicit one of my costume friends to help with a tutorial. :)
Costume Cinematografico that would be amazing. there are some techniques you mention in your other videos that I try to recreate, but can never find any videos or guides on. I would really love to see a professional recreate and demonstrate some of these techniques.
I added a link in the description on how to do the arrowhead smocking - the embroidery that Michele Carragher uses for the dragonscale technique. She does it in a larger scale but you can scale it down. I will also have more on that in part 2.
Robert, I decided that I am going to do a dragonscale / lock stitch tutorial - just practicing right now.
Costume Cinematografico AAAAHHH! I am so sorry it took me so long to see this!!! yay I am so excited to see it!!!!
In my opinion, the most beautiful outfits she wears are the tuquoise qartheen gown and the white coat in season 7
Mary Hill Yes, absolutely!
Also season 4 criss cross font scale dress.
Dany looks gorgeous anytime she puts on blue
The embroidery on Dany’s signature blue dress is gorgeous but unfortunately isnt very visible on screen.
Do you mean in my video or on Game of Thrones show Sara?
Game of Thrones, you showed it well!
Thanks Sara! It can be dark on GOTs sometimes, especially in S6 and 7, so it is really hard to see the details. That's why it's really great that embroidery artist Michele Carragher took great closeups of her work.
I can not understand why you don't have like a ton of views .-. I'm a fashion designer and If I ever end up being a teacher you will be class material like every day!!!!
Cecilia Hernández Hi Cecilia! Thank you so much for your kind words. I just started the channel back in June so it takes a while to get subscribers.
Costume Cinematografico well you sure deserve subscribers and views :D you are doing such an amazing job!!
idd she is, she is really amazing in sharing her knowledge with us! I love her every time she makes a video and hear her voice!
Nice Pinterest
Thanks Amelia, I was just on there today and I thought that maybe I should add something new. 😁
The last blue dress with the dragonscale details is so beautiful. I never realized it.
My favorite fashion period is her season one and two silk soft gowns. I love when she looks so feminine, it always gets me in awe
Sofiiababy Yes, they are very beautiful.
Came to see Emilia Clarke in robes, stayed for the clothing lesson.
Thanks Mic!
Hi! About the scoop thing on Dany's Qarth costumes: Michele Clapton actually has an insect motif in the Qartheen costumes-- if you check out Michele Carragher's website or some of the extras' costumes, you can see embroidery 3D insects all over the wealthy Qartheen citizens' costumes. I believe the scoop thing is meant to be a beetle-like element, which could be common in this fictional environment.
Hmmm, could be.
Your videos are great!
Also, blue could be special color for the Dothraki because it's the color of the sky, and in their culture 'all important things should happen under the sky' etc.
Thanks for commenting Krogan. 😁
It feels like Danny sheds more and more of the Qarth style as she becomes more disillusioned by them. I think the curved piece is there as an armor/stomacher detail as someone else mentioned. I love how nothing is accidental and Michele Clapton has a reason for every detail being there. Thanks for this amazing video!
Thanks for your comment Leanne!
Thank you for compiling all of the information together! This is such an underrated video.
Thanks so much Yashny!
Love your videos! I had no idea so much went into the GOT costumes. Thanks for keeping it simple so fashion dummies like me can understand.
Haha! Thanks for stopping by Vicki. I'm sure you are no fashion dummy.
your videos are amazing.. sorry it took me so long to see them. So far, I have seen this Dany, Sansa and Magerie. keep up at these. Amazing.
+Grant Frisbie Thanks so much! I'm going to do a top ten after each GoTs season 7 episode (just seven this season) so stay tuned.
Great video! It's fascinating how much of the character is revealed through the costume and all the little details are so interesting.
I just found your channel and so far I've watched your videos on reign, margery and sansa.
The only critique I have on this video is that Circe is not the greek goddess of magic. She is a sorceress.
The goddess of magic is Hekate...at least thats how I learned it :)
+Paula Schmitz Thanks Paul! And for the correction. I'm not sure where I got that info on Circe, dang internet isn't the best source for information. :)
Paula Schmitz I learned about this Circe before I heard about the Cersei in GoT, so for the first couple seasons, I couldnt shake the image of Greek Circe from my mind whenever Cersei was on camera. Honestly I think if Cersei had the same powers Circe had, she would turn people into pigs too.... or worse...
Amazing video, thank you!
I love how the costumes reflect character development, and here I discover so much more than during actually watching the show, where so much is going on at once.
Great work! :)
Ah, thanks so much Alexandra!
The ammount of detail and dedication of your videos is amazing! You deserve more views! I would love to see a video with the costumes of Xena the warrior Princess :)
+Rox Oh, wow! I haven't heard that show mentioned in years!
these videos are so interesting, thank you for putting all of this together!
+KeyToThePlanet Thanks!
Finally Dany! I really love your video's! they provide a lot of perspective while watching the series. Can't wait for part II :)
Thanks Eva! I'm trying to get Part II out in the next few days - It's mostly done. :)
Thank you so much for this really in-depth information! I love the art history.
Thanks Nicole! I love art and costume history too. Thank you for commenting.
Thanks for crating this video, I was longing for it.
Thanks Cristina! I should have Part II up in a few days!
Thank you so much for this video, can't wait for part two!!!
You're welcome!
New to your channel and I ADORE these videos! Your character summary at the beginning is super helpful too by the way - it can be really hard to remember details and keep track of plot points across seasons. :)
+Carrie Lynn I'm so glad that's helpful! I get super confused as well because there are so many characters to keep track of!
At least the women are a little easier to focus on. I swear if I ask my husband one more time "who's THIS old white guy now?!" one more time he'll stop watching with me ;)
+Carrie Lynn Haha! Yes, there seems to be planty of them.
Waterhouse and Mucha 💖😘💖 so talented artists, loooooove them so much!!
And the scoop thing is for her bags 😁 ..bag holder.. to hang the shoulder strap on or a holder for a clutch.. if she had one 😂🤣😅 ..it's very obvious new when you know, right..? 🤗
Take care.
I'm now on my way to part 2..
Great video, as always! Hugs & sunshine☀️ N
Beautiful, intelligent and informed. I love your series!
Thank you so much, Hillary!
Costume Cinematografico
Thank YOU!
Love how well researched your videos are, so interesting =)
+Sara McNamara Thank you!
Thank you this is great (bachelor student of costume design) very helpful video
Thanks Vooms! Part II should be done soon. :)
Something that I dislike about GOT's costumes is how modern the jewelry always looks. When I see Clapton's pictures in interviews, she always wears the same oversized architectural modern jewelry, and I think that it looks anachronistic in the GOT world. The jewelry should've been so much more intricate and less modernist in my opinion. Great video!
She did this major shift after season 4. I'm not sure why she switched to more sculptural pieces. As you mention, I think she sometimes goes for pieces that she likes vs what works in the world of GOTs and for the characters. I felt this way about many of her choices this season. I realise it is fantasy, but most of it is historically medival Europe with eastern influences. I might be an outlier on this.
Thank you for this, very fun and interesting. I'm not even interested in fashion and it was neat! Subbed and liked. Keep up the good work!
+christina1986ify Thank you so much!
Your videos are amazing! I love the costumes in this show and you are reminding me why I love them so much!
Thanks so much Maggie! These are much older videos but I just love the costumes so much too. Are you planning on watching House of the Dragon?
@@Costume_CO yes! I'm hoping for that early game of thrones intrigue
So far it's looking pretty good (based on the trailers)
Awesome content!
Thank you so much!
I loved these two videos! Did anyone else feel like her hair kind of looked dragon-like? I don't know, but the braids against the head happened more when she was around them and that's how it felt to me.
I think she added braids for every victory
Like the dothraki
Would *LOVE* to see you do a review of the costumes for TV series Outlander!
+Muddy Witch Working on it! Hopefully have it out in January. 😊
Costume CO *YEAH!!!!!* I am really interested by the work on Clair's wedding dress (Season 1 episode 7 - think!) I heard the embroidery on this dress uses techniques not used for over 100 years. I'd be VERY excited to see more details on these embroidery techniques. Also this costume was so heavy because of the amount of material used that the actress (Catrona Balfe) had to have a special seat for sitting on between takes. And also that Catrona had to be ferried around in a special golf buggy because it was too heavy to walk in. My query is - were Nobel woman of this time really wearing such heavy dresses or was this costume not based on the weight of fabrics used at the time? If you could find this out I would be really pleased! Thanks for all your good work!
Amazing!
Thanks Ayla!
Simply amazing
+Renata B. Thanks Renata!
12:51
i think that thing is meant to hold a belt of sorts? something like a braid or rope to be tied around the waist, maybe?
Thanks you, I think that's the conclusion we came up with, or maybe her horse's reigns? I never did find out for certain. Hopefully one day. Thank you so much for commenting.
Wow, glad to hear Alfoneo Mucha was mentioned!
+julijakeit I adore Mucha!
I would wildly guess that the scoop thing in dany's dress at 12:49 is where to put the reins (The horse string things) while riding
+Vany Fiero Yes, someone else pointed that out and I think that makes the most sense!
Costume Cinematografico
ah alright :D
Vany Fiero
How ? There's no hole.
Vany Fiero
Btw there's no point in attaching the reins on you. If you don't want to hold them, you can let then rest on the saddle. Plus this dress is definitely not made for horse riding so idk...
it must be a baby dragon perch
What about a video in which you explain the way of seeing and analyzing the costumes in movies/TV series ?
Hi there, and thank you for your comment! Are you asking if I can do a play by play of the show and explain as I see it?
Hmm..not exactly. I'm curios about your methods of analyzing movie/series costumes, a plan or outline of interpreting each costume and how you conclude the opinions. Thanks ^^
Okay, I know what you mean. Let me think on this - I'll see what I can come up with. :)
Wow you did such a good job explaining everything
I would also like to ask were you find the picture of the costumes on the mannequins?
I'm looking for a clearer view of her debut dress x
Hi there, thank you for your kind comment. If you want to email me heidi@costumeco.ca, I will send you what I have.
The costume at 8:22 is my favorite.
Yes, that's a great one. 😁
welcome back! 😁
Thanks Alonna!
wow, so now i can basically make my own!
Yes, and I hope you do. And then please send me the pictures.
This is lit!
Thanks diana. :)
The scoop thing looks like a modified gorget which was usually worn at the the throat. Other than that it might be a stomacher. A piece of jewelry worn across the top of the stomach.
Liz Smith Awesome job Liz. Okay I will have to think of a prize for you. :)
That's OK, I might be wrong. But I have studied costume design and historical costumes for years, and I know how to smock. Anyway I live in the UK, that makes it difficult for you to send a prize. Your reply back to me is more than enough. I am enjoying your videos very much, I appreciate how much you enjoy the embroidery on the garments worn in the series. You really will have to do Downton Abbey. Have you ever been to London and gone to Angels? They have miles and miles of costumes from films and TV.
Thanks Liz! I have Downton Abbey on my list of shows to do and Outlander. Have you seen it? The costumes are amazing. I'm actually doing Reign next and they rented a lot of costumes from Angels for their show. I've walked by Angels but I've never been in - years ago I worked for a costume house in Toronto and worked with them on a project.
I live in Scotland, of course I have seen Outlander. The costumes are great on it. Angels has a great tour, my daughter and I did it about 10 years ago, I also did the V&A costume department at the same time. I worked as a fitter/alteration hand for one of the big department stores here in Scotland and studied History on the side. I love clothes and have always been fascinated by how they are made. I made a point of studying the big fashion houses and I am so impressed that you know who Vionett was. No one I ever speak to nowadays knows who she was, even thought I always hated with a passion when I ever had to alter something cut on the bias. Almost impossible to do perfectly and perfection was something that I had to do every single time. I like how you noticed the sunray pleating on Dany's costumes, I pity the person who had to press those skirts. It used to take me over two hours to hem a sunray pleated skirt. Half an hour for the sewing, one and a half for the pressing of the hem and basting the pleats into place.
I love Toronto, my favourite city in America.
Michelle is brilliantly a costume genuis love it😘
+Vanessa Raices Yes, she is very talented!
I think the scoop thing is for her dragons to perch on.....although we never actually see that.
Thanks Ashley, someone else mentioned that and of all the answers it appears to make the most sense! Cheers, Heidi.
12:43 Honestly I'm not sure I think it may have been an extra design piece or just extract bubu made. However I do recall the very first time I saw it I got the feeling of a hook/ collar vibe. Actually the entire metal chest piece gave off that feeling as well. It could be a symbolization of the future of the character. Since later on she is referred to as "Breaker of Chains"
Is that good enough to get a prize? :3 I'm joking, I didn't just comment for that hehe.
+ccanime36 Someone else mentioned that it could be for her reigns?
The reigns of the horse? ... Could be but I just have this feeling that no kingdom would use anything on their attire for that...
+ccanime36 That's true. They don't look like the horse riding types.
I think it's some kind of Quarth, slave master thing....
I know Emilia is not a tall girl but some of the outfits she had make her looks even shorter, is that done intentionally or just mistakes
ANDYofzz That's a great observation. I'd have to confirm this, but if I recall there was something about Daenarys' height in the books. Her boots, however, appear to have a 2-3 inch heel.
Emilia's figure looks much better in modern clothes, I think
I think it is a challenge for the less statuesque gals. :)
haha, I hope you don't think I'm nitpicking, I think she's beautiful, just wondering if its intentional
Oh, not at all. :) I cannot find anything that shows that it's intentional - at least nothing said in an interview by designer Michele Clapton. Dan and Dave might have said something about it.
I don't care to see Dany or Emelia... I would love to see the beautiful lady that has such a lovely voice.....
The connection to Jon Snow is most likely only a movie adaptation thing. While it is true that Jon Snow is not the result of honourable Ned cheating (he only took the blame), but someone whose identity needed to be protected, it is rather unlikely that he's actually a the offspring of Lyana and Rhaegar, as it doesn't fit in timing nor geography (the tower, where is it?). In fact the books are on many things so precise that you can see lies from calculating traveling times for instance. Moreover, R+L as portrayed in the movies would have been the most stupid decision considering their timing and the consequences (Targarians destroyed, so much bloodshed...).
In any case, I'm not 100% certain on the actual heritage of Jon Snow nor did it become relevant in the books yet.
Yet I've heard time and time again that G.R.R. Martin only gave the adaptation right to the creators of the show because they were capable of answering the question of Jon's true parents... So why would they change it in the actual show? It makes little sense to me. On the fact that Rhaegar and Lyanna running away together seems stupid, I can only agree... but in the end there would probably be a good reason for it. It goes so much against every decision and move Rhaegar made beforehand that it has to have a "logical" explanation.
Can we get a Costumes of Barbara Keen (Gotham) please? ☺️
Okay, let me look into it. :)
Of the two GF he drove crazy, I somehow liked the second more.
Was it referenced in the books or the show that blue was special to the Dothraki?
Hello, I am not certain. I can look into this for you.
@@Costume_CO You’re lovely. Thank you. I love your channel.
Hello, just checked with the community and it appears that it is just a show thing. 😊
@@Costume_CO Thank you so much! It was very sweet of you to respond at all, let alone try and find an answer. This is a very interesting detail about Dothraki culture.
Oh, it's my pleasure. TBH it was a while back that I made the video so I wasn't quite sure.
The only criticism I have is that she stutters and backtracks a fair bit, which sounds like it could be easily fixed by just recording again, and could use some breathing/pacing exercises. She could also stand to pay a little more attention to the pronunciation of certain words - Xaro Xhoan Doxos is butchered, as is Viserys. It's understandable since the names are pretty damn strange to the tongue, but it can be corrected by just listening to the show.
That doesn't detract from the content, though, which is pretty damn great.
+Ana Paes Hey Ana, I've tried to work on that. I hope you find my more recent videos an improvement. Thanks for watching anyway. :)
I'll be sure to check them out!
+Ana Paes Thank you!
Most of the examples of broaches on Dany and plenty of what you showed are not penannular broaches but rather annular broaches, the difference being that annular broaches don't have a break
Thank you. 😁
Honestly, they confuse me. I know that there are two types at the very least:
1) a closed, eliptical version
2) an open version.
I didn't even find any information on it on Wikipedia, despite them having a lot on hats and coats. Still, such details they are amazingly lacking (including some more contemporary material on fashion)
I have to look more closely at these (I will when I have more time), but the ones on Dany and Viserys are closed, and the ones on Sansa and Catelyn are open. I think that the ones on Dany aren't even a proper brooch. There are lots of great example of these types of brooches from Viking grave finds. Here is my pinterest page with some examples: www.pinterest.ca/costumecinemato/vikings/
Thank you. It took me a sweet time to realise that these things were the predecessor of those fancy broches that had no function other than looking great. We used to have one as an heirloom from the late 19th c, but I can't ever remember seeing anyone ever wearing a broche in real life.
Similarly, I only realised recently that cloaks existed in square and semicircular cuts (the latter often opening at the right side with a seperate hood).
The Greeks and Romans were known for their cloaks and they would often fasten them (along with the Chiton) with fibula. Luke Skywalker wears this type of cloak in Star Wars original trilogy.
The Scots wear brooches to this day to fasten their plaids. I'm not an expert in this kind of thing, btw, just have a love of history of fashion.
I was never really interested in costumes or cosplaying but because of these videos i have bought 160 dollars worth of beads fabrics and a sewing machine ro make a daenaerys costume 😂
+Judith Van Der Lee OMG Judith that's awesome! Would you like to share one of your creations with us?
Costume CO
Id rather not im still starting out and all but i really apreciate you reacting to my comment ❤
+Judith Van Der Lee No problem 😀
Do a video with customes of the vampire diaries flashbacks
+Heliana V. Hi there, I haven't seen the series.
Costume CO Oh it's ok I hope that you would do something like reign they have allot of flashbacks and amazing customes
Thank you for answering me !
+Heliana V. My pleasure. I will look at it when I have more time :)
blue for the blue winter rose
HeirnBell
I always thought that it was because blue represents freedom/peace, because blue is an expensive pigment so it's only worn by rich people like aristocrats for example and because blue is the color that suits her the best. Lol
The scoop if the lattice breast top is to enable her to sit down without getting in her way
lovely video! but the quite few names etc. were mispronounced, which was slightly frustrating, bc everything else was so good!
sophie Thanks for the comment! I've tried to make improvements as I've grown. Hopefully you find my more recent GOTs videos an improvement. Cheers, Heidi. 😁
sophie Don't feel bad! I've been called out for my bad pronunciation before, haha! Thanks so much for watching on. 😁
I do world building through a different medium (RPG's) and am always interested in using the correct terms when I try to describe details. I find this information on this channel fascinating, though I don't understand much of what is said. I have almost no knowledge in the finer points (or even broad strokes) of the construction of clothes. Keep doing what you are doing. Now, having said that, I need help to correctly identify a type of garment. It is the... skirt?... that you see in this image. www.flickr.com/photos/fleurione/2944250925/ Sorry for the image, it was the best example I could find. It functions like a long skirt, but it does not go all the way around the body. There is a gap between the pelvic joints that is bridged by either cloth or chain. What would this garment called? Is it even possible? I would like to use it in a character description. Any ideas?
Well, my answer is really that exciting, but it's called an over-skirt. In the Rennaisance, an over-skirt is skirt worn over another, and either split in the front, or draped and tucked, to reveal the
skirts beneath. The forepart was the underskirt that was revealed in the front, but in your case your character is wearing pants. This look is more steam punk and there really is no historical reference that I know of. The chain looks like it's around her leg. I hope that helps!
I love that WoW dragon rider XD
Can you refresh my memory?
The small dragon rider at the right corner of your Season One headline. 3:38
Ah thank you 😁
The scoop could be to hang bags, lol
The goddess Circe is pronounced "sir see" not "serk" just like the character
Okay thank you. 😁
Scoop thing is a taco holder
I love tacos!
Could you do one about the Harry Potter series?
It’s rather lame that the dresses in qarth don’t reveal one breast. That’s what’s described in the books. Would have been a neat look. Would have been fun to create I bet.
Clapton didn't design the costumes from the books. She had one meeting with George at the beginning, but went her own way.
Well she did a great job regardless, even with veering from the books.
That background music sounds like Indian music....
I'm not entirely sure what music piece that is... I think it's in the description but it was a middle eastern piece if I recall
@@Costume_CO then it's Indian traditional song only...
It's quite possible. It just sort of resonated for me. Dany wears a lot of Indian inspired clothing in the show.
@@Costume_CO really...in which season ???
happy to know she was in solo? i would never wish that on someones career
This video is almost 2 years old. :)
i can't help it. i'm a smartass.
good video though
I appreciate that. 😜 I didn't mind Solo that much. I know it was a disappointment to fans.
mixed opinions on solo honestly.
i'm surprised you still read the comments on your old videos
I get notifications for new comments, so I try to respond when I can. :)
I'm really interested in this topic and I think it's well done in general but somehow I have a really hard time with the speech. It's somewhat heavy and exhausting for me to listen to :(
+ditto303 More recent vids have closed captioning so you can watch it with the sound off.
Moosha !!! not Mooka !!!! ( Mucha ! ) please !!! get it right ,,,
Nope: ruclips.net/video/Xgvmnn0j3GQ/видео.html
Both are wrong; trust me, I am Czech. "Ch" is pronounced differently than "ch" in the English words "character" and "chance". It's pronounced similar to "j" in Spanish words. The right pronounciation is on the English Wikipedia.
I noticed you call actresses actors. I find it a bit disturbing as there is nothing wrong with being an actress, it such a beautiful word. Like enchantress, mistress... maybe it's just me who likes that soft '-ess' ending, it reminds me of tides.
+julijakeit Hi there, nothing against the word actress at all. It's just that actor is the professional word for both men and women in theatre and film.
ure stupid enough to overly concern urself with more or less three letters
