Everyone in the comments: "Wow, this guy invented an entire language, he must be Albert Einstein" J.R.R. Tolkien: "Am I a joke to you?" Edit: For those unaware, Tolkien (writer of Lord of The Rings/Hobbit fame) invented his first language at the age of 13 and went on to make around 20 languages in total that he then used for his books (he made the languages first). They included 15 seperate Elvish languages, a language of the Ents (tree people), Orcish, a language of Men, the language of the Hobbits, and of course Dwarvish, which even had its own form of sign language since the forges and mines the dwarves worked in were too loud to communicate verbally. Two of these languages, Quenya and Sindarin, are considered funtional and can easily be used conversationally, though they lack niche words. It seems like this guy is making up certain things as he goes along and I doubt Dothraki and Valyrian are anywhere near as fleshed out as Quenya and Sindarin. So with all do respect, this guy can hold Tolkien's beer.
Elvish was what all the coolest RPers had to learn back in my roleplaying days on forums and places like IMVU. But as far as linguistics go (I studied it during my electives) seem factitious with his explanations.
Not only Tolkien (he did a GREAT job and basically started the Conlanging) but many people have it as a hobby. I have made only one good one, but that doesn't mean I am Einstein. And there is a bog conlang community as well. I don't want to make High Valyrian seem bad, it is really good. It is just that I am upsetten when people praise one person for making a conlang. It is not that hard people.

The linguistic explanations and layers of meaning created are just delightful. What a great video.
I love how this man put a value for language he created
I love how much he seems to love the languages he has built.
VANITY FAIR!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!! Please make a video with Ramin Djawadi next
agreed, another great genius in the series!
This guy is a genius don’t get me wrong but his hair cracks me up😂😂
I quite like the hair. Although, it's not a common hairstyle in America. It is in European and Asian countries though.
@@khazms I'm European and I can tell you that this hairstyle is not typical for Europeans lol.
@@FabiJenneke Europe has many countries, it's a literal continent. You can't possibly speak for all Europeans. I've seen the hairstyle common in some European countries.
That said, I'll take your word for it. I'm just saying, I've seen it more common in Europe and Asia than America.
genius people don't care what they look like
For me it's his thumbs lol
As a little language nerd I loved this! Fun fact, the y in high valerian is the same as the Norwegian y. Also hard for native English speakers.
Man's rolling them R's like his life depended on them
He's so chill and nice and obviously a genius lol
Jajajaja those people really spoke valiryan like some english speakers speak spanish 😄😭 use your Rrrrrrrrrrr
It's like Braking Bad scenes in spanish all over again.
@@27poker Now you made me remember Gus Fring's horrible Spanish. As a native speaker I appreciated the effort, but God, where they atrocious
I like his recommendation of Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give it Away for people to practice the pronunciation. I've never even thought of that.
I speak Portuguese.
Never learned how to do that Rrrrrr.
27 poker not all of us can roll our r’s😔
Did anyone else have an audio issue when the fan is speaking dothraki to Jason Mamoa?
i did! wonder why that is..
It works with my headphones, but not without, and I have no idea why
just came back to this after the more extensive+casual use of Valyrian in HotD - Millie’s “Dracarys” is perfect AND the difference with the 150+ year old accent compared to time setting in GoT is felt and appreciated… the lil details make a show which is why HotD is amazing. Thanks GRRM!!!
“That’s it, that’s the sound” - true enthusiasm
this guy just wants to bro down with people and get invited to parties haha i love him
This is good. I wish I spoke this language. If only it was useful in life.
Like klingon?
I mean 😏 yea I guess. 😆
@@jaydattchampavat6387 You can actually read stuff in Klingon though and take classes for it.
It will get you all the girls bro.
Something doesn't need to be "useful" to be worth learning or enjoying. Don't let capitalism ruin your life lol
This man is a genius but someone please tell him to part his hair a different way...
Hahahahhahaa
😂😂😂😂😂
He came up with Dracarys. He can do what he wants
Eccentric people have a habit of parting their hair that way, I'm guilty too. It looks bad but feels right! lmao😂 Good Day
@@w.bi11y Actually George came up with dracarys, but you're right😂
i need him to come back for a video but this time for House of the Dragon and its multiple valyrian dialogues
It's really crazy to realize that he is perfectly fluent on a language that doesn't even exist. He's probably the one who "speaks like a native"
he does have a spin off ... it’s called AQUAMAN
I wish Dothraki was on Duolingo too. I'm having a hard time with High Valyrian whereas Dothraki comes naturally to me
Indra Nemty cool
I like when the woman was trying to speak to Jason in Dothraki he was not above correcting her mistakes though she was clearly proud of herself in the video. 🤓
At around@3:00 when you talk about her accidentally using the S in the wrong place and it was fortuitous that because the regional dialect happens to do the same thing. What's cool about the way you made the language dialect for that region is that that's how regional dialect end up working anyway. It's what "feeeeeels" like the right thing to say basically so it came out natural the way it would in real life! Neat! :]
No but how his face instantly lights up when Daenerys showed up ,he was SO proud of her 🥹
This dude is incredible and stuff like this is literally hard for me to comprehend how people can do this. Crazy. What a genius
So basically he just made up 2 languages.
what else u gonna do :l
And there's actual people learning them on language apps
Julian Sen people must really have a lot of Time
He says he even creates languages in his spare time when he’s bored, he’s probably created a good amount of them.
this is his job, but he got it by having it as a hobby for years and years
valyrian and dothraki and two of the best conlangs i've ever seen, as a linguist i have so much respect for David
if I could be anything in life, I'd be this guy. I absolutely love languages and I love studying lingustics, but this guy took it three thousand levels above everyone else.
This is amazing, all the production surrounding this show is just incredible.
i am so glad David is getting some of the recognition he deserves. fonas chek!
I dont really even have anything new to add. Really impressed how they come up with this languages and make them sound cool and they arent annoying like the way star trek Discovery does it. 2 thumbs up.
Everyone in the comments: "Wow, this guy invented an entire language, he must be Albert Einstein"
J.R.R. Tolkien: "Am I a joke to you?"
Edit: For those unaware, Tolkien (writer of Lord of The Rings/Hobbit fame) invented his first language at the age of 13 and went on to make around 20 languages in total that he then used for his books (he made the languages first).
Yeah people forgot about him! But when LOTR was out and in the limelight, there were tons of people talking about the languages.
Elvish is the OG.
It's not a competition
I think dothraki will be easy to learn if you speak Arabic cuz there's some sounds that exist in Arabic for example the "kh" sound which is the alphabet "خ"
I love him and can't imagine how intelligent he must be to create languages. Blown away.
Is he teaching? I'll pay for that!
He is a very intelligent man, but his languages won't live past 2035, or maybe even 2028 because of Season 8.
@@scottallison8896 Doesn't really answer the question...
@@scottallison8896 nah, i dont think Season 8 would damage the languages! :)
@@santirulez
I gave a reason not to learn them.
@@scottallison8896 still doesn't answer the question lol
He was on the Daily Show once talking about how he expanded these languages and he was so amazing I went out and bought his book.
Book name
One of my biggest wishes is to actually take a course on Dothraki and Valyrian, how cool would it be to use it to talk in secret with your friends in public ;)
You can lmao, use Duo-Lingo to learn high valyrian
@@greennx lol
Too bad you'd have to find a friend who would actually want to learn it too
Too bad my friend's are too lazy, I'd love that! :)
Thank you for putting so much thought into it. The world needs more people like you in it!
I can't imagine the ingenuity to create a new language that actually works.
