It's important to mention that the theme of dragonflies is important to Sansa even though they aren't her sigil because dragonflies change their skin according to their environment, which you see her do many times.
Thanks for sharing! Is that a book reference?
Nope, it's a show thing, I've just read it in forums when I was curious. I love how Sansa's clothing has such a hidden meaning. I only wish I could sew like that :0
Kattunge Sansa’s costumes are my favorite in the show, and after season 1, she began to show her strength that would later make her one of my favorite characters, along with Arya and Tyrian(I also loved the Tyrells)
I read somewhere the costume designer imagined that Sansa, as a child would have known, and loved, the story of the Prince of the Dragonflies, a prince who abdicated his place in succession to marry a commoner.
I really wish they would do more with Sansa's costumes! She's the one character that loves making clothes and they give her so little!
Do you mean in the later seasons or in general?
I did mean in general but definitely in season 6 & 7 where she had like 2 outfits each season. And the ones in season 7 you can't really tell are different. I would love to see her in something more commanding as acting Lady of Winterfell or just with more direwolves on her dresses (in the likeness of Lady or Ghost even).
Yeah, there was a bit of a lost opportunity there. I had the same reaction to Sansa's season 7 costumes and said so in a later video.
My other gripe was that all of the scenes were so darkly lit that you could barely make out any of the detail anyway.
I agree that they should've done more but at the same time, it makes sense that she doesn't have that many.
At the beginning of season 1, she has a number of outfits that show her transition to the southern ways, this works because she's the daughter of the king's hand and has access to many materials and riches.
However, after her father's death, she is quite literally at the mercy of the Lannisters, while they're rich I doubt they would've given her money to buy the things she wanted. So if she did want a new gown she would most likely have had to ask Cersei or someone else for the money and materials.
Even as she goes to the Vale, chances are she didn't feel secure enough in her position to ask for the money or materials. Not to mention she didn't spend that long there before going with Littlefinger.
Going back to Winterfell probably wasn't that different than being at King's landing, while she was technically home, she probably didn't have access to her family's money and thus any new dresses must go through Ramsey.
I really don't know why they didn't give her more costumes, especially when she came into power. Maybe a reason for that was that she didn't want to mirror Cersei and her ever-changing wardrobe. Since northern values are different, she probably wanted to seem more grounded and focused rather than frivolous by spending so much money and time on new clothing.
Anyways that's just my interpretation.
Sansa's costume in the very 1st episode of the 1st season is most notable. The costume she wears when all the Starks are standing to greet Robert & Cersei, that costume is probably the most pale shade of blue against her milky white skin, singling Sansa out in a strange way from the rest of the Starks. Moreover the warm fabric of wool or maybe linen make Sansa look like an innocent little lamb, ripe for eating by the Lannister lions. It's at that moment when Sansa locks eyes with Joffrey for the 1st time. Her whole costume gives a sense of her being like a "babe in the woods."
OMG! And I thught Sansa´s dresses from season I were boring! They were full of details, pity the screening doesn´t make them justice. Wonderful video
+Nesseire Yes, sadly it's hard to get a grasp of them just watching the show. I didn't really notice them either.
My favorite detail is that after Ned's death, but before her marriage, her clothes are often ill fitting, like they weren't made for her like the clothes of the other noble girls and ladies. It shows how, technically she is being provided for, materially she isn't going without, but she isn't truly being cared for. This starts after Ned's arrest, but gets more noticable.
Wow, the designers put so much care and effort into the details of the costume, most of which go unnoticed by viewers. They must truly love what they do.
A most intriguing video. Sansa's costumes are always interesting, and I hadn't realised how much her changing fortunes and character had been reflected in the colours, design and details of her clothing until now. Is there an updated video that includes Sansa's costumes from Season Six?
For the historical nit-pickers... Elizabeth of York was the daughter of Edward IV, not of Henry VI, whose only child, Edward of Westminster died in his teens at the battle of Tewkesbury. Just for the record.
Hi Hairy Melon! I love your name. Yes, I will be doing a season 6 video of both Cersei and Sansa's costumes. As well, I very much appreciate your correction. It gets very complicated for me with the royals and the Roman numerals. Cheers, Heidi.
Hello and thank you for your reply. I am enjoying your GoT costume videos very much indeed and am very pleased to hear a season six is in the pipeline! I'm glad you like my name, which is from a song I heard years ago. It was called "I'm shy, Mary Ellen, I'm shy" in which the bashful suitor mispronounces his young lady's name as 'Hairy Melon' at one point and it still makes me laugh. One of my middle names is Mary, and I had very long hair (nearly four feet long) for many years, hence... Hairy Melon.
I'm relieved you didn't mind the historical correction, and you're quite correct about how easy it is to get confused by all the many kings of the same name with all the attendant numerals; everyone does! There have been a number of Queens as monarch in their own right(s?) of course, but to remember all eight Henrys and Edwards, four Williams, three Richards (possibly four), two each of James' and Charles', and the sprinkling of Harold, John, Stephen, (even a Louis, but we don't talk about him much as he was looked upon as an invader, despite having been invited), and so many others - well,a considerable task; too numerous and historically distant to mention.
Keep up the good work! Could you possibly make a video with the emphasis on GoT jewellery too, please?
Hi Hairy Melon, I try to incorporate the jewelry in each video. Have you seen my Daenarys videos yet? In my next video about Melisandre, I spend quite a bit of time on her mysterious choker.
this is such an underrated yt channel..your videos are brilliant and so detailed! awesome job!
Thanks Laura! I just started it 2 months ago. I really appreciate your wonderful comment.
OMFG, I'm just noticing the gowns Sansa wears between her marriage to Tyrion and the Purple Wedding are often purple, I'm sure it's a reference to the Purple Wedding. Especially the one she wears when she's mourning her mother and brother: it's purple AND embroidered with grapevine leaves. Given that Lady Olenna poisoned Joffrey's wine and was born Olenna Redwyne... The foreshadowing was actually strong. Anyway, keep doing videos like this one, you're pretty awesome!
In medieval England, only the royal families could wear purple and certain furs such as ermine. Strict laws were passed restricting what the different levels of society could wear. And obviously, it depended on what you could afford.
Sansa does wear a butterfly necklace, but the small necklace is a Drgonfly, both represents change, rebirth.
When she wears the lion necklace, she's trying to play in a way to avoid conflicts with Cersei and Joffery.
Sansa's needle is supported by chain connected to a necklace in the shape of Greek symbol Theta, which is the symbol for death, add to the Mockingbird and Raven feathers ( both birds are intelligent and manipulating and Ravens will also get even with tormentors ) we now have the dress telling a story.
Book readers could probably understand the symbolism.
I dreamt a wolf howling in the rain, but no one heard his grief. I dreamt such a clangor I thought my head might burst, drums and horns and pipes and screams, but the saddest sound was the little bells. (Red Wedding ) I dreamt of a maid at a feast ( Pink Wedding ) with purple serpents in her hair, venom dripping from their fangs. And later I dreamt that maid again, slaying a savage giant ( Littlefinger's death ) in a castle built of snow.
-the ghost of High Heart, A Storm of Swords.
i noticed that Sansa is wearing her "needle" cross necklace and a bit of armour over her dress in the new promo pictures released to day so im going to theorize that she does not feel quite secure as Lady of Winterfell. i love your channel im analyzing everything now. there are literal "spoilers" in the costumes.
+IamD0wJ0nes Is she wearing needle? I couldn't quite tell, but I totally agree with you about the armour! It's hard to tell what's going on with her and Little finger, but I notice that he's standing between her and the railing while she's looking down from the balcony at Winterfell. He's definitely got her ear it will be interesting to see if he is actually able to influence her.
Her hair is in the way in the picture with littlefinger but she's definitely wearing her needle in the hbo commercial with the rest of the cast doing the "haa" hbo thing. I really hope she beats him at his own game by the end of the season.
Okay, I will look at it again. I can't wait for the new season!
for her wedding gown : lions are not for joffrey's house , they are for tyrion's house , the lannisters :) but I think it was a lapsus
annick demoncuit I was reading a quote by Michele Carragher's so maybe I misread it? Let me check:)
no actually you are right , I misheard it , you are talking about baratheons ^^ my bad , really
anyway your videos are incredible , the research and the analysis are really stunning , thank you for this quality content !
Thank you so much Annick! I have made some mistakes so I don't mind being corrected. :) I actually have a cousin named Annick. It seems like a pretty rare name because you are the only other one I have seen.
it is a French name , and even in France it has become pretty rare , so I can guess in the rest of the world I must be really rare :D
fun fact that really has his place here : one of the producers of game of thrones is called Annick , it is one of the first names you see when the episodes end
Also I mean, Joffrey isn't really a Baratheon at all, he's full Lannister. Even if he wasn't a bastard born of incest, Joffrey appeared to elevate his mother's house to be just as important as the Baratheon's. Just look at his royal sigil, the lion and the stag on one flag
Something else that I like to point out is that despite the deaths of her brothers, father, and mother, Sansa is only ever allowed to dress in color until Littlefinger “frees” her. My favorite instance of being “trapped” in color, so to speak, is during the purple wedding when Joffrey is having dwarves perform “the war of the five kings”. There’s a long shot of Sansa where she is clearly holding back tears and upset by the mockery of her brother’s death, but with her bright hair and colored gown, she’s almost oversaturated. It is clear she feels trapped. Other characters, however, are free to completely change their color palettes. We see Cersei in black nearly every season and Margery dressed in black during the mourning period after Joffrey’s death, but Sansa is never allowed to dress in black, to mourn a traitor to the crown. But notice how quickly she switches to dark colors after She’s allowed to - the first dress she makes herself in the Eyrie is Black, when she can finally allow herself to mourn, and she continues in a darker color palette for the rest of the show (with exceptions, like her wedding dress). Color, for Sansa, is constraining and, ultimately, her shedding pastels is like the chains being removed from her. So much meaning!!!
Thanks for commenting Allison.
Sansa's costumes has reached 20,000 views! Thank you.
Costume CO of course it did, your videos re amazing
+andres segui Thank you!
Thanks Jenn, I'll check it out. Is it on Netflix?
And today, 18 February 2019, it's 70.388 🤩🎶🤩
the butterfly clasps are removable and sansa can use them on one gown or another
Hi Dawne! I address this in a later video Top 10 Game of Thrones - Costume Facts I Missed: ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=e7Y0hYkobcY
Hi again,
Not much to add, but perhaps to point out the butterfly imagery could be indicating Sansa's transition from a mostly passive character in the series, someone to whom things happen, a pawn in the Lannister and Little Finger games, eventually into a more active player, taking her destiny into her own hands. She's no longer the caterpillar inching along and vulnerable, but a butterfly able to move more freely and evade predators.
Elizabeth of York was the eldest child of Edward the IV, not of his enemy, Henry the VI Edward was married to Elizabeth Woodville. Henry the VI, the Mad King, was married to Margaret of Anjou.
In both the books and the show, Sansa often has to dress conservatively and modestly to appear humbled and non-threatening. Otherwise, my girl would have rocked many beautiful outfits with her awesome sewing and embroidery skills!
Fashion has never been my thing but the outfits are so beautiful in GoT even the mans armor look good. Happy to have ran in to this channel, do you do videos on the mans outfits as well by any chance?
+Wamp-Wamp Hi there, if you check out my GOTs playlist, I've done dedicated videos to Petyr Baelish and Joffrey. In my series on the costumes of Westeros, I cover many of the men's costumes including armour.
Yeah after watching a few of your ladies videos I checked out the rest. I was really happy to see you did a break down of the houses and armor. I never realized how Japanese inspired some of the shows outfits where.
Keep doing good work.
I'm really intrigued by the necklace that Sansa wore in the crypt, the one that has a needle on its end to mirror Arya's needle. I saw on a RUclips video that there are many symbols throughout the series that have mystical references, such as Phi, and that are seen in the shapes that the whitewalkers draw in the snow. I presume that that is the shape I see in Sansa's necklace, but I would really love to know more. It was a rather bold looking item, actually. Very different from what I'd expect Sansa's jewelry style to be. So intrigued by it!
+Belinda Peng Yes, I saw the one about Phi as well. I did address it in my Q & A - I'll get the link for you, although like Screen Prism, its honestly speculation. After I posted the video about it, Michele Clapton explained it as something else entirely.
So I think in the end, it will be up to you toake the final decision.
Here it is: ruclips.net/video/_HORm_TCA8s/видео.html [5:38]
I am getting into costume design in movies and series and I'm glad your channel exists!!! I love to see how costume design can tell so much about a character as much as the script does!!!
Thank you so much for commenting!
Her costume in Season 8 episode 6 when she was crowned Queen of the North was something else. Wow.
Hi Jill, yes it was! I have that featured in my Top 20 Season 8 costumes. :)
Elizabeth of York was the daughter of Edward IV not Henry VI. Henry VI only had one son who was killed during the Wars of the Roses.
Thank you Rachael! Another viewer has corrected me but I didn't correct the video. :)
You're welcome. I'm already in love with your videos
A beautifully narrated, well-researched review. Love your work.
Thanks so much Robert. This is an old one when I first started out on RUclips. I was just learning the ropes then. I appreciate your comment.
Sansa had some of the best outfits in the show
One of the rare channels that i subscribed as soon as i watch first video! Keep up the good work. Your channel is very unique.
+king bae Thank you so much!
Loved this! Thank you for taking the time to research and putting these videos together. They are wonderful!
+shumakerart Thank you!
I'm absolutely loving this series you're doing! My only query is that in the 18th century structured underpinnings were referred to as 'a set of stays' and not 'a corset', that terminology only came in in the 19th century. Corsets usually have a busk, and stays tend to lace at both the front and back, though evidence does exist of stays with only front /or/ back lacing. I'm a historical costumer and underpinnings are my speciality, its a tiny thing, but something that grinds my gears! :)
Thanks Charlotte for the correction! I just checked and it appears that I use stays and corsets interchangeably. I'll make sure to get it right in the future. Perhaps I can call on you in the future for fact checking? 😃
12:44 Corsets on bare skin make me cry
the description is amazing. I have been fascinated by her character transformation projected into her dress. you explained everything so well and you even explained the fabrics, embroidery type, motifs as well as other surface ornamentation methods so well. amazing video indeed!!
+Dina Shrestha Thanks Dina!
So, the right-over-left covering of her gown in S1E7 is probably foreshadowing. That is the way to wrap a kimono for a funeral.
Yeah, I never thought of that but good point. I don't know if Michele Clapton knows the story arc of all of the characters, but it's possible that Dave and Dan hinted at their fates.
The stand-out for me, is that all of Sansa's kimono-styled dresses are right-over-left while she's basically owned by the lannisters. So it could've just started as a nod to Ned's demise, or a state-of-mind of her character.
Except that Cersei wears her gown that way too, although you could argue that under her father's thumb, she is also controlled.
Shoot! I haven't watched that video yet! I know what I'm doing when I get off work!
I don't think I mention that, I just came up with that based upon what you're saying. 😁
Subbed!! This channel is EXACTLY what I've been looking for.
Also thank you for labeling the span of seasons you will be covering.
I left the show to hopefully read the next book first, and knowing how much thought goes into costumes, showing a simple outfit gives away quite a bit.
Hi Cole, it's my pleasure. I started the videos before the show ended so I didn't finish each character, but I did cover them in some of my other videos.
This is such a cool channel. I never thought about the fashions on Game of Thrones. It doesn't help me with my obsession with at all but Im gonna revel in it!
queenofthewhores Thank you! PS I love your name. :)
SO MUCH MORE THAN MEETS THE EYES. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL WORK.
Im so happy I found such a unique channel. The work you did in this video is amazing, keep it up!
+Isla Bogdánov Thank you so much Isla!
I love your uploads so much. I love how you’ve captured all of the symbolism in each character’s costumes through the course of their own individual journey. Fully subscribed here.
Hi Zebra, I'm glad you're here!
this was so damn calming, caught myself almost falling asleep during it lol
Haha, hope I didn't bore you to death. 😁
@@Costume_CO no no lol. Its not boring, just extremely calming to watch. Im not interested I'm clothing and such, but I just found myself playing this in the background to relieve stress 😂
please do an updated version after this season! Her new costumes are so interesting and I'd love to hear your analysis on them
+Emily H Hi Emily, I've covered her new costumes in my weekly analysis. You can check them out.
Oh sorry, I didn't realise you're doing weekly vids, that's great! I love your channel.
NP! Check out the Costumes of Westeros as well. I go into Sansa quite a bit as well along with the Stark family and cover many of her season 7 costumes. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/C6VjkdOCI-U/видео.html
I love your detailed costume videos with all the pictures and background information. Thank you!
+Flobbyoiboyz Thank you for the lovely comment! It's my pleasure.
Those look more like beetle wings, or sycamore tree seeds than butterfly wings on the pin. However this is a great video! Awesome details!
Also this is the first video I've seen and holy crap! Subscribed!
+Sam Yes, I made a correction in a later video. I think they are Weirwood key seeds. Thank you so much for commenting!
I can't help but notice that in scenes where Sansa is wearing either jewelry or clothing fasteners with a 'winged' theme, whether it depicts flying insects or key seeds, that she tends to be in circumstances when she is trapped and a prisoner. Is it a silent wish to fly free of her trapped situation?
What an awesome topic for a video! I'm always amazed with their costumes, and hair! I'm so not into fashion, but I find them beautiful!
I seriously hate Joffree!
Thank you!
Congrats, your analysis is amazing!
Thanks Erica!
great video. please make another for Sansa's costumes in season 6
Hi Lina! Sure, I can do one before the next season comes out!
Omg I'm only seeing your channel now I never knew how much detail goes into the costumes wow you did an amazing job can you please update this for seasons 6 and 7❤️❤️
Thanks so much Ari! You can check out this video to see Sansa Stark costumes for season 6: ruclips.net/video/ritrPZRIEEY/видео.html and I have been doing season 7 recap videos this summer - Sansa's costumes are in there too. You can also check out the Costumes of Westeros Part I for Stark costume breakdowns. Cheers, Heidi.
absolutely amazing video :) keep up the great work
Thank you so much Miriam! Working on a Margaery Tyrell video that I'll hopefully have up in a week or so.
Fantastic! Will you do the same for her season 6-7-8 looks/dresses, pretty please?
Hi Sunny! This is an old video, so I have looked at all of Sansa's other costumes in my other break down videos. Unfortunately, they are not put in one dedicated video, but I will find a few other links for you. 😁
@@Costume_CO Thanks a lot! :)
Really great video! I want to make one of Sansa's Costumes and this vid really helped me :)
I think I'm going to make something from season 1, because I love the Winterfell style and it is one of the easier costumes she wears on the show, even thou her season 6 direwolf dress was really awesome!
Thanks Jokia! You can also look at my pinterest page: www.pinterest.com/costumecinemato/. I have lots of the photos from the video too. I will be doing a season six video for Sansa in the new year so you can look for that.
Amazing videos, great in-depth analysis! It is beautiful...you deserve many more subscribers!
+Sritama Sen Thank you so much!
You're welcome and I have a suggestion. Please do the costumes of Padme Amidala from the SW prequels!
+Sritama Sen I have a request for that. I'll try to get to it in the fall.
Elizabeth of York was not the daughter of Henry VI. She was the daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville.
Amazing video, thank you very much.
Thanks Lisa!
Oh my god. Im so in love with these!
thank you for this analysis :)
It's my pleasure. It's a bit old but it was fun to do.
This is absolutely lovely, thank you so much!
+that is ludicrous Thank you!
Los broches dorados con alas los usa 3 veces, cada vez que se siente libre o protegida ( 1- con los Tyrell, 2- con Tyrion y 3- cuando escapa.)
I've seen a couple of these dresses in person and definitely noticed the great detail on them (although it was a little odd staring at the details of a dress whilst the actress was wearing it). The main difference I seen in them from other characters was that they were one of the few costumes not made to look rugged or worn down.
Were you on set?
Yea I was. Can't talk about any details, but I did meet Sophie Turner and she seemed very down to earth and friendly. To me her costume stood out as it had so many levels of detail to it that I had not seen in other actors costumes (I'm no expert in clothing). Also seen a couple of her KL costumes at the seasons 3 and 4 GOT exibition when it was in Belfast.
Thank you so much for sharing! That's very cool. :)
Having just watched the Margaery video and now this one I notice Cersei has the off the shoulder sleeves you mentioned in Margaery's video (I see it in the photo at the beginning of them at the table in winterfell). So I am thinking that is a style Margaery picked up from the Baratheons and incorporated into her own style, and then later ditched.
+standincub Oh, which outfit do you mean?
Here I am, 2020 on a binge this channel is awesome
Thank you so much Hazel!
love this channel so much! wish there were more videos, this has so much potential :D
Thanks for your comment! I just started in June, but I'm trying to post every two weeks. Next one should be up in the next few days.
This is a minor thing but Elizabeth of York was the daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, not Henry VI. And she married Henry VII.
Hi there, yes, I know I gaffed. This vid is 2 years old. :)
Oh yeah no, no worries, I wasn't at all trying to be negative, I mean your videos are so packed with so much brilliant, detailed information it's only human you can't always get every single little thing right. I just thought I'd point it out :)
I didn't take it that way at all! I just meant that because the video is old, others have already pointed out my mistake. :) I appreciate you commenting. Cheers, Heidi.
Oh ok yeah that makes sense. I should've looked when you uploaded it, my bad. But I absolutely love your channel, found it a few days ago and immediately subscribed!
Thank you so much. I've left up the older ones, but the sound quality and scripting are a little cringy. Haha.
23:13 - Why do you call them "kimono-style sleeves"? I think they're not necessarily inspired by Japan, as far as I remember, for example in medieval Europe, between around 12th and 15th c., there've existed in fashion similar sleeves.
Or is there something more to them that makes them kimono-style? Im just curious.
+xXLadyXerigaXx Great question! Yes, the gowns are definitely medieval/middle ages in nature, but what makes the the sleeves kimono style is the shape. Medieval sleeves are fitted at the upper arm and then flare out into a bell shape, while kimono style are fitted to the elbow and then square off and drop. It's actually a long rectangle shape if you look closely. Also, medieval gowns were not open/crossover style like these gowns, more Han Dynasty and Japanese. I hope this helps, Cheers, Heidi.
+Costume Cinematografico Thank you for such detailed explanation! It was really helpful.
Yes, as I know that the "open/crossover style" was not present in medieval gowns, I was just wandering about those sleeves. Now I understand :)
Best regards!
Those "butterfly closings" are decorative fibulas - a type of medieval brooches. They are not a permanent part of the garments, only clipped into them, so the ones in Mother's Mercy are the exact same she wore throughout the previous seasons. Also, it's only my theory not a fact, but I think the decoration is not butterfly/dragonfly wings but sycamore seeds. I think so because sycamore represents growth, persistence, strength, and endurance - which would be perfect for Sansa, especially since she started to use them when she started fighting back.
CV
+CrimsonVipera Thanks for the comment. This video is rather old now, so I had updated that they are Weirwood clasps, more correctly pennanular brooches which is a later version of a fibula.
I've found that video about five seconds after clicking send on this comment. I still think the sycamore symbolism could be pretty close to home, seeing as Weirwood seems to be inspired by sycamore.
The penannular brooch/fibula distinction is an entirely English thing. No other language has this distinction.
great video! really detailed, which I admire!
you mentioned some japanese words for, I think kinds of kimono (?). could you please write them down. I didn't quite catch the names and would love to look that up more particularly.
greetings from Germany. ;)
Hello Germany! I'm doing closed captioning on all future videos, but for now, I hope this helps:
Kimono wrap gown: Not exactly like the traditional Kimono, but a medieval gown with Japanese influences
hira-nui: a Japanese style satin embroidery stitch or "long and short" stitch
Houppelande: a floor length outergarment from the middle ages
Crinoline: a underskirt hat creates a bell shape
Stay: a type of corset from the 18th century
gorget: a type of armour piece that protects the throat
matelassé: a French word meaning quilted
Thanks very much! Really looking forward to more of your videos. :)
This is such a beautiful channel! I'm loving the videos and have already subscribed! I did want to mention, I read that the insect jewelry she wears in the first season isn't butterflies, but dragonflies. It's a reference to a story she was told when she was younger about a woman and a man called The Prince of Dragonflies. She liked the dragonfly imagery (she wanted her own prince) because of the story and added it into her clothing (which you did show, I didn't realize how detailed it was nor how it was made until I saw it here!!) but it's also used in the series as a foreshadowing technique. I've read about it here: www.quora.com/What-is-the-significance-of-Sansa-Stark-dragonfly-necklace-and-ring-in-season-1, and here: gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Costumes:_Major_Characters#Sansa_Stark . She does have an actual butterfly necklace, but it looks very different (nobodysuspectsthebutterfly.tumblr.com/post/49920877979/thank-you-for-thinking-of-me-sansas-butterfly) that she wears a lot as well, which is also probably used for foreshadowing, since a lot of Sansa's looks show her current situation and yet also how she's evolving. I think this is really shown in that she often wears the same dresses and changes out the dragonfly pendant with the butterfly depending on what's going on in the show. Again, thank you for this channel and I'm going to go through and watch all your videos. I'm loving that you seem to be hitting on a lot of shows and movies I've always loved the costumes in!
Hi Selena, I just checked the script and I did make a booboo because that is clearly her dragonfly necklace, which I then say again in another slide. The ring however is either a butterfly, but on closer inspection might even be a moth. In a later episode, I did decide the closures on her gowns (you know, the metal clasps) are actually weirwood keys and not dragonfly wings. Thanks so much for your keen eye. As I've said, you gals are a bunch of smart cookies.
Thank you, as always, a great one. ☀️
i remember bran using the Tully clasp to mark up the table while studying with the maester
Wow, such a great memory! Was that in season 1?
I think it was. the second you zoomed in on the clasp that scene popped into my head. it really is the details of the show that make it so special!
Absolutely!
Great channel! love it! I do have one thing for you to consider, I don't think the Closures on Sansa's gown are butterflies or dragonflies. They just don't look like that. What they do look exactly like is Maple seeds! Google Maple seeds you will see what I am saying! What if these closures are Wierwood tree seeds!? Just a thought!
+Mr McG You are the only one to have caught my error! I do address this in 10 things I missed in Game of Thrones where I say that I was mistaken and believe that they are actually weirwood keys!
amazing work
Thanks Jem!
I'm really surprised while you were touching on all the imagery of her first wedding dress, that you didn't mention the fact that she was wearing her Lannister pendant again in that scene. This is a really good video though
You're right! My bad, thank you for pointing that out. It shows that Sansa had absolutely no say in her outfit that day. Strange that she would have worn it, however, considering that Joffrey gave it to her. I'm sure that Cersei was behind it. :)
You have to assume, because she wouldn't have been allowed to get rid of it since she was still under their control. Ceseri designed everything for her that day from hair to dress, you'd have to assume she'd control jewlery too
Absolutely! I was trying to imagine that conversation in my mind.
I love the fabric and cut of the dress for her second wedding. I even went online to see if I could find something similar (of course, I'd have to have it sent in from the UK).
If I should ever get married, I'd like a winter wedding. That fabric and a similar dress would be just right.
Hi Rachel, I know the fabric supplier of Sansa's 2nd wedding gown. If you want, I can give you the link. 😁
@@Costume_CO Oooo...please do! I thought for sure it was knitted yarn and one would have to get a knitting machine to recreate it. Had I not watched this video I wouldn't have known it was a patterned fabric.
(BTW, my sister does this kind of work [sort of] for a living. She helps make the Colonial garb that is sold in the shops at Colonial Williamsburg.)
That's very cool! I was in Colonial Williamsburg in High School. I would love to go back again. 😁

@@Costume_CO Thanks! Oooo...it's so pretty! Just sent the link to my sister so she can dream a little.
Why no prices listed? Is it one of those "if you have to ask you can't afford it" situations?
Can you do Outlander when Game of Thrones finishes this year?
Hi Michelle, I thought I replied to you! Yes, I will be doing that show. I'm way behind - just finishing watching season 2. Once GOTs is done, hopefully I can get back to regular shows. Thanks for commenting.
I wonder what she would have said about Sansa's dress with the embroidered Stark direwolf with flowers.
Linda, do you mean the costume designer?
@@Costume_CO Both you and anyone else. I liked that dress the best for Sansa so far.
Here is a link to her season 6 costumes: m.ruclips.net/video/ritrPZRIEEY/видео.html
Elizabeth of York is the daughter of EDWARD IV not Henry VI
+suz hobart Hi Suz, yes thank you I was already corrected on that.
Lol Princess Elizabeth of York. Was the daughter of king Edward the fourth of House York. Her husband was Henry Tudor the 7th of England.
Martin may have taken certain bits and pieces of history and incorporated them in his books, however, to say that he the based the entire story on the "War of the Roses", (know at the time as The Cousin's War), is simply wrong. Let alone, that Sansa Stark is based on Edward IV's daughter, Elizabeth of York, or for that matter her granddaughter Elizabeth I!!
Please note; Prior to the 19th century, "The War of Roses" was known as the "cousins War". The reason being, it was a war among cousins. Despite, being Lancaster against York, they were all infact Plantagenets.
The Plantagenet dynasty ruled from 1154-1457. And none of them owned dragons!
Having read the books, I am almost certain that the plot line has very little to do warring cousins. Perhaps I am mistaken, but nonetheless, and it does, but it would still be story far removed from The Cousins War
Well, I don't know enough about British medieval history to have come up with that on my own. I learned about it on the interwebs of course. Here's one: www.theguardian.com/books/2015/may/29/game-of-thrones-war-of-roses-hbo
As far as the dragons, Martin has said that while no real witches or dragons existed in the middle ages, people still believed in such things: ruclips.net/video/APLoxnEWt0Y/видео.html
I really like your videos
Thanks Barbara!
loved it
Thanks Teona!
Does Sansa repeat her clothes because she's sad and not in the mood of styling herself? Or is it because while under Cersei, they don't take care to commission much clothes for her?
+Claire Lin I think it's a budget thing. Each season, the actors had no more than 3 outfits.
@@Costume_CO which makes sense logically, especially of she's making her own clothes
Come on I'm not the only one who needs that pattern of her traveling coat
You can probably find one on Etsy.
My only gripe with Sansa's costuming is that she wears her corset directly against her skin. Historically a shift or chemise would have always been worn underneath. It was probably really uncomfortable for the actress to wear it without that extra layer
Yes, it's pretty odd. Not sure why they did that tbh. 😁
@@Costume_CO because TV shows almost always do that because sexy and lack of research
Maggie, they also did this in Outlander.
In the beginning she would inspire her clothing and hair from the people she was with
can you please turn down the volume on the music when you make these videos. please.
Hi K, This is one of my first videos. I hope you find the later videos with better sound.
thanks for your reply. your TOP TEN COSTUMES OF SEASON 7 was the first one I viewed and enjoyed, and here I am trying to see them all. Hence a bit surprised by the lousy sound. I wish you would elaborate a little more about the history, comparison, context and application of these costumes, in addition to describing them.
Yeah, that video is 2 years old. In my more recent videos, I try to incorporate the historical references and symbolism.
yes, symbolism references are awesome. the way Screenprism channel does it, if you could do that with the costumes !!! :)
Hiya, K. I get more into that in some of my other videos, although it's not as much my forte and construction and history. 😁
What is the garment called, that both Petyr and Sansa wear, mentioned around 20:47? I love it so much but my Google searches aren't turning anything up!!!
+bansley27 It's called the houppeland. It's a unisex garment from the middle ages. Petyr is wearing a new one in season 7.
Thank you so much!! I think this might be one of my favorite designs.
+bansley27 Yes, it's really gorgeous.
pretty cool. can you relabel them so we can see the correct order in the title.
thank you.
+DramaKing1 Could you please elaborate? I'm not understanding your meaning.
Costume Cinematografico sure. Several of your shows follow an order. In the titles, could you maybe number them in the order you did them? So we know which is first, 2nd, 3rd, etc...
The first one we watched was about Margaery Tyrell, the second we watched was Sansa Stark. It would be cool if I knew the correct order to watch them.
This is just a suggestion, not criticism. :)
+DramaKing1 Okay, I see what you mean! Okay, will do!
Okay, I've numbered them up. Hope that helps. The first few shouldn't matter because they are pretty much stand alone. Cheers, Heidi.
Historically, she's a lot like Anne Neville, actually. Anne was the daughter of the King's right hand, the Earl of Warwick, and she was married off as a pawn for both sides in the Wars of the Roses. First, she married Edward of Lancaster (the son of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou), but when he died in battle, she married Richard III, of the House of York. Since Sansa's first betrothed, Joffrey, is the son of Cersei, who is often compared to the fierce Margaret of Anjou, this seems like an apt comparison. As a bonus, Anne Neville's second husband Richard II was famously rumored to be a hunchback (perhaps a bit like Tyrion's dwarfism) and has been vilified by history as the murderer of his child-king predecessor, Edward V (just like Tyrion was framed for Joffrey's murder).
OUCH! Elizabeth 1 was never recognized as the Queen of Ireland BY THE IRISH OR DOES THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE COLONIZED not matter?- What, all it takes for a "might is right" invader to declare themselves king of someone else's country? They kept trying to wipe us out we kept fighting See Edmund Spenser's View of the State of Ireland 1599. So, FYI. Naming English kings and queens as monarchs of Ireland sends Irish people the message that you are taking sides in an ongoing painful struggle for human rights and independence. You obviously care about details and I love this about your videos so I figured you might want to know......nonetheless great video. Thank you G
I can't believe the didn't have a chemise or anything under her corset.
How do you spell the gorgees? the hip things? on sansa's wedding dress 15:29?
Hi Sayel, it's gorgets.
I don't think the butterfly clasps are butterfly clasps. they look more like bats to me. which Catlyn starks mother was a minisia whent her sigil was a bat.
Hi Cyrene, thank you for commenting! This video is pretty old. In later videos I identify them as sycamore or maple tree keys.
I have some polite feedback, please turn the background music down, you're barely audible. The music is very very loud.
Hey Jessica, thank you for your feedback. This video is very old. I hope you find the levels in my more recent videos satisfactory. 😊
Any chance you could do Sansa's S8 costumes?
Hi E C, I have covered most of Sansa's costumes in my Game of Thrones S8 best costume videos. I'll see if I can find you the link.
Oooo, those filters!! Going thru your vids😍👩👏👏👏💙 can I just say...I HATE CERSEI'S HAIR!!!😂
Hi Kerri, so great to see you here. 😁
@@Costume_CO I just love u. I never noticed all that beautiful embroidery on Sansa's gown. Especially part down side(hip) and gimme one of those petticoats!! I have a strapless dress with petticoat. Found at really cheap place. It's cream with fitted waste and thread for belt loops for black ribbon. U just remembered I had it!😂Thanks again and thanks for being so sweet💖💖 I'm going to turn my daughter, Naomi, to you. She's 16 and loves this stuff. Project Runway us one of her fav shows😃
Right back at you! It was really hard to see some of the embroidery details until I looked at photos and then on Michele Carragher's website, the woman that does the embroidery. She has awesome pictures.
@@Costume_CO I'll have to check those out!! Both my Grandmothers could sew. I should have learned. My Nana made awesome dolls & other Gma made quilts!! I can't even hem!! I have the "Dark Sansa" Funko. I only have @20. She's becoming worth almost $70. My Ygritte is worth $150!!! I don't know if I should sell them. I might wait until end of Season 8!!!💙💖🎬🐺🐲🌹🌸excited for HALLOWEEN!!👿👻💀👾
@@ShadeoftheEvening Are you crazy! Do not sell!
Why Hollywood keeps forgetting stays are worn over chemises or shifts... We'll never know
So true! And I can't imagine that it's comfortable for the actor to have that against their bare skin.
Because sexy and also lack of research or care
Wait... did you mispronounce your own channel name?
Yes, stumbled on that. :(
Costume Cinematografico I guess it even happens to the best then ;)
+PoisonTheOgres Haha! Things were a little bit rough going at the beginning.
Dragonfly necklace!
So many details I've never noticed. It's amazing how much work must have gone into things you see only for a second... To be honest, I guess that I didn't pay too much attention to Sansa, because I never liked her. She only got interesting, when she finally took her life into her own hands and made dogfood out of Ramsey Bolton...
I read that sansa was based on Anne Neville and their stories are insanely similar. Anne was apart of the Neville house, which was of the most powerful houses in England at the time. Anne was married to Marget of Anjou's son (who is the confirmed inspiration for Cersei Lannister). he was known to be physopathic and anne was likely raped by him. Both Margret of Anjoui and her son(anne's husband) were extremely cold and cruel to Anne. Eventually Margeret and her son were killed and Anne was seen as a traitor by the English Court. She was yet again abused by a court but by The English Court this time instead of the French Court. Once the king of England was killed, Anne rose to be Queen.
Thanks for sharing Lulu.
Did you say "the pale blue necklace I decined"
Jojo Nova I'm not sure, I think I said pale blue necklace I designed, quoting Michele Clapton.
I think this is it:
Of Sansa’s necklace, Clapton says, “I looked actually at lots of art deco and art nouveau necklaces…as well was inspired by the same period. It's actually very exciting, I very rarely design jewelry."
Costume Cinematografico Ah okay then 😊
I do not like your opening page, it has no reference to G O T ....... awful !
