It's sad to think viserys genuinely loved his sister once and took care of her when he was a boy, but his disent into madness isn't surprising.
It's them Targaryen genes kicking in. Viserys was unfortunate it came to him early because of the circumstances. If he grew up when Targaryen was still on the throne, he might have grown to be a fine prince. Not as fine as Rhaegar, but fine nonetheless.

@@finnkyrie4569 Targaryen madness was more likely a propaganda, the only Targ who are geinunely born mad were Aerion brightflame, and the guy who starved himself to death. in Aerys case it's understandable because who the fuck wouldnt go mad after being imprisoned and tortured for months. Be more critical when reading through the perspective of characters, if you think about it the Targ madness only come the moment they start outbreeding with the Martells, Dayne and Hightowers.

I’ve always heard two different sides of Viserys when he was young. One said he always had Targaryen madness and another said he was kind boy until the humiliation of giving away his mother’s crown finally rid him of his kindness and left only cruelty.
He was fine when he was younger, he became mad after selling his mother’s crown

It’s a scientific fact that incest babies can be born with mental and physical defects that sometimes don’t start showing until further on in their lives. We hated this guy but unlike Joffrey and Ramsey, he's been through a lot and so it's easier to understand how he eventually broke.
I mean despite how shitty he was I could see it in the portrayal. Specifically the line "The weight of the greatest dynasty in the world on my shoulders since I was seven." That is when it sunk into me that he not only constantly had to struggle to make sure they were not assassinated, but he had to use what little he had avail to try to return the Targs to glory.
What is also crazy is how much Robert hated the Targs. Like if you look at it, he didn't really know Lyanna that well...I think its said somewhere he never actually met her. But his hatred for her abduction was carried over to not just Rhaegar but all Targs. You could say it was because of Aerys burning Ned's father, but wouldn't Ned be the one who is so consumed with Rage? He is actually the one who counsels against killing Dany.
Lyanna knew that he was a chronical cheater and wasn’t interested in Robert at all. Her falling for the prince just hurt his massive ego that’s why he hates them so much. Robert is truly a villain
Robert also mistreated Cersei from the start even when she still glorified him, which changed when he called her lyanna during their first night

Daenerys actually wanted to marry Rhaegar. She romanticised him a lot. Viserys was even angry with her for not being born earlier. Everyone loves Rhaegar and yet no one actually knew him

This is why it was strange that they made her react the way she did to Jon’s parentage….at least that’s how I saw it. She saw him as a threat instead of the ally and security he should have been. Secure him as her consort thus the throne and the north.
I agree. Jon was the last person she needed to be worried about. I also wonder if it's because all the men that were supposed to protect her and provide for her, failed miserably. So maybe shed forgone that possibility completely. Maybe she didn't trust anyone. Maybe this was a part of her storyline of descent into madness. It's very complicated. I do however wish the writers had done a 180 on the scene when Jon tells her. All of us including Jon expected her to feel threatened. And had she instead hugged him. It would've been so wholesome. He was the family she truly deserved.

They don’t even come up with good reasons like for example i seen some say “Her killing the slavers and not negotiating with them first, shows her arc” or “she watched her brother die and didn’t flinch, like it’s still her brother.” None of them make sense and half of these people don’t read the books so they don’t understand her for the most part. I do think she will go mad but maybe while she’s ruling. It wouldn’t just be a snap during war. She’s too smart.

If you read the books, Khal Drogo is actually very kind and good to Danaerys.
Or maybe she realizes things aren’t THAT simple.
What she and Viserys went through while living in exile was horrible, and Viserys as the older sibling had the responsibility to take care of her, even though he was a CHILD himself. He was becoming more and more mentally unstable and eventually he had to die, she knew and accepted that, but it makes sense why she can’t completely hate him even after his death.
I don’t think she hated Dothraki, that was her original army no? She embraces the title of Khaleesi
Its so sad, but lets all remember we have Viserys to thank for keeping Daenerys alive until she got into the Dothraki where she'd later become the mother of dragons.

She tortures and executes without trials all the time, and she never takes accountability for her actions. She is a self righteous tyrant with delusions of grandeur.

She was raised by her half mad brother and then the dothraki, with only one Westerosi simp to occasionally give her reasonable advice. She wasn't only trying to make her way to westeros, she knows poverty and to a degree slavery and wants to free the slaves, but she's been raised by pretty brutal/mad people so her way of going about it is messed up and confused. At one point she also acknowladges her lack of experience and instead or rushing west decides to stay and learn. She got too much power too early. She shows both signs of a tyrant, mostly against those with power, and compassion. I just find her to be an interesting character.
Dude went through hell. He ...unlike danaerys...actually knew his parents and brother and actually felt the bitter sting of their death and loneliness in a way danaerys couldnt. He then protected her until he broke. Tragic that the cruelty of the world drove him to madness. He was a prick but still deserves an oz of compassion and empathy.

Viserys was a good brother considering there circumstances its just that he was obsessed with reclaiming everything that was taken away from them. Think about it soon after watching his mother die he sailed off to bravos where he also watched the only loyal night die as well, after he died the servants stole everything they could before leaving. Then the only thing he had left to remember his roots was his mothers crown and he had to sell it, afterwards viserys went around begging wealthy people to take them in which would eventually kick them out once they found out they were worthless until they found illyrio. He spent his entire life seeing people steal everything from him so he became obsessed with taking them back.

Also I don't remember if that happened in the books also dany wanted to really marry viserys even on her wedding night she wanted to beg him to let her marry him instead of drogo then if I remember viserys met jorah on dany wedding day so I don't think that happened in the books. I remember the scene where visrys was gonna take dany eggs and jorah stopped him but not the grape one

Saera’s descendants would be her great great great great great great great grand-aunt’s great great great great great great great grandchildren aka her 8th cousin. She had closer family in pretty much every city in Westeros that had a Targ bastard in the past 5 generations

Why was it so wrong for her to marry Jon Snow if its okay to marry her brother??
Jon may have Targaryen blood- but he was raised a Northerner. Incest is not something they’re okay with, unless there’s a few degrees of separation (like second cousins). Aunt/nephew would have Not been okay, and could very well have caused the North to label Jon as a traitor.
They don’t really explain it much in the show, but in the books there is a bit more detail about why Targaryen incest is begrudgingly accepted. Unlike in real life where incest usually causes terrible genetic conditions and generally shortens a person’s lifespan, for the Targaryens it’s thought that it does actually keep them “pure”. It keeps their connection to the dragons very strong and is thought to influence if a dragon egg will hatch or not. It also used to be believed that ‘pure’ Targaryens were immune to diseases that would kill commoners- however that one was unfounded, as the very first Daenerys (first daughter of old King Jahaerys and good Queen Alysanne) died in childhood of illness, as did Baelon (Visery’s the 1st father), and many “pure” Targaryen women died in childbirth, or complications therein.
The other reason why Targaryen incest was accepted (despite being against the tenants of the Faith of the Seven) was because Maegor the Cruel (one Aegon the Conqueror’s sons) very nearly destroyed the church completely (bc the Faith was trying to wipe out Valyrian tradition/cause an uprising against the Targaryens since they were technically foreign invaders). When the dust finally settled, the Faith decided to just lay low and let the Targaryens do what they liked, so they didn’t get eaten, or burned alive, by dragons.
@@anjelica948still, family "madness" is probably due to genetic complications because of the incestuous dynasty and triggered by... well, a traumatizing life in a harsh medieval world. But yes, there is way less problems with Targaryen's incest than any other

On the night before Daenerys's wedding, Viserys tried to sleep with his sister. He wanted 'first rights' to his sister before selling her into marriage. He was stopped in his attempt by Illyrio Mopatis, the Magister of Pentos.

The fact that Drogo didn’t know her language but literally waited for her to give consent on their wedding night is one of the reasons I love him so much. Drogo kept questioning her by asking “no?” to make sure she was okay and eventually Dany herself said “yes” without any coercion.
He was a war mongering savage. His relationship with Daenerys was based on force. I swear these Drogo fanboys are the same as Victarion fanboys, they love these characters even more than Grrm himself.

I have always found Viserys to be kind of a tragic character. It seems like most of the Targaryens have a trigger to their madness and his was losing his mother and all that remained of her memory. He was his mother's beloved baby boy until Daenerys was born and the stress of constantly running for their lives and the shame of their situation was likely too much for his young mind. It's easy to say "Not me" but in the same situation i don't think anyone would grow up to be very nice.
Hardly agree until the end. For your statements exactly he hated her for “killing” their mother given how much he loved her. Then he felt like he had to protect the very child that killed his mother. I think him seeing her and having everything go on did make him spiral. But then again to me he was always evil. He treated her like a bastard. You don’t have to be a good person but a decent one wouldn’t abuse you.

Rheagar left Elia and his children for to be with Lyanna stark and after she and her children killed but Martell was know Elia was so alone and unprotected so go to the dorne like piece of cake to catch or kill you
Because Dorne is still apart of Robert’s Kingdom. Robert was on a campaign to completely annihilate the Targaryen dynasty and so he would’ve done ANYTHING to kill Viserys and Dany. And if the Martells did try to harbor the Targaryen siblings as refuges in their custody and protection, Robert would have declared the Martells and all of Dorne as treacherous rogues and ordered war against Dorne. It wasn’t safe to keep them in Westeros. Taking them to Pentos meant they were beyond the crowns reach and Robert has no authority over there.
And even while they were roaming the free cities, they were still targeted by Robert’s assassins.
I kinda wish his character stayed around longer. I mean, his golden crown scene was one of the coolest and most satisfying deaths. The actor was just amazing. It would've been nice to maybe see him get some sort of redemption. Whether it was in the past or not. But Dee wouldn't become who she was, and it is ASOIAF, after all!

It’s heartbreaking to know Viserys was Dany’s protector, teacher, and brother since Viserys was 9years old (after his mother died giving birth to Dany).
You would think Viserys never cared for Danerys, until you realize Dany learned everything about House Targaryen from Viserys (including how to speak Valyrian).
It’s heartbreaking to realize Viserys was Dany’s protector, teacher, and brother since Viserys was 9years old (after his mother died giving birth to Dany).
And Viserys only became abusive when he had to sell their mother’s crown for a pittance, because they were on the street.
It sucks people compare Viserys to Joffrey. Viserys may have been an asshole to Dany, but his conversations with other people made me realize Viserys was nowhere near as insufferable as Joffrey.
E.g.) when Viserys asked Jorah Mormont why he was in exile, Joffrey and Ramsey would have been total douchebags once they heard the answer. Viserys didn’t talk down to Jorah, but simply said he would never have to worry about seeking poachers into slavery if Viserys was King.
Besides when Viserys was drinking, or Viserys’ treatment of Dany, Viserys seemed like an intelligent and pleasant person. He was just blinded at his desire to reclaim his birthright, and his lack of patience really made him an asshole.
It would have hurt so much more to see him change from loving and protective brother to.. that
I’m willing to bet the reason the nobles lost interest on the Targaryen children was because Viserys was such an entitled brat. You can see it when he’s traveling with the Dothraki and he’s making all of the demands while they make fun of him, I’d imagine that had been what happened to him his entire life up to that point!
I don't think the oligarchs in many of the Free Cities were willing to risk going to war with the Iron Throne. They probably just hosted the kids out of novelty but ultimately let them go. Illyrio only took interest in them coz he already have Varys in the Westerosi court.

Yes this is what the show sadly didn’t explain as much as the books. Viserys, if he did have the madness or developed it because of all he went through, wasn’t always the monster he was in the beginning of the books. The guy lost everything at a young age and was forced to flee and defend himself and his sister against people who wanted to see them death. Also in order to survive he had to humiliate himself and entertain more powerfull lords or merchants who would let them stay for a night or give them food. They didn’t always live in the mansion. Looking at him and what we know I also think it is possible he was sexually abused by some of these men, further explaining his decend into madness and his treatment of Dany. I don’t know how people can just blindly accept everything what people say about him and Rhaegar. They put Rhaegar on some kind of pedestal despite all that his actions caused while condaming Viserys
Let me tell you reading this, I didn’t realize there was incest in the book and was so confused when I read “she had always assumed she’d marry Viseries” I had to flip back a few pages just to confirm that I did infact read that right.
Then the show came out and it all made sense

And this is what Lyanna's hypocrisy and Rhaegar's selfishness combined did to both of their families: Lyanna's brother and father murdered, Rhaegar's mother, wife and two kids murdered, Viserys and Daenerys left in poverty, and more or less susceptible to death and rape, with no people left to guide and protect them.

actually I do not believe that Viserys or Daenerys gone mad. maybe became cruel but not mad. they know exactly what they were doing. and the other characters did worse but no one called them crazy. arya killed entire family and feed with human flesh some of them. jon snow killed a child because he betrayed him. stannis and his wife burn alive their little daughter and no one called them crazy. but when dany killed the tarly men after the war she called "crazy". it is totally bullshit.

Harry Lloyd's portrayal is one of the best in the show imo. he also does the narration for the audiobooks for the Dunk & Egg novellas and they are magical.

They both went through a lot for it and i understand why he craves it but he made her go through more for something she didnt want. She wanted to have a childhood, to have a home. Situations took that from both of them but he took more. In reality if there was a real life Viserys and we heard of his stories he would likely be overly hated as deserved. Here it’s seems kinda 50/50. I wish to understand your sympathy for him but I don’t see how you could.

I believe she truly only loved daario, because with Jon it was just a hookup and a political relationship to secure her rule in the north and with Drogo she had no choice since viserys basically sold her forcefully to the dothraki.
I always took Daario as a ''distraction'' for her. Thought that she eventually fell in love with Drogo after he became gentle with her. In my opinion Jorah was the only one who truly deserved her.

Ya so sad. Viserys was kind & took care of his baby sister, Daenerys, the best he could. But humans can only go so far. Once we're hungry & need have no other choice but to sell off our prized family possessions. Just like the homeless/beggars irl, that's why some of them lose their sanity.
