Sorry about missing the Training/Briefing. Recorded this playthrough ahead of time so was unaware at the time it was a different set up. Really didn't expect Opposing Force to have so many new things! Enjoy the playthrough :)
The reason Shepard can use hev chargers and barney can't is because Shepard has a "Powered Combat Vest" or PCV, which is just the hev suit but it's a vest, barney just has a regular vest, which acts like any other vest would
39:47 Security guard: *accidentally kills you by friendly fire* "Erm...i'm just slowing you down.." Lmao Can't get enough of the random Half-Life npc interactions
Love how Mapo has logged 20 hours into the Half-Life series and still manages to be surprised when he enters a new area and finds it contains hostile enemies.
Op Force is definitely my favourite of the Gearbox Addons. Blue Shift brought HD models but was mostly Half Life+, Opposing Force is different enough to feel like a proper expansion. Loving the content, and here's to a great series!
I prefer Blue Shift's level design, plus it's the only game of the three where you actually interact with a unique character in Dr. Rosenberg, so that makes me like the story more too.
25:22 I just choked on my coffee with that. The janky-ness of this game lends to some pretty funny content! Also that last enemy type should be called a Spittin' Chicken.
@@jasonmoustache1693 so he spent weeks playing these just to take a break before a game that’s far better than anything he’s playing currently? Great🤦🏻♂️
@@MrDash711 He's avoiding burnout on the series. Would you rather he blazes through the entire series in a month, without that same energy and enthusiasm? I agree HL2 is the better game, but I'd rather he be excited to play it rather than have to force himself to.
Ah, the good ol' days of yore when Demo Discs were the main way to learn about and experience new games. I think I still have my Op Force demo disc actually, really need to go digging and find it
Mapo! A quick but important heads-up for half-life 2 since you start recording quite ahead of time! The correct order to play half life 2 games is half-life 2, half-life 2 episode 1 and then half-life 2 episode 2. Maybe you've been made aware of it already but you wouldn't be the first person I'd see being confused and starting with episode 1, so I'd rather be safe than sorry :)
In environment design? Not really, no. It's actually less detailed. Blue Shift wasn't even supposed to be a standalone expansion pack. It was supposed to go with Dreamcast port of Half-life like Decay goes with the PS2 port, so of course it's short just like Decay as you weren't supposed to be buying it individually.
I just love how the protagonist in Opposing Forces is called Shepard. Can't avoid references to Mass Effect even though the games are like 10 years apart or something lol
You can't reference something that won't exist for another nine years. Also it's just a surname, you might as well call the main protagonist from Stargate Atlantis a reference if you're setting the bar so low.
50:10 Tiles that break are musty, while those what don't are clean. Opposing Force and Decay are harder than Half-life and Blue Shift, except for the final levels of the original in Xen, so if you struggled with easier games, it makes sense you would have a hard time with a harder one. Thankfully both are short, with Opposing Force being slightly longer than Blue Shift for an hour or so, so you won't have to struggle for long.
In Blue Shift, you see 2 soldiers throwing 2 guards in the canal before getting to the surface and they talk about how Shephard's team didn't make it. The time where Shephard was on the helicopter/Osprey took place during the first hours of the incident, while the rest of the game started during "Surface Tension" chapter from HL1 (Chapter 12) 37:17 About that, Gearbox didn't write the codes right so Otis the guard will only drop the weapon if he draw it.
Man, thank you, first of all. Reliving my youth %) Thanks for spin-offs too! HL Deathmatch was my fav back in the day. Can't wait for Half Life 2! Cheers!
Man, I wish you could play Deus Ex (first one) someday. This game would be just fantastic for you. A lot of lore, and dialogues to enjoy. Seriously, this is masterpiece.
THIS! I’ve always asked for this! Deus Ex (2000) is a masterpiece, and along with Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, they’re both games I’d love Mapocolops to play. Especially Deus Ex, as it has an incredible story, and Mapo is so much into the lore of the games.
Mapo don't make fun of that candy machine police man. After my first playthrough of opposite force I've decided he's my boyfriend and I won't have any slander thrown his way
Barney has only body armour and helmet. Freeman has hev suit, and shepard has special suit (he is part of special unit, h.e.c.u. if i remember correctly), thats why they both can use suit chargers
Tutorial of how to play Opposing Force using a basic pistol instead of the assault rifle or the shotgun! This was my favorite, I loved the soundtrack so much at that time. 50:20 falling ceiling has a humid darker color, easy to see with night vision.
Fun fact: those vortigaunts that come down on the elevator at 19:55 are nicknamed “banjo” and “kazooie” in the game files. There’s tons of funny little jokes hidden in the names of things in op4 and bshift, marphy black did a good video on them.
I wonder if Opposing Force was the very first FPS to use the by now ubiquituous "flying into a secret mission in a helicopter with the doors open which immediately gets shot down" opening?
I know that destroying crates is painfully boring, but actually all kind of crates can have supplies (in fact in the garage at the end of the video there's an RPG in one of the bigger crates). Also the longer you charge your wrench's swing the more damage you can cause
Not that boring, fling a grenade into a room and it destroys up to a dozen crates. Or you can just tear them open with the shotgun, it's only really boring if you go around opening them with a melee weapon while several of your guns have full ammo and you are loaded down with explosives.
28:02 It is possible btw to jump to the green box across the way there from the conveyor and then into the tunnel. Just fyi for future play throughs you might do at your leisure! 😊
"need some more ammo" sums up my entire experience of this game so far. also the zombie kept killing the police officer at the start and i was stuck and had no clue what to do until i watched this. I guess my game glitched The zombie didnt move the next time i restarted.
Opposing Force is pretty brutal with the old instadeath puzzles isn't it! I wonder for that first puzzle with the cargo lift over the electrified goo, whether you could have made the jump without taking damage by moving the lift back to the middle, and used that to get over to the crates next to the exit. Also I completely forgot there were new enemy types in Opposing Force, the evolved headcrab zombies are really cool!
Oh man! Nostalgia! Ive had a cd with a lot of mods for Hl in early 2000s. I took it to school and we installed OpForce to all pcs in our computer class and spent a lot of time playing lan, especially on a map with trolley)
A few pieces of advice... The head crabs always give a low coo which gives away their position. The vortigons have to charge up their electrical blasts before they fire, giving you a few seconds to dodge them. If you shoot an ally soldier, even by accident, nine times out of ten he will fire back.
It was painful to watch you not realize the ceiling tiles had clear indicators which break, they are dark in texture :D Anyway, entertaining as always , Cheers !!

You can tell Opposing Force and Blue Shift weren't made by Valve; you never got this frustrated with the main game IIRC. Gearbox did a good job, but it ain't Valve.
Decay might be a bit problematic because it is two player and on PS2 (although it can be played on PC via an unnofficial port), you can play it single player if you switch between the characters to do the tasks required. I never played it, I hope you do it, so I experience the story here.
Unfortunately as I recorded ahead of time, jumped right in and finished the playthrough before everyone had mentioned to try the training as it's quite a short expansion.
