6:29 Yes that is Gordon. Remember from the main game in the beginning, Gordon is riding the same tram system, and you see a Security guard pounding at a door? That's Barry Calhoun.
I never realize Barney in HL2 is Calhoun untill I looked it up in wiki today. When the first time we met in HL2, "Hey, I'm Barney we met in Black Messa", I was like who the hell are you, I never met you in Half-life 1.
@@fllthdcrb Barney is only ever addressed by first name in HL2 and Episode 1. Blue Shift uses his last name exclusively. There was never any character in HL1 or its expansions that was referred to in-game as Barney, so it's reasonable to expect that someone might not pick up on the connection.
Also, it's not the right Barney. HL2 Barney makes a reference to owing Gordon a beer. That conversation happened when you got to the Sector C labs and get off the train.
Blue Shift is actually generally recommended to play with the HD models on, since the models and the whole expansion were originally meant for a Sega Dreamcast port, but when that got cancelled they got ported over to the original version. It's hard to notice now, but a lot of the environments are more complex in terms of detail to show off the Dreamcast hardware. Also, it's okay to skip the tutorial for Blue Shift, but you should do the tutorial in Opposing Force, since it adds a lot of new mechanics that might seem confusing when encountered normally in the game.
The name is "Barney." This name doesn't show up often. Part of the reason is that in the original HL, all security guards had the model name "monster_barney" so by the time of Blue Shift, everyone was already calling the guards "Barney". So the game primarily uses the surname "Calhoun" to refer to the player character.
18:14 This scene is clever in a way, because the dialogue is composed ENTIRELY out of the lines that scientists and security guards randomly say, and reactions (like yelps of surprise) to certain things, in _HL._ I can only assume they did it as a sort of challenge.
34:15 It felt unnatural because you were supposed to shoot the barrels from above, as the door you were shooting doesn't let the bullets pass. I didn't know you could even do it this way, I am impresssssed.
Just realized that Barney must have been unconscious for quite some time after the elevator crash, considering the military is already here at the end of the video.
If I remember correctly, one of the features of Blue Shift was the HD models, so it would be okay to enable them. Also, the B stands for Barney. :) Edit: If you think back to the Half-Life intro, there was a security guard banging on the door you just entered. That was you right now and yes, that was Gordon going past you. :)
13:55 This is so cool.... It's mind blowing they could do this back in the day with the game. 3 perspective happening at the same time. Half-Life was sure ahead of its time.
25:50 I've been playing through the expansions in preparation for your videos and this is such a mood. The quicksave into casually murdering a "friendly" npc that's getting on my nerves has become a staple of my playthroughs and I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this haha

The Training Room in _Blue Shift_ is pretty boring after the original (especially compared to that in _OpFor_ ), as it's just the same course, but with a Barney* hologram instead of the one of Gina Cross, and some slight changes to the course and instructions. When the game was forcing you to move left, did you try pressing left? This actually still happens in Valve games, and I've always just pressed the direction I'm being forced in and it fixes it
If you wonder _why_ that works, it's because every keystroke has a "down" event for when you start pressing it, and an "up" event for when you release it. If the game sees a "down" for that key but never gets the "up" for whatever reason, it has to assume the key is still being held. Pressing the key again usually fixes that because the game gets the "up" that time.
