To this day, I still think Half Life Alyx is the first and possibly only true Triple A experience in VR. Admittedly I have been taking a break from VR for the past year, so something new might have come along, but certainly I would argue that this is the first true triple A game on VR. And honestly, Valve knocked it out of the park yet again. Half Life 1 and 2 both were revolutionary for their time and Half Life Alyx has most certainly been revolutionary for VR in the sense that its set the bar really high for what a great VR game looks like.

    • @torikenyon
      @torikenyon 2 года назад +11

nah, there’s still no other game that compares with Alyx, and I suspect there won’t be for a long time. This game is quite literally from the future, as it took Valve 5 years and an ungodly amount of money to develop. No other developer in their right mind would spend that much on a VR game due to PC VR’s current niche state. But since Valve owns Steam, they have as much time and money as they want

I also love those huge cables/pipes that crush the buildings of the city in order to power the Citadel: it illustrates perfectly the complete disregard that the Combine has for human existence. Amazing visual storytelling, incredibly evocative. Valve is exceptionally good with that. (Similarly, in HL2, there was this black metal wall that slowly advanced by crushing human buildings.)

Great to see you take on this adventure! Can't wait for the next episode :)
If you're interested in why you might be feeling motion sick in vr, there are usually two main contributing factors. I'm a VR developer myself and had to wrap my mind around the whole thing at some point, so feel free to ask any vr related things that might interest you. :)
VR motion sickness is basically the inverse of feeling sea-sick. This happens when your inner ear (responsible for letting you feel gravity/acceleration) is getting different input than your eyes. For example when you are inside a ship and see a static environment, while your inner ear still perceives the motion of the rocking waves.
In vr it's the opposite.. Your body is static but your eyes see motion. Whenever you experience a change in velocity in the real world your body is trained to automatically counterbalance your center of mass, so you don't just fall over in the direction you were going.
Good news is you can get used to it through a bit of exposure and getting better at predicting what sort of visual feedback your controller inputs will lead to in the game you are playing :)
The other common complaint about VR is getting headaches / tired eyes after a bit of playing. This is also due to your body having developed an automatic mechanism for dealing with things in the real world, which you have to "unlearn" a little bit for vr. It's called the 'Vergence Accommodation Conflict" and deals with how depth perception works for your eyes.
Vergence refers to parallax, eg. your eyes having to different points of view and rotating in their sockets to bring the same object into focus.
Accomodation is how the lens in your eyes has to expand and contact in order to bring incoming light rays into focus on your retina. Lightrays from far away objects reach the eye almost in parallel, requiring a different amount of curvature in the lens than close objects, whose rays are usually more spread out.
Vergence and accommodation are usually linked together and looking at a far away object needs adjustments to both systems. In the current generation of vr however, the screen is always at the same distance to your eyes, no matter how far away the digital object is, meaning you don't actually have to adjust the lens in your eye to a different focus.
This is the same reason why some people going to 3D cinemas used to complain about headaches btw.
Just like with the motion sickness this usually just takes a bit of getting used to and once your brain has learned to decouple the two mechanisms, vr headaches don't really occur the same way anymore.
Hope you guys find this information helpful if you struggle with motion sickness and wish to do something about it before hopping into our glorious Metaverse future ;)

"pro" tip in regards to 'vr legs' & motion sickness: walk in place as you joystick walk in games, it has a two-part result leading to no more motion sickness in a relatively short time span.
PART1 Initially it will help fool your brain that everything is fine because you are walking according to multiple of your senses, so your brain is fairly okay with it (wont really get motion sick anymore, but dont play too long sessions during this part as your brain is still learning this new stuff, 30-45mins max depending on the person, if you start feeling uneasy stop playing, remember how long that was and stop a few minutes before next time) You will get comfortable with using the joystick in a few play sessions (it will no longer feel like somebody pulls a rug out from under your feet when using joystick)
PART2 After doing PART1 for a few play sessions and having gotten comfortable with that, your subconscious will start bothering the conscious part of your brain about how stupid the walking in place bit actually is (i mean, you've always known you were just walking in place so your brain is just going to go "okay you can stop now") & you will likely feel a sort of urge to stop moving your legs all the time (also because fatigue hehe) when you stop walking in place it might feel a little awkward again but this time the awkwardness is much much lower & it will pass super quickly (likely the same play session)
Now you have so called "VR legs"! :D they will get even better over time as you try more games, before you know it you're flinging yourself around as an acrobat in games like climbey, having scary vertigo experiences without getting any sort of motion sickness! Wooh! now you can start working on getting rid of your real world vertigo hehe ^^

I actually think HLA is like a big marvel achievement in the gaming industry. The ideas aren't new, there's been interactable objects and many shooters on VR before. It's something a player has to experience to truly understand.

Yeee was waiting for this, enjoy it & dont read any comments cuz of possible spoilorz!!
Edit: Oh, one thing a moderator should forward to him, a great way to "get vr legs" (read: not get motion sick from joystick movement) is to 'walk in place' as you joystick walk in game, its a weird trick where your brain initially 'stays calm' because you appear to be walking according to several of your body senses (so brain doesnt freak out thinking you've been poisoned) but then after a relatively short period (3-4 play sessions of an hour or so) your brain just goes "hold up this is stupid, just stand still" and then fairly suddenly you'll be fine.
Dont push yourself too far too soon with this, its something pretty much everybody new to VR has to get used too & you shouldn't worry about it too much (but ideally you DO want to train your vr legs sooner rather then later, because once you're used to it joystick walking is so much nicer compared to teleporting)
Edit2: Also good to know, you can teleport up ladders :) (just teleport like normal, when u aim that at ladder it will teleport you to the top of it (or down if you're above it)

I think there's a setting to have that feature with the trigger but im not a 100% sure. Also in all honestly the whole squeeze functionality on the index is a bit meh, it feels wrong trying to squeeze the life out of a piece of plastic 😅

@@jasonmoustache1693 You can still crush the cans and squeeze the bottles on any controller. I believe it's the same button binding as "eject mag." I don't have an index with the pressure-squeeze, so it took me forever to find out that you can still do it with a button.

This was my first VR game ever, and using the Quest 3. It's more mind-blowing when you're the one actually playing it. You really feel like you're there, and the audio of the headset surprisingly emulates surround sound really, really well. I just hope more AAA games, especially longer ones get released.

Mapo you dont have to climb ladders manually, point at one and hold the shift button, wait till the timer fills and youll be teleported up there. Hope this helps!

Honestly, I have played A LOT of VR games and none of them really beat Half Life Alyx. Valve really took it to the next level and showcased just what is possible in a VR game. I just hope other developers follow bc this really raised the bar.

Yeeeees! Yeeeeeeeeeeeesssss!! And yeah, definitely want to take your time, and smell all the roses this game has to smell. I remember reading an interview with some of the designers, and they were enjoying putting so much more detail into each room/space than in previous HL games, because in VR, people spend a lot more time in each room/space, investigating all the nooks and crannies.

  • @BunnLilah

I already played through this a few times and I never noticed the cat! lol also wow the detail in the elevator, I never tried shutting the door again and the Combine soldier actually puts his arm out to stop it. The amount of detail they put into little things is crazy.

Since I don`t see in the near future the posibility of buying a VR head set, i am super excited to watch this Let's Play. You sir have a great channel. Cheers from Argentina
