Hey all, I know many people keep asking for continuous movement on Part 1 of this series, but I am just not capable of doing it while also focusing on commentary, it being recorded etc. The smooth movement disorients me so much and I just feel sick really easy and it just isn't worth that level of discomfort when I am perfectly immersed and happy with shift movement. I will say that I do change to smooth turning in a future episode, which is better than the snap turn for all of us, I think. Recording VR is certainly not perfect but I really do hope you're enjoying watching. I will be giving continuous movement a proper go in a few episodes but don’t expect it to stick if I can’t adjust, but I’ll try ❤️
As someone who is fortunate enough to not suffer from motion sickness, my first playthrough was with shift due to my haptic pad on my controller being broken. When it was fixed I switched to continuous. Having played both ways, I can say you certainly aren't missing out or having a lesser experience by using the shift movement at all. People seem to think it's more immersive but it actuality it's still unnatural to have the character move while you as a player are stood still.
the commentary track when you muted the mic by mistake was actually hilarious! Also, don't try to force your way into continuous movement, use what's best for you, that's why there's more than one way to move in the game. Loving the playthrough!
I'm glad there is accessibility for everyone. I got used to the continuous movement pretty quickly; however, I still haven't gotten used to the continuous turning, having that option on makes me feel sick in literally 5 seconds lmao. It's amazing how snap turning doesn't make you feel sick at all
People will tell you that melee isn't possible in this game, but I know for a fact that I once saw someone kill a combine with a TV 😁 Also make sure to look inside everything! It pays to be a dumpster diver in this game.
Definitely check inside and around everything! Its just fun anyways. I've never personally been able to do melee damage, but you can use objects as shields.
Melee isn't possible. I know who you're talking about, but that combine was probably EXTREMELY weak, that's why he died to the TV. Throwing props at npcs in alyx gives them a really low damage
This is great man. I've been avoiding anything relating to this game for the longest time but since I don't think I'll be able to afford to play it myself in the near future I was stoked to see you are playing it. I knew you'd do the game justice and I can't wait to experience it with you!
i went to vr cafe to play it. Soon after finishing it i bought a vr headset (and it wasn't alyx which convinced me into buying one, it was actually serious sam FE vr, which i also tried in the cafe and realized how much fun a fast-paced game is in vr). And then it took me two years to finally get my hands on a gpu for a not overly unreasonable price - i just recenly got myself a vr-capable pc.
Some non-spoiler-y factoids and details: - I like how you managed to sort of use your wrist pockets before you even had the Russells (when messing with the bottles) and the game was like "yeah sure full size object seems fine", nice bug! 😋 - You can put separate bullets in your backpack/behind your ear too, they will automatically combine with (or magically create) magazines - Alyx was going to be able to use anything (sticks/pipes/etc) as a melee weapon, so you were right in assuming that would be a thing in the subway car, it was even shown in one of the preview video's before release, but it never made it into the final game, they said something about it not feeling immersive enough, 95% sure there's a mod that re-enables it though. - Finding resin and ammo is dynamic, if you dont pick up enough (but need it soon) you will start finding more of it, later on in the game you will find more ammo for the weapon you use the most. (exactly what HL2 did too with its supply crates, the content of those crates was based on your gameplay as well) - To keep it fair (making sure you dont 'cheat') the teleporting in this game takes your body into account, that's why it wouldn't let you go trough the fence at that combine terminal - As much as we can all agree that you should be awarded the title of soap throwing legend, when you throw stuff the game will make assumptions based on your surroundings about what you most likely intended to do, and then it creates a direction and speed for that to happen. This is because throwing items is really odd in VR because of the obvious lack of object/weight/g-force/etc (This is also why the Index tried to "improve throwing sensation" with the "you can let go of the controller"-strap, but its still odd even with that, in most VR games throwing feels janky, so this is a decent solution to that problem) You're gonna love this game even more the further you progress, cant wait for the later parts of this series ^^
resin is not dynamic, there is a guide for all resin locations and it doesn't change (with one exception mentioned in the guide - some extra resin spawns near the first fabricator if you have none in the backpack). As for bullets, i think it's only for the shotgun. There are no stray pistol bullets in alyx as far as i'm aware. But i will check (stray bullets can be ejected by cocking the pistol, i don't think it's possible to pick them up, but i'm not 100% sure)
The part about the game making assumptions on where you want to throw things is false. It does no such thing. It does not have the necessary context for that. What it does do is guide things towards your hand when you flick it, even after you move your hand after flicking.
So, I haven't played *any* VR stuff in my life, so don't take my word on it :D, but from what I've seen, Valve seemed to do to the medium what they did to the FPS genre back in '98.
@@FearTheRetroNPC Actually, they did not. Both are great games that pushed VR a little forward, but Alyx was released too shortly after boneworks to have been influenced by it. It probably would have benefited Alyx a lot.

Gravity gloves are one of the most natural feeling, awesome things ever for me! After playing the game I literally felt grief that we didn’t have them in real life!
And so, we have reached the "Desk Punching" Era of the channel, haha. I've heard from a lot of different people that this game is so damn immersive that they've instinctively tried gravity gloving objects in real life after extended sessions of Alyx. That's how you know a game is good, lol
Also wow Narrator Mapo is such a dick to Let's Player Mapo, love it! I need to add Narrator Mapo and Let's Player Mapo as separate characters in the Mapocolops Lore Tome now
I was bad at catching small things thrown at me. After Alyx I have learned it in real life. I am not kidding this really happened! VR trained me to be able to catch small stuff thrown at me in real life.
Lol I never tried using it IRL, but I did manage to punch my desk, my wall, and while crouched on the floor, my trashcan. At least the last one didn't hurt.
58:20 BTW if you ever seen any of these box/crates that you are keep passing they are meant to be picked up and smash on the ground and get what ever items in them
I laughed so hard when you picked up the juice box from the fridge and said "all right, I'll take the kok" when it reads Juice in Russian which is pronounced like Sock. Judging by a lot of Russian labguage and even the fact Alyx had to go to what almost sounded like Nevsky Prospect, this city was supposed to be Saint Petersburg, Russia. I was there few times and all the architecture just gives out that city vibe
Pro tip: turn on your phones voice recorder whenever you're recording a play session, in case you ever accidentally bump your mic off again, you'll have a backup haha.
i have a challenge for you! wear a mask the whole game! it can be done. i have done it and i am proud of myself for it. also, i rather you move the way you want to. smooth movement is not for everyone. even that took me a while to get used to. also, i do love how you are taking your time, exploring! honestly this game is breath taking
Since some of the playthroughs are nearing their end on the channel I'd like to wholeheartedly recommend you my personal GOTY 2021 - Returnal. Since you are a fan of Souls games and Sci-Fi I think you would enjoy it as much as I did! The attention to detail and the challenge it provides are comparable to a Fromsoft game and the Sci-Fi setting is a mixture of Alien and H.P. Lovecraft. I'd love to see you play it on the channel!
This game is beautiful and extremely well designed and programmed, to have such a deep level of interactivity. I will say this, though: Despite how immersive VR action games like this have become, they still I don't think will ever approach the frenetic pace of non-VR. I say this because you have to realize how clunky interacting with VR is versus just through a controller. So were a VR game to throw the sheer numbers of enemies at you at once that HL2 did, you would die almost immediately because of disorientation and lack of player agency. In other words, developers still have to take things slower and more paced in VR, at least for the foreseeable future.
Canned meat stew or just stew for shirt. We Russians call it "Tushonka" (Тушёнка). This is a very tasty and expensive meat, it is usually beef, rabbit or venison.
On my first playthrough I used the same movement mode that you are using - no regrets at all - and in my subsequent playthroughs (once I was used enough to VR) I am using continuous movement. The game was developed with all these types of movement in mind, Valve made sure that you wouldn't miss out on the experience by choosing one type of movement over the other, so use whichever is most comfortable to you, this playthrough series is awesome!
So you noticed while you were muted that you were missing your helmet, and the game never really explains this... If you're wearing a helmet and a barnacle catches you, it will take the helmet instead! So headwear functions as a little "get out of head-nom free" card! Plus, you get to wear a helmet and feel like 3% safer in this decidedly not safe environment, so that's nice
Loved the commentary track :) About continues movement, it's different for every person but most people can get used it it after some time. So here is something you might want to try out. After you finished your stream, and are comfy in VR, hang around in the level a bit longer and practice with very slow movement for a few minutes or whatever works for you. That way you can train yourself over time and you will probably be able to do it longer and faster. But if that doesn't work for you that's fine too, everybody is different.
@@Mapocolops ok, i got the solution: get green bed sheets and put your bed on its side so it becomes the new green screen. or better yet, play VR ON TOP of your bed so you can bounce up and down to avoid the combine’s bullets
22:54 late comment so you probably wont see but the reason you can't unscrew the bottles is because there isnt actually any liquid inside of them. the liquid effect is actually just a shader applied to the outside of the bottle texture, the inside is completely empty.
I don't think it really warrants any surprise or discussion...Alyx was already an established and fully voiced character prior to being a protagonist. It would be incredibly weird to make her mute at this point. Barney was a silent protagonist first, before becoming a fully voiced and established character, by contrast.
@@leojwolfhouse8746 Both security officers and other hecu soldiers like Adrian had stablished voices Back then Barney calhoun wasn't exactly the character he is now, yes, but every security officer was a "barney", which is the voice he still has in Half-life 2 So i think the "she speaks because it's not gordon" is not really the reason here, they are trying something different And it's cool
@@TheEnd5632 Scientists had voices too, but that doesn't mean Gordon gets a scientist voice. I don't think "she speaks because it's not Gordon" is the reason either. The bottom line is that Alyx already had a voice before she was a playable character. That's it. Simple. The only think I'll say is I thoroughly wish Merle still voiced Alyx. I thought it made total sense to change voice actors because so much time had passed, but then I found out that the replacement, Ozioma, is the same age as Merle...40-something! That really annoyed me. If you are going to have a 40-something voice a teenager, just stick with the original voice actor who is 40-something. Anyway. Cheers.
@@leojwolfhouse8746 you do have a point there But i still think it's cool about having a Half-life game without a silent protagonist And about alyx, maybe they wanted a younger sounding voice?
Something to be aware of with the pistol and reloading. Don't cock back the slide unless it's already in the slide back position. The gun will let you know when the magazine is empty, but you might still have a round in the chamber. By cocking it back, you are sending a perfectly good chambered round out the ejection port. You should preferably use the slide release button. *looks like you figured it out later in the video from when I commented this*

@@lilsleepy1469 Wireless is nice but seeing how sensitive he is with motion sickness I strongly disagree with using it because it adds either worse tracking or picture. With a cable you can move around enough, he doesn't need to wander the whole room because then we will not be able to see or hear him :D He may need just one normal step + arm length in all directions. A round carpet or similar to feel where he is. Maybe another shape to also know which direction he is facing without looking.
Fun fact: If you're wearing a construction helmet or hat/bucket, it will actually save you if you walk into a barnacle and it grabs the helmet instead of you.
1:06:03 and this ladies and gentleman, is why you use continuous movement ! (i am aware that he gets "sick" from it, but with training, you get past it. why go through the trouble ? Because certain games only have continuous, like Boneworks ! It's also way better for immersion and recording as well, I hope he gives it a serious go later)
Wish you will overcome your dizziness from playing vr games and try out Boneworks. This game is inspired by Half-Life and Portal, employs physics in puzzles, movement and combat, so you'll love it, but it doesn't have teleports in it as an intentional design part, so you need to get used to vr locomotion before you tackle it. A game that may be your entry point for VR locomotion is The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners. The movement there is rather slow, so you can get used to it easier, but the meele combat is really satisfying
I love the part when he mutes himself..... It made me confused while doing something in the sidelines I thought it moved on to another video. It was kinda weird due to the fact that you always conclude an episode.
I have a boundary system in place, but it is a little redundant because I don’t have a suitable safe area in my set up anyway lol. My guardian does pop up for my desk but I still get immersed to the point I may smack the desk lol

Simillar thing, after playing boneworks i for some time was turning my head in the direction i intended to walk to.
I can confirm that you do indeed try to gravity glove stuff irl after playing the game for a long time.
1:11:13 Love the longer video. Continue to play with your environment but I know you want to press on.
The commentary track was absolutely gold
Ima try it
Edit: nvm is ps5 exclusive. Dang. It looks good too.
@@zeallust8542 Sony announced that there might be more first party games coming to PC soon, from what I've heard. Returnal might be one of them
@@CroJordan That'd be cool. I like how many Sony titles have come to PC lately, its been great.
hey man i love your half life play throughs! it was hilarious when your mic was muted, good effort on the commentary! XD
Commentary track was S-tier
Your "mute commentary" segment gave me some strong Wheatley vibes. It was hilarious!
For ladder climbing, I believe there’s an option to just hold the select on it to climb it instantly
He kinda had it in the first episode. I think you just have to hold it and let go of something in order to fly up the ladder.
Works for headcrabs too
@@zeallust8542 Oh that's cool! They really thought of everything with this game :D
Watching you smack around dead zombies and try to wear the headcrab as a hat reminded me...
...of how much I want to see Howtobasic play this game.
Maan, there are soo many good clips for a compilation. Loved the commentary bte
Loved the commentary track :)
About continues movement, it's different for every person but most people can get used it it after some time.
I'm sure there's a weapon switch to holster the gun 😁
We all goof up sometimes, man. It’s fine.
Please stand farther away from your desk!!!
My back is literally up against a green screen, I state that right at the start lmao
@@Mapocolops could you move the green screen back?
@@torikenyon no I cannot, as it is right against my bed lol I am making do with the space available :)
@@Mapocolops ok, i got the solution: get green bed sheets and put your bed on its side so it becomes the new green screen. or better yet, play VR ON TOP of your bed so you can bounce up and down to avoid the combine’s bullets
@@Mapocolops Time to get rid of that bed, sleep is for the weak!
i didn't think this existed wow yay 😁 I'm gonna enjoy watching this so much
22:54 late comment so you probably wont see but the reason you can't unscrew the bottles is because there isnt actually any liquid inside of them. the liquid effect is actually just a shader applied to the outside of the bottle texture, the inside is completely empty.
Something i don't see people talking about enough is that, this is the first Half-Life game where the protagonist talks
I don't think it really warrants any surprise or discussion...Alyx was already an established and fully voiced character prior to being a protagonist. It would be incredibly weird to make her mute at this point. Barney was a silent protagonist first, before becoming a fully voiced and established character, by contrast.
@@leojwolfhouse8746 Both security officers and other hecu soldiers like Adrian had stablished voices
Back then Barney calhoun wasn't exactly the character he is now, yes, but every security officer was a "barney", which is the voice he still has in Half-life 2
So i think the "she speaks because it's not gordon" is not really the reason here, they are trying something different
And it's cool
Anyway. Cheers.
@@leojwolfhouse8746 you do have a point there
But i still think it's cool about having a Half-life game without a silent protagonist
And about alyx, maybe they wanted a younger sounding voice?
@@TheEnd5632 If they wanted a younger sounding voice, whyd they pick somebody practically the same age?
Something to be aware of with the pistol and reloading. Don't cock back the slide unless it's already in the slide back position. The gun will let you know when the magazine is empty, but you might still have a round in the chamber. By cocking it back, you are sending a perfectly good chambered round out the ejection port. You should preferably use the slide release button. *looks like you figured it out later in the video from when I commented this*
Mapo: "I'll take the "Cok" if you don't mind."
What I hear: ... well, you know what...
What I saw: Bottle of orange juice.
Got laugh on it. Sometimes I forget, not everyone know russian language.
Lol head crab in the fridge 🤣
You need a room with more space, you would be more immersed = more fun :D
Yeah I moved my coffee table to the side and now have like 2,5m x 3m space. That's very handy.
he needs to play wireless first or he won't be able to move around anyway
@@lilsleepy1469 Wireless is nice but seeing how sensitive he is with motion sickness I strongly disagree with using it because it adds either worse tracking or picture.
With a cable you can move around enough, he doesn't need to wander the whole room because then we will not be able to see or hear him :D
He may need just one normal step + arm length in all directions. A round carpet or similar to feel where he is. Maybe another shape to also know which direction he is facing without looking.
@@lilsleepy1469
You don't need wireless to move around a big space. VR cables are typically quite long.
@@sidicle6537 yeah but you cant turn around too much or you'll end up in a bdsm situation alone in your room
You can actally block Headcrabs with any objects you can pick up, like not even touch you kind of blocking
9:10 pure joy
Would you ever consider doing a playthrough of a metroid game? I ask because zero mission is shown in your intro
I love the part when he mutes himself..... It made me confused while doing something in the sidelines I thought it moved on to another video. It was kinda weird due to the fact that you always conclude an episode.
Are you unable to use your headsets boundary system? You should be able to see where your safe area is
I have a boundary system in place, but it is a little redundant because I don’t have a suitable safe area in my set up anyway lol.
My guardian does pop up for my desk but I still get immersed to the point I may smack the desk lol
@@Mapocolops there are likely visibility settings if you're starting to tune it out. Changing colors and patterns and stuff
@@Mapocolops hehe, i did smash quite a few things while VR-ing. One of the last one was when i decided to knife off a gem from a ceiling in resdent evil 4. I jumped up and... smashed my lighting fixture. I did get that gem though ;)
it hurts to see him ignore the supply crates
Hey man I loved the first video and haven't even finished this one yet. (I'm at the point where you get the gun)
I just wanted to tell you that you can change the settings so that the gun will be in your left hand. Gotta look out for my fellow lefties ;D
2:50. Is the best thing yet
Cok on russian is juice
"i wont mess with your "special" drink. i'll take the cok, if you don't mind."
Am I also playing this right know. Amazing game :)
the mic getting muted sucks because I was waiting for his reaction to the first zombie
25:23 lol Bottoms up!
MAPO WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO DO HERE 30:28
Lmao
One more thing though... You don't need to eject the bullet from chamber every time you reload not empty mag:))
UPD: so, you figured it out, good job
can we have a commentary track to every video now
He's gonna upgrade the pistol with the reflex sight , isn't he?
Edit: yup
9:34: The average male brain at least 5 times per day.
I'm loving the enthusiasm and I think the accidental mute was hilarious. I do hope though that as we move on you'll start getting more immersed in the story of the game and treat it a little less like an impressive simulation. For me watching someone live the story crafted by valve is a lot cooler than someone trying to throw or poke every single thing in the physics engine.
I am definitely doing both! When the story is happening I am definitely paying attention but the game has a lot of pure gameplay in between those moments so you’ll see more fucking around as a result. Trust that I’m paying attention to the story as I’m super invested in the series
Did you know you can have a floating window in the VR space place it to the far right or left if you wanted I think another streamer did it for the game so they could see the twitch chat etc
I don't livestream my blind playthroughs, so no need :)
@@Mapocolops I just ment so you could see if your muted etc 😄
I used that feature to let class videos play while I played beat saber lol
The interesting part is not so much the game as it is the player, it's ok to try new ways of playing but if you're not comfortable or enjoying yourself, it'll be most likely that we won't either so do what's best for your experiencie
Very nice and impressive detail. But I would get so dizzy and nauseous from playing a shooter game this way, where you have to involve your entire body and constantly move your head.
Have you tried recording your voice with the headset mic?
