Brian, I have a 94 F150, which I replaced my rear tank with a Spectra. Now my brother is replacing his 95 F150 side (or front) tank with a Spectra fuel tank. In both cases, the wiring appears to be the same colors as you mentioned in the video. So the video works for both the front or rear fuel tank. Thanks for the helpful video! So when will you start working as a sales rep with Spectra? LOL!!!

I have done electronic installations and electrical work for many years and every industry seems to have their own color codes. But on these fuel pumps it seems ;like they just chose random colors. Junior engineers? After we had the tank in place I realized we didn't have the correct wiring diagram. The only solution that I could think of was pull the tank back out, remove both pumps to compare the wiring. But then I found a youtube video that referred to your video. So, I came over here and got the information that I needed. My son asked me how sure was I that this wiring was correct. I said 95% and that is how we wired it, and it did work. You saved us a lot of time and effort. Thank you.

Thank you for the video Brian! We used it to replace the fuel pump on my son's F-150 but with a twist! The fuel pump power wire must be broken on down the line because someone spliced into it and ran a black wire all the way to the front of the truck. I still haven't figured out what it is connected to on that end but it cycles the pump perfectly. Thanks again!

Thanks. Good info. I’m currently replacing both front and rear tanks and fuel sending/lift assemblies, fuel selector valve, fuel bowl. Already replaced the mechanical fuel pump a couple months ago. Lots of rust in the old front tank and old fuel bowl. Cleaned out old fuel lines and they are in really good shape. My truck is a 1997 F350 7.3 power stroke. Keeps me busy and I’m learning a lot

You are the man. I used basic process of elimination with the colors that did make sense and only had the orange (vehicle) and black (harness) wire so I was pretty sure. But used your video to validate. We matched! Thanks for the bode of confidence!! Can’t believe I just pulled an original pump out of a 1995 vehicle! (Old one has Ford stamped on top so if it’s not original, it was definitely a dealer job and this baby hasn’t seen a dealership since I was in grade school)

I’m going to use this this weekend! I have a 92 F250 4x4 with 351 and I didn’t know if it even matters but just finding the correct fuel pump online was hard. Apparently ford has a lot of sub models. I need a pump for the side tank but found that ford has 16gal, 18gal, 19gal and there’s a two tube and a three tube fuel pump! My truck appears to be a 19gal 2tube pump! Hope I bought the correct pump. working on this ford reminded me why I only buy Chevy or Dodge.

Good video. I'm not sure why any manufacturer would change the colors from one side of the plug to the other, but they do sometimes. I leave the stock plug alone and splice near the pump assembly, looking where the wires go on the inside (pump side) of both units and splice accordingly. Don't use those crappy crimp connectors anywhere that there will be moisture unless you use heat shrink with sealant. Talking about wiring, I worked on a ford tractor where every wire was black. Each wire had a printed number such as B21 stamped along its length to identify them. I spliced the wires on a replacement ford blower motor, orange to orange black to black. really simple but motor ran backwards, Had to go orange to black. Who's dumb idea was this. manufacturer should just have made both wires black.

Thanks for the video and info. I have a 1996 Ford F 250. I put in a new rear tank and fuel pump. They came together as a kit that I got thru A 1 Auto. All of the electrical connections fit. When I turn the key on I can hear the pump come on for a couple of seconds like it is supposed to. The pump is not pumping gas. Its not even pumping up to the filter. I took the line off that goes in to the filter and nothing comes out when I turn the key on. I put 4 gallons in the tank and the gauge seems to be working. Its shows a little less than a quarter of a tank. Any suggestions? Thanks

I'm in the same boat right now but I don't like where I have to cut the harness of my truck. Just wondering if you could cut/ splice the connector off your old fuel pump, wire in the adapter harness off the new pump and just plug it into the factory harness so you don't have to cut the connector off the truck. Just wondering if you think that would work

I had the same problem, my 93 f150 had a rusted tank and we decided to swap the pump as well since it was starting to not send fuel as good. When we installed the new pump and put the tank back in and tried to start the truck, the pump relay was clicking and we could hear the pump make a sound, but no fuel was being sent to the engine. The fuel couldn't even make it to the filter so Im wondering if I got a faulty pump or if something else is wrong with it. I tested the lines and their fine, I can suck fuel from the to tank to where the filter is, but the pump isn't working. PLEASE HELP

Great vid! I'm replacing the FP on my side tank. 1996 F150 351W Eddie Bower. The FP I got from Amazon came with a new connector and similar instructions for the new wiring. My confusion ,at this point, is that the new FP plugs right into the factory connector going to the engine bay. So, my confusion or question is, if the new harness has the proper connector to plug into the factory harness is the rewiring necessary?

Brian, I have an 86 F150 4.9 engine mechanical fuel pump, with wire colors that are (yellow w/ white stripe and a solid black) I recently replaced the 86 cab with an 89 cab with a 5.0 engine.
How can I connect the fuel sending wires of the 86 to the fuel switch selector of the 89? The colors of the 89 F150 cab are as follows (yellow w/ blue stripe, yellow w/ white stripe, brown w/white stripe, light blue w/ yellow stripe, red w/ yellow stripe and solid red.)
I never get an accurate gas reading, as the fuel gauge either reads past full, or half. I bought a brand new sending unit to help, but since I don't have the wire connected correctly, It doesn't read correctly.

Hello Brian could you please explain to me the details about the check valve gone bad and the symptoms found to lead you to the change? I was wondering how come my front fuel tank was full to cap and have not been filling it and only using my rear tank with active level indication. If I use my front fuel tank I use my trip odometer to figure where I am at fuel tank capacity.
Funny thing, when I run off front tank I get no hesitations, but in my rear it hesitates once in a while while slowing down, then increasing speed.

The new fuel pump’s connector did not match the one on the vehicle. So I used the old connector and wired everything myself. For some strange reason, I assumed that the red wire from the fuel pump was positive. Boy was I wrong. The gray is positive and the red was actually supposed to be purple. But with my luck, the colors came all f’d up.

This is good, though I was looking for something else but this may help me anyway- For one, that note about the rear tank CHECK VALVE on the pump, not working, and sending gasoline back to the front tank...Hey, that takes the mystery out of so much- Why my rear tank was dry in no time but the front had a half tank, but I didn't put gas in it...
Right now I have seven different error codes with the CHECK ENGINE light- Purge Valve, oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor...just to name a few. But after replacing the purge valve sensor, it still says it's faulty, but I hear it click ON and off...working. I'm thinking that these seven may be on the same designated wiring harness (?). That's the video I was looking for, but this was stil educational.

year old comment but if anyone is reading this is the way to go, never cut the factory harness! unless the wiring is damaged. spectra is shipping these with both style connectors now(atleast both that I purchased) so if the connector that is already on it doesn't fit you can cut it off and splice the other connector on.

Had a quick question if anybody happens to know. My 95-wiring harness has the colors orange, blue/yellow stripe, black and red. I can't seem to figure out the correct wiring setup. If anybody has any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I believe That's the front pump harness. Orange is pump ground
      Red is pump power
      Blue/yellow stripe is guage power
      Black is guage ground
      Aftermarket wires
      Gray pump power
      Black pump ground
      Purple guage power
      Black/white stripe guage ground
Hope you've solved your issues but this could maybe help others doing front fuel pump aftermarket wiring.

You seem to know what you're talking about, so I'm going to ask you , after i had the fuel pump installed , my battery keeps dying ! So i noticed that when the battery cables are on positive and negative, there is instant power to the fuel pump ! The key isn't even in the ignition !!! Is it wired wrong ?

John Vargo - yes, sounds like it's wired wrong... or a ground problem. It's almost like your pump is direct wired skipping the ignition switch. I have to think about this one for a bit and get back to you... if you want a quick fix, you can put a kill switch on the positive terminal and turn it off when not in use. www.eastwood.com/battery-shutoff-switch-w-instructions.html?SRCCODE=PLA00020&product_id=%7Bproduct_id%7D&adpos=1o1&creative=83580267780&device=m&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CISLk7PR9tQCFZK3wAodLxkLww

Have you tried a complete jump wire from the positive battery to the pump, to bypass everything in between? You can also try a jump ground, or both... If doesn't help, I found this post from a ford forum. Hope you find your problem! Best of luck!!! www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1107108-voltage-required-to-start-fuel-pump.html

Hey Brian, I have a new Delphi pump in a new rear Spectra fuel tank of my '96 F150 4.9 4x4. It's only making about 45-50 psi, when the 4.9 requires 55-60 psi. I changed my fuel filter shortly before the tank & pump were swapped. I've also replaced the fuel tank selector switch. What do you think could be the problem? Do I just have a new pump that's weak & should be warranteed out? Should I change the fuel filter again? I'd really appreciate your input. It's driving me crazy because I've replaced a lot of parts and it runs great until I'm under significant load.
