  • While replacing the fuel pump on my 1996 Ford E-350 Econoline van, I found a big issue with the wiring. the fuel pump I pulled out of the van was most certainly aftermarket because the wires did not match up correctly. It turned out the grounds for the fuel pump and sender unit were mixed up. The vehicle did run but had fuel delivery issues. Having these grounds swapped can certainly cause excessive voltage drop issues with the fuel pump due to the wire size difference. Never trust an aftermarket part is simply plug and play. I show you how I fixed this issue so the new pump won't have a voltage drop issue this time around. I hope you found this video useful and thanks for watching!

You deserve a prize!!! You just saved me an enormous headache. I am doing the same with my gas tank as you did and I found that the color code wiring from Delphi does not match Ford e350 wire colors. So I am following your color swap chart with the Delphi pig tail and I believe it will work. Thank you!!!

hey thank you! glad to help. crazy how the wiring is different on some of these van, the 2 thick wires on the factory harness should be the power and ground for the pump and the 2 thinner wires are the sender power and ground. the colors could be different depending on the year of the van too. best of luck

I’ve checked your first video “drain the fuel tank” and I think you said that the aftermarket fuel pump wiring was messed up and didn’t match the van side wires.
On this one it seems that you’re changing the van side wires (pigtail) to match the fuel pump wires.
Questions: Was there ever anything wrong with the van side of the wiring? Did the new replacement Delphi fuel pump wires not go to the correct place if you just plugged them in? Bottom line - did you have to change the van side plug so the wires went to the correct places on the messed up aftermarket pump?

yeah the new Delphi pump wires would have been mixed up like the one I pulled out if I plugged it in. not sure why. the van side of the harness is factory and didn't look messed with at all, not sure why this is the case. you might be able to swap pins around in the connector but I thought I would just have 2 new connectors to prevent any voltage drop on old contacts

Well that sucks! Apparently two new cross wired pump assemblies have been purchased for your van. Delphi is, or was, a big name supplier. Matching that fuel injector pump assembly was complicated. I noticed that one of your new plugs even had the slot to accept the little nylon mounting stud. It’s hard to believe that somewhere in the design process someone didn’t say “Hey! Let’s make sure the wires are correct!”
