If you do not own a light tester like he uses to find the constant 12v, and accessory 12v then you can use a volt meter on continuity function and it will make a sound when it completes a circuit. Just connect the red (+) of the voltmeter to the wire, and the black (-) probe to a ground like he did in the video.
.... Thats nice and all.. But if you dont own a test light, chances are you dont own a multimeter. Test light $1. Multimeter $30. Unless you get a freebie from HF.

46 yr old chic followed these (easy to understand) instructions to connect my 1st car stereo & it sounds great! Ladies...if I can do it, so can you. Thank you for the video.
I struggled for two days trying to install a new BT JVC head unit into my 2005 Elantra and even took the head unit to a radio installer for help but even after offering to pay for their time they just wanted the car and the job so I gave up. The problem was the plug on the end of the harness just would not budge so I cut the factory wires and just tried to connect using the details on the old head unit and the new one but just could not get it to power up. I had checked the under bonnet fuse and the under dash fuse for radio and both were fine. This video recommended using a light up probe which I purchased at Supercheap for $10. Still no power then when I listened to the instructions again the fuse that controls the interior light was mentioned and when I checked it was blown and all of a sudden light on the roof and power into the head unit. The rest was easy. Great advice, saved probably $150 to $200 because they would have found a thousand reasons to justify the charge so very happy with result and have now subscribed..Grant Tasmania Aust
i love you, i had a mechanic install a radio for me and he cut the harness off i was ready to give up and i thought that there was no hope THANK YOU!!!!!!!
This really is a top notch explanation of what each wire is and will still be valuable even when using a harness just to know how things function. No other video has come close to yours in covering this. I can't find the video that details out the steering wheel controls. Did you decide not to make one? If so, please reconsider making one with the same level of detail and explanation you did with this one. Thanks in advance.
Thank you sir. Had my van into the shop to supply and fit a new head unit as the previous owner butchered the wiring. They were unable to fit it and told me to try elsewhere. I watched your video to see how it's done and managed to wire it in myself! Thank you very much.
Wow it really helped me out! Someone who was frustrated with unavailable harness for the vehicle, should watch this. I have successfully installed my aftermarket one. 👍
Just curious how your install went. I'm direct wiring an aftermarket unit myself currently and a small part of me wishes that I had just spent the extra money on an adapter harness. This job can be a challenge for someone like me who has little experience with electrical stuff.
@@ThatNoFbody-ch9ky it went well. I looked up a wiring diagram on the internet for my vehicle. Downside is I lost my steering wheel controls but the rest is fine.

Soldering and marine heat shrink then wrap makes for a much more reliable wire connection over crimps plus a nice smooth harness when finished. Marine heat shrink has a waterproof glue inside and you get a nice sealed joint every time. Apart from that a great presentation by this guy.

Good morning sir. Just wanted to say thank you for the information you have provided here. Am currently attempting to install an aftermarket single DIN stereo unit in my car and I entered the project not knowing a single thing about wiring. Am entering day 2 here because I ran out of sunlight. I do not have the adapter harness for my year range so I decided to direct wire the unit to the factory connections, and BOY is this job a headache. I mapped out which wire goes to what thanks to some wiring diagrams I found on RUclips and thanks to your video I think I have obtained the knowledge to finish wiring everything to the new stereo. Hopefully I will complete this by today so I can enjoy music once again and also hoping that nothing was done incorrectly. I appreciate your work here. Thanks.

Hey I have a question, my car’s stereo is a copper wire while the wires on my car are silver (aluminum, i guess?) can I connect them or will there be any problem?
Wire's wire, you will eventually get dissimilar metal corrosion, but it will work just fine. After about a year or so, you may need to check the connections, especially if you live near the ocean, but just follow the directions and put it in.
The wires aren't silver. They looked silver because the copper wires are tinned before its wrapped with insulation. Tinned wires help with corrosion. Just wire everything up and you'll be fine.

@@lilacne7560 I ended up hard wiring everything. Only thing I could figure is have to get maybe special harness from manufacturer because my car has that feature where radio stays on after you turn key for couple minutes unless you open the door. Some kind of timing feature
@@lilacne7560 I started with that one wire that's hot and matched it to the power B+ to radio, took a self tap screw and ground to metal in dash, the Acc+ wire I found open fuse that lights only when key is on (used wire connector shaped like a Y' to insert into fuse panel) once I had power to radio I just kept testing mostly same color wires for speakers. Using radio dial to isolate each speaker
Hello. Thanks for this video, it is very good! I followed all steps but I'm not getting any sound on m speakers. I tested the wires using a 9v battery as you showed but nothing happens. The installation is on a western star truck model 4964 year 2006. Do you have any idea of what could be happening? There's no color coding on the wires and the Sony unit I'm installing is working fine! Thanks.
Sounds like you may have a factory amplifier in your car.. What is the year make a model? If you have a factory amp you will need to bypass it or still use it but sometimes you have to have a special interface to make it work or really understand some advanced electrical stuff to make it work..
Great video....I needed to watch this because I have a problem with parasitic drain when I connect with the harness plug. I believe it's the ground wire because it's a common problem with it. Can I just ground the wire to a metal part of the dash that's a good ground, indicated by the test light?
Looks like ill be breaking out the ol test light tomorrow. My 1996 Audi A4 Quattro has been nothing short of a headache and frustration. Spent countless hours out there trying to match wires to diagrams and schematics. Will keep it simple next go at it, sticking with your walkthrough(i like that you acknowledged the differences in wiring through the years/makes/models). My car has that stupid Bose factory amplifier that ive gotta work with. I have everything here i believe that i would need to get it done, its just being a pain.
From being in the retail side that sells the radios, I'd suggest NOT cutting the wiring harness on the new radio because if you get frustrated, give up, and want to get your money back on the new radio missing the original wiring harness, you won't be able to. I've changed out stock radios for third party radios like the Kenwood before and would suggest going to Crutchfield and getting the right wiring harness for your vehicle.
Thank god for the rare person like yourself teaching people real information, with real relevant knowledge of the subject. I realize as a beginner or when doing a DIY install for the first time you can make mistakes. I just wish those people would stop making how-to videos. ✌
I've installed a car stereo here and there back when I was a teen (80's), and this was by far one of the best instructions for doing it yourself - even down to the polarity of the speakers. Many do not know that part and will install great sounding speakers that sound terrible after installed from simply + added to - accidentally. I have a 1986 Nissan Maxima with factory stereo and speakers still installed. Nothing modern - even the tape deck. The left speakers go in and out (usually over bumps). After being on the plantation (work) all day, I don't always have the time or energy to do it myself, so I'd like anyone's advice on where to start 1st to save me time. Door / rear left speaker or straight to the stereo itself? From limited and old experience, my instinct says check the stereo - since the right side shows no sign of fade....only the left. Thanks in advance to any suggestions.
2 yrs later but I always start with fuses, easiest cheapest thing to check and can save you so much time and money in needless repairs. Then i'd check the deck and then the speakers and last most labour intensive the system wiring. Sometimes animals get in and chew stuff up. You'd be surprised the spaces mice and snakes get into.
@@nyizzle4533 Very true! Animals will destroy wiring. Fuses are good and speakers are new - it must be the stereo. I'd hate to remove any plastic molding at this point (35 year old car) since dry rot is a definite factor. Thanks for the reply & advice!
Can you pls also make a video installing stearingwheel controller, USB and rearview camera to a aftermarket stereo. And thanks for this video it helped a lot.
Hey, thanks man this was surprisingly helpful. I'll be replacing an oldschool 8 track player with a modern Bluetooth pioneer heaf unit. Eventually I'll get some better speakers but for now that should revolutionize the sound system as the radio chanel tuner only works in one Direction!
Hi, this was a brilliant video! I noticed that, during the testing, you turned the headlights on to check if the radio does anything out of the norm. I'm seeking your assistance. Whenever I turn my headlights on, my radio shuts off. How can I rectify this? Thanks you.
One of the greatest well explained video i did install mine but I think my old cable from the battery not well connected.. question if I run a new cable to the battery which post - or + ??
Do you happen to have a video on what to do if there is a factory amp installed? How to by pass it? Trying to install an aftermarket stereo on a 2003 ford explorer with match audio (speakers, sub & subwoofer), can't get the audio on the speakers... thank you
My install turned out to be easier than I thought since the old radio had a chart on it detailing what every wire was and all I had to do is match to the new radio wiring. I used heat shrink connectors which have a small metal collar in the center that is squeezed and results in a smaller bundle of wires rather than the white crimp cap type. From Amazon also the Kenwood radio caught it on Black Friday sale. Yea! Thanks to this video for heading me in the right direction.
Not a bad video... but to make life easier then this, so the price you will pay for crimper and wire crimps you could just buy a Year/Brand match SCOSCHE install Adapter for $5.99 at Walmart lol ... unless you have Crimping gear kicking around... I personally wouldn't do a Crimp install unless absolutely necessary... in saying that, this guy did do a great job, very clean looking... but... is he just going to leave that big hole?? Scosche also sells Dash Kits, cost about $15.99 at Walmart... it covers up the Hole and Voids that your aftermarket deck may not fill, like this guy... his deck does not fill the factory deck location, as seen in the video... food for thought.
Some adapters still require crimping. The whole point is that if we cared about looks in the first place, then we would have paid for it at the dealership. Most of automotive DIYers spend our money on functionality, not aesthetics.
If your car is ghetto to the point you dont have a factory harness and you are seeking out this video to find out how to rig this as cheap as possible instead of buying one, then you probably dont give a shit about the hole or saving time, because your poor ghetto ass just wants to hear some music as cheap as possible

I found the constant, ground, and all speaker, but I cant find the ignition. After cutting all the wires, I tried to turn my truck back on and it never turned over. Now the lights or nothing will turn back on. Any clue?

If you do not own a light tester like he uses to find the constant 12v, and accessory 12v then you can use a volt meter on continuity function and it will make a sound when it completes a circuit. Just connect the red (+) of the voltmeter to the wire, and the black (-) probe to a ground like he did in the video.
.... Thats nice and all.. But if you dont own a test light, chances are you dont own a multimeter. Test light $1. Multimeter $30. Unless you get a freebie from HF.
this should show first in the search for "how to wire car audio without a harness" ive been searchiing over a month for something detailed and now ive found your post. Thanks man definitely saved me a ton of trouble and time
FINALLY, a person who REALLY explains how
to install a radio!!! Got a cheap radio installed in my '85 Ram!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!
46 yr old chic followed these (easy to understand) instructions to connect my 1st car stereo & it sounds great! Ladies...if I can do it, so can you. Thank you for the video.
Nice work!
I couldn't ask for a more clear and precise description. Thank you. Now I'm off to install my radio!
Take notes, and pay attention, because this video is one of a kind.
i love you, i had a mechanic install a radio for me and he cut the harness off i was ready to give up and i thought that there was no hope THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Great video
Finally a proper car stereo installation video which also shows car wiring and were to connect.....awesome. Thanks.
Thanks!
I’m strait wiring a jvc radio into a 2000 Toyota Tundra and this is the most helpful thing I’ve found. Keep it up
Just curious how your install went. I'm direct wiring an aftermarket unit myself currently and a small part of me wishes that I had just spent the extra money on an adapter harness.
This job can be a challenge for someone like me who has little experience with electrical stuff.
@@scorpionwins6378 how’d it go lol
@@ThatNoFbody-ch9ky it went well. I looked up a wiring diagram on the internet for my vehicle. Downside is I lost my steering wheel controls but the rest is fine.
I HAVE NEVER IN 45 YEARS EVER HAD THIS EXPLAINED SO SIMPLE AND STAIT TO THE POINT !!!AND THE BATTERY TRICK . NEVER SEEN IT !!! YOU TAKE THE FEAR OUT OF THE RATS NEST OF WIRES YOU HAVE TO FIGURE OUT ... MAN AWSOME BRO.. THE BEST VIDEO OF ALL TIME...I found you because, well I have a bad back , haven't worked in 12 years , I have a 04 Xterra, I found a 10 in. kicker , yard sale $ 5 Bucks . I spent all day looking for a way to make a amp or hook it up splitting between the two back speakers, for enuff power to bass , my son is at the age where he loves sitting down at the river and playing favorite music .. I'm trying to hook up sub .. not working🙄, I have an old Pioneer, maybe it will have more power . I need to take factory stereo out..swap , sorry for rambling. I live alone out in country, an hour from closest store... and trying to figure it out , thank you..
Someone may have mentioned before but I'll repeat again. Why not disconnect the battery while cutting wires ?
When hard wiring you need the battery connected to find the power and each speaker
i have been looking for weeks for someone to give me the absolute break down and you are the only one to do it. You are awesome!!!
Thanks Brother!!!
This video is a little old, but an absolute lifesaver. My new to me truck has a cut wiring harness, and after watching this video and using a multimeter I was able to get everything working! Thank you!!!
Soldering and marine heat shrink then wrap makes for a much more reliable wire connection over crimps plus a nice smooth harness when finished. Marine heat shrink has a waterproof glue inside and you get a nice sealed joint every time. Apart from that a great presentation by this guy.
hands down best video i seen on connecting wires with no harness i give it a 10/10 so awsome i can do my second stereo conection ever and confident it will work with this mans instructions thank you sir..
The BEST video so far that I found on the web, concise and clear. Thank you for sharing and more power to your channel.

THANKS, GREAT VIDEO, CONCISE AND CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS. I have query, I see you wired up when ign was on and called that accessory position, Is it not so that there is an accessory position before ign on.. in order that you can listen to radio - cd whatever in a parking lot or in your garage without the ign having to be on,
Excellent video. The only thing I would add is that I would label the wires so that I wouldn't have to go through the steps to identify them in future.
Very well done. Thanks!
Thanks.
This video saved me $250 on a shop hardwiring my head unit. Thank you.
Thanks glad I could help!
Lmao what the fk? A radio adapter harness is like $10. Its LESS labor to just use the adapter harness and you don't have to mutilate your car.
rmblwgn naw my 2003 Chevy impala harness cost around $100, fuck that.

Man look at all the love you're getting. Good job brother.
Great video!!!! It took me days to find it but its the best ive seen so far... great job! You just made a new sub
THANK YOU.I bought nissan Almara1,5 2005 and no harness to be found anywhere.5 garages gave up.BUT YOUR VIDEO GOT ME DO MOST OF THE WORK.FOUND 4 speakers and 2 to go.THANK YOU AGAIN.

So right out the gate, tried a bunch of harness but they wouldn't work! So I find constant power but have none light up for Acc/accessory/ignition?
Am I going to have to hook up all power to constant power and just turn radio on and off itself?
I'm having the same issue
@@lilacne7560 I ended up hard wiring everything. Only thing I could figure is have to get maybe special harness from manufacturer because my car has that feature where radio stays on after you turn key for couple minutes unless you open the door. Some kind of timing feature
@@toddfranz1091 how did u hard wire it? I'm currently hardwiring mine,2007 pontiac grand prix no Amp,no moonsoon sound system
If you have a factory amp you will need to bypass it or still use it but sometimes you have to have a special interface to make it work or really understand some advanced electrical stuff to make it work..
same issue with my tundra has external amp with 3 wires red, green and blue going nuts with this radio great video thanks
Great video....I needed to watch this because I have a problem with parasitic drain when I connect with the harness plug. I believe it's the ground wire because it's a common problem with it. Can I just ground the wire to a metal part of the dash that's a good ground, indicated by the test light?
Excellent tutorial, made the installation so much easier!
Excellent video! Lots of helpful hints.
What if i have to that light up
The BEST tutorial on this subject on RUclips.
YOU HAVE EXPLAINED EVERYTHING VERY WELL, THAT IT WAS SO EASY FOR ME TO INSTALL MY NEW STEREO.THANKS .
You would not believe how long it took me to find this information THANK YOU. I WAS AT MY WITS END.
Well look what the cat drug in!
Long time, no see Brian. Good to see you again. 👍👍👍
+Rob's Wrenches Thanks!

By far the best attention to detail video I've come across for this subject. Thank you so much for taking the time to gift us with your knowledge. Ty.
Thank you, this is well explained

One of the greatest well explained video i did install mine but I think my old cable from the battery not well connected.. question if I run a new cable to the battery which post - or + ??
I watched this while hooking up my new player to my car.
Do you happen to have a video on what to do if there is a factory amp installed? How to by pass it? Trying to install an aftermarket stereo on a 2003 ford explorer with match audio (speakers, sub & subwoofer), can't get the audio on the speakers... thank you
thank you sir, this helped me more than you could ever imagine!

Awesome video! There’s a lot of useless content out there but I can see someone who’s looking for guidance really getting it here, good job.
Why the heck would you cut off the factory plug on that Honda pilot. that's just dumb. you should have found an old car that had it already gone...
Just for the video, it was only to teach people how to do it if it has been cut.
Obviously Phil wasn't paying enough attention to the video when he watched it, when you clearly said why you're doing it. Too bad he doesn't divert his divided attention elsewhere.
Anyways Brian,
I am having trouble with a 2006 Colorado. I actually have 2 connectors that go to my old radio, one is a 24 and the other a 12. Now the lights or nothing will turn back on. Any clue?
