Another nice instructional video Ian. The Mini is a joy to fly for me as well and a good trainer since it does have limitations in the areas of power and weight. I really think that mastering the Mini and pushing it’s limitations as you do is a great way to prepare a pilot for that one time their bigger and more capable drone gets into a instability situation that the pilot might never have experienced before had he not been spending time flying a Mini. Seems the gimbal adds a lot of drag and yes Sports mode and lower altitude over the trees can work. I had to re-adjust the RTN height too originally set (at the time to 70 meters) which was way to high, unbeknown to me. I might also add that when the mini first came out - my judgement was a little colored about what this drone could do (thoughts and actions) influenced by that other RUclipsr "Ready Set Drone" who put his Mini up against a leaf blower, so as you can imagine I thought mine could do anything ! But Thanks again for the Great Advice !

Good video as always. I posted my own video of the auto return saving my Mini. Waiting 11 seconds for auto return feels like a lifetime when over water. I use UAV Forecast to predict whether conditions are safe for flying as a rule. The wind at different altitudes and gust indicators come in handy.
Be aware that auto RTH drops the max speed down to normal mode, whereas Sports Mode has a higher max speed and can overcome wind better. So sometimes it's better to cancel the auto RTH and use sports mode...
I dont have a mini (m2ed + zoom) but the tips you give are really good and apply to all drones when flying in wind, some of which i didnt know (the flying backwards is an interesting one!)thanks Ian👍
Hi Ian, thanks for the great video as usual. I have a mini and also a spark that I’ve done the speed hack on. My question is, as the spark has had the speed hack done (basically the pitch angle is 60 deg instead of 35 deg ) and it reaches 50mph, can I safely fly in higher wind speeds than the recommended speeds? I’m dubious as it’s so small and light. Thanks a lot.
The Spark, even unmodified, is far better than the Mavic Mini in wind. I have lots of experience flying the Spark in all kinds of conditions and the Mini's poor wind handling came as a nasty shock to me. As long as you remain aware of the Spark's limited endurance (no longer acceptable for a new product?) the Spark is a better option in wind, bad weather and low light. But in good conditions the Mini almost justifies the Mavic label.
Martin Willett thanks Martin, that’s good to know. I’m still quite a newbie at the hobby and wanted the mini as my special occasion and holiday drone and managed to get a cheap spark fly more combo to keep in the car for whenever I get a chance to fly, and as we are having a bit of wind at the moment thought I would see what videos I could find on the subject, and to be fair it seems like the spark does alright!! But you are right about the limited endurance, 12 to 14 mins max ! Cheers

Nice video. I had long been wondering if you would share this extremely useful trick after we discussed it in the comment section of one of your previous videos.
Winter is coming... flying backwards in very cold conditions will maintain the operating temperature of the Mini, but in hot weather will cause it to overheat. DJI eliminated the need for a cooling fan by directing airflow in forward flight over the gimbal and out through the specially shaped "gills" under the fuselage. In hover, the high pressure under the drone reverses that airflow to maintain cooling. Damned clever, these Orientals.
Very good helpful information Ian, hopefully never having to use it though or in the future 🤞another good feature is the “ find my drone” app, not sure if you have done a video on how to find my drone but would be something that you could maybe show in a video in future to help us understand the process?of finding it! I’m new with the mini. But I’m in Vegas. Either way still new but that was crazy. I mean this little drone is much more then it appears to be. I’m actually shocked and I’ve seen the mini 2 in flight so I’m just kinda at a loss with this hobby I’ve been researching five plus years.
I have the Mavic Pro 2 and Mini. I let my son have his first go with the Mini and when he came in to land, I said press the left stick down and hold it, but he pressed the return to home button and it climbed and hit trees having the first crash with any drone.
