      On rare occasions I've taken on a strong wind, it is less stressful on the machine to take a sailing approach, i.e. don't go directly into the headwind. Zig Zag a little to reduce the apparent wind speed you are up against.

    Buying the DJI Mavic Air 2s was a great decision for me. Camera, features and coping with wind - all fantastic. It is such a pleasure to fly. I have also just purchased the Mini 3 pro which I have yet to fly. I had the Mini 2 which I gave to my niece's husband. It did surprisingly well in wind. But, I took your advice when it stopped moving against the wind and I lowered my altitude and got back in 'sports mode'. The wind had shifted. I initially launched into the wind, but a kilometer out, the wind shifted. Yes, I was freaked out, but, I remembered your advice and got the Mini 2 back to the launch point. Thanks!

    This is interesting. The larger drones might have more power but they are also larger in size and thus the wind acts against them more. The Air 2 seems to be a great balance of size and power which is why it did best. Of course, in conditions where you SHOULD fly your drone, the bigger drones do have significant benefits.

    Nice wind test. I have the Evo 2 Pro also and last week ran into some heavy winds here in Chicago. Had the same issue you were experiencing but I was in normal mode not ludicrous. I figured the obstacle avoidance was limiting the angle the drone could fly at, so I switched it off (just touch the green OA symbol in the upper right hand corner of the screen) until it turned red. Evo 2 then easily handled going into the wind at its top speed in that mode - 22 mph. Did not try it in ludicrous, but my guess is it would probably work the same. Try switching off the OA when going into the wind and see what happens. I see the MP2 switches off the OA in Sport mode, probably the same issue - OA was preventing a steeper angle.

    Nice video, Ian. However, in my opinion, I think a better test to include for any wind rating test of all the drones would be "how do they hold position and stability in such strong winds?" Reason that is relevant is that is where you are going to be filming and/or taking photos. I have an Autel Evo 2 Pro, and DJI Mini2 + Mavic Air 2: while all fly for speed just as you show here in this video, for actual video or still photography, the E2P provides a rock steady platform even in high winds, and the results show in the videos I have recorded with it along the coast here in Southern California, with some very high, gusty winds on the bluffs at the beach. I also never had any doubts about getting it back to the launch point, something I have had with my Mini 2 for the obvious reasons you demonstrated here: Your point about returning with the wind is Spot On critical at those times! Also - The E2P RTH function in the wind is still more accurate than either of my DJI birds.
    Lastly - I recommend turning off the Radar Map in the Autel Explorer and DJI Fly apps: gets rid of the annoying beeping while keeping the OA benefits.
    Keep the excellent vids coming - I like the views from around the UK!

      Hi there. Good points. I've found all the models excellent for producing super-smooth video when stationary; I guess maybe a better test is a 1 second still picture using a dark ND filter to extend the exposure time. That would show how well the drone is holding it's position.... But ultimately, this was a good bit of fun, just to make sure none of them blew away! :)

      @@boomboom9479 my initial mini 2 had awesome videos, but the pictures weren't really impressive. I found them really soft. However I sent it to DJI for repairs and they ended up sending me a brand new one instead. Totally different serial number. That ones pictures are noticeably better, not sure why. In the meantime, I had bought the Air 2S. I don't see huge improvements over picture and video quality, but they are better for my taste. But if I would've had that replacement mini 2 before purchasing the Air 2S, I probably would've stuck with that second mini 2. That said, I almost exclusively use my Air 2S because it handles wind better and obstacle avoidance too. If these 2 things are really important, go for the Air 2S, but if not, the mini 2 is awesome still for what it does at less than half the price.

      i diont think so. with al things concidered (exact same wind speed and direction, agl, and fresh batteries), m2 platform is stronger and faster. unlocked it can fly over 90km/h (this is real wind m2 wind resistance to hold position, imo)

    Great test. I think I can count on one hand the times I have had trouble with the wind flying drones, maybe because I respect bad weather in the first place and like sunny days to shoot video at. However, the DJi FPV in manual or sport does not care about wind at all in my experience, so strong moters, it just goes like a rocket ship.

    I honestly thought the Mavic 2 was going to take the win. Considering everything I am glad I chose the right drone. I can't believe the Air 2s beat out the Mavic 2 Pro. I did think the Auto was going to do better than it did. If it was the size of the Mini 2. I think the Mini 2 would have beaten Autel.
    I currently own and started with the Mini 2 as my 1st drone. I later into fall added the Air 2s and then finally the Avata!
    I sure hope to see more future tests for performance like this on other drones. Maybe, Mini 3 Pro, Avata, DJI FPV and whatever else you can get ahold of. You have a great testing area there. What a great place to do wind tests!

    I suppose in one sense it does depend on what is meant by "handle" strong winds. To my mind that means, for drones at least, that they can fly in winds up to the stated speeds, not that they are unaffected by those winds.
    With the exception of the Mini 2 they all handled the winds admirably, but all were affected to one extent or another.
    Personally, I would not expect any of those drones to fly "normally" in winds approaching their maximum ratings. But that's my interpretation.
    Nice video, many thanks, again, for making and posting these videos.

    I've done the high wind test with my drone also. Although I inadvertently flew it with the wind and had to fight coming back. The problem was the wind was greater than 45 miles an hour and the drone was barely making headway and the battery was running down quickly. I ended up having to tack like a sailboat against the wind to get it close enough to home where I could get underneath the buildings and trees and landed safely..
    As far as the speed goes I think for safety reasons the EVO 2 are governed at a set speed even if you had a 60 mph return wind it would probably keep it under it's control speed. At least that's what I found when I was flying with the wind that it's top speed still didn't exceed the speed limit of the drone. One thing's for sure though when the battery says it's low it's time to get it landed. Because if you don't it'll fly itself to death trying to get back to the takeoff point and just stop and hover till the batteries run down If it don't have a clear landing point.
    I found that out one day when returning back to the take-off point in a parking lot that it decided it was going to land and wouldn't allow me to control it over three more feet so it would land in the parking lot instead of on top of a car. It just sat there and hovered and fought my controls. I ended up having to grab it out of the air and hitting the kill switch lol

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  3 года назад

      Yes, the speed is always limited not to exceed the spec'd max speed for the mode you've chosen, even flying with a very strong wind. And don't push the battery :)

    Good vid, answered some of my questions. I’ve been a Mavic Pro flyer for years and just recently got into the DJI FPV drone. While I was watch someone’s video I noticed when he hand landed his done, instead of using the controller to shut it down he just tilted his wrist 90 degrees and it stopped the motors. Been doing like that it ever since. Wish I would have known this years ago.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  3 года назад +1

      I don't like flipping it down as it's stress on the props and motors.... I keep the left stick down to stop the props, but that's my take.... :)
