As much as I love Lor'thermar I think Kael'thas could've been a great Leader for the Blood Elves. But then everything changed when the Burning Crusade attacked!
I don't think they thought WoW would carry out for so long. They just threw in bosses we've seen in WC3 and whatever, without giving them much thought. Then, WoW became a thing to last and they realized they have to expand the story, not only resume to killing the characters that appeared in WC3...
Burning Crusade remains to be my least favorite expansion for this reason. It was their first I get it and people have good memories of it. At the very least they didn't kill off Maiev and Rexxar and only killed Arthas later and did it properly.
They still kinda screw it up when you meet Kael in Tempest Keep. His dialogue in that raid was short of him just growing a mustache and twirling it, typical WoW in-game representations. I really wish they emphasize that on Magister Terrance, it was this giant fel rock in his body causing him to do bad things and act out of character. When you fight him, you can feel it a bit in his dialogue, like when he casts gravity lapse, his voice falters as if he was trying to fight back from doing so. I really wish they could redeem his character. Not bring him back to life, but at least do some in-game storyline that doesn't just treat him as a bad-guy-flavor-of-the-month for people to spit at. It really is such a distasteful thing what they did to Kael, a story of a prince who would try to redeem himself and his people, who ventured to hell and back to save them, only for hell to shackle him and damn him as payment, but ultimately gave his people the tools to make them prosper even if he could not live see them do so.
if they could somehow redeem illidan and make him a tragic hero ala legion expac, then they could totally do the same with kael! unfortunately elves get shit on by the loud minority of WoW players who just wana see beefy ass orcs humans and trolls. Let the elves rule the next expac!
I hate wow because you don't feel the passion for the lore like in warcraft 3... i mean they just put a dialogue of 2 seconds here, another there and there is it, you have a shitty raid without atmosphere or personality.
From what I saw both he and Garrosh might be in one area, Lady Vashj and Alexander Mograine in another, Kel'Thuzad is somewhere, and hushed rumors of the best character ever created in Warcraft will return
Kael’thas was my favorite over hero in W3, he was the reason why my main race in wow is blood elf, and when you menched that kael in the end in away did save his people, that really touch me deep man, thanks
I personally liked the idea Kael/Jaina. With the Windrunner sisters frolicking about with human men, it would have been nice to have had a human female/male elf relationship.
Loved how this concisely explained a major lore puzzle about a major Warcraft character. The pictures are really cute too - they remind me of Overly Sarcastic Productions' mythology videos. I really hope we'll be able to rescue Kael'thas in Shadowlands. I really feel bad for him. Not enough to stop farming him for Alar, but still kind of bad. And I totally ship him with Lady Vashj!
Lady Vashj is the only person who deserves him tbh. She was the only one who really showed him any sympathy and wanted to help him for nothing in exchange. I mean, she probably totally wanted to get him on her side, but it also really looked like she saw his and his people's suffering and knew that her way they could at least find a fix.
Kael'thas is a fking hero. He sacrificed everything for his people. He sold his fame and reputation to Legion for fel magic in order to fulfill his people's magic addiction. Yet, his people defined Kael'thas as a traitor when they found out he joined the Legion and killed him more than a thousand times for Ashes of Al'ar. Just like Uther and Jaina turned their backs on Arthas in front of Stratholme, so apathetic.
Kael'thas is a hero, I love him, and I will fight over this any day. I wish I could live in the alternate timeline where they wrote him on point throughout WoW. Could you imagine him being with us when we fought the Scourge in WotLK? *sigh* 😔
Kaelthas is the whole reason why I always loved blood elves :) I am so sad that he got played like that and turned t his way. I really hope some day blizzard will redeem his name.
Just a question. Would you mind to make a short Villains Corner about the Headless Horseman aka Sir Thomas on Hallows End? It is more of a tragic story, but still worth mentioning in my opinion.
And now, the same shit's happening with Sylvanas. Suddenly, BOOM. She's a villain now. And not just any villain. A villain who became an enemy of light, hope and everything and an ally of death. Hopefully this time, it wouldn't take 10 years for us to realize why she did what she did.
I feel bad for the Sylvanas fans. We Kael'thas fans, of which are not many left as the The Burning Crusade writing staff has decimated most, have been suffering for years. And both of our suffering is not over. Sylvanas fans are going to have to watch her become a simp for another evil death overlord guy and Kael fans will have to watch him be treated like a dog for stuff the writers shouldn't have forced him into in the first place.
I think I remember someone on the forums came up with a theory he was kinda like the boss in metal gear snake eater. That’s how I wish it was more like... Kael knew he’d have to sacrifice himself and the respect his people had for him to save them.
KingJoJustJoking not really. He’s a fallen Hero, a major staple of Blizzard. It is a trope that their the master of and do more than anyone. Just look at the three heroes from Diablo one becoming three villains in Diablo 2, as well as King Leoric, Malthael and his Reapers, and even Imperius to some degree. In Starcraft there’s Kerrigan, and perhaps Tycus. And in Warcraft there’s Arthas, Kel’Thuzad, Illidan, Deathwing, Malycos, Sylvanas, even Sargarues, Archimond and Kil’Jaden, and Kalthaes. And by the way things are going Jania and others might soon be among them. Yes, some of the Fallen Heroes redeem themselves, but most don’t and remain victims of corruption, bad decisions, and/or things outside their control.
@@Immagonko The more accurate explanation is that the writers wrote Kael's fall to evil fairly competently, but when implementing it in WoW they half-assed it so laughably lazily that the recent book was needed just to explain what was supposed to have happened.

What they did to his character in TBC was really unnecessary. I don't care about the book where they -explained- justified their decision to make him a villain. Sure you can make it make sense in a way if you really try to, but it doesn't mean it's the best writing decision for a previously really compelling character. In W3 it's pretty clearly established that he's simply trying to save his people as best he can, and he's really anything but prideful. He puts up with the humans' racism even though he's clearly bothered, he helps out the Night Elves and is nothing but courteous, he basically helps saving Tyrande's life because he unintentionally outs Maiev as a dirty liar. The "betrayals" that Garithos accuses him of are not betrayals, he just takes free boats from the only person who sympathises with his people's suffering, and then he flees from certain death by execution from a fucking racist piece of garbage that he showed subservience to. I think much higher of Lady Vashj than any of the shit humans in this campaign, even though now we are supposed to think that Nagas are all evil. The writers go out of their way to portray Kael as the guy who thinks about his people's survival first and foremost, and he's desperate enough to even kneel before Illidan in exchange for help, and he must be happy to help destroy the Lich King. (This last part makes me think about how he could have been a major character who has a personal reason to defeat Arthas in WotLK, just like Jaina and Sylvanas were, and it breaks my heart even more.) Apparently they basically confirmed they wrote certain characters in a way that they could make raid bosses out of them. I just don't understand why they felt like it was a better idea to turn Kael into a villain rather than giving us the most iconic Blood Elf as the actual leader. Did fucking Garithos write this part of the TBC story or what? I personally really dislike the fact that Kael betrayed Illidan, but it's not necessarily impossible. They did try to explain it, but it really felt like a weak excuse after the fact, just so that most fans would shut up and accept. It's still a bad writing direction for the original character, but we know that the WoW team didn't get most of W3's story, like they believed the Scourge and the Forsaken to be the same faction, oof. What they are doing now is only insult to injury. As a fan I feel spat on. The way Kael behaves in what I've seen so far from him in SL is not only inaccurate but offensive against what the true character was. In what scene of TFT was Kael'thas ever "arrogant"? Considering Blood Elves are often portrayed as very prideful he actually comes across as one of the most humble and sensible Elves I've ever seen. I also don't like the fact that in later appearances he often keeps insisting on being the Sun King and some crap, when in actuality he voluntarily gave up the crown and out of an act of mourning proclaimed that his father was the last King of the High Elves, and that he would stay Prince. Kael's actions were difficult and not holy, but he is a damn HERO. The Kael'thas I know from TFT would probably agree to die if it was to save his people. Even with the stupid writing he suffered from in TBC, this is what happened, and the Blood Elves only survived and now thrive thanks to him! And yet they call him a traitor and pay him no respect! What a traitorous bunch they all are! Anyone who judges Kael'thas is probably a lvl 60 Hypocrite. What they are doing now is a disgrace, I never thought their TBC writing choices ever be undercut, but it looks like they made a fool out of me for thinking that his appearance in SL could make up for TBC. They can never atone for THEIR sins against Kael'thas. Justice for Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider!

I think the "tyrande falling from the bridge" part is no longer canon in the new book.
lovely video as allways and those drawings are so cute
can't wait until we see Kael'thas in Shadowlands since Blizzard officially announced his return in the zone of Revendreth
