    That repot of your Encyclia is a very good hint for me to repot my beast after it flower. I think it has 3 or 4 spikes at the moment. Jezz, it is a beast. Happy growing.

    Let's look at Encyclia hanburyi : I know the orchidspecies website uses the term "terrestrial" in the description of this species, and many websites have just copied their description. But I believe that to be misleading. Note that even the orchidspecies website additionally describes the plant as growing on trees and rocks. The entire genus are epiphytes. However, as is not uncommon with epiphytes, a storm or other disturbance can knock them to the ground. Many of the Laeliinae are very adaptable plants and can adjust to being knocked down. Furthermore, some of the Laeliinae may germinate on a low branch of a woody shrub and then just grow over the edge (there are no pots in nature!) and onto rocks or the debris on the ground. Thus one can walk in nature (well, used to anyone before orchids were mostly poached) and find said plants on the ground, but they didn't start off as true terrestrial orchids. The brown root tips on your plant may very well be due to humidity being too low during their growth period, but I still wouldn't treat the plant as a terrestrial, given your climate is often cool, wet, and cloudy.

    I am sure they are happy in their new homes and will promtly bloom for you. I have Encyclia randii alba but it is just a division I bought last october. It has 3 psb and a new growth but just two leaves which however are very long. Yours has very beautiful roots ❤️

      I love encyclia with their sprays of many flowers but mostly they are hard to find and different enough in cultivation from cattleya (in my climate anyway). Funny you should say about the scale. I've had some scale on the randii but the others have been free. Touch wood! (You know how it goes. We must never say we are problem free because that is just an invitation for oodles of problems the very next day). I hope my hanburyi will do well now because he is a big brute to feed for this long and get no flowers! Thanks for watching, Todd.

    Those 4 back bulbs i guess knew they didn't want to get cut off so they just gave in to you. Two beautiful orchids and I know their blooms will be just as lovely. Too bad I live over the pond then maybe I would receive a bulb from you. Love your videos.

    Encyclias are one my favorites, especially fragrant ones! Those fat pseudobulbs are so cute too 😊. I did not know that there were terrestrial encyclias. I grow mine in lava rock (pretty good sized chunks) in clay pots, as they seem to like a lot of air flow around the roots. I only have 4 types, but would like to collect more.

    Awesome video I must say! I learned a lot from it. Ty for sharing this 💚 My question is how to know what size pot to do to next? My Encyclia Rioclarence and Cattleya Anna Saeki needs repotting after 3 yrs growth. They're both in 4" pots. Ty 💚

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  4 года назад +1

      I would say to allow 1-2" of space in front of the new growths. You don't need space at the back of the plant. If in doubt, err on the smaller side!

    I live in a warm climate, Florida. The leaves and bulbs of my encyclia have turn dark, like a burgundy color. She is under a tree in a wood básquet . Have you ever had this problem? Too much sun maybe?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  2 года назад

      It sounds like your encyclia is getting too much light. Try moving it to a place of slightly more shade. Not a bad problem to have at all!

    Hi there! Your video is great and so useful. I have an Encyclia lancifolia which for some reason I cannot rebloom. I live in Scotland, so I assume our climate should be similar because you're in Ireland so I believe your experience could help me. :) My Encyclia has many new bulbs and looks like a very healthy plant but when the sheath develops for a flower spike, they always start turning yellow and eventually dry off, without any spikes coming up. :( I saw you added shredded shells to the top of the barks for source of calcium. Do you think it could be that my encyclia does not have enough calcium (as I have mine only in bark) to initiate flowering? Your advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Ruby :)

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 года назад +1

      Hi there and thank you for your message. I am sorry to hear about your encyclia. I don't grow this one myself. Prematurely yellowing sheaths is generally a sign of either lack of maturity of the plant or insufficient humidity. I don't see it as a result of calcium deficiency. Insufficient light should also be considered as a factor. If your humidity is low, try a humidity tray. Also try moving the plant to a place of better light, especially in winter. In winter in Ireland or Scotland you would be hard put to give a cattleya alliance plant too much light. Hope this helps. Rachel

      @@GardeningatDouentza Thank you so much for your response. :) I'm a bit disappointed about my Encyclia because I thought it would be easy to rebloom it but now it's been nearly 2 years. But I won't give up on it. :P Hopefully next year I'll see some positive change. :) Thank you for your suggestions. :)

    Must be spring, repotting has begun. I started a few weeks ago. I'm debating if I should repot my Chysis limminghei or wait. It has never flowered for me but grew the biggest growths yet last year and has seven starting. The genus is supposed to resent being repotted and I'd hate to risk it not blooming again. Decisions, decisions.
    Also, do your chicken complain that you are stealing their oyster grit for your orchids?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  4 года назад

      Yes, decisions, decisions.
      Our chickens are no more so they cannot complain about my use of their oyster grit. They roamed free in the garden and one day they disappeared. I like to think they found a better place rather than the fox!

  • @patriciathibeault5267

    What are oyster grits

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  3 года назад

      Oyster grit is oyster shell, sold as a chicken feed. It is high in calcium.
