  • Today we are talking about the famous coconut Orchid and how to keep it healthy and blooming in our homes!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
Maxillaria tenuifolia is one of the most popular Orchids in cultivation, due to its wonderful coconut scent. There are a few of us who don;t really detect coconuts, but rather peach, pineapple, or a tropical blend of fruits! I's very yummy and summery nonetheless 😁
    More on its habitat www.orchidspecies.com/maxillar...
Luckily this Orchid loves home conditions and also looks good as a houseplant! It still needs an airy potting mix, but don't let it get dry for too long!

Yes, I’m interested in a repotting video. I’v been struggling with mine for so long. I was wondering about the light and water requirements. Apparently I need to move it closer to a higher light situation. I also have to keep it out of reach of my cats, which love to chew on the leaves (just like my spider plants).

I grow mine outdoors year round in coastal southern California and they show no signs of stress with our average lows of 9 c and highs around 16 in the winter. It can tolerate the rare days it gets down to 5 c in winter and summers as warm as 35 and up.

This is a quote from the American Orchid Society page: The paramount quality of the media is that it does not stay consistently wet so sphagnum may be the least suitable choice. I realize that orchid needs probably vary according to where you live, but it’s amazing how often I encounter polar opposite advice about the same varieties.

I was gifted one of these beautiful orchids earlier this year and I just love it! Mine is mounted on a board with the roots wrapped in moss. It put out a ton a new aerial roots in the spring, but as we got in to summer I noticed that the roots seemed to dry up. I live in Houston, TX, and it's 35-37 degrees C most days in the summer. Do I need to re-mount this plant and wrap the new roots up each year?

The amount of water needed by Max.ten. is very dependent on the ambient temperature and the amount of light. I live in a temperate area and my neighbor has many Max t. outside (min temp 7 C, 45 F in winter) on mount. The orchid does fine but must dry before watering. In fact, keeping them wet kills them. So, keeping this plant wet is specific to this specific growing condition.

Hello, I tried to contact you via Facebook. Is that a possibility? I have some questions about flower buds that are not getting fully grown over a long period of time. In general the plant is developing great against all expectations. Does this tell you something? BTW, awesome videos, great effort you've put into this!!

Hi, I decided to divide it and put it in some giveaways, as parts of the main plant dried and spoiled the whole look. Plus it didn't smell like coconuts so I wanted one from a different source, just to confirm the fragrance ☺️
