This is one of my reasons I watch your videos! I would have never tackled this on my own, I love orchid plants but they have been hard for me to grow & thank you for sharing and teaching me !
Thank you! There are several orchids that would probably perform well for you. They just aren't the types we see at nurseries because they aren't as flashy and mass produced.
😂🤣 I keep getting asked if I'll start doing orchid videos again. Figured trying to fuse them with houseplants would less polarizing and a good way to get back into it.
Thank you very much for the information. Mine did not bloom but I did't know about the rest it needs so I can try that now. I sure hope you are doing well. I like to watch your vidios while I am doing my Saturday chores and watering my orchids and any time I get a chance. You are so entertaining no matter what you are talking about. You make me laugh out loud alot.
Thank you so much! Usually if they aren't blooming, that can be fixed by increasing their light and maybe upping the fertilizer as well around February into March.
A new friend of mine gifted me a clipping of this little fun orchid. I have several orchids and vandas and like the Sharry Baby Oncidium I am attracted to easy care and enjoyment of all things green. Just placed it in aa fully ventilated plastic pot with chips, charcoal and coconut husk. I'll be interested to see how I make out. Thank you for the nicely narrated video.
Very nice to wake up and gain some knowledge of orchids. I am growing orchids for about 5 years so I would like to one to collections. Thanks for the info.
Hi Jeff! I really enjoyed this video about the Coconut Orchid and that it's one of the easier orchids to grow. I may have to try and find one. I love the leaves on it! I'm glad you will work in some videos about easy care orchids. I've only had Phals, but would like to try others. Thank you so much for sharing!
I bought my first Maxillaria tenuifolia 'Haupia' last week at an orchid show and it's in moss, but I live in Connecticut where most of my orchids are in a bark mix. I was told by the vendor that they can take up to 48 months to rebloom. I've also heard that high level light is needed. Slipper ordhids and cattleyas are supposed to be easy.
I may have to get one of these!!! I keep trying to grow orchids and failing at it. But I really believe it is because I didn't have my grow lights. And I bought orchids that had bad roots and where in the wrong type or media. I am going to keep trying with healthy orchids. I have managed to keep a ground orchid alive for over a year!!! Hopefully by this time next yeat I can say that about other varities!! I am going to have to research this orchid and see if they are easy to find. Thanks for the video!!! Look forward to seeing more easy to care for orchids!!!
I’m definitely going to purchase this orchid and give it a try. I really like the green foliage. I would really enjoy watching more easy to care for orchids. Thank you for this great video as usual!
💜 Thanks for the info, I learn something new every Tropical Plant Party video! The orchids are beautiful. I will add them to my meditation garden scape 😊
Hey Jeff Great to hear some info on orchids. My experience with these types of plants has been very consistent, I sadly kill them each and every time. Ive got a strong feeling I overwater. I also need some proper orchid bark rather than using the store stuff. You've got the skills my friend😃👍
Watering is a hard thing to get down sometimes because of all the variables. Miss Orchid Girl here on youtube just released a video on watering orchids. I haven't watched it, but she is a great reference for any and everything orchid related.
For me phalaenopsis grow really well. I just repot them with loose sphagnum in terra cotta and water them only when the leaves start to wrinkle. If they are growing in compacted sphagnum, I just place them in a larger terra cotta pot and after the first watering they will adjust to it. Also always bottom water them, and they have been the most carefree plants I have (even less demanding than my cacti). I've recently been growing jewel orchids, and those are also wonderful with the gold, silver, platinum and rose gold markings on their velvety leaves. With those I just treat them like any normal medium light houseplant; keeping the soil relatively moist, and that's all. Now I'm getting the itch to try a maxillaria and cymbidium!
Awesome :) Fun to see you do an orchid care video. I have a few and like to try different kinds. I have two brassovola crosses and FINALLY one of them is sending out a spike *fingers crossed, I just spotted it today. It took forever to get to this point since I bought it bare-root a few years ago, and initially I didn't pot it up right, looking back. Anyway, thanks for the video! Have a great night ;D
Thank you! I hope you're having a great night also! Brassovola are some of my favorites. Miss orchid girl released a video today and showed a cross that im obsessing over! Brassocattleya Saint andre... I want it!
@@TropicalPlantParty Yes, I saw her video and that cross is amazing! Actually it was after that video that I checked mine and saw a bud! yay. Mine is a Brassocattleya Fuchs Star ⭐️ (weird name, i know)
Hi Jeff, we great over in 🇬🇧 thanks for such a informative video, my orchids are all indoors as I don’t want to put them outside as worry about spiders hitching a ride inside! Major issue with spiders! I also have mine all in bark, orchid potting mixture. I feed mine during the summer and then again in the spring. No special attention. My Christmas cactus are just about to bloom and sit in full sun all year round,. Take care and stay safe. 😁🇬🇧🐾💕🌈🙏🏻
Smart! Spiders do seem to love the orchids dont they? I spray mine down with a solution of water and peppermint oil a week before moving them inside and I do it again right before moving them.
Tropical Plant Party that’s a great idea, I must get some peppermint oil and do this, sounds good. I don’t do any weeding in the fall until, those little ugly yellow spiders with all the webs have gone. Good tip Jeff, thanks.
Sigh... I miss my orchids. I guess I need to start looking for some again! haha IME the Phals are good cheap beginner orchids IF they are potted and watered properly, but Dendrobium are pretty easy too.
Hi Jeff! Hope you’ve healed well. I have a strange request if possible. Do you have a variegated alocasia? If so could you spare some offsets? I’d love to get some.
I think big box store phals are much harder to grow then a lot of other more exotic orchids. I actually do far better with cattleyas, catasetums and vandas then phals most of the time and those are the "fussy" ones you mentioned. They really aren't. They require more knowledge (catasetums) or more effort (vandas) but it's fairly straightforward. The problem with the big box orchids is that they are always potted in a way that is usually guaranteed to fail in most climates and there's no acknowledgement by most care guides that your care is going to look incredibly different if you are growing in the Midwest versus somewhere like Florida. Plus you do have to kill plants to learn. One of the speakers at my local orchid society always used to tell us you're still a "beginner" orchid grower until you've killed at least 100 orchids. I've definitely learned more from the failures I've had compared to the successes.
I noticed some scale on my coconut orchid and one of my phaphs and wiped off what I could with cotton balls and isopropyl alcohol. Can't get it all as It's impossible to get in the crevices at the base and where the leaves are emerging ... I have also sprayed with Bonide '8 insect killer' spray. How can i be sure to get it all as I don't want it to spread to the rest of the guys 😕 Do you use any systemics? Scale is a pain😡
I purchased an orchid from a big box place recently. When i got it home, i went to repot and notice BUGS IN THE POTTING MIX. As i was loading up the flame thrower, as one dose in this situation, I realized i dont think ive ever heard of a pest problem or control for orchids. These where the black moss fly things - God I hate Those Things. So, Are there pest orchids are prone to, and is it safe to use a pesticide on them? (Flame Thrower Worked Well By The Way)
Just like all houseplants, the level of pest will vary between different types. I've had my share of issues with mealy bugs and they've never shown interest in my maxillaria, which says a lot because I've had it for years.
Weird! I don't remember seeing anything. Sometimes youtube is fucky like that. I checked the spam folder and it's not in there. I'll check the held for review folder.
Ooo I agree we need more houseplant people to get more into orchids!!
Yes we do!

I have this orchid and love it. I have it close to the Sharry Baby Oncidium that smells like chocolate. So I get a coconut with chocolate scent.
Love love love the Sherry baby! Another easy and rewarding orchid!

I love jewel orchids! You're absolutely right too, I grow them basically identically to how I would tradescantia and a lot of other houseplants.
I love it.... My pick is dendrobium kingianum.
Excellent choice!
Great video! I can’t wait for mine to bloom!

Thank you!
I prefer bark aswell it drains/dries better in my room ❤.
Same for me! Would rather water more often and have to rehydrate a plant than save it from rotting.
And ppl grow it water culture which has done amazing for me
I think I might try One of those if I can find one, thanks Jeff 💚🙃
Awesome video as always! 😁👍🌴
Thank you!
Beautiful. I’ve never seen one for sale in my area. 💞
I usually see them on etsy and ebay. Not one that gets much attention from nurseries unfortunately.
The botanical gardens has orchids they're beautiful.
Do they do an orchid show? Ours puts on a massive orchid show that goes on for several weeks each winter.
@@TropicalPlantParty I dont think so . I have a membership and dont recall one last 3 or 4 yrs
Ooo, orchid October! 🌴❤🎃
That has a nice ring to it!

You won't regret it, they are fun and rewarding😊
My favorite is Vandal cuz it Bloom continuously the only thing is that it loves water and sunlight
They are wonderful! Probably my favorites also.
Hi Jeff! Hope you’ve healed well. I have a strange request if possible. Do you have a variegated alocasia? If so could you spare some offsets? I’d love to get some.

Well said!
Oncidium Aka Baby Raspberry Chocolate, got 2 spikes on mine. One parent is Sharry Baby so Im expecting good fragrance from it.
I bet that will smell so lovely if Sharry baby is one of the parents!

Yaaaasss!!

How will they do in Central Texas?
In filtered light they should be good outside and care would be the same when they need to be indoors.
Add one to my collection lol
You won't regret it!
Yours is so full and bushy. Mine hardly seems to grow.
Ever used the seaweed extracts in your water? I've noticed that helps them take off quite a bit.

Prefer vandas than they coconut orchid. Vanda is so much easier
