  • Hi Everyone, it's Annabel, welcome back to my channel!
    Today we are repotting my Encyclia cordigera, plus a couple of Cattleyas I have had from seedling size. This is quite a chatty repot, I'll also talk about how I care for the Encyclia cordigera in my environment and specific traits I have found with this orchid. Plus some plans for converting my moss orchids into Synthic mixes.
    (For more info see Synthic video: • Let's Try Synthic! Pot... )
    I believe the Encyclia cordigera thrives when plenty of moisture is provided, and mine has done amazingly in self-watering with sphagnum. I wanted to provide an inorganic alternative, having now discovered synthic, which allows me to provide more moisture than self-watering with LECA would. In the past, semi-hydro with LECA proved too dry, but now we have better inorganic alternative mixes :-) It also likes plenty of bright light!
    I hope you enjoy this video!

    Very interesting how you grow your cordigera. Mine is in lava rock and does not like to be wet. I do live in a colder climate with long harsh winters, so that is probably why. Mine blooms in spring.

    Roger Frampton also has a plant of the Mariechen cross. I posted on his channel that the other parent is almost certainly misspelled. I suspect it is C. xduveenii (a natural hybrid of C. harrisoniana) given the bifoliate nature of the seedlings. Since the reclassification of several genera in the Laeliinae there is another C. duveenii, which was formerly Laelia duveenii. If the first (the natural hybrid) is remade by humans then one can write with the capital letter, C. Duveenii, but I would put the "x" in front because otherwise it will be confused with the former rupicolous Laelia.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      Oh wow, I was totally unaware of this. Orchid garden does usually put the x on the start of the tags but after a quick Google I can't imagine it's a Laelia cross. Also getting some anthocyanin speckling on the leaves, so I suspect we shall have spotted flowers! Having just gone back and checked orchid garden they now seem to have adjusted the name and have images of the cross flowers- it seems you are right that they just misspelled this tag...? Athough I bought this seedling a while ago they often keep the same listings for a long time, while they sell stock or get new batches of seedlings in I guess. Here is the link to their current listing orchidgarden.co.uk/shop/hybrid-orchids/orchid-cattleya-labiata-x-laelia-tenebrosa-nfs-3468-3799-3800-3802-3803-3804-3805.html 😄 I'm excited that there are now images of the flowers, I'll be honest and say at the time I wanted to try a few new cattleyas and the seed vs were super cheap (also super tiny 😂) so I just added a few without investigating too much. Now I go through parentage more to check They don't have special requirements, but back then I was less thorough! Thanks for the info!

    Recently purchased the Epicyclia Serena O'Neill which has already had three leaves fall off the older pseudobulbs.
    I'm planning on repotting soon, but I only have small grade bark leftover from a paph repot, coconut husk/chunks, perlite, and charcoal.
    Does this Encyclia go dormant during the winter?

  • @marygorchidsmore2058
    @marygorchidsmore2058 4 года назад +1

    Nicely re-potted. In case of those cattleyas, do you fill in the reservoir after repotting straight away or let it dry first and then fill it with water?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      Self watering or semi hydro aims for always having the reservoir with water in 😄 so they get watered straight away- they're already adapted to SH in any case so there's no real transition. Constant supply of water and nutrients is the aim 😄

    Hi Ana, thank you for this informative video. I just bought a very nice E. Cordigera ~ E. randii that was package very nicely at a box store. I’m a new orchid enthusiast , so I knew I had to research this . Did you have to make that plant mix, or does it come packaged with all of those ingredients ? Your plant obviously is doing great in that mix.

      Hi! You can see an update here and in my latest bloom video with 3 spikes ruclips.net/video/4itgO_UEXmg/видео.html , I dont buy any prepackaged mixes, they can do well in anything that works with how you water to provide the correct moisture levels and airation 🙃
      Have a great holiday period!

    I have leca and that top dry layer kills my roots I need to try something else I don't know if lava rock would work are the rocks you use very porous or are they smooth?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      Lava rock doesn't hold much moisture really and it won't trap moisture very well because it's porous? It's difficult to get over here so not sure, bit I tried pumice, which is more moisture retentive. that works in some cases, but not others, and still sucks moisture from very delicate roots as it is porous. The grit works much better. It's called alpine horticultural grit. This one is made by the *RHS gardeners association* but you could find it anywhere I think under various brand names. It's just tiny non wicking pebbles. The essential part is non wicking. You dont want anything porous that's going to suck moisture. And you want it to be small enough to form a layer on your media of choice to trap moisture. You also want them to be smooth pebbles so they are root tip friendly. Hope that helps.

      same happened to my poor encyclia. i can't seem to keep it alive, but now i'm thinking i made a mistake in keeping it in a leca ball semi-hydroponic system.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад

      Hi, as I mention in this video my encyclia cordigera liked semi hydro once its roots were down in the media, but hated the dry top layer which caused new roots to dessicate. They like lots of moisture. What issues are you having? Are the roots dessicating when hitting the top layer? Another issue being they're warm growers and clay media will keep the root zone cooler so its particularly important to keep them warm if you place them in semi hydro. My current inorganic setup using pumice, synthic and a top layer of non wicking pebbles is working excellently as a replacement for the self watering with a moss bark mix😄 if the issue you're having is new root tips dessicating and you can't find a workaround, then you could try potting in a bark moss mix as an alternative.

      @@TheOrchidRoom -- thank you for replying! i had a few bulbs of the encyclia prismatocarpum, but they have slowly died off and i'm only left with two bulbs as of today. at first, i had them in semi-hydro with leca balls but i realized that the bulbs had shriveled up terribly. i've tried planting them a bit deeper but the bulbs never plumped back up. a couple of months ago, i repotted them into a mixture of mostly bark, and sphagnum moss, with some leca balls for wicking. the bulbs still never plumped up, and the leaves of some bulbs begin to turn yellow and died off. for the remaining two bulbs i'm trying to revive them if i can at whatever cost. i cleaned off the roots after taking out the dead bulbs, and i just placed them in the pot with a bit more sphagnum moss and a layer of white pebbles on top. the bulbs never plumped up after the very first time they shriveled up (which wasn't long after i purchased them). they tend to turn yellow, the roots are darker (and not of a healthy light green color). i think i may have also kept them a bit too cool, as well. i hope i can revive them! thank you for your expertise :)

      @@catchloe_ No problem, but sorry, I didn't realise you were talking about the encyclia prismatocarpa- I was talking about the cordigera in this case and while the cordigera is a hot grower, the prismatocarpa is intermediate to cool growing in high elevation mountain forests. So disregard the warmth comment, try keeping it more intermediate which is probably the sort of temps it's been at. If it has no live roots it won't hydrate no matter the media, so it's just a case of waiting for a new growth and new roots to come, and trying to keep it as stress free as possible until then- not too hot and not too much direct bright light. That's all you can do for now. It sounds like it's in an appropriate mix when those new roots do finally emerge, let it establish in that mix when that happens before any other repots. Fingers crossed for it! 🤞😄

    What exactly *is* horticultural grit? It's be interested in trying a top layer to keep it more moist in my self watering pots, but I'm really not sure what I would be looking for.

      @@TheOrchidRoom ah that makes sense. If the grit is small, are you not worried about it falling further down between the various if the medium and filling up the air spaces?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      @@OrchidNerd Nope not worried, if you can see on the top of the synthic mix for the encyclia cordigera there is no danger of that. If you check my catasetum video you can see again, with the seramis or LECA that doesn't happen.
