I've owned one since January of this year, truly amazing with its form factor and image quality. Although I agree about that fragility aspect of this camera, it's actually something I'm not too worried about because I have a background in working on electronics and other cameras and I encourage others to get into this practice. looking at teardown videos and diagrams of the rx1 series, they're honestly pretty easy to work on and "maintain" compared to something like a new Canon or Sony if something goes wrong. The parts aren't all too bad of prices either! Think of it as basic maintenence on a car, you wanna keep it healthy. Opening up an Rx1 and cleaning the lens and sensor should take about 10 minutes to do depending on experience and a whole tear down takes about 40-60 minutes. I'd like to give anyone out there the confidence to do so given they have the right tools and watch the right videos. I think really any old point and shoot that doesn't have weather sealing should be given this kind of treatment. Keeping old gems like these alive for the younger gens to enjoy! Cheers!
That's such an amazing reply to read - thank you for taking the time! I'm happy working on most things to be honest and have taken apart a few modern lenses and film cameras ect but I'm glad there are people out there working on the RX1R!
I had this camera 3x lit of problems with optic. Unfortunatelly I not so good in maintenance and electronics, so I could not repair myself and the repair costs in Czech Republic were brutal. Other than it´s super fraigle, it´s relly good camera.
Nice review. I bought my RX1 the first week it was launched about 12 years ago. It has been my primary camera the whole time... but I do have an RX10 as well, mainly for sports and wildlife photography. After all these years I finally have put an order in for a Leica Q3 43... not to replace, but to compliment the RX1. I think it will be better for taking portraits. The only negative with these fixed lenses is the sensor can still get dust on it, and it is pricey to clean. I've not sent mine it. When taking a picture of a white screen at F22 there are about 3 modest size spots and a 1/2 dozen tiny faded spots, so not too bad. None in the center of the screen. They all disappear by F16. Most of my past 12 years of photographic memories have come from my RX1. No regrets. And I do like using the viewfinder accessory.
I was fortunate enough to pick up an RX1R 3 months ago in beuatiful condition and it has blown me away. You are correct about it;s down falls but for me I can easily forgive it. The output of the camera/lens is so good that I could not imagine ever selling it. It's not my main camera but it is there for me when I need it. I simply love it!
Thanks for dropping by! The image quality from it is absolutely INCREDIBLE. I do hope we see this line of cameras revived some day! Today though, mine sadly leaves!
Your reviews are always special and it was a pleasure to watch, thank you. Images are great and the lense indeed has special rendering. Good luck with the Leica!
Love the RX1 series. Still miss my mkii version, but don’t miss one of the main reasons I sold it - the battery life. Assume you’re going with the Q2 or Q3? Either way you’ll be happy. I currently have the Q-P and am considering going to the Q2 primarily for the weather-sealing.
Hey thanks so much for taking the time to drop by! I do wish I had chance to try out the MKii, I reckon I would really like it but you're right, the main issue still isn't fixed though my understanding is that the autofocus is considerably better. I actually went for the original Q in the end, I watched a comparison of the Q/Q2/Q3 by "Mr Leica - Matt Osbourne" and the low light performance/colours are CONSIDERABLY nicer to my eye. I actually received it Wednesday and I shot a graduation event with it yesterday - VERY happy so far but I know what you mean, my main draw for the Q2 was purely the weather sealing!
I don't have one, but I want one and am looking to pick up the RX1R due to the mark II being so pricey. I went the RX100 route, which shares the same small, rectangular brick of soap design language and the same small battery. I do think that the claims of fragility are overstated. There's a thread of belief in YT videos that gear has to be metal and has to be able to be abused. Going to call BS on that one, as someone who has owned quite a few cameras from 1960s manual-only film rigs to modern Fuji and Sony. And who took all of it hiking and camping and to events/gigs. Treat your expensive gear with respect and it will generally last a long time.
Adding on -- In fact, my most unreliable was a Nikon that turned out to have widespread sensor failures. If the RX1 series was similarly defective, it would not sell for the lofty used price that it commands.
That style of aftermarket grip (I have one on my RX1R II) is essential for my 71 year-old hands but it does raise the question - why didn't Sony build it in and use it to hold a *decent battery* ? The grip I have has a lip which fits into the clamp of my tripod - ideal.
I suppose because they have their A7 line for those that want the bigger grip and more features. It's frustrating though, same reason the Fuji XE/XPro line exist and the Leica M/Q cameras! It's a fantastic little camera though! So you still enjoy it?
Thanks for dropping by! As it currently stands I'm selling the whole thing as a kit on evilbay but if I get no buyers within the next few days I'll pop you a message and separate the parts - thanks for the message!
Love seeing this kind of video about the RX1 series from Sony. Got the RX1 RII and using it mostly for taking personal pictures since it is not my main camera. Im not familiar with the previous versions but love the compact size of the body and picture quality. Might get the Fotodiox grip for the RII. Batterylife is bad but have multiple of them so it gets me trough the day depending how much i shoot. Mostly turning it off to save a bit of batterylife 🙃
Microcontrast is a magical thing… used a few Sony GMs and all of them have far superior optical resolution than this tiny Zeiss F2. But the microcontrast is missing on those lenses, making then too "clinical". Only a Hasselblad system has bettered this Zeiss, in my limited experience.

There is no RX1 R 3... what are you talking about????
I assume he simply meant he picked one up 3 months ago?
@@FeralGinger that makes sense
@@FeralGinger Yes Three months ago is what I meant.
That Leica cut away is hilarious!! I'm thinking about this body while I save for an M10. What Leica camera are you moving to after this?
Haha thank you! I've actually recently taken delivery of an original Leica Q and I'm over the moon with it!
@@FeralGinger I looked at the Q and the M together in the store and I’m deciding on the M10! I’ll be shooting film while I save up -_- Lolol
You got some real results out of that thing... can't wait to see what's next
Appreciate it my man! Absolutely loved my time with this one tbh!

Good luck with the Leica!
Extremely kind comments, thank you so much! 🙏
Haha thank you, it's a BIG leap and I am BEYOND excited!
I love the 3rd picture
Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏

Still better autofocus than Fuji X70

"one of the best lenses I have ever used"...Well, that doesn't say much when we don't know which other lenses you have used.
Fair

Sony rx1 vs leica q1 , q2
Not fuji !
If that's a video you would be interested in I'd be happy to do a video!
No stabilization 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
It's not the end of the world but yeah, this is another point to the Leica Q!
