Great review and analysis of the camera. I have the RX1R and RX1R mkii and love the quality of the images from the sensor / lens combo - nice contrast , sharpness and colours. You get a lot of quality in a small package and third party batteries are cheap and easilly available. The EVF for the Sony RX1R can be picked up for reasonable prices now. A classic and definitely a keeper.

Thanks! Yeah definitely one to keep if you can, I’ve seen the EVF go for under £200 a few times on eBay, I’ve also recently seen a couple of mkii go under £1500 so there definitely occasional bargains for anyone who wants them.
Unfortunately I may part with this one but I think the mark ii might tempt me in the future for sure with its improvements.

To answer the question: yes, and it's still my 'go to' camera in large part because - as you point out - the build quality is so outstanding that it's just a pleasure to hold and use. As for autofocus, I suspect some users will be old enough to have known nothing but manual focus in their earlier years of photography. So yes - autofocus is limited, but manual focus has focus confirmation and works particularly well due to the quality of that Zeiss focusing ring. And the image quality really is exceptional which - other limitations notwithstanding - is what most of us are here for. Thanks for the review.

Thanks Andrew, I enjoyed using the RX1 despite some of its short comings.

Many years ago i bought an rx1r in a new condition. After a while i sold all my gear. I had many many cameras, nikon dxs, sony a7's rx100's rx10's, fuji x100's , xt-20 etc lenses etc. My only gear for the last years is this rx1 (and samsung ultra series smartphones). Rx1 with the zeiss is just a masterpiece and kills at photography most of new tech combos. I still remember some tests many years ago with my last x100iv and the differences where as night and day.

The RX1R II PDAF still significantly outperforms the X100vi in practice.

Interesting! Hopefully I’ll get chance to try one out at some point.

      @@thegadgetdude It's funny that Sony's 2015 AF is better than a 2024 Fuji cam.

The battery problem should have been solved ab initio. If you take a conventional cylindrical battery and tape it to the LH front of the camera, then you have the core of the hand grip it so sadly lacks and enough electrons to run the thing all day...

Ive actually found that using multi spot auto works for me alot and if my subject isnt too obacure then it generally chooses what i want in focus.

RX1 the literature from the creators involved made a big song and dance about the anti-aliasing filter they used, it was ironic they removed said special filter to release the RX1R, and then put in a electronic-variable anti-aliasing filter in the mk-II...

Dear RUclips bros: Stop showing us "alternatives" the the Fujifilm X100 series without viewfinders. Clearly you' re missing the whole point...

As I mentioned in the video you can buy an EVF that attaches to this or get the mark ii with a viewfinder built in.
My favourite compact (the GM5) has a viewfinder though and video on that one soon!
Another nice option with a bigger viewfinder is the Olympus E-M5 which i originally mentioned but took out of the edit for this one. I had the mark ii and mark iii, mark iii has phase detect and the ii is an all metal build.
